A classification of finite antiflag-transitive generalized quadrangles
Published • View PublicationBIB
A generalized quadrangle is a point-line incidence geometry $\mathcal{Q}$ such that: (i) any two points lie on at most one line, and (ii) given a line $\ell$ and a point $P$ not incident with $\ell$, there is a unique point of $\ell$ collinear with $P$. The finite Moufang generalized quadrangles were classified by Fong and Seitz (1973), and we study a larger class of generalized quadrangles: the \emph{antiflag-transitive} quadrangles. An antiflag of a generalized quadrangle is a non-incident point-line pair $(P, \ell)$, and we say that the generalized quadrangle $\mathcal{Q}$ is antiflag-transitive if the group of collineations is transitive on the set of all antiflags. We prove that if a finite thick generalized quadrangle $\mathcal{Q}$ is antiflag-transitive, then $\mathcal{Q}$ is either a classical generalized quadrangle or is the unique generalized quadrangle of order $(3,5)$ or its dual.

Relations between counting functions on free groups and free monoids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider finite sums of counting functions on the free group $F_n$ and the free monoid $M_n$ for $n \geq 2$. Two such sums are considered equivalent if they differ by a bounded function. We find the complete set of linear relations between equivalence classes of sums of counting functions and apply this result to construct an explicit basis for the vector space of such equivalence classes. Moreover, we provide a graphical algorithm to determine whether two given sums of counting functions are equivalent. In particular, this yields an algorithm to decide whether two sums of Brooks quasimorphisms on $F_n$ represent the same class in bounded cohomology.

Algebraic flow theory of infinite graphs
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 62, May 2017, Pages 58-69 • View PublicationBIB
A problem by Diestel is to extend algebraic flow theory of finite graphs to infinite graphs with ends. In order to pursue this problem, we define an A-flow and non-elusive H-flow for arbitrary graphs and for abelian topological Hausdorff groups H and compact subsets A of H. We use these new definitions to extend several well-known theorems of flows in finite graphs to infinite graphs.
Incidence Geometry in a Weyl Chamber I: $GL_n$
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the central hyperplane arrangement whose hyperplanes are the vanishing loci of the weights of the first and the second fundamental representations of $\mathfrak{gl}_n$ restricted to the dual fundamental Weyl chamber. We obtain generating functions that count flats and faces of a given dimension. This counting is interpreted in physics as the enumeration of the phases of the Coulomb and mixed Coulomb-Higgs branches of a five dimensional gauge theory with 8 supercharges in presence of hypermultiplets transforming in the fundamental and antisymmetric representation of a U(n) gauge group as described by the Intriligator-Morrison-Seiberg superpotential.

Quantum cluster algebras and quantum nilpotent algebras
Published in Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. USA 111, no. 27 (2014) 9696-9703 • View PublicationBIB
A major direction in the theory of cluster algebras is to construct (quantum) cluster algebra structures on the (quantized) coordinate rings of various families of varieties arising in Lie theory. We prove that all algebras in a very large axiomatically defined class of noncommutative algebras possess canonical quantum cluster algebra structures. Furthermore, they coincide with the corresponding upper quantum cluster algebras. We also establish analogs of these results for a large class of Poisson nilpotent algebras. Many important families of coordinate rings are subsumed in the class we are covering, which leads to a broad range of application of the general results to the above mentioned types of problems. As a consequence, we prove the Berenstein--Zelevinsky conjecture for the quantized coordinate rings of double Bruhat cells and construct quantum cluster algebra structures on all quantum unipotent groups, extending the theorem of Geiß, Leclerc and Schröer for the case of symmetric Kac--Moody groups. Moreover, we prove that the upper cluster algebras of Berenstein, Fomin and Zelevinsky associated to double Bruhat cells coincide with the corresponding cluster algebras.

Additive bases in groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study the problem of removing an element from an additive basis in a general abelian group. We introduce analogues of the classical functions $X$, $S$ and $E$ (defined in the case of the integers) and obtain bounds on them. Our estimates on the functions $S_G$ and $E_G$ are valid for general abelian groups $G$ while in the case of $X_G$ we show that distinct types of behaviours may occur depending on the group $G$.

Relationship between Conditional Diagnosability and 2-extra Connectivity of Symmetric Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The conditional diagnosability and the 2-extra connectivity are two important parameters to measure ability of diagnosing faulty processors and fault-tolerance in a multiprocessor system. The conditional diagnosability $t_c(G)$ of $G$ is the maximum number $t$ for which $G$ is conditionally $t$-diagnosable under the comparison model, while the 2-extra connectivity $κ_2(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum number $k$ for which there is a vertex-cut $F$ with $|F|=k$ such that every component of $G-F$ has at least $3$ vertices. A quite natural problem is what is the relationship between the maximum and the minimum problem? This paper partially answer this problem by proving $t_c(G)=κ_2(G)$ for a regular graph $G$ with some acceptable conditions. As applications, the conditional diagnosability and the 2-extra connectivity are determined for some well-known classes of vertex-transitive graphs, including, star graphs, $(n,k)$-star graphs, alternating group networks, $(n,k)$-arrangement graphs, alternating group graphs, Cayley graphs obtained from transposition generating trees, bubble-sort graphs, $k$-ary $n$-cube networks and dual-cubes. Furthermore, many known results about these networks are obtained directly.

