Generalizing the notion of Newton polytope, we define the Newton-Okounkov body, respectively, for semigroups of integral points, graded algebras, and linear series on varieties. We prove that any semigroup in the lattice Z^n is asymptotically approximated by the semigroup of all the points in a sublattice and lying in a convex cone. Applying this we obtain several results: we show that for a large class of graded algebras, the Hilbert functions have polynomial growth and their growth coefficients satisfy a Brunn-Minkowski type inequality. We prove analogues of Fujita approximation theorem for semigroups of integral points and graded algebras, which imply a generalization of this theorem for arbitrary linear series. Applications to intersection theory include a far-reaching generalization of the Kushnirenko theorem (from Newton polytope theory) and a new version of the Hodge inequality. We also give elementary proofs of the Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality in convex geometry and its analogue in algebraic geometry.

We introduce a powerful connection between Ehrhart theory and additive number theory, and use it to produce infinitely many new classes of inequalities between the coefficients of the $h^*$-polynomial of a lattice polytope. This greatly improves upon the three known classes of inequalities, which were proved using techniques from commutative algebra and combinatorics. As an application, we deduce all possible `balanced' inequalities between the coefficients of the $h^*$-polynomial of a lattice polytope containing an interior lattice point, in dimension at most 6.
Balance and Abelian complexity of the Tribonacci word

G. Rauzy showed that the Tribonacci minimal subshift generated by the morphism $τ: 0\mapsto 01, 1\mapsto 02 and 2\mapsto 0$ is measure-theoretically conjugate to an exchange of three fractal domains on a compact set in $R^2$, each domain being translated by the same vector modulo a lattice. In this paper we study the Abelian complexity AC(n) of the Tribonacci word $t$ which is the unique fixed point of $τ$. We show that $AC(n)\in {3,4,5,6,7}$ for each $n\geq 1$, and that each of these five values is assumed. Our proof relies on the fact that the Tribonacci word is 2-balanced, i.e., for all factors $U$ and $V$ of $t$ of equal length, and for every letter $a \in {0,1,2}$, the number of occurrences of $a$ in $U$ and the number of occurrences of $a$ in $V$ differ by at most 2. While this result is announced in several papers, to the best of our knowledge no proof of this fact has ever been published. We offer two very different proofs of the 2-balance property of $t$. The first uses the word combinatorial properties of the generating morphism, while the second exploits the spectral properties of the incidence matrix of $τ$.

We describe a class of isolated nondegenerate hypersurface singularities that give a polynomial contribution to Batyrev's stringy E-function. These singularities are obtained by imposing a natural condition on the facets of the Newton polyhedron, and they are strictly canonical. We prove that Batyrev's conjecture concerning the nonnegativity of stringy Hodge numbers is true for complete varieties with such singularities, under some additional hypotheses on the defining polynomials (e.g. convenient or weighted homogeneous). The proof uses combinatorics on lattice polytopes. The results form a strong generalisation of previously obtained results for Brieskorn singularities.

Ismail et al. (Constr. Approx. {\bf 15} (1999) 69--81) proved the positivity of some trigonometric polynomials with single binomial coefficients. In this paper, we prove some similar results by replacing the binomial coefficients with products of two binomial coefficients.

The generating function for spanning forests on a lattice is related to the q-state Potts model in a certain q -> 0 limit, and extends the analogous notion for spanning trees, or dense self-avoiding branched polymers. Recent works have found a combinatorial perturbative equivalence also with the (quadratic action) O(n) model in the limit n -> -1, the expansion parameter t counting the number of components in the forest. We give a random-matrix formulation of this model on the ensemble of degree-k random planar lattices. For k = 3, a correspondence is found with the Kostov solution of the loop-gas problem, which arise as a reformulation of the (logarithmic action) O(n) model, at n = -2. Then, we show how to perform an expansion around the t = 0 theory. In the thermodynamic limit, at any order in t we have a finite sum of finite-dimensional Cauchy integrals. The leading contribution comes from a peculiar class of terms, for which a resummation can be performed exactly.

We give a construction of MV-polytopes of a complex semisimple algebraic group G in terms of the geometry of the Bott-Samelson variety and the affine building. This is done by using the construction of dense subsets of MV-cycles by Gaussent and Littelmann. They used LS-gallery to define subsets in the Bott-Samelson variety that map to subsets of the affine Grassmannian, whose closure are MV-cycles. Since points in the Bott-Samelson variety correspond to galleries in the affine building one can look at the image of a point in such a special subset under all retractions at infinity. We prove that these images can be used to construct the corresponding MV-polytope in an explicit way, by using the GGMS strata. Furthermore we give a combinatorial construction for these images by using the crystal structure of LS-galleries and the action of the ordinary Weyl group on the coweight lattice.

A vertex subset $S$ of a graph $G$ is a perfect (resp. quasiperfect) dominating set in $G$ if each vertex $v$ of $G\setminus S$ is adjacent to only one vertex ($d_v\in\{1,2\}$ vertices) of $S$. Perfect and quasiperfect dominating sets in the regular tessellation graph of Schläfli symbol $\{3,6\}$ and in its toroidal quotients are investigated, yielding the classification of their perfect dominating sets and most of their quasiperfect dominating sets $S$ with induced components of the form $K_ν$, where $ν\in\{1,2,3\}$ depends only on $S$.

