Projective re ection groups have been recently dened by the second author. They include a special class of groups denoted G(r; p; s; n) which contains all classical Weyl groups and more generally all the complex re ection groups of type G(r; p; n). In this paper we dene some statistics analogous to descent number and major index over the projective re ection groups G(r; p; s; n), and we compute several generating functions concerning these parameters. Some aspects of the representation theory of G(r; p; s; n), as distribution of one-dimensional characters and computation of Hilbert series of invariant algebras, are also treated.

Let $G$ and $H$ be two simple graphs and let $G*H$ denotes the graph theoretical product of $G$ by $H$. In this paper we provide some results on graded Betti numbers, Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity, projective dimension, $h$-vector, and Hilbert series of $G*H$ in terms of that information of $G$ and $H$. To do this, we will provide explicit formulae to compute graded Betti numbers, $h$-vector, and Hilbert series of disjoint union of complexes. Also we will prove that the family of graphs whose regularity equal the maximum number of pairwise $3$-disjoint edges, is closed under product of graphs.

Zonotopal algebra deals with ideals and vector spaces of polynomials that are related to several combinatorial and geometric structures defined by a finite sequence of vectors. Given such a sequence X, an integer k>=-1 and an upper set in the lattice of flats of the matroid defined by X, we define and study the associated hierarchical zonotopal power ideal. This ideal is generated by powers of linear forms. Its Hilbert series depends only on the matroid structure of X. Via the Tutte polynomial, it is related to various other matroid invariants, e.g. the shelling polynomial and the characteristic polynomial.
This work unifies and generalizes results by Ardila-Postnikov on power ideals and by Holtz-Ron and Holtz-Ron-Xu on (hierarchical) zonotopal algebra. We also generalize a result on zonotopal Cox modules that were introduced by Sturmfels-Xu.

We focus on combinatorial aspects of the Hilbert series of the cohomology ring of the moduli space of stable pointed curves of genus zero. We show its graded Hilbert series satisfies an integral operator identity. This is used to give asymptotic behavior, and in some cases, exact values, of the coefficients themselves. We then study the total dimension, that is, the sum of the coefficients of the Hilbert series. Its asymptotic behavior involves the Lambert W function, which has applications to classical tree enumeration, signal processing and fluid mechanics.

We use the notion of Borel generators to give alternative methods for computing standard invariants, such as associated primes, Hilbert series, and Betti numbers, of Borel ideals. Because there are generally few Borel generators relative to ordinary generators, this enables one to do manual computations much more easily. Moreover, this perspective allows us to find new connections to combinatorics involving Catalan numbers and their generalizations. We conclude with a surprising result relating the Betti numbers of certain principal Borel ideals to the number of pointed pseudo-triangulations of particular planar point sets.

In 2003, Haglund's {\sf bounce} statistic gave the first combinatorial interpretation of the $q,t$-Catalan numbers and the Hilbert series of diagonal harmonics. In this paper we propose a new combinatorial interpretation in terms of the affine Weyl group of type $A$. In particular, we define two statistics on affine permutations; one in terms of the Shi hyperplane arrangement, and one in terms of a new arrangement - which we call the Ish arrangement. We prove that our statistics are equivalent to the {\sf area'} and {\sf bounce} statistics of Haglund and Loehr. In this setting, we observe that {\sf bounce} is naturally expressed as a statistic on the root lattice. We extend our statistics in two directions: to "extended" Shi arrangements and to the bounded chambers of these arrangements. This leads to a (conjectural) combinatorial interpretation for all integral powers of the Bergeron-Garsia nabla operator applied to the elementary symmetric functions.
On the Hilbert series of vertex cover algebras of unmixed bipartite graphs
We compute the reduced Gröbner basis of the toric ideal with respect to a suitable monomial order and we study the Hilbert series of the vertex cover algebra $A(G)$, where $G$ is an unmixed bipartite graph without isolated vertices.

In this paper, we study the basic problem of counting independent sets in a graph and, in particular, the problem of counting antichains in a finite poset, from an algebraic perspective. We show that neither independence polynomials of bipartite Cohen-Macaulay graphs nor Hilbert series of initial ideals of radical zero-dimensional complete intersections ideals, can be evaluated in polynomial time, unless #P=P. Moreover, we present a family of radical zero-dimensional complete intersection ideals J_P associated to a finite poset P, for which we describe a universal Gröbner basis. This implies that the bottleneck in computing the dimension of the quotient by J_P (that is, the number of zeros of J_P) using Gröbner methods lies in the description of the standard monomials.

We study Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity for points of Schubert varieties in the complete flag variety, by Groebner degenerations of the Kazhdan-Lusztig ideal. In the covexillary case, we give a positive combinatorial rule for multiplicity by establishing (with a Groebner basis) a reduced and equidimensional limit whose Stanley-Reisner simplicial complex is homeomorphic to a shellable ball or sphere. We show that multiplicity counts the number of facets of this complex. We also obtain a formula for the Hilbert series of the local ring. In particular, our work gives a multiplicity rule for Grassmannian Schubert varieties, providing alternative statements and proofs to formulae of [Lakshmibai-Weyman '90], [Rosenthal-Zelevinsky '01], [Krattenthaler '01], [Kreiman-Lakshmibai '04] and [Woo-Yong '09]. We suggest extensions of our methodology to the general case.

