Critical classes, Kronecker products of spin characters, and the Saxl conjecture

Highlighting the use of critical classes, we consider constituents in Kronecker products, in particular of spin characters of the double covers of the symmetric and alternating groups. We apply results from the spin case to find constituents in Kronecker products of characters of the symmetric groups. Via this tool, we make progress on the Saxl conjecture; this claims that for a triangular number $n$, the square of the irreducible character of the symmetric group $S_n$ labelled by the staircase contains all irreducible characters of $S_n$ as constituents. We find a large number of constituents in this square which were not detected by other methods. Moreover, the investigation of Kronecker products of spin characters inspires a spin variant of Saxl's conjecture.

This article proves that an irreducible subfactor planar algebra with a distributive biprojection lattice admits a minimal 2-box projection generating the identity biprojection. It is a generalization (conjectured in 2013) of a theorem of Oystein Ore on distributive intervals of finite groups (1938), and a corollary of a natural subfactor extension of a conjecture of Kenneth S. Brown in algebraic combinatorics (2000). We deduce a link between combinatorics and representations in finite group theory.
The spin-Brauer diagram algebra

We investigate the spin-Brauer diagram algebra, denoted ${\bf SB}_n(δ)$, that arises from studying an analogous form of Schur-Weyl duality for the action of the pin group on ${\bf V}^{\otimes n} \otimes Δ$. Here ${\bf V}$ is the standard $N$-dimensional complex representation of ${\bf Pin}(N)$ and $Δ$ is the spin representation. When $δ= N$ is a positive integer, we define a surjective map ${\bf SB}_n(N) \twoheadrightarrow {\rm End}_{{\bf Pin}(N)}({\bf V}^{\otimes n} \otimes Δ)$ and show it is an isomorphism for $N \geq 2n$. We show ${\bf SB}_n(δ)$ is a cellular algebra and use cellularity to characterize its irreducible representations.
Weight multiplicities and Young tableaux through affine crystals

The weight multiplicities of finite dimensional simple Lie algebras can be computed individually using various methods. Still, it is hard to derive explicit closed formulas. Similarly, explicit closed formulas for the multiplicities of maximal weights of affine Kac--Moody algebras are not known in most cases. In this paper, we study weight multiplicities for both finite and affine cases of classical types for certain infinite families of highest weights modules. We introduce new classes of Young tableaux, called the {\em $($spin$)$ rigid tableaux}, and prove that they are equinumerous to the weight multiplicities of the highest weight modules under our consideration. These new classes of Young tableaux arise from crystal basis elements for dominant maximal weights of the integrable highest weight modules over affine Kac--Moody algebras. By applying combinatorics of tableaux such as the Robinson--Schensted algorithm and new insertion schemes, and using integrals over orthogonal groups, we reveal hidden structures in the sets of weight multiplicities and obtain explicit closed formulas for the weight multiplicities. In particular we show that some special families of weight multiplicities form the Pascal, Catalan, Motzkin, Riordan and Bessel triangles.
Braid relations for involution words in affine Coxeter groups
We describe an algorithm to identify a minimal set of "braid relations" which span and preserve all sets of involution words for twisted Coxeter systems of finite or affine type. We classify the cases in which adding the smallest possible set of "half-braid" relations to the ordinary braid relations produces a spanning set: in the untwisted case, this occurs for the Coxeter systems which are finite with rank two or type $A_n$, or affine with rank three or type $\tilde A_n$. These results generalize recent work of Hu and Zhang on the finite classical cases.

The fundamental group of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement in a complex vector space is an important topological invariant. The third rank of successive quotients in the lower central series of the fundamental group was called Falk invariant of the arrangement since Falk gave the first formula and asked to give a combinatorial interpretation. In this article, we give a combinatorial formula for the Falk invariant of a signed graphic arrangement that do not have a $B_2$ as sub-arrangement.

In 2002, Terao showed that every reflection multi-arrangement of a real reflection group with constant multiplicity is free by providing a basis of the module of derivations. We first generalize Terao's result to multi-arrangements stemming from well-generated unitary reflection groups, where the multiplicity of a hyperplane depends on the order of its stabilizer. Here the exponents depend on the exponents of the dual reflection representation. We then extend our results further to all imprimitive irreducible unitary reflection groups. In this case the exponents turn out to depend on the exponents of a certain Galois twist of the dual reflection representation that comes from a Beynon-Lusztig type semi-palindromicity of the fake degrees.

We give an example of a long range Bernoulli percolation process on a group non-quasi-isometric with $\mathbb{Z}$, in which clusters are almost surely finite for all values of the parameter. This random graph admits diverse equivalent definitions, and we study their ramifications. We also study its expected size and point out certain phase transitions.
Most Rigid Representations and Cayley index

For any finite group $G$, a natural question to ask is the order of the smallest possible automorphism group for a Cayley graph on $G$. A particular Cayley graph whose automorphism group has this order is referred to as an MRR (Most Rigid Representation), and its Cayley index is a numerical indicator of this value. Study of GRRs showed that with the exception of two infinite families and seven individual groups, every group admits a Cayley graph whose MRR is a GRR, so that the Cayley index is 1. The full answer to the question of finding the smallest possible Cayley index for a Cayley graph on a fixed group was almost completed in previous work, but the precise answers for some finite groups and one infinite family of groups were left open. We fill in the remaining gaps to completely answer this question.