We study the Hurwitz action of the classical braid group on factorisations of a Coxeter element c in a well-generated complex reflection group W. It is well-known that the Hurwitz action is transitive on the set of reduced decompositions of c in reflections. Our main result is a similar property for the primitive factorisations of c, i.e. factorisations with only one factor which is not a reflection. The motivation is the search for a geometric proof of Chapoton's formula for the number of chains of given length in the non-crossing partitions lattice NCP_W. Our proof uses the properties of the Lyashko-Looijenga covering and the geometry of the discriminant of W.

We apply results from Baryshnikov, Brady, Bressler and Pemantle (2008) to compute limiting probability profiles for various quantum random walks in one and two dimensions. Using analytic machinery we show some features of the limit distribution that are not evident in an empirical intensity plot of the time 10,000 distribution. Some conjectures are stated and computational techniques are discussed as well.

The Fibonacci dimension fdim(G) of a graph G is introduced as the smallest integer f such that G admits an isometric embedding into Gamma_f, the f-dimensional Fibonacci cube. We give bounds on the Fibonacci dimension of a graph in terms of the isometric and lattice dimension, provide a combinatorial characterization of the Fibonacci dimension using properties of an associated graph, and establish the Fibonacci dimension for certain families of graphs.
From the algorithmic point of view we prove that it is NP-complete to decide if fdim(G) equals to the isometric dimension of G, and that it is also NP-hard to approximate fdim(G) within (741/740)-epsilon. We also give a (3/2)-approximation algorithm for fdim(G) in the general case and a (1+epsilon)-approximation algorithm for simplex graphs.
Generalizations of Chung-Feller Theorem II
The classical Chung-Feller theorem [2] tells us that the number of Dyck paths of length $n$ with $m$ flaws is the $n$-th Catalan number and independent on $m$. L. Shapiro [9] found the Chung-Feller properties for the Motzkin paths. Mohanty's book [5] devotes an entire section to exploring Chung-Feller theorem. Many Chung-Feller theorems are consequences of the results in [5]. In this paper, we consider the $(n,m)$-lattice paths. We study two parameters for an $(n,m)$-lattice path: the non-positive length and the rightmost minimum length. We obtain the Chung-Feller theorems of the $(n,m)$-lattice path on these two parameters by bijection methods. We are more interested in the pointed $(n,m)$-lattice paths. We investigate two parameters for an pointed $(n,m)$-lattice path: the pointed non-positive length and the pointed rightmost minimum length. We generalize the results in [5]. Using the main results in this paper, we may find the Chung-Feller theorems of many different lattice paths.

We analyze the quantum ground state structure of a specific model of itinerant, strongly interacting lattice fermions. The interactions are tuned to make the model supersymmetric. Due to this, quantum ground states are in one-to-one correspondence with cohomology classes of the so-called independence complex of the lattice. Our main result is a complete description of the cohomology, and thereby of the quantum ground states, for a two-dimensional square lattice with periodic boundary conditions. Our work builds on results by J. Jonsson, who determined the Euler characteristic (Witten index) via a correspondence with rhombus tilings of the plane. We prove a theorem, first conjectured by P. Fendley, which relates dimensions of the cohomology at grade n to the number of rhombus tilings with n rhombi.

We describe the scaling limit of the nearest neighbour prudent walk on the square lattice, which performs steps uniformly in directions in which it does not see sites already visited. We show that the scaling limit is given by the process Z(u) = s_1 theta^+(3u/7) e_1 + s_2 theta^-(3u/7) e_2, where e_1, e_2 is the canonical basis, theta^+(t), resp. theta^-(t), is the time spent by a one-dimensional Brownian motion above, resp. below, 0 up to time t, and s_1, s_2 are two random signs. In particular, the asymptotic speed of the walk is well-defined in the L^1-norm and equals 3/7.

The associativity property, usually defined for binary functions, can be generalized to functions of a given fixed arity n>=1 as well as to functions of multiple arities. In this paper, we investigate these two generalizations in the case of polynomial functions over bounded distributive lattices and present explicit descriptions of the corresponding associative functions. We also show that, in this case, both generalizations of associativity are essentially the same.

We give a new, purely coding-theoretic proof of Koch's criterion on the tetrad systems of Type II codes of length 24 using the theory of harmonic weight enumerators. This approach is inspired by Venkov's approach to the classification of the root systems of Type II lattices in R^{24}, and gives a new instance of the analogy between lattices and codes.
Enumerating the Derangements of an $n$-Cube via Möbius Inversion
In $\mathcal L$, the semilattice of faces of an $n$-cube, we count the number of automorphisms of $\mathcal L$ that fix a given subalgebra -- either pointwise or as a subalgebra. By using Möbius inversion we get a formula for the number of derangements on the $n$-cube in terms of the Möbius function on the lattice of MR-subalgebras. We compute this Möbius function.
A Distributive Lattice Cover for Semilattices
We consider two constructions of an envelope for a finite locally distributive strong upper semilattice. The first is based on Birkhoff's representation of finite distributive lattices and the second on valuations on lattices. We show that these produce isomorphic envelopes.
Domino tilings with diagonal impurities
This paper studies the dimer model on the dual graph of the square-octagon lattice, which can be viewed as the domino tilings with impurities in some sense. In particular, under a certain boundary condition, we give an exact formula representing the probability of finding an impurity at a given site in a uniformly random dimer configuration in terms of simple random walks on the square lattice.
