Virtually fibering random right-angled Coxeter groups

We show that the Right-Angled Coxeter group $C=C(G)$ associated to a random graph $G\sim \mathcal{G}(n,p)$ with $\frac{\log n + \log\log n + ω(1)}{n} \leq p < 1- ω(n^{-2})$ virtually algebraically fibers. This means that $C$ has a finite index subgroup $C'$ and a finitely generated normal subgroup $N\subset C'$ such that $C'/N \cong \mathbb{Z}$. We also obtain the corresponding hitting time statements, more precisely, we show that as soon as $G$ has minimum degree at least 2 and as long as it is not the complete graph, then $C(G)$ virtually algebraically fibers. The result builds upon the work of Jankiewicz, Norin, and Wise and it is essentially best possible.

We study vertex-quasiprimitive $2$-arc-transitive digraphs, reducing the problem of vertex-primitive $2$-arc-transitive digraphs to almost simple groups. This includes a complete classification of vertex-quasiprimitive $2$-arc-transitive digraphs where the action on vertices has O'Nan-Scott type SD or CD.

Given a finite abelian $p$-group $F$, we prove an efficient recursive formula for $σ_a(F)=\sum_{\substack{H\leq F}}|H|^a$ where $H$ ranges over the subgroups of $F$. We infer from this formula that the $p$-component of the corresponding zeta-function on groups of $p$-rank bounded by some constant $r$ is rational with a simple denominator. We also provide two explicit examples in rank $r=3$ and $r=4$ as well as a closed formula for $σ_a(F)$.

An automorphism of a graph describes its structural symmetry and the concept of fixing number of a graph is used for breaking its symmetries (except the trivial one). In this paper, we evaluate automorphisms of the co-normal product graph $G_1\ast G_2$ of two simple graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$ and give sharp bounds on the order of its automorphism group. We study the fixing number of $G_1\ast G_2$ and prove sharp bounds on it. Moreover, we compute the fixing number of the co-normal product of some families of graphs.

In this note we prove the non-existence of two types of partial difference sets in Abelian groups of order 216. This finalizes the classification of parameters for which a partial difference set of size at most 100 exists in an Abelian group.
A Polynomial Method Approach to Zero-Sum Subsets in $\mathbb{F}_{p}^{2}$

In this paper we prove that every subset of $\mathbb{F}_p^2$ meeting all $p+1$ lines passing through the origin has a zero-sum subset. This is motivated by a result of Gao, Ruzsa and Thangadurai which states that $OL(\mathbb{F}_{p}^{2})=p+OL(\mathbb{F}_{p})-1$, for sufficiently large primes $p$. Here $OL(G)$ denotes the so-called Olson constant of the additive group $G$ and represents the smallest integer such that no subset of cardinality $OL(G)$ is zero-sum-free. Our proof is in the spirit of the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz.
Generating functions for permutations which avoid consecutive patterns with multiple descents
Let $S_n$ denote the group all permutations of $n$. For every permutation $σ$, we let $\mathrm{des}(σ)$ denote the number of descents in $σ$ and $\mathrm{LRMin}(σ)$ denote the number of left-to-right minima of $σ$. Given a sequence $τ= τ_1 \cdots τ_n$ of distinct positive integers, we define the reduction of $τ$, $\mathrm{red}(τ)$, to be the permutation of $S_n$ that results by replacing the $i$-th smallest element of $τ$ by $i$.
If $Γ$ is a set of permutations, we say that a permutation $σ= σ_1 \ldots σ_n \in S_n$ has a $Γ$-match starting at position $i$ if there is a $i < j$ such that $\mathrm{red}(σ_i σ_{i+1} \ldots σ_j) \in Γ$. We let $Γ$-$\mathrm{mch}(σ)$ denote the number of $Γ$-matches in $σ$. We let $\mathcal{NM}_n(Γ)$ be the set of $σ\in S_n$ such that $Γ$-$\mathrm{mch}(σ) = 0$.
In this paper, we modify Jones and Remmel's reciprocity method to study the generating function of the form \begin{equation} \mbox{NM}_Γ(t,x,y)=\sum_{n \geq 0} \frac{t^n}{n!} \mbox{NM}_{Γ,n}(x,y) \end{equation} where $\displaystyle \mbox{NM}_{Γ,n}(x,y) =\sum_{σ\in \mathcal{NM}_n(Γ)}x^{\mathrm{LRmin}(σ)}y^{1+\mathrm{des}(σ)}$ in the case where we no longer insist that all the permutations $τ\in Γ$ have at most one descent.
Tverberg type theorems for matroids
In this paper we show a variant of colorful Tverberg's theorem which is valid in any matroid: Let $S$ be a sequence of non-loops in a matroid $M$ of finite rank $m$ with closure operator cl. Suppose that $S$ is colored in such a way that the first color does not appear more than $r$-times and each other color appears at most $(r-1)$-times. Then $S$ can be partitioned into $r$ rainbow subsequences $S_1,\ldots, S_r$ such that $cl\,\emptyset\subsetneq cl\,S_1\subseteq cl\, S_2\subseteq \ldots \subseteq cl\,S_r$. In particular, $\emptyset\neq \bigcap_{i=1}^r cl\,S_i$. A subsequence is called rainbow if it contains each color at most once.
The conclusion of our theorem is weaker than the conclusion of the original Tverberg's theorem in $\mathbb R^d$, which states that $\bigcap conv\,S_i\neq \emptyset$, whereas we only claim that $\bigcap aff\,S_i\neq \emptyset$. On the other hand, our theorem strengthens the Tverberg's theorem in several other ways: 1) it is applicable to any matroid (whereas Tverberg's theorem can only be used in $\mathbb R^d$), 2) instead of $\bigcap cl\,S_i\neq \emptyset$ we have the stronger condition $cl\,\emptyset\subsetneq cl\,S_1\subseteq cl\,S_2\subseteq \ldots \subseteq cl\,S_r$, and 3) we add a color constraints that are even stronger than the color constraints in the colorful version of Tverberg's theorem.
Recently, the author together with Goaoc, Mabillard, Patáková, Tancer and Wagner used the first property and applied the non-colorful version of this theorem to homology groups with $GF(p)$ coefficients to obtain several non-embeddability results, for details we refer to arXiv:1610.09063.

