Fertility, Strong Fertility, and Postorder Wilf Equivalence
We introduce "fertility Wilf equivalence," "strong fertility Wilf equivalence," and "postorder Wilf equivalence," three variants of Wilf equivalence for permutation classes that formalize some phenomena that have appeared in the study of West's stack-sorting map. We introduce "sliding operators" and show that they induce useful bijections among sets of valid hook configurations. Combining these maps with natural decompositions of valid hook configurations, we give infinitely many examples of fertility, strong fertility, and postorder Wilf equivalences. As a consequence, we obtain infinitely many joint equidistribution results concerning many permutation statistics. In one very special case, we reprove and extensively generalize a result of Bouvel and Guibert. Another case reproves and generalizes a result of the current author. A separate very special case proves and generalizes a conjecture of the current author concerning stack-sorting preimages and the Boolean-Catalan numbers. We end with two open questions.

A code for square permutations and convex permutominoes
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 21 no. 2, Permutation Patters 2018 (December 30, 2019) dmtcs:5354 • View Publication • BIB
In this article we consider square permutations, a natural subclass of permutations defined in terms of geometric conditions, that can also be described in terms of pattern avoiding permutations, and convex permutoninoes, a related subclass of polyominoes. While these two classes of objects arised independently in various contexts, they play a natural role in the description of certain random horizontally and vertically convex grid configurations. We propose a common approach to the enumeration of these two classes of objets that allows us to explain the known common form of their generating functions, and to derive new refined formulas and linear time random generation algorithms for these objects and the associated grid configurations.

Expanding Polynomials and Pairs of Polynomials in Characteristic 0
We begin a generalized study of sum-product type phenomenon in different fields by considering pairs $P(x,y)$ and $Q(x,y)$ of two variable polynomials that simultaneously exhibit small symmetric expansion. Our first result is that such $P(x,y)$ and $Q(x,y)$ over $\mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{C}$ have very similar structure, obtained by employing semi-algebraic geometry/o-minimality. Then using model-theoretic transfer and basic Galois theory we deduce results for fields of characteristic $0$ and characteristic $p$ when $p$ is large. We obtain as corollaries a generalization of Elekes-Rónyai type structural results to arbitrary characteristic 0 fields, and a strengthening of these classic results in a symmetric case of natural interest. We note a related bound of $5/4$ in the exponent for the sum-product problem in finite fields of large characteristic, although a lower bound for this characteristic cannot be computed from our methods.

Strict log-concavity of the Kirchhoff polynomial and its applications to the strong Lefschetz property
Anari, Gharan, and Vinzant proved (complete) log-concavity of the basis generating functions for all matroids. From the viewpoint of combinatorial Hodge theory, it is natural to ask whether these functions are "strictly" log-concave for simple matroids. In this paper, we show this strictness for simple graphic matroids, that is, we show that Kirchhoff polynomials of simple graphs are strictly log-concave. Our key observation is that the Kirchhoff polynomial {of a complete graph} can be seen as the (irreducible) relative invariant of a certain prehomogeneous vector space, which may be independently interesting in its own right. Furthermore, we prove that for any $a_i\in\mathbb{R}_{>0}$, $a_1x_1+\cdots+a_nx_n\in R^1_{M}$ satisfies the strong Lefschetz property (moreover, Hodge--Riemann bilinear relation) at degree one of the Artinian Gorenstein algebra $R^*_M$ associated to a graphic matroid $M$, which is defined by Maeno and Numata for all matroids.

