Lozenge Tilings of Hexagons with Intrusions I: Generalized Intrusion
Published • View PublicationBIB
MacMahon's classical theorem on the number of boxed plane partitions has been generalized in several directions. One way to generalize the theorem is to view boxed plane partitions as lozenge tilings of a hexagonal region and then generalize it by making some holes in the region and counting its tilings. In this paper, we provide new regions whose numbers of lozenges tilings are given by simple product formulas. The regions we consider can be obtained from hexagons by removing structures called intrusions. In fact, we show that the tiling generating functions of those regions under certain weights are given by similar formulas. These give the $q$-analogue of the enumeration results.

Alternating sign matrices with reflective symmetry and plane partitions: $n+3$ pairs of equivalent statistics and a Cauchy-type identity
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 13 (2025): e168 • View PublicationBIB
Vertically symmetric alternating sign matrices (VSASMs) of order $2n+1$ are known to be equinumerous with lozenge tilings of a hexagon with side lengths $2n+2$, $2n$, $2n+2$, $2n$, $2n+2$, $2n$ and a central triangular hole of size $2$ that exhibit a cyclical as well as a vertical symmetry, but finding an explicit bijection proving this belongs to the most difficult problems in bijective combinatorics. Towards constructing such a bijection, we generalize the result by introducing certain natural extensions for both objects along with $n+3$ parameters and show that the multivariate generating functions with respect to these parameters coincide. This is a significant step from a constant number of equidistributed statistics to a linear number of statistics in $n$. The equinumeracy of VSASMs and the lozenge tilings is then an easy consequence of this result, which is obtained by specializing the generating functions to signed enumerations for both types of objects and then applying certain sign-reversing involutions. Another main result concerns the expansion of the multivariate generating function into symplectic characters as a sum over totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions, which is in perfect analogy to the situation for ordinary ASMs where the Schur expansion can be written as a sum over totally symmetric plane partitions. This is exciting as it is reminiscent of the well-known Cauchy identity, and the Cauchy identity does have a bijective proof using the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence, and thus the result raises the question of whether there is a variation of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence that does eventually lead to a bijective proof.

Graphene nanocones and Pascal matrices
I conjecture three identities for the determinant of adjacency matrices of graphene triangles and trapezia with Bloch (and more general) boundary conditions. For triangles, the parametric determinant is equal to the characteristic polynomial of the symmetric Pascal matrix. For trapezia it is equal to the determinant of a sub-matrix. Finally, the determinant of the tight binding matrix equals its permanent. The conjectures are supported by analytic evaluations and Mathematica, for moderate sizes. They establish connections with counting problems of partitions, lozenge tilings of hexagons, dense loops on a cylinder.

Dynamical Loop Equation
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce dynamical versions of loop (or Dyson-Schwinger) equations for large families of two--dimensional interacting particle systems, including Dyson Brownian motion, Nonintersecting Bernoulli/Poisson random walks, $β$--corners processes, uniform and Jack-deformed measures on Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, Macdonald processes, and $(q,κ)$-distributions on lozenge tilings. Under technical assumptions, we show that the dynamical loop equations lead to Gaussian field type fluctuations. As an application, we compute the limit shape for $(q,κ)$--distributions on lozenge tilings and prove that their height fluctuations converge to the Gaussian Free Field in an appropriate complex structure.

Colored vertex models and $k$-tilings of the Aztec diamond
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study $k$-tilings ($k$-tuples of domino tilings) of the Aztec diamond of rank $m$. We assign a weight to each $k$-tiling, depending on the number of dominos of certain types and the number of "interactions" between the tilings. Employing the colored vertex models introduced in earlier work to study supersymmetric LLT polynomials, we compute the generating polynomials of the $k$-tilings. We then prove some combinatorial results about $k$-tilings, including a bijection between $k$-tilings with no interactions and $1$-tilings, and we compute the arctic curves of the tilings for $t=0$ and $t\rightarrow\infty$. We also present some lozenge $k$-tilings of the hexagon and compute the arctic curves of the tilings for $t=0$.