We introduce a multiplicity Tutte polynomial M(x,y), with applications to zonotopes and toric arrangements. We prove that M(x,y) satisfies a deletion-restriction recurrence and has positive coefficients. The characteristic polynomial and the Poincare' polynomial of a toric arrangement are shown to be specializations of the associated polynomial M(x,y), likewise the corresponding polynomials for a hyperplane arrangement are specializations of the ordinary Tutte polynomial. Furthermore, M(1,y) is the Hilbert series of the related discrete Dahmen-Micchelli space, while M(x,1) computes the volume and the number of integral points of the associated zonotope.

Zonotopal algebra interweaves algebraic, geometric and combinatorial properties of a given linear map X. Of basic significance in this theory is the fact that the algebraic structures are derived from the geometry (via a non-linear procedure known as "the least map"), and that the statistics of the algebraic structures (e.g., the Hilbert series of various polynomial ideals) are combinatorial, i.e., computable using a simple discrete algorithm known as "the valuation function". On the other hand, the theory is somewhat rigid since it deals, for the given X, with exactly two pairs each of which is made of a nested sequence of three ideals: an external ideal (the smallest), a central ideal (the middle), and an internal ideal (the largest).
In this paper we show that the fundamental principles of zonotopal algebra as described in the previous paragraph extend far beyond the setup of external, central and internal ideals by building a whole hierarchy of new combinatorially defined zonotopal spaces.

Let $I$ be the ideal generated by alternating polynomials in two sets of $n$ variables. Haiman proved that the $q,t$-Catalan number is the Hilbert series of the graded vector space $M(=\bigoplus_{d_1,d_2}M_{d_1,d_2})$ spanned by a minimal set of generators for $I$. In this paper we give simple upper bounds on $\text{dim}M_{d_1, d_2}$ in terms of partition numbers, and find all bi-degrees $(d_1,d_2)$ such that $\dim M_{d_1, d_2}$ achieve the upper bounds. For such bi-degrees, we also find explicit bases for $M_{d_1, d_2}$. The main idea is to define and study a nontrivial linear map from $M$ to a polynomial ring $\C[ρ_1, ρ_2,...]$.

Let Δbe a finite sequence of n vectors from a vector space over any field. We consider the subspace of \operatorname{Sym}(V) spanned by \prod_{v \in S} v, where S is a subsequence of Δ. A result of Orlik and Terao provides a doubly indexed direct sum of this space. The main theorem is that the resulting Hilbert series is the Tutte polynomial evaluation T(Δ;1+x,y). Results of Ardila and Postnikov, Orlik and Terao, Terao, and Wagner are obtained as corollaries.
Positroid varieties I: juggling and geometry
While the intersection of the Grassmannian Bruhat decompositions for all coordinate flags is an intractable mess, the intersection of only the {\em cyclic shifts} of one Bruhat decomposition turns out to have many of the good properties of the Bruhat and Richardson decompositions. This decomposition coincides with the projection of the Richardson stratification of the flag manifold, studied by Lusztig, Rietsch, and Brown-Goodearl-Yakimov. However, its cyclic-invariance is hidden in this description. Postnikov gave many cyclic-invariant ways to index the strata, and we give a new one, by a subset of the affine Weyl group we call {\em bounded juggling patterns}. We adopt his terminology and call the strata {\em positroid varieties.} We show that positroid varieties are normal and Cohen-Macaulay, and are defined as schemes by the vanishing of Plucker coordinates. We compute their T-equivariant Hilbert series, and show that their associated cohomology classes are represented by affine Stanley functions. This latter fact lets us connect Postnikov's and Buch-Kresch-Tamvakis' approaches to quantum Schubert calculus. Our principal tools are the Frobenius splitting results for Richardson varieties as developed by Brion, Lakshmibai, and Littelmann, and the Hodge-Grobner degeneration of the Grassmannian. We show that each positroid variety degenerates to the projective Stanley-Reisner scheme of a shellable ball.

In type A, the q,t-Fuss-Catalan numbers can be defined as a bigraded Hilbert series of a module associated to the symmetric group. We generalize this construction to (finite) complex reflection groups and, based on computer experiments, we exhibit several conjectured algebraic and combinatorial properties of these polynomials with non-negative integer coefficients. We prove the conjectures for the dihedral groups and for the cyclic groups. Finally, we present several ideas how the q,t-Fuss-Catalan numbers could be related to some graded Hilbert series of modules arising in the context of rational Cherednik algebras and thereby generalize known connections.

The Orlik-Solomon algebra is the cohomology ring of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement A in C^n; it is the quotient of an exterior algebra E(V) on |A| generators. Orlik and Terao introduced a commutative analog S(V)/I of the Orlik-Solomon algebra to answer a question of Aomoto and showed the Hilbert series depends only on the intersection lattice L(A). Motivated by topological considerations, Falk and Randell introduced the property of 2-formality; we study the relation between 2-formality and the Orlik-Terao algebra. Our main result is a necessary and sufficient condition for 2-formality in terms of the quadratic component I_2 of the Orlik-Terao ideal I: 2-formality is determined by the tangent space T_p(V(I_2)) at a generic point p.

Koszul homology of monomial ideals provides a description of the structure of such ideals, not only from a homological point of view (free resolutions, Betti numbers, Hilbert series) but also from an algebraic viewpoint. In this paper we show that, in particular, the homology at degree (n-1), with n the number of indeterminates of the ring, plays an important role for this algebraic description in terms of Stanley and irreducible decompositions.
