In this paper, we define a Hopf algebra structure on the vector space spanned by packed words using a selection/quotient coproduct. We show that this algebra is free on its irreducible packed words. We also construct the Hilbert series of this Hopf algebra and we investigate its primitive elements.

The operation of squaring (coproduct followed by product) in a combinatorial Hopf algebra is shown to induce a Markov chain in natural bases. Chains constructed in this way include widely studied methods of card shuffling, a natural "rock-breaking" process, and Markov chains on simplicial complexes. Many of these chains can be explictly diagonalized using the primitive elements of the algebra and the combinatorics of the free Lie algebra. For card shuffling, this gives an explicit description of the eigenvectors. For rock-breaking, an explicit description of the quasi-stationary distribution and sharp rates to absorption follow.
Quasi-symmetric and non-commutative affine Schur functions
We introduce dual Hopf algebras which simultaneously combine the concepts of the k-Schur function theory with the quasi-symmetric Schur function theory. We construct dual basis of these Hopf algebras with remarkable properties.

Let $\A$ be a finitely generated semigroup with 0. An $\A$-module over $\fun$ (also called an $\A$--set), is a pointed set $(M,*)$ together with an action of $\A$. We define and study the Hall algebra $\H_{\A}$ of the category $\C_{\A}$ of finite $\A$--modules. $\H_{\A}$ is shown to be the universal enveloping algebra of a Lie algebra $\n_{\A}$, called the \emph{Hall Lie algebra} of $\C_{\A}$. In the case of the $\fm$ - the free monoid on one generator $\fm$, the Hall algebra (or more precisely the Hall algebra of the subcategory of nilpotent $\fm$-modules) is isomorphic to Kreimer's Hopf algebra of rooted forests. This perspective allows us to define two new commutative operations on rooted forests. We also consider the examples when $\A$ is a quotient of $\fm$ by a congruence, and the monoid $G \cup \{0\}$ for a finite group $G$.
Algebraic and combinatorial structures on pairs of twin binary trees

We give a new construction of a Hopf algebra defined first by Reading whose bases are indexed by objects belonging to the Baxter combinatorial family (i.e., Baxter permutations, pairs of twin binary trees, etc.). Our construction relies on the definition of the Baxter monoid, analog of the plactic monoid and the sylvester monoid, and on a Robinson-Schensted-like correspondence and insertion algorithm. Indeed, the Baxter monoid leads to the definition of a lattice structure over pairs of twin binary trees and the definition of a Hopf algebra. The algebraic properties of this Hopf algebra are studied and among other, multiplicative bases are provided, and freeness and self-duality proved.

We build, from the collection of all groups of unitriangular matrices, Hopf monoids in Joyal's category of species. Such structure is carried by the collection of class function spaces on those groups, and also by the collection of superclass function spaces, in the sense of Diaconis and Isaacs. Superclasses of unitriangular matrices admit a simple description from which we deduce a combinatorial model for the Hopf monoid of superclass functions, in terms of the Hadamard product of the Hopf monoids of linear orders and of set partitions. This implies a recent result relating the Hopf algebra of superclass functions on unitriangular matrices to symmetric functions in noncommuting variables. We determine the algebraic structure of the Hopf monoid: it is a free monoid in species, with the canonical Hopf structure. As an application, we derive certain estimates on the number of conjugacy classes of unitriangular matrices.

We present a bijection from planar reduced trees to planar rooted hypertrees, which extends Knuth's rotation correspondence between planar binary trees and planar rooted trees. The operadic counterpart of the new bijection is explained. Related to this, the space of planar reduced forests is endowed with a combinatorial Hopf algebra structure. The corresponding structure on the space of planar rooted hyperforests is also described.

We provide a Hopf algebra structure on the space of superclass functions on the unipotent upper triangular group of type D over a finite field based on a supercharacter theory constructed by André and Neto. Also, we make further comments with respect to types B and C. Type A was explores by M. Aguiar et. al (2010), thus this paper is a contribution to understand combinatorially the supercharacter theory of the other classical Lie types.