Point-primitive, line-transitive generalised quadrangles of holomorph type
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a group of collineations of a finite thick generalised quadrangle $Γ$. Suppose that $G$ acts primitively on the point set $\mathcal{P}$ of $Γ$, and transitively on the lines of $Γ$. We show that the primitive action of $G$ on $\mathcal{P}$ cannot be of holomorph simple or holomorph compound type. In joint work with Glasby, we have previously classified the examples $Γ$ for which the action of $G$ on $\mathcal{P}$ is of affine type. The problem of classifying generalised quadrangles with a point-primitive, line-transitive collineation group is therefore reduced to the case where there is a unique minimal normal subgroup $M$ and $M$ is non-Abelian.
Non-commutative lattice problems

We consider several subgroup-related algorithmic questions in groups, modeled after the classic computational lattice problems, and study their computational complexity. We find polynomial time solutions to problems like finding a subgroup element closest to a given group element, or finding a shortest non-trivial element of a subgroup in the case of nilpotent groups, and a large class of surface groups and Coxeter groups. We also provide polynomial time algorithm to compute geodesics in given generators of a subgroup of a free group.

Algebraic structures on cohomology of configuration spaces of manifolds with flows
Let PConf^n M be the configuration space of ordered n-tuples of distinct points on a smooth manifold M admitting a nowhere-vanishing vector field. We show that the ith cohomology group with coefficients in a field H^i(PConf^n M, k) is an N-module, where N is the category of noncommutative finite sets introduced by Pirashvili and Richter. Studying the representation theory of N, we obtain new polynomiality results for the cohomology groups H^i(PConf^n M, k). In the case of unordered configuration space Conf^n M = (PConf^n M)/S_n and rational coefficients, we show that cohomology dimension in fixed degree is nondecreasing.

A novel characterization of cubic Hamiltonian graphs via the associated quartic graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a cubic graph to be Hamiltonian by analyzing Eulerian tours in certain spanning subgraphs of the quartic graph associated with the cubic graph by 1-factor contraction. This correspondence is most useful in the case when it induces a blue and red 2-factorization of the associated quartic graph. We use this condition to characterize the Hamiltonian I-graphs, a further generalization of generalized Petersen graphs. The characterization of Hamiltonian I-graphs follows from the fact that one can choose a 1-factor in any I-graph in such a way that the corresponding associated quartic graph is a graph bundle having a cycle graph as base graph and a fiber and the fundamental factorization of graph bundles playing the role of blue and red factorization. The techniques that we develop allow us to represent Cayley multigraphs of degree 4, that are associated to abelian groups, as graph bundles. Moreover, we can find a family of connected cubic (multi)graphs that contains the family of connected I-graphs as a subfamily.

Invariable generation of the symmetric group
Published in Duke Math. J. 166, no. 8 (2017), 1573-1590 • View PublicationBIB
We say that permutations $π_1,\dots, π_r \in \mathcal{S}_n$ invariably generate $\mathcal{S}_n$ if, no matter how one chooses conjugates $π'_1,\dots,π'_r$ of these permutations, $π'_1,\dots,π'_r$ generate $\mathcal{S}_n$. We show that if $π_1,π_2,π_3$ are chosen randomly from $\mathcal{S}_n$ then, with probability tending to 1 as $n \rightarrow \infty$, they do not invariably generate $\mathcal{S}_n$. By contrast it was shown recently by Pemantle, Peres and Rivin that four random elements do invariably generate $\mathcal{S}_n$ with positive probability. We include a proof of this statement which, while sharing many features with their argument, is short and completely combinatorial.

Involution words: counting problems and connections to Schubert calculus for symmetric orbit closures
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 160 (2018), 217-260 • View PublicationBIB
Involution words are variations of reduced words for involutions in Coxeter groups, first studied under the name of "admissible sequences" by Richardson and Springer. They are maximal chains in Richardson and Springer's weak order on involutions. This article is the first in a series of papers on involution words, and focuses on their enumerative properties. We define involution analogues of several objects associated to permutations, including Rothe diagrams, the essential set, Schubert polynomials, and Stanley symmetric functions. These definitions have geometric interpretations for certain intervals in the weak order on involutions. In particular, our definition of "involution Schubert polynomials" can be viewed as a Billey-Jockusch-Stanley type formula for cohomology class representatives of $\mathrm{O}_n$- and $\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}$-orbit closures in the flag variety, defined inductively in recent work of Wyser and Yong. As a special case of a more general theorem, we show that the involution Stanley symmetric function for the longest element of a finite symmetric group is a product of staircase-shaped Schur functions. This implies that the number of involution words for the longest element of a finite symmetric group is equal to the dimension of a certain irreducible representation of a Weyl group of type $B$.

