Counting permutations by alternating descents
Published • View PublicationBIB
We find the exponential generating function for permutations with all valleys even and all peaks odd, and use it to determine the asymptotics for its coefficients, answering a question posed by Liviu Nicolaescu. The generating function can be expressed as the reciprocal of a sum involving Euler numbers. We give two proofs of the formula. The first uses a system of differential equations. The second proof derives the generating function directly from general permutation enumeration techniques, using noncommutative symmetric functions. The generating function is an "alternating" analogue of David and Barton's generating function for permutations with no increasing runs of length 3 or more. Our general results give further alternating analogues of permutation enumeration formulas, including results of Chebikin and Remmel.

Hopf Algebras of m-permutations, (m+1)-ary trees, and m-parking functions
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics 117 (2020) 102019 • View PublicationBIB
The m-Tamari lattice of F. Bergeron is an analogue of the clasical Tamari order defined on objects counted by Fuss-Catalan numbers, such as m-Dyck paths or (m+1)-ary trees. On another hand, the Tamari order is related to the product in the Loday-Ronco Hopf algebra of planar binary trees. We introduce new combinatorial Hopf algebras based on (m+1)-ary trees, whose structure is described by the m-Tamari lattices. In the same way as planar binary trees can be interpreted as sylvester classes of permutations, we obtain (m+1)-ary trees as sylvester classes of what we call m-permutations. These objects are no longer in bijection with decreasing (m+1)-ary trees, and a finer congruence, called metasylvester, allows us to build Hopf algebras based on these decreasing trees. At the opposite, a coarser congruence, called hyposylvester, leads to Hopf algebras of graded dimensions (m+1)^{n-1}, generalizing noncommutative symmetric functions and quasi-symmetric functions in a natural way. Finally, the algebras of packed words and parking functions also admit such m-analogues, and we present their subalgebras and quotients induced by the various congruences.

0-Hecke algebra action on the Stanley-Reisner ring of the Boolean algebra
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 19 (2015) 293--323 • View PublicationBIB
We define an action of the 0-Hecke algebra of type A on the Stanley-Reisner ring of the Boolean algebra. By studying this action we obtain a family of multivariate noncommutative symmetric functions, which specialize to the noncommutative Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions and their (q,t)-analogues introduced by Bergeron and Zabrocki, and to a more general family of noncommutative symmetric functions having parameters associated with paths in binary trees introduced recently by Lascoux, Novelli, and Thibon. We also obtain multivariate quasisymmetric function identities, which specialize to results of Garsia and Gessel on generating functions of multivariate distributions of permutation statistics.

Noncommutative irreducible characters of the symmetric group and noncommutative Schur functions
Published in J. Comb. 4:403--418 (2013) • View PublicationBIB
In the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions, Sym, the basis of Schur functions is distinguished since every Schur function is isomorphic to an irreducible character of a symmetric group under the Frobenius characteristic map. In this note we show that in the Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions, Nsym, of which Sym is a quotient, the recently discovered basis of noncommutative Schur functions exhibits that every noncommutative Schur function is isomorphic to a noncommutative irreducible character of a symmetric group when working in noncommutative character theory. We simultaneously show that a second basis of Nsym consisting of Young noncommutative Schur functions also satisfies that every element is isomorphic to a noncommutative irreducible character of a symmetric group.
The algebraic combinatorics of snakes
Published in J. Combinatorial Theory A 119 (2012), 1613-1638 • View PublicationBIB
Snakes are analogues of alternating permutations defined for any Coxeter group. We study these objects from the point of view of combinatorial Hopf algebras, such as noncommutative symmetric functions and their generalizations. The main purpose is to show that several properties of the generating functions of snakes, such as differential equations or closed form as trigonometric functions, can be lifted at the level of noncommutative symmetric functions or free quasi-symmetric functions. The results take the form of algebraic identities for type B noncommutative symmetric functions, noncommutative supersymmetric functions and colored free quasi-symmetric functions.
Noncommutative symmetric functions with matrix parameters
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 2012 • View PublicationBIB
We define new families of noncommutative symmetric functions and quasi-symmetric functions depending on two matrices of parameters, and more generally on parameters associated with paths in a binary tree. Appropriate specializations of both matrices then give back the two-vector families of Hivert, Lascoux, and Thibon and the noncommutative Macdonald functions of Bergeron and Zabrocki.
Mould calculus, polyhedral cones, and characters of combinatorial Hopf algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
We describe a method for constructing characters of combinatorial Hopf algebras by means of integrals over certain polyhedral cones. This is based on ideas from resurgence theory, in particular on the construction of well-behaved averages induced by diffusion processes on the real line. We give several interpretations and proofs of the main result in terms of noncommutative symmetric and quasisymmetric functions, as well as generalizations involving matrix quasi-symmetric functions. The interpretation of noncommutative symmetric functions as alien operators in resurgence theory is also discussed, and a new family of Lie idempotents of descent algebras is derived from this interpretation.