Snakes are analogues of alternating permutations defined for any Coxeter group. We study these objects from the point of view of combinatorial Hopf algebras, such as noncommutative symmetric functions and their generalizations. The main purpose is to show that several properties of the generating functions of snakes, such as differential equations or closed form as trigonometric functions, can be lifted at the level of noncommutative symmetric functions or free quasi-symmetric functions. The results take the form of algebraic identities for type B noncommutative symmetric functions, noncommutative supersymmetric functions and colored free quasi-symmetric functions.

In order to study some sets of probabilities, called induced averages by J. Ecalle, F. Menous introduces two grafting operators $ B^{+} $ and $ B^{-} $. With these two operators, we construct Hopf algebras of rooted and ordered trees $ \mathcal{B}^{i} $, $ i \in \mathbb{N}^{\ast} $, $ \mathcal{B}^{\infty} $ and $ \mathcal{B} $ satisfying the inclusion relations $ \mathcal{B}^{1} \subseteq \hdots \mathcal{B}^{i} \subseteq \mathcal{B}^{i+1} \subseteq \hdots \subseteq \mathcal{B}^{\infty} \subseteq \mathcal{B} $. We endow $ \mathcal{B} $ with a structure of duplicial dendriform bialgebra and we deduce that $ \mathcal{B} $ is cofree and self-dual. Finally, we introduce the notion of bigraft algebra and we prove that $ \mathcal{B} $ is generated as bigraft algebra by the element $ \tdun{1} $.
On some Hopf monoids in graphical species
Combinatorial Hopf algebras arise in a variety of applications. Recently, Aguiar and Mahajan showed how many well-studied Hopf algebras are closely related to Hopf monoids in species.
In this paper, we study Hopf monoids in graphical species, giving a `graph-theoretic' analogue to the work of Aguiar and Mahajan. In particular, several examples of Hopf monoids in graphical species are detailed, most of which are related to graph coloring, or hyperplane arrangements associated to graphs.
Extending the Tamari lattice to some compositions of species

An extension of the Tamari lattice to the multiplihedra is discussed, along with projections to the composihedra and the Boolean lattice. The multiplihedra and composihedra are sequences of polytopes that arose in algebraic topology and category theory. Here we describe them in terms of the composition of combinatorial species. We define lattice structures on their vertices, indexed by painted trees, which are extensions of the Tamari lattice and projections of the weak order on the permutations. The projections from the weak order to the Tamari lattice and the Boolean lattice are shown to be different from the classical ones. We generalize the Tamari lattice to graph tubings--as is also described by Ronco. We review how lattice structures often interact with the Hopf algebra structures, following Aguiar and Sottile who discovered the applications of Mobius inversion on the Tamari lattice to the Loday-Ronco Hopf algebra.

We describe a method for constructing characters of combinatorial Hopf algebras by means of integrals over certain polyhedral cones. This is based on ideas from resurgence theory, in particular on the construction of well-behaved averages induced by diffusion processes on the real line. We give several interpretations and proofs of the main result in terms of noncommutative symmetric and quasisymmetric functions, as well as generalizations involving matrix quasi-symmetric functions. The interpretation of noncommutative symmetric functions as alien operators in resurgence theory is also discussed, and a new family of Lie idempotents of descent algebras is derived from this interpretation.

We consider a q-analogue of the standard bilinear form on the commutative ring of symmetric functions. The q=-1 case leads to a Z-graded Hopf superalgebra which we call the algebra of odd symmetric functions. In the odd setting we describe counterparts of the elementary and complete symmetric functions, power sums, Schur functions, and combinatorial interpretations of associated change of basis relations.

