Difference sets disjoint from a subgroup
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study finite groups $G$ having a subgroup $H$ and $D \subset G \setminus H$ such that the multiset $\{ xy^{-1}:x,y \in D\}$ has every non-identity element occur the same number of times (such a $D$ is called a {\it difference set}). We show that $H$ has to be normal, that $|G|=|H|^2$, and that $|D \cap Hg|=|H|/2$ for all $g \notin H$. We show that $H$ is contained in every normal subgroup of prime index, and other properties. We give a $2$-parameter family of examples of such groups. We show that such groups have Schur rings with four principal sets.

Cayley graphs on groups with commutator subgroup of order 2p are hamiltonian
We show that if G is a finite group whose commutator subgroup [G,G] has order 2p, where p is an odd prime, then every connected Cayley graph on G has a hamiltonian cycle.
Schur positivity and log-concavity related to longest increasing subsequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
Chen proposed a conjecture on the log-concavity of the generating function for the symmetric group with respect to the length of longest increasing subsequences of permutations. Motivated by Chen's log-concavity conjecture, Bóna, Lackner and Sagan further studied similar problems by restricting the whole symmetric group to certain of its subsets. They obtained the log-concavity of the corresponding generating functions for these subsets by using the hook-length formula. In this paper, we generalize and prove their results by establishing the Schur positivity of certain symmetric functions. This also enables us to propose a new approach to Chen's original conjecture.

Symmetric powers of permutation representations of finite groups and primitive colorings on polyhedrons
In this paper, we define a set which has a finite group action and is generated by a finite color set, a set which has a finite group action, and a subset of the set of non negative integers. we state its properties to apply one of solution of the following two problems, respectively. First, we calculate the generating function of the character of symmetric powers of permutation representation associated with a set which has a finite group action. Second, we calculate the number of primitive colorings on some objects of polyhedrons. It is a generalization of the calculation of the number of primitive necklaces by N.Metropolis and G-C.Rota.

Uniform Diameter Bounds in Branch Groups
Let $G$ be either the Grigorchuk $2$-group or one of the Gupta-Sidki $p$-groups. We give new upper bounds for the diameters of the quotients of $G$ by its level stabilisers, as well as other natural sequences of finite-index normal subgroups. Our bounds are independent of the generating set, and are polylogarithmic functions of the group order, with explicit degree. Our proofs utilize a version of the profinite Solovay-Kitaev procedure, the branch structure of $G$, and in certain cases, results on the lower central series of $G$.

Configuration spaces of graphs with certain permitted collisions
Published • View PublicationBIB
If $G$ is a graph with vertex set $V$, let Conf$_n^{\text{sink}}(G,V)$ be the space of $n$-tuples of points on $G$, which are only allowed to overlap on elements of $V$. We think of Conf$_n^{\text{sink}}(G,V)$ as a configuration space of points on $G$, where points are allowed to collide on vertices. In this paper, we attempt to understand these spaces from two separate, but closely related, perspectives. Using techniques of combinatorial topology we compute the fundamental groups and homology groups of Conf$_n^{\text{sink}}(G,V)$ in the case where $G$ is a tree. Next, we use techniques of asymptotic algebra to prove statements about Conf$_n^{\text{sink}}(G,V)$, for general graphs $G$, whenever $n$ is sufficiently large. It is proven that, for general graphs, the homology groups exhibit generalized representation stability in the sense of previous work of the author.

Set Matching: An Enhancement of the Hales-Jewett Pairing Strategy
Published • View PublicationBIB
When solving k-in-a-Row games, the Hales-Jewett pairing strategy [4] is a well-known strategy to prove that specific positions are (at most) a draw. It requires two empty squares per possible winning line (group) to be marked, i.e., with a coverage ratio of 2.0. In this paper we present a new strategy, called Set Matching. A matching set consists of a set of nodes (the markers), a set of possible winning lines (the groups), and a coverage set indicating how all groups are covered after every first initial move. This strategy needs less than two markers per group. As such it is able to prove positions in k-in-a-Row games to be draws, which cannot be proven using the Hales-Jewett pairing strategy. We show several efficient configurations with their matching sets. These include Cycle Configurations, BiCycle Configurations, and PolyCycle Configurations involving more than two cycles. Depending on configuration, the coverage ratio can be reduced to 1.14. Many examples in the domain of solving k-in-a-Row games are given, including the direct proof (without further investigation) that the empty 4 x 4 board is a draw for 4-in-a-Row.