Calculating Greene's function via root polytopes and subdivision algebras
Published in Pacific J. Math. 286 (2017) 385-400 • View PublicationBIB
Greene's rational function $Ψ_P({\bf x})$ is a sum of certain rational functions in ${\bf x}=(x_1, \ldots, x_n)$ over the linear extensions of the poset $P$ (which has $n$ elements), which he introduced in his study of the Murnaghan-Nakayama formula for the characters of the symmetric group. In recent work Boussicault, Féray, Lascoux and Reiner showed that $Ψ_P({\bf x})$ equals a valuation on a cone and calculated $Ψ_P({\bf x})$ for several posets this way. In this paper we give an expression for $Ψ_P({\bf x})$ for any poset $P$. We obtain such a formula using dissections of root polytopes. Moreover, we use the subdivision algebra of root polytopes to show that in certain instances $Ψ_P({\bf x})$ can be expressed as a product formula, thus giving a compact alternative proof of Greene's original result and its generalizations.

Anti-concentration of inhomogeneous random walks
We provide a characterization for anti-concentration of inhomogeneous random walks in non-abelian groups. In application we extend the classical bounds by Erdos-Littlewood-Offord and Sarkozy-Szemeredi to non-abelian settings.

Lumpings of Algebraic Markov Chains arise from Subquotients
Published • View PublicationBIB
A function on the state space of a Markov chain is a "lumping" if observing only the function values gives a Markov chain. We give very general conditions for lumpings of a large class of algebraically-defined Markov chains, which include random walks on groups and other common constructions. We specialise these criteria to the case of descent operator chains from combinatorial Hopf algebras, and, as an example, construct a "top-to-random-with-standardisation" chain on permutations that lumps to a popular restriction-then-induction chain on partitions, using the fact that the algebra of symmetric functions is a subquotient of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer algebra.

Asymptotic triangulations and Coxeter transformations of the annulus
Published • View PublicationBIB
Asymptotic triangulations can be viewed as limits of triangulations under the action of the mapping class group. In the case of the annulus, such triangulations have been introduced by Baur and Dupont. We construct an alternative method of obtaining these asymptotic triangulations using Coxeter transformations. This provides us with an algebraic and combinatorial framework for studying these limits via the associated quivers.

Local geometry of the k-curve graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $S$ be an orientable surface with negative Euler characteristic. For $k \in \mathbb{N}$, let $\mathcal{C}_{k}(S)$ denote the $\textit{k-curve graph}$, whose vertices are isotopy classes of essential simple closed curves on $S$, and whose edges correspond to pairs of curves that can be realized to intersect at most $k$ times. The theme of this paper is that the geometry of Teichmüller space and of the mapping class group captures local combinatorial properties of $\mathcal{C}_{k}(S)$. Using techniques for measuring distance in Teichmüller space, we obtain upper bounds on the following three quantities for large $k$: the clique number of $\mathcal{C}_{k}(S)$ (exponential in $k$, which improves on all previously known bounds and which is essentially sharp); the maximum size of the intersection, whenever it is finite, of a pair of links in $\mathcal{C}_{k}$ (quasi-polynomial in $k$); and the diameter in $\mathcal{C}_{0}(S)$ of a large clique in $\mathcal{C}_{k}(S)$ (uniformly bounded). As an application, we obtain quasi-polynomial upper bounds, depending only on the topology of $S$, on the number of short simple closed geodesics on any square-tiled surface homeomorphic to $S$.

Derangements in finite classical groups for actions related to extension field and imprimitive subgroups and the solution of the Boston-Shalev conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
This is the fourth paper in a series. We prove a conjecture made independently by Boston et al and Shalev. The conjecture asserts that there is an absolute positive constant delta such that if G is a finite simple group acting transitively on a set of size n > 1, then the proportion of derangements in G is greater than delta. We show that with possibly finitely many exceptions, one can take delta = .016. Indeed, we prove much stronger results showing that for many actions, the proportion of derangements goes to 1 as n increases and prove similar results for families of permutation representations.

Algorithmic aspects of rotor-routing and the notion of linear equivalence
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics 236: pp. 428-437. (2018) • Search Publication
We define the analogue of linear equivalence of graph divisors for the rotor-router model, and use it to prove polynomial time computability of some problems related to rotor-routing. Using the connection between linear equivalence for chip-firing and for rotor-routing, we give a simple proof for the fact that the number of rotor-router unicycle-orbits equals the order of the Picard group. We also show that the rotor-router action of the Picard group on the set of spanning in-arborescences can be interpreted in terms of the linear equivalence.