Oresme Polynomials and Their Derivatives
We study the problem of generalization of Oresme numbers with a new sequence of numbers called Oresme polynomials. Moreover, by using the matrix methods for Oresme polynomials, we obtain the identities including the general bilinear index-reduction formula of these numbers. Further, Oresme polynomials that are natural extensions of the $k$-Oresme numbers are introduced and some relations for the derivatives of these polynomials in the form of convolution are proved.
An Algorithmic Theory of Integer Programming
We study the general integer programming problem where the number of variables $n$ is a variable part of the input. We consider two natural parameters of the constraint matrix $A$: its numeric measure $a$ and its sparsity measure $d$. We show that integer programming can be solved in time $g(a,d)\textrm{poly}(n,L)$, where $g$ is some computable function of the parameters $a$ and $d$, and $L$ is the binary encoding length of the input. In particular, integer programming is fixed-parameter tractable parameterized by $a$ and $d$, and is solvable in polynomial time for every fixed $a$ and $d$. Our results also extend to nonlinear separable convex objective functions. Moreover, for linear objectives, we derive a strongly-polynomial algorithm, that is, with running time $g(a,d)\textrm{poly}(n)$, independent of the rest of the input data. We obtain these results by developing an algorithmic framework based on the idea of iterative augmentation: starting from an initial feasible solution, we show how to quickly find augmenting steps which rapidly converge to an optimum. A central notion in this framework is the Graver basis of the matrix $A$, which constitutes a set of fundamental augmenting steps. The iterative augmentation idea is then enhanced via the use of other techniques such as new and improved bounds on the Graver basis, rapid solution of integer programs with bounded variables, proximity theorems and a new proximity-scaling algorithm, the notion of a reduced objective function, and others. As a consequence of our work, we advance the state of the art of solving block-structured integer programs. In particular, we develop near-linear time algorithms for $n$-fold, tree-fold, and $2$-stage stochastic integer programs. We also discuss some of the many applications of these classes.

Completion and deficiency problems
Given a partial Steiner triple system (STS) of order $n$, what is the order of the smallest complete STS it can be embedded into? The study of this question goes back more than 40 years. In this paper we answer it for relatively sparse STSs, showing that given a partial STS of order $n$ with at most $r \le \varepsilon n^2$ triples, it can always be embedded into a complete STS of order $n+O(\sqrt{r})$, which is asymptotically optimal. We also obtain similar results for completions of Latin squares and other designs. This suggests a new, natural class of questions, called deficiency problems. Given a global spanning property $\mathcal{P}$ and a graph $G$, we define the deficiency of the graph $G$ with respect to the property $\mathcal{P}$ to be the smallest positive integer $t$ such that the join $G\ast K_t$ has property $\mathcal{P}$. To illustrate this concept we consider deficiency versions of some well-studied properties, such as having a $K_k$-decomposition, Hamiltonicity, having a triangle-factor and having a perfect matching in hypergraphs. The main goal of this paper is to propose a systematic study of these problems; thus several future research directions are also given.

Asymptotic sign coherence conjecture
Published in Experimental Mathematics 31 (2022) 497-505 • View Publication • BIB
The sign coherence phenomenon is an important feature of c-vectors in cluster algebras with principal coefficients. In this note, we consider a more general version of c-vectors defined for arbitrary cluster algebras of geometric type and formulate a conjecture describing their asymptotic behavior. This conjecture, which is called the asymptotic sign coherence conjecture, states that for any infinite sequence of matrix mutations that satisfies certain natural conditions, the corresponding c-vectors eventually become sign coherent. We prove this conjecture for rank 2 cluster algebras of infinite type and for a particular sequence of mutations in a cluster algebra associated with the Markov quiver.

On some generalizations of the property $B$-problem of an $n$-uniform hypergraph
The extremal problem of hypergraph colorings related to Erdős--Hajnal property $B$-problem is considered. Let $k$ be a natural number. The problem is to find the value of $m_k(n)$ equal to the minimal number of edges in an $n$-uniform hypergraph not admitting $2$-colorings of the vertex set such that every edge of the hypergraph contains at least $k$ vertices of each color. In this paper we obtain new lower bounds for $m_k(n).$

A limit theorem for small cliques in inhomogeneous random graphs
Published in J. Graph Theory 97 (2021), no. 4, 578-599 • View Publication • BIB
The theory of graphons comes with a natural sampling procedure, which results in an inhomogeneous variant of the Erdős--Rényi random graph, called $W$-random graphs. We prove, via the method of moments, a limit theorem for the number of $r$-cliques in such random graphs. We show that, whereas in the case of dense Erdős--Rényi random graphs the fluctuations are normal of order $n^{r-1}$, the fluctuations in the setting of $W$-random graphs may be of order $0, n^{r-1}$, or $n^{r-0.5}$. Furthermore, when the fluctuations are of order $n^{r-0.5}$ they are normal, while when the fluctuations are of order $n^{r-1}$ they exhibit either normal or a particular type of chi-square behavior whose parameters relate to spectral properties of $W$. These results can also be deduced from a general setting [Janson and Nowicki, PTRF 1991], based on the projection method. In addition to providing alternative proofs, our approach makes direct links to the theory of graphons.