A monodromy graph approach to the piecewise polynomiality of simple, monotone and Grothendieck dessins d'enfants double Hurwitz numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
Hurwitz numbers count genus $g$, degree $d$ covers of the complex projective line with fixed branched locus and fixed ramification data. An equivalent description is given by factorisations in the symmetric group. Simple double Hurwitz numbers are a class of Hurwitz-type counts of specific interest. In recent years a related counting problem in the context of random matrix theory was introduced as so-called monotone Hurwitz numbers. These can be viewed as a desymmetrised version of the Hurwitz-problem. A combinatorial interpolation between simple and monotone double Hurwitz numbers was introduced as mixed double Hurwitz numbers and it was proved that these objects are piecewise polynomial in a certain sense. Moreover, the notion of strictly monotone Hurwitz numbers has risen interest as it is equivalent to a certain Grothendieck dessins d'enfant count. In this paper, we introduce a combinatorial interpolation between simple, monotone and strictly monotone double Hurwitz numbers as \textit{triply interpolated Hurwitz numbers}. Our aim is twofold: Using a connection between triply interpolated Hurwitz numbers and tropical covers in terms of so-called monodromy graphs, we give algorithms to compute the polynomials for triply interpolated Hurwitz numbers in all genera using Erhart theory. We further use this approach to study the wall-crossing behaviour of triply interpolated Hurwitz numbers in genus $0$ in terms of related Hurwitz-type counts. All those results specialise to the extremal cases of simple, monotone and Grothendieck dessins d'enfants Hurwitz numbers.

Lattice Walks in the Octant with Infinite Associated Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Continuing earlier investigations of restricted lattice walks in $\mathbb{N}^3$, we take a closer look at the models with infinite associated groups. We find that up to isomorphism, only 12 different infinite groups appear, and we establish a connection between the group of a model and the model being Hadamard.
Hadamard Equiangular Tight Frames
Published • View PublicationBIB
An equiangular tight frame (ETF) is a type of optimal packing of lines in Euclidean space. They are often represented as the columns of a short, fat matrix. In certain applications we want this matrix to be flat, that is, have the property that all of its entries have modulus one. In particular, real flat ETFs are equivalent to self-complementary binary codes that achieve the Grey-Rankin bound. Some flat ETFs are (complex) Hadamard ETFs, meaning they arise by extracting rows from a (complex) Hadamard matrix. These include harmonic ETFs, which are obtained by extracting the rows of a character table that correspond to a difference set in the underlying finite abelian group. In this paper, we give some new results about flat ETFs. One of these results gives an explicit Naimark complement for all Steiner ETFs, which in turn implies that all Kirkman ETFs are possibly-complex Hadamard ETFs. This in particular produces a new infinite family of real flat ETFs. Another result establishes an equivalence between real flat ETFs and certain types of quasi-symmetric designs, resulting in a new infinite family of such designs.

Smart elements in combinatorial group testing problems
Published • View PublicationBIB
In combinatorial group testing problems Questioner needs to find a special element $x \in [n]$ by testing subsets of $[n]$. Tapolcai et al. introduced a new model, where each element knows the answer for those queries that contain it and each element should be able to identify the special one. Using classical results of extremal set theory we prove that if $\mathcal{F}_n \subset 2^{[n]}$ solves the non-adaptive version of this problem and has minimal cardinality, then $$\lim_{n \rightarrow \infty} \frac{|\mathcal{F}_n|}{\log_2 n} = \log_{(3/2)}2.$$ This improves results by Tapolcai et al. We also consider related models inspired by secret sharing models, where the elements should share information among them to find out the special one. Finally the adaptive versions of the different models are investigated.
Orbital Graphs
We introduce orbital graphs and discuss some of their basic properties. Then we focus on their usefulness for search algorithms for permutation groups, including finding the intersection of groups and the stabilizer of sets in a group.

Euler totient of subfactor planar algebras
Published in Proc. Am. Math. Soc. (2018) • View PublicationBIB
We extend the Euler's totient function (from arithmetic) to any irreducible subfactor planar algebra, using the Mobius function of its biprojection lattice, as Hall did for the finite groups. We prove that if it is nonzero then there is a minimal 2-box projection generating the identity biprojection. We explain a relation with a problem of K.S. Brown. As an application, we define the dual Euler totient of a finite group and we show that if it is nonzero then the group admits a faithful irreducible complex representation. We also get an analogous result at depth 2, involving the central biprojection lattice.

Symmetric Complete Sum-free Sets in Cyclic Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present constructions of symmetric complete sum-free sets in general finite cyclic groups. It is shown that the relative sizes of the sets are dense in $[0,\frac{1}{3}]$, answering a question of Cameron, and that the number of those contained in the cyclic group of order $n$ is exponential in $n$. For primes $p$, we provide a full characterization of the symmetric complete sum-free subsets of $\mathbb{Z}_p$ of size at least $(\frac{1}{3}-c) \cdot p$, where $c>0$ is a universal constant.