Simple Relationships Between Lozenge Tiling Functions of Related Regions
We give a formula for the number of symmetric tilings of hexagons on the triangular lattice with unit triangles removed from arbitrary positions along two non-adjacent non-opposite sides. We show that for certain families of such regions, the ratios of their numbers of symmetric tilings are given by simple product formulas. We also prove that for certain weighted regions which arise when applying Ciucu's Factorization Theorem, the formulas for the weighted and unweighted counts of tilings have a simple explicit relationship.

Skew Howe duality and limit shapes of Young diagrams
Published in J. Lond. Math. Soc., 2023 • View PublicationBIB
We consider the skew Howe duality for the action of certain dual pairs of Lie groups $(G_1, G_2)$ on the exterior algebra $\bigwedge(\mathbb{C}^{n} \otimes \mathbb{C}^{k})$ as a probability measure on Young diagrams by the decomposition into the sum of irreducible representations. We prove a combinatorial version of this skew Howe for the pairs $(\mathrm{GL}_{n}, \mathrm{GL}_{k})$, $(\mathrm{SO}_{2n+1}, \mathrm{Pin}_{2k})$, $(\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}, \mathrm{Sp}_{2k})$, and $(\mathrm{Or}_{2n}, \mathrm{SO}_{k})$ using crystal bases, which allows us to interpret the skew Howe duality as a natural consequence of lattice paths on lozenge tilings of certain partial hexagonal domains. The $G_1$-representation multiplicity is given as a determinant formula using the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot lemma and as a product formula using Dodgson condensation. These admit natural $q$-analogs that we show equals the $q$-dimension of a $G_2$-representation (up to an overall factor of $q$), giving a refined version of the combinatorial skew Howe duality. Using these product formulas (at $q =1$), we take the infinite rank limit and prove the diagrams converge uniformly to the limit shape.

Edge Statistics for Lozenge Tilings of Polygons, II: Airy Line Ensemble
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Pi 13 (2025) e2 • View PublicationBIB
We consider uniformly random lozenge tilings of simply connected polygons subject to a technical assumption on their limit shape. We show that the edge statistics around any point on the arctic boundary, that is not a cusp or tangency location, converge to the Airy line ensemble. Our proof proceeds by locally comparing these edge statistics with those for a random tiling of a hexagon, which are well understood. To realize this comparison, we require a nearly optimal concentration estimate for the tiling height function, which we establish by exhibiting a certain Markov chain on the set of all tilings that preserves such concentration estimates under its dynamics.

Gaussian Unitary Ensemble in random lozenge tilings
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper establishes a universality result for scaling limits of uniformly random lozenge tilings of large domains. We prove that whenever a boundary of the domain has three adjacent straight segments inclined under 120 degrees to each other, the asymptotics of tilings near the middle segment is described by the GUE--corners process of random matrix theory. An important step in our argument is to show that fluctuations of the height function of random tilings on essentially arbitrary simply-connected domains of diameter $N$ have smaller magnitude than $N^{1/2}$.

Lozenge tilings and the Gaussian free field on a cylinder
Published • View PublicationBIB
We use the periodic Schur process, introduced in arXiv:math/0601019v1, to study the random height function of lozenge tilings (equivalently, dimers) on an infinite cylinder distributed under two variants of the $q^{\operatorname{vol}}$ measure. Under the first variant, corresponding to random cylindric partitions, the height function converges to a deterministic limit shape and fluctuations around it are given by the Gaussian free field in the conformal structure predicted by the Kenyon-Okounkov conjecture. Under the second variant, corresponding to an unrestricted dimer model on the cylinder, the fluctuations are given by the same Gaussian free field with an additional discrete Gaussian shift component. Fluctuations of the latter type have been previously conjectured for dimer models on planar domains with holes.

Lozenge tilings of a hexagon with a horizontal intrusion
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by a conjecture posed by Fulmek and Krattenthaler, we provide product formulas for the number of lozenge tilings of a semiregular hexagon containing a horizontal intrusion. As a direct corollary, we obtain a product formula for the number of boxed plane partitions with a certain restriction. We also investigate the asymptotic behavior of the ratio between the number of lozenge tilings of a semiregular hexagon containing a horizontal intrusion and that of a semiregular hexagon without an intrusion.