Functorial invariants of trees and their cones
We study the category whose objects are trees (with or without roots) and whose morphisms are contractions. We show that the corresponding contravariant module categories are Noetherian, and we study two natural families of modules over these categories. The first takes a tree to a graded piece of the homology of its unordered configuration space, or to the homology of the unordered configuration space of its cone. The second takes a tree to a graded piece of the intersection homology of the reciprocal plane of its cone, which is a vector space whose dimension is given by a Kazhdan-Lusztig coefficient. We prove finite generation results for each of these modules, which allow us to obtain results about the growth of Betti numbers of configuration spaces and of Kazhdan-Lusztig coefficients of graphical matroids.
Scattering Equations: From Projective Spaces to Tropical Grassmannians
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a natural generalization of the scattering equations, which connect the space of Mandelstam invariants to that of points on ${\mathbb{CP}^1}$, to higher-dimensional projective spaces $\mathbb{CP}^{k-1}$. The standard, $k=2$ Mandelstam invariants, $s_{ab}$, are generalized to completely symmetric tensors $\textsf{s}_{a_1a_2\ldots a_k}$ subject to a `massless' condition $\textsf{s}_{a_1a_2\cdots a_{k-2}\,b\,b}=0$ and to `momentum conservation'. The scattering equations are obtained by constructing a potential function and computing its critical points. We mainly concentrate on the $k=3$ case: study solutions and define the generalization of biadjoint scalar amplitudes. We compute all `biadjoint amplitudes' for $(k,n)=(3,6)$ and find a direct connection to the tropical Grassmannian. This leads to the notion of $k=3$ Feynman diagrams. We also find a concrete realization of the new kinematic spaces, which coincides with the spinor-helicity formalism for $k=2$, and provides analytic solutions analogous to the MHV ones.
Sets of iterated Partitions and the Bell iterated Exponential Integers
It is well known that the Bell numbers represent the total number of partitions of an n-set. Similarly, the Stirling numbers of the second kind, represent the number of k-partitions of an n-set. In this paper we introduce a certain partitioning process that gives rise to a sequence of sets of "nested" partitions. We prove that at stage m, the cardinality of the resulting set will equal the m-th order Bell number. This set-theoretic interpretation enables us to make a natural definition of higher order Stirling numbers and to study the combinatorics of these entities. The cardinality of the elements of the constructed "hyper partition" sets are explored.

Three Convolution Inequalities on the Real Line with Connections to Additive Combinatorics
Published in Journal of Number Theory 207, p. 42-55 (2020) • View Publication • BIB
We discuss three convolution inequalities that are connected to additive combinatorics. Cloninger and the second author showed that for nonnegative $f \in L^1(-1/4, 1/4)$, $$ \max_{-1/2 \leq t \leq 1/2} \int_{\mathbb{R}}{f(t-x) f(x) dx} \geq 1.28 \left( \int_{-1/4}^{1/4}{f(x) dx}\right)^2$$ which is related to $g-$Sidon sets (1.28 cannot be replaced by 1.52). We prove a dual statement, related to difference bases, and show that for $f \in L^1(\mathbb{R})$, $$ \min_{0 \leq t \leq 1}\int_{\mathbb{R}}{f(x) f(x+t) dx} \leq 0.42 \|f\|_{L^1}^2,$$ where the constant 1/2 is trivial, 0.42 cannot be replaced by 0.37. This suggests a natural conjecture about the asymptotic structure of $g-$difference bases. Finally, we show for all functions $f \in L^1(\mathbb{R}) \cap L^2(\mathbb{R})$, $$ \int_{-\frac{1}{2}}^{\frac{1}{2}}{ \int_{\mathbb{R}}{f(x) f(x+t) dx}dt} \leq 0.91 \|f\|_{L^1}\|f\|_{L^2}$$