AG codes and AG quantum codes from the GGS curve
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, algebraic-geometric (AG) codes associated with the GGS maximal curve are investigated. The Weierstrass semigroup at all $\mathbb F_{q^2}$-rational points of the curve is determined; the Feng-Rao designed minimum distance is computed for infinite families of such codes, as well as the automorphism group. As a result, some linear codes with better relative parameters with respect to one-point Hermitian codes are discovered. Classes of quantum and convolutional codes are provided relying on the constructed AG codes.

Digraphs with small automorphism groups that are Cayley on two nonisomorphic groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $Γ=\mathrm{Cay}(G,S)$ be a Cayley digraph on a group $G$ and let $A=\mathrm{Aut}(Γ)$. The Cayley index of $Γ$ is $|A:G|$. It has previously been shown that, if $p$ is a prime, $G$ is a cyclic $p$-group and $A$ contains a noncyclic regular subgroup, then the Cayley index of $Γ$ is superexponential in $p$. We present evidence suggesting that cyclic groups are exceptional in this respect. Specifically, we establish the contrasting result that, if $p$ is an odd prime and $G$ is abelian but not cyclic, and has order a power of $p$ at least $p^3$, then there is a Cayley digraph $Γ$ on $G$ whose Cayley index is just $p$, and whose automorphism group contains a nonabelian regular subgroup.

Weighted sheaves and homology of Artin groups
Published in Algebr. Geom. Topol. 18 (2018) 3943-4000 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we expand the theory of weighted sheaves over posets, and use it to study the local homology of Artin groups. First, we use such theory to relate the homology of classical braid groups with the homology of certain independence complexes of graphs. Then, in the context of discrete Morse theory on weighted sheaves, we introduce a particular class of acyclic matchings. Explicit formulas for the homology of the corresponding Morse complexes are given, in terms of the ranks of the associated incidence matrices. We use such method to perform explicit computations for the new affine case $\tilde C_n$, as well as for the cases $A_n$, $B_n$ and $\tilde{A}_n$ (which were already done before by different methods).

A trace formula for the distribution of rational $G$-orbits in ramified covers, adapted to representation stability
A standard observation in algebraic geometry and number theory is that a ramified cover of an algebraic variety $\widetilde{X}\rightarrow X$ over a finite field $F_q$ furnishes the rational points $x\in X(F_q)$ with additional arithmetic structure: the Frobenius action on the fiber over $x$. For example, in the case of the Vieta cover of polynomials over $F_q$ this structure describes a polynomial's irreducible decomposition type. Furthermore, the distribution of these Frobenius actions is encoded in the cohomology of $\widetilde{X}$ via the Grothendieck-Lefschetz trace formula. This note presents a version of the trace formula that is suited for studying the distribution in the context of representation stability: for certain sequences of varieties $(\widetilde{X}_n)$ the cohomology, and therefore the distribution of the Frobenius actions, stabilizes in a precise sense. We conclude by fully working out the example of the Vieta cover of the variety of polynomials. The calculation includes the distribution of cycle decompositions on cosets of Young subgroups of the symmetric group, which might be of independent interest.

The Constructions of directed strongly regular graph by algebraic method
The concept of directed strongly regular graphs (DSRG) was introduced by Duval in "A Directed Graph Version of Strongly Regular Graphs" [Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 47(1988)71-100]. Duval also provided several construction methods for directed strongly regular graphs. In this paper, We construct several new classes of directed strongly regular graphs which are obtained by using Kronecker matrix product, Semidirect product and Cayley coset graph. At the same time, using group representation, for two special cases, we give some other sufficient and necessary conditions of Cayley graphs to be DSRG. At last, we finish this paper with a discussion of some propositions of in(out)-neighbours and automorphism group in directed strongly regular graphs.

Zero-sum multisets mod p with an application to surface automorphisms
We solve a problem in enumerative combinatorics which is equivalent to counting topological types of certain group actions on compact Riemann surfaces. Let $V_2(F_p)$ be the two-dimensional vector space over $F_p$, the field with $p$ elements, $p$ an odd prime. We count orbits of the general linear group $GL_2(F_p)$ on certain multisets consisting of $R \geq 3$ non-zero columns from $V_2(F_p)$. The $R$-multisets are `zero-sum,' that is, the sum (mod $p$) over the columns in the multiset is $[\begin{smallmatrix} 0 \\ 0 \end{smallmatrix}]$. The orbit count yields the number of topological types of fully ramified actions of the elementary abelian $p$-group of rank $2$ on compact Riemann surfaces of genus $1+ Rp(p-1)/2-p^2.$