Following Radford's proof of Lagrange's theorem for pointed Hopf algebras, we prove Lagrange's theorem for Hopf monoids in the category of connected species. As a corollary, we obtain necessary conditions for a given subspecies K of a Hopf monoid H to be a Hopf submonoid: the quotient of any one of the generating series of H by the corresponding generating series of K must have nonnegative coefficients. Other corollaries include a necessary condition for a sequence of nonnegative integers to be the sequence of dimensions of a Hopf monoid in the form of certain polynomial inequalities, and of a set-theoretic Hopf monoid in the form of certain linear inequalities. The latter express that the binomial transform of the sequence must be nonnegative.
Nonlocal, noncommutative diagrammatics and the linked cluster Theorems

Recent developments in quantum chemistry, perturbative quantum field theory, statistical physics or stochastic differential equations require the introduction of new families of Feynman-type diagrams. These new families arise in various ways. In some generalizations of the classical diagrams, the notion of Feynman propagator is extended to generalized propagators connecting more than two vertices of the graphs. In some others (introduced in the present article), the diagrams, associated to noncommuting product of operators inherit from the noncommutativity of the products extra graphical properties. The purpose of the present article is to introduce a general way of dealing with such diagrams. We prove in particular a "universal" linked cluster theorem and introduce, in the process, a Feynman-type "diagrammatics" that allows to handle simultaneously nonlocal (Coulomb-type) interactions, the generalized diagrams arising from the study of interacting systems (such as the ones where the ground state is not the vacuum but e.g. a vacuum perturbed by a magnetic or electric field, by impurities...) or Wightman fields (that is, expectation values of products of interacting fields). Our diagrammatics seems to be the first attempt to encode in a unified algebraic framework such a wide variety of situations. In the process, we promote two ideas. First, Feynman-type diagrammatics belong mathematically to the theory of linear forms on combinatorial Hopf algebras. Second, linked cluster-type theorems rely ultimately on Möbius inversion on the partition lattice. The two theories should therefore be introduced and presented accordingly
Some combinatorial aspects of quantum field theory

In this short survey we present the appearance of some combinatorial notions in quantum field theory. We first focus on topological graph polynomials (the Tutte polynomial and its multivariate version) and their relation with the parametric representation of the commutative $Φ^4$ field theory. We then generalize this to ribbon graphs and present the relation of the Bollobás-Riordan polynomial with the parametric representation of some $Φ^4$ field theory on the non-commutative Moyal space. We also review the rôle played by the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra as the combinatorial backbone of the renormalization process in field theories. We then show how this generalizes to the scalar $Φ^4$ field theory implemented on the non-commutative Moyal space. Finally, some perspectives for the further generalization of these tools to quantum gravity tensor models are briefly sketched.
Natural endomorphisms of quasi-shuffle Hopf algebras

The Hopf algebra of word-quasi-symmetric functions ($\WQSym$), a noncommutative generalization of the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions, can be endowed with an internal product that has several compatibility properties with the other operations on $\WQSym$. This extends constructions familiar and central in the theory of free Lie algebras, noncommutative symmetric functions and their various applications fields, and allows to interpret $\WQSym$ as a convolution algebra of linear endomorphisms of quasi-shuffle algebras. We then use this interpretation to study the fine structure of quasi-shuffle algebras (MZVs, free Rota-Baxter algebras...). In particular, we compute their Adams operations and prove the existence of generalized Eulerian idempotents, that is, of a canonical left-inverse to the natural surjection map to their indecomposables, allowing for the combinatorial construction of free polynomial generators for these algebras.

The graph algebra is a commutative, cocommutative, graded, connected incidence Hopf algebra, whose basis elements correspond to finite simple graphs and whose Hopf product and coproduct admit simple combinatorial descriptions. We give a new formula for the antipode in the graph algebra in terms of acyclic orientations; our formula contains many fewer terms than Takeuchi's and Schmitt's more general formulas for the antipode in an incidence Hopf algebra. Applications include several formulas (some old and some new) for evaluations of the Tutte polynomial.
Cofree compositions of coalgebras
We develop the notion of the composition of two coalgebras, which arises naturally in higher category theory and in the theory of species. We prove that the composition of two cofree coalgebras is again cofree, and we give sufficient conditions that ensure the composition is a one-sided Hopf algebra. We show these conditions are satisfied when one coalgebra is a graded Hopf operad D and the other is a connected graded coalgebra with coalgebra map to D. We conclude by computing the primitive elements for compositions of coalgebras built on the vertices of multiplihedra, composihedra, and hypercubes.