The generating function of lozenge tilings for a "quarter" of a hexagon, obtained with non--intersecting lattice paths
In a recent preprint, Lai and Rohatgi compute the generating functions of lozenge tilings of "quartered hexagons with dents" by applying the method of "graphical condensation". The purpose of this note is to exhibit how (a generalization of) Theorems 2.1 and 2.2 in Lai and Rohatgi's preprint can be achieved by the Lindström--Gessel--Viennot method of non--intersecting lattice paths and a certain determinant evaluation.

The quotient of generating functions of lozenge tilings for certain regions derived from hexagons, obtained with non--intersecting lattice paths
In a recent preprint, Lai showed that the quotient of generating functions of weighted lozenge tilings of two "half hexagons with lateral dents", which differ only in width, factors nicely, and the same is true for the quotient of generating functions of weighted lozenge tilings of two "quarter hexagons with lateral dents". Lai achieved this by using "graphical condensation" (i.e., application of a certain Pfaffian identity to the weighted enumeration of matchings). The purpose of this note is to exhibit how this can be done by the Lindström--Gessel--Viennot method for nonintersecting lattice paths. For the case of "half hexagons", basically the same observation, but restricted to mere enumeration (i.e., all weights of lozenge tilings are equal to $1$), is contained in a recent preprint of Condon.

Height Fluctuations of Random Lozenge Tilings Through Nonintersecting Random Walks
In this paper we study height fluctuations of random lozenge tilings of polygonal domains on the triangular lattice through nonintersecting Bernoulli random walks. For a large class of polygons which have exactly one horizontal upper boundary edge, we show that these random height functions converge to a Gaussian Free Field as predicted by Kenyon and Okounkov [28]. A key ingredient of our proof is a dynamical version of the discrete loop equations as introduced by Borodin, Guionnet and Gorin [5], which might be of independent interest.

Lozenge tilings of hexagons with holes on three crossing lines
Published • View PublicationBIB
The enumeration of lozenge tilings of hexagons with holes has received much attention during the last three decades. One notable feature is that a lot of the recent development involved Kuo's graphical condensation. Motivated by Ciucu, Lai and Rohatgi's work on tilings of hexagons with a removed triad of bowties, in this paper, we show that the ratio of numbers of lozenge tilings of two more general regions is expressed as a simple product formula. Our proof does not involve the graphical condensation method. The proof is short and direct. We also provide a corresponding formula for cyclically symmetric lozenge tilings. Several previous results can be easily deduced from our generalization.

Plane partitions of shifted double staircase shape
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 183, 2021 • View PublicationBIB
We give a product formula for the number of shifted plane partitions of shifted double staircase shape with bounded entries. This is the first new example of a family of shapes with a plane partition product formula in many years. The proof is based on the theory of lozenge tilings; specifically, we apply the "free boundary" Kuo condensation due to Ciucu.

A certain ratio of generating functions of lozenge tilings, obtained with non--intersecting lattice paths
In a recent preprint, Lai worked out the quotient of generating functions of weighted lozenge tilings of two "half hexagons with lateral dents" which differ only in width. Lai achieved this by using "graphical condensation" (i.e., application of a certain Pfaffian identity to the weighted enumeration of matchings). The purpose of this note is to exhibit how this can be done by the Lindström--Gessel--Viennot method for nonintersecting lattice paths in a quite simple way. Basically the same observation, but restricted to mere enumeration (i.e., all weights of lozenge tilings are equal to $1$), is contained in a recent preprint of Condon.

Hidden symmetries of weighted lozenge tilings

We study the weighted partition function for lozenge tilings, with weights given by multivariate rational functions originally defined by Morales, Pak and Panova (2019) in the context of the factorial Schur functions. We prove that this partition function is symmetric for large families of regions. We employ both combinatorial and algebraic proofs.

Our formula implies that for certain families of such regions, the ratios of their numbers of tilings are given by simple product formulas.

Enumeration of symmetric Gelfand--Tsetlin patterns by linear algebra
We shall present a ``linear algebraic'' proof (involving some calculations in the algebra of linear operators on a vector space of polynomials and some manipulations of determinants) of the formula for the enumeration of symmetric Gelfand--Tsetlin patterns with fixed bottom row, which was proved by Tri Lai in the context of enumerating symmetric lozenge tilings of a ``halved'' hexagon with ``dents''.