Modified log-Sobolev inequalities for strongly log-concave distributions
We show that the modified log-Sobolev constant for a natural Markov chain which converges to an $r$-homogeneous strongly log-concave distribution is at least $1/r$. Applications include a sharp mixing time bound for the bases-exchange walk for matroids, and a concentration bound for Lipschitz functions over these distributions.
Strong cliques and forbidden cycles
Given a graph $G$, the strong clique number $ω_2'(G)$ of $G$ is the cardinality of a largest collection of edges every pair of which are incident or connected by an edge in $G$. We study the strong clique number of graphs missing some set of cycle lengths. For a graph $G$ of large enough maximum degree $Δ$, we show among other results the following: $ω_2'(G)\le5Δ^2/4$ if $G$ is triangle-free; $ω_2'(G)\le3(Δ-1)$ if $G$ is $C_4$-free; $ω_2'(G)\leΔ^2$ if $G$ is $C_{2k+1}$-free for some $k\ge 2$. These bounds are attained by natural extremal examples. Our work extends and improves upon previous work of Faudree, Gyárfás, Schelp and Tuza (1990), Mahdian (2000) and Faron and Postle (2019). We are motivated by the corresponding problems for the strong chromatic index.

Keyed hash function from large girth expander graphs
In this paper we present an algorithm to compute keyed hash function (message authentication code MAC). Our approach uses a family of expander graphs of large girth denoted $D(n,q)$, where $n$ is a natural number bigger than one and $q$ is a prime power. Expander graphs are known to have excellent expansion properties and thus they also have very good mixing properties. All requirements for a good MAC are satisfied in our method and a discussion about collisions and preimage resistance is also part of this work. The outputs closely approximate the uniform distribution and the results we get are indistinguishable from random sequences of bits. Exact formulas for timing are given in term of number of operations per bit of input. Based on the tests, our method for implementing DMAC shows good efficiency in comparison to other techniques. 4 operations per bit of input can be achieved. The algorithm is very flexible and it works with messages of any length. Many existing algorithms output a fixed length tag, while our constructions allow generation of an arbitrary length output, which is a big advantage.

Maximal State Complexity and Generalized de Bruijn Words
We compute the exact maximum state complexity for the language consisting of $m$ words of length $N$, and characterize languages achieving the maximum. We also consider a special case, namely languages $C(w)$ consisting of the conjugates of a single word $w$. The words for which the maximum state complexity of $C(w)$ is achieved turn out to be a natural generalization of de Bruijn words. We show that generalized de Bruijn words exist for each length and consider the number of them.

Distribution of variables in lambda-terms with restrictions on De Bruijn indices and De Bruijn levels
We investigate the number of variables in two special subclasses of lambda-terms that are restricted by a bound of the number of abstractions between a variable and its binding lambda, the so-called De-Bruijn index, or by a bound of the nesting levels of abstractions, \textit{i.e.}, the number of De Bruijn levels, respectively. These restrictions are on the one hand very natural from a practical point of view, and on the other hand they simplify the counting problem compared to that of unrestricted lambda-terms in such a way that the common methods of analytic combinatorics are applicable. We will show that the total number of variables is asymptotically normally distributed for both subclasses of lambda-terms with mean and variance asymptotically equal to $Cn$ and $\tilde{C}n$, respectively, where the constants $C$ and $\tilde{C}$ depend on the bound that has been imposed. So far we just derived closed formulas for the constants in case of the class of lambda-terms with bounded De Bruijn index. However, for the other class of lambda-terms that we consider, namely lambda-terms with a bounded number of De Bruijn levels, we investigate the number of variables, as well as abstractions and applications, in the different De Bruijn levels and thereby exhibit a so-called "unary profile" that attains a very interesting shape.

Polyhedral products and features of their homotopy theory
A polyhedral product is a natural subspace of a Cartesian product that is specified by a simplicial complex. The modern formalism arose as a generalization of the spaces known as moment-angle complexes which were developed within the nascent subject of toric topology. This field, which began as a topological approach to toric geometry and aspects of symplectic geometry, has expanded rapidly in recent years. The investigation of polyhedral products and their homotopy theoretic properties has developed to the point where they are studied in various fields of mathematics far removed from their origin. In this survey, we provide a brief historical overview of the development of this subject, summarize many of the main results and describe applications.