A regular $t$-balanced Cayley map on a group $Γ$ is an embedding of a Cayley graph on $Γ$ into a surface with certain special symmetric properties. We completely classify regular $t$-balanced Cayley maps for a class of split metacyclic $2$-groups.

We will say that an Abelian group $Γ$ of order $n$ has the $m$-\emph{zero-sum-partition property} ($m$-\textit{ZSP-property}) if $m$ divides $n$, $m\geq 2$ and there is a partition of $Γ$ into pairwise disjoint subsets $A_1, A_2,\ldots , A_t$, such that $|A_i| = m$ and $\sum_{a\in A_i}a = g_0$ for $1 \leq i \leq t$, where $g_0$ is the identity element of $Γ$.
In this paper we study the $m$-ZSP property of $Γ$. We show that $Γ$ has $m$-ZSP if and only if $|Γ|$ is odd or $m\geq 3$ and $Γ$ has more than one involution. We will apply the results to the study of group distance magic graphs as well as to generalized Kotzig arrays.
Simple groups, product actions, and generalised quadrangles

The classification of flag-transitive generalised quadrangles is a long-standing open problem at the interface of finite geometry and permutation group theory. Given that all known flag-transitive generalised quadrangles are also point-primitive (up to point-line duality), it is likewise natural to seek a classification of the point-primitive examples. Working towards this aim, we are led to investigate generalised quadrangles that admit a collineation group $G$ preserving a Cartesian product decomposition of the set of points. It is shown that, under a generic assumption on $G$, the number of factors of such a Cartesian product can be at most four. This result is then used to treat various types of primitive and quasiprimitive point actions. In particular, it is shown that $G$ cannot have holomorph compound O'Nan-Scott type. Our arguments also pose purely group-theoretic questions about conjugacy classes in non-Abelian finite simple groups, and about fixities of primitive permutation groups.
Characterising CCA Sylow cyclic groups whose order is not divisible by four

A Cayley graph on a group $G$ has a natural edge-colouring. We say that such a graph is CCA if every automorphism of the graph that preserves this edge-colouring is an element of the normaliser of the regular representation of $G$. A group $G$ is then said to be CCA if every Cayley graph on $G$ is CCA.
Our main result is a characterisation of non-CCA graphs on groups that are Sylow cyclic and whose order is not divisible by four. We also provide several new constructions of non-CCA graphs.
Signatures of monic polynomials
To a univariate monic polynomial is attached a special planar forest that is called the picture of the polynomial. Isotopy classes of pictures are called signatures. All combinatorially possible signatures are realized and spaces of polynomials realizing a given signature are contractible. A finite cell complex for the cohomology of the braid groups is obtained.

It is well known that strongly minimal groups are commutative. Whether this is true for various generalisations of strong minimality has been asked in several different settings (see Hyttinen [2002], Maesono [2007], Pillay and Tanović [2011]). In this note we show that the answer is positive for groups with locally modular homogeneous pregeometries.