The power graph of a group $G$ is the graph whose vertex set is $G$ and two distinct vertices are adjacent if one is a power of the other. This paper investigates the minimal separating sets of power graphs of finite groups. For power graphs of finite cyclic groups, certain minimal separating sets are obtained. Consequently, a sharp upper bound for their connectivity is supplied. Further, the components of proper power graphs of $p$-groups are studied. In particular, the number of components of that of abelian $p$-groups are determined.
An explicit determination of the $K$-theoretic structure constants of the affine Grassmannian associated to $SL_2$
Let $G:=\widehat{SL_2}$ denote the affine Kac-Moody group associated to $SL_2$ and $\bar{\mathcal{X}}$ the associated affine Grassmannian. We determine an inductive formula for the Schubert basis structure constants in the torus-equivariant Grothendieck group of $\bar{\mathcal{X}}$. In the case of ordinary (non-equivariant) $K$-theory we find an explicit closed form for the structure constants. We also determine an inductive formula for the structure constants in the torus-equivariant cohomology ring, and use this formula to find closed forms for some of the structure constants.

A regular cover of a connected graph is called {\em cyclic} or {\em dihedral} if its transformation group is cyclic or dihedral respectively, and {\em arc-transitive} (or {\em symmetric}) if the fibre-preserving automorphism subgroup acts arc-transitively on the regular cover. In this paper, we give a classification of arc-transitive cyclic and dihedral covers of a connected pentavalent symmetric graph of order twice a prime. All those covers are explicitly constructed as Cayley graphs on some groups, and their full automorphism groups are determined.

Critical ideals generalize the critical group, Smith group and the characteristic polynomials of the adjacency and Laplacian matrices of a graph. We give a complete characterization of the digraphs with at most one trivial critical ideal. Which implies the characterizations of the digraphs whose critical group has one invariant factor equal to one, and the digraphs whose Smith group has one invariant factor equal to one.
A finite simple group is CCA if and only if it has no element of order four

A Cayley graph for a group $G$ is CCA if every automorphism of the graph that preserves the edge-orbits under the regular representation of $G$ is an element of the normaliser of $G$. A group $G$ is then said to be CCA if every connected Cayley graph on $G$ is CCA. We show that a finite simple group is CCA if and only if it has no element of order 4. We also show that "many" 2-groups are non-CCA.
Cayley graphs and symmetric interconnection networks
These lecture notes are on automorphism groups of Cayley graphs and their applications to optimal fault-tolerance of some interconnection networks. We first give an introduction to automorphisms of graphs and an introduction to Cayley graphs. We then discuss automorphism groups of Cayley graphs. We prove that the vertex-connectivity of edge-transitive graphs is maximum possible. We investigate the automorphism group and vertex-connectivity of some families of Cayley graphs that have been considered for interconnection networks; we focus on the hypercubes, folded hypercubes, Cayley graphs generated by transpositions, and Cayley graphs from linear codes. New questions and open problems are also discussed.

We consider a family of I-graphs I(n,k,l), which is a generalization of the class of generalized Petersen graphs. In the present paper, we provide a new method for counting Jacobian group of the I-graph I(n,k,l). We show that the minimum number of generators of Jac(I(n,k,l)) is at least two and at most 2k + 2l - 1. Also, we obtain a closed formula for the number of spanning trees of I(n,k,l) in terms of Chebyshev polynomials. We investigate some arithmetical properties of this number and its asymptotic behaviour.

Let $n=p_1^{n_1}p_2^{n_2}\ldots p_r^{n_r}$, where $r,n_1,\ldots, n_r$ are positive integers and $p_1,p_2,\ldots,p_r$ are distinct prime numbers with $p_1<p_2<\cdots <p_r$. For the cyclic group $C_n$ of order $n$, let $\mathcal{P}(C_n)$ be the power graph of $C_n$ and $κ(\mathcal{P}(C_n))$ be the vertex connectivity of $\mathcal{P}(C_n)$. It is known that $κ(\mathcal{P}(C_n))=p_1^{n_1} -1$ if $r=1$. For $r\geq 2$, we determine the exact value of $κ(\mathcal{P}(C_n))$ when $2φ(p_1\ldots p_{r-1})\geq p_1\ldots p_{r-1}$, and give an upper bound for $κ(\mathcal{P}(C_n))$ when $2φ(p_1\ldots p_{r-1}) < p_1\ldots p_{r-1}$, which is sharp for many values of $n$ but equality need not hold always.
Renormalization: a quasi-shuffle approach

In recent years, the usual BPHZ algorithm for renormalization in perturbative quantum field theory has been interpreted, after dimensional regularization, as a Birkhoff decomposition of characters on the Hopf algebra of Feynman graphs, with values in a Rota-Baxter algebra of amplitudes. We associate in this paper to any such algebra a universal semi-group (different in nature from the Connes-Marcolli "cosmical Galois group"). Its action on the physical amplitudes associated to Feynman graphs produces the expected operations: Bogoliubov's preparation map, extraction of divergences, renormalization. In this process a key role is played by commutative and noncommutative quasi-shuffle bialgebras whose universal properties are instrumental in encoding the renormalization process.

We consider a group-theoretic analogue of the classic subset sum problem. It is known that every virtually nilpotent group has polynomial time decidable subset sum problem. In this paper we use subgroup distortion to show that every polycyclic non-virtually-nilpotent group has NP-complete subset sum problem.
A note on Hindman-type theorems for uncountable cardinals

Recent results of Hindman, Leader and Strauss and of Fernández-Bretón and Rinot showed that natural versions of Hindman's Theorem fail {\em for all} uncontable cardinals. On the other hand, Komjáth proved a result in the positive direction, showing that {\em there are} arbitrarily large abelian groups satisfying {\em some} Hindman-type property. In this note we show how a family of natural Hindman-type theorems for uncountable cardinals can be obtained by adapting some recent results of the author from their original countable setting. We also show how lower bounds for {\em some} of the variants considered can be obtained.