A graph is said to be symmetric if its automorphism group is transitive on its arcs. Guo et al. (Electronic J. Combin. 18, \#P233, 2011) and Pan et al. (Electronic J. Combin. 20, \#P36, 2013) determined all pentavalent symmetric graphs of order $4pq$. In this paper, we shall generalize this result by determining all connected pentavalent symmetric graphs of order four times an odd square-free integer. It is shown in this paper that, for each of such graphs $\itΓ$, either the full automorphism group ${\sf Aut}\itΓ$ is isomorphic to ${\sf PSL}(2,p)$, ${\sf PGL}(2,p)$, ${\sf PSL}(2,p){\times}\mathbb{Z}_2$ or ${\sf PGL}(2,p){\times}\mathbb{Z}_2$, or $\itΓ$ is isomorphic to one of 8 graphs.

A Cayley graph $\Ga=\Cay(G,S)$ is said to be normal if $G$ is normal in $\Aut\Ga$. The concept of normal Cayley graphs was first proposed by M.Y.Xu in [Discrete Math. 182, 309-319, 1998] and it plays an important role in determining the full automorphism groups of Cayley graphs. In this paper, we investigate the normality problem of the connected arc-transitive pentavalent Cayley graphs with soluble vertex stabilizer on finite nonabelian simple groups. We prove that all such graphs $\Ga$ are either normal or $G=\A_{39}$ or $\A_{79}$. Further, a connected arc-transitive pentavalent Cayley graph on $\A_{79}$ is constructed. To our knowledge, this is the first known example of pentavalent 3-arc-transitive Cayley graph on finite nonabelian simple group which is non-normal.
The independence number of the Birkhoff polytope graph, and applications to maximally recoverable codes

Maximally recoverable codes are codes designed for distributed storage which combine quick recovery from single node failure and optimal recovery from catastrophic failure. Gopalan et al [SODA 2017] studied the alphabet size needed for such codes in grid topologies and gave a combinatorial characterization for it.
Consider a labeling of the edges of the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$ with labels coming from $F_2^d$ , that satisfies the following condition: for any simple cycle, the sum of the labels over its edges is nonzero. The minimal d where this is possible controls the alphabet size needed for maximally recoverable codes in n x n grid topologies.
Prior to the current work, it was known that d is between $(\log n)^2$ and $n\log n$. We improve both bounds and show that d is linear in n. The upper bound is a recursive construction which beats the random construction. The lower bound follows by first relating the problem to the independence number of the Birkhoff polytope graph, and then providing tight bounds for it using the representation theory of the symmetric group.
Random walks on Ramanujan complexes and digraphs

The cutoff phenomenon was recently confirmed for random walks on Ramanujan graphs by the first author and Peres. In this work, we obtain analogs in higher dimensions, for random walk operators on any Ramanujan complex associated with a simple group $G$ over a local field $F$. We show that if $T$ is any $k$-regular $G$-equivariant operator on the Bruhat-Tits building with a simple combinatorial property (collision-free), the associated random walk on the $n$-vertex Ramanujan complex has cutoff at time $\log_k n$. The high dimensional case, unlike that of graphs, requires tools from non-commutative harmonic analysis and the infinite-dimensional representation theory of $G$. Via these, we show that operators $T$ as above on Ramanujan complexes give rise to Ramanujan digraphs with a special property ($r$-normal), implying cutoff. Applications include geodesic flow operators, geometric implications, and a confirmation of the Riemann Hypothesis for the associated zeta functions over every group $G$, previously known for groups of type $\widetilde A_n$ and $\widetilde C_2$.
The covering radius of $\mathrm{PGL}_2(q)$
The covering radius of a subset $C$ of the symmetric group $\mathrm{S}_n$ is the maximal Hamming distance of an element of $\mathrm{S}_n$ from $C$. This note determines the covering radii of the finite projective general linear groups. It turns out that the covering radius of $\mathrm{PGL}_2(q)$ is $q-2$ if $q$ is even, and is $q-3$ if $q$ is odd.

The Graovac-Pisanski index, which is also called the modified Wiener index, was introduced in 1991 by A. Graovac and T. Pisanski. This variation of the classical Wiener index takes into account the symmetries of a graph. In 2016 M. Ghorbani and S. Klavžar calculated this index by using the cut method, which we generalize in this paper. Moreover, we prove that in some cases the automorphism group of a zig-zag tubulene is isomorphic to the direct product of a dihedral group and a cyclic group. Finally, the closed formulas for the Graovac-Pisanski index of zig-zag tubulenes are calculated.