Natural endomorphisms of quasi-shuffle Hopf algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Hopf algebra of word-quasi-symmetric functions ($\WQSym$), a noncommutative generalization of the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions, can be endowed with an internal product that has several compatibility properties with the other operations on $\WQSym$. This extends constructions familiar and central in the theory of free Lie algebras, noncommutative symmetric functions and their various applications fields, and allows to interpret $\WQSym$ as a convolution algebra of linear endomorphisms of quasi-shuffle algebras. We then use this interpretation to study the fine structure of quasi-shuffle algebras (MZVs, free Rota-Baxter algebras...). In particular, we compute their Adams operations and prove the existence of generalized Eulerian idempotents, that is, of a canonical left-inverse to the natural surjection map to their indecomposables, allowing for the combinatorial construction of free polynomial generators for these algebras.
Skew quasisymmetric Schur functions and noncommutative Schur functions
Published in Adv. Math., 226:4492--4532 (2011) • View PublicationBIB
Recently a new basis for the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions $QSym$, called quasisymmetric Schur functions, has been introduced by Haglund, Luoto, Mason, van Willigenburg. In this paper we extend the definition of quasisymmetric Schur functions to introduce skew quasisymmetric Schur functions. These functions include both classical skew Schur functions and quasisymmetric Schur functions as examples, and give rise to a new poset $\mathcal{L}_C$ that is analogous to Young's lattice. We also introduce a new basis for the Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions $NSym$. This basis of $NSym$ is dual to the basis of quasisymmetric Schur functions and its elements are the pre-image of the Schur functions under the forgetful map $χ: NSym \rightarrow Sym$. We prove that the multiplicative structure constants of the noncommutative Schur functions, equivalently the coefficients of the skew quasisymmetric Schur functions when expanded in the quasisymmetric Schur basis, are nonnegative integers, satisfying a Littlewood-Richardson rule analogue that reduces to the classical Littlewood-Richardson rule under $χ$. As an application we show that the morphism of algebras from the algebra of Poirier-Reutenauer to $Sym$ factors through $NSym$. We also extend the definition of Schur functions in noncommuting variables of Rosas-Sagan in the algebra $NCSym$ to define quasisymmetric Schur functions in the algebra $NCQSym$. We prove these latter functions refine the former and their properties, and project onto quasisymmetric Schur functions under the forgetful map. Lastly, we show that by suitably labeling $\mathcal{L}_C$, skew quasisymmetric Schur functions arise in the theory of Pieri operators on posets.

The Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for k-Schur functions
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 118(5) (2011) 1588-1607 • View PublicationBIB
We prove the Murgnaghan--Nakayama rule for $k$-Schur functions of Lapointe and Morse, that is, we give an explicit formula for the expansion of the product of a power sum symmetric function and a $k$-Schur function in terms of $k$-Schur functions. This is proved using the noncommutative $k$-Schur functions in terms of the nilCoxeter algebra introduced by Lam and the affine analogue of noncommutative symmetric functions of Fomin and Greene.

The (1-E)-transform in combinatorial Hopf algebras
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 33 (2011), 277-312 • View PublicationBIB
We extend to several combinatorial Hopf algebras the endomorphism of symmetric functions sending the first power-sum to zero and leaving the other ones invariant. As a transformation of alphabets, this is the (1-E)-transform, where E is the exponential alphabet, whose elementary symmetric functions are e_n=1/n!. In the case of noncommutative symmetric functions, we recover Schocker's idempotents for derangement numbers [Discr. Math. 269 (2003), 239]. From these idempotents, we construct subalgebras of the descent algebras analogous to the peak algebras and study their representation theory. The case of WQSym leads to similar subalgebras of the Solomon-Tits algebras. In FQSym, the study of the transformation boils down to a simple solution of the Tsetlin library in the uniform case.

Generalized descent patterns in permutations and associated Hopf algebras

Descents in permutations or words are defined from the relative position of two consecutive letters. We investigate a statistic involving patterns of k consecutive letters, and show that it leads to Hopf algebras generalizing noncommutative symmetric functions and quasi-symmetric functions.

Colored trees and noncommutative symmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\CRF_S$ denote the category of $S$-colored rooted forests, and $\H_{\CRF_S}$ denote its Ringel-Hall algebra as introduced in \cite{KS}. We construct a homomorphism from a $K^+_0 (\CRF_S)$--graded version of the Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions to $\H_{\CRF_S}$. Dualizing, we obtain a homomorphism from the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra to a $K^+_0 (\CRF_S)$--graded version of the algebra of quasisymmetric functions. This homomorphism is a refinement of one considered by W. Zhao in \cite{Z}.

Rooted trees and symmetric functions: Zhao's homomorphism and the commutative hexagon
Published in in Vertex Operator Algebras and Related Areas, M. Bergvelt et. al. (eds.), AMS, Providence, 2009, pp. 85-95 • View PublicationBIB
Recent work on perturbative quantum field theory has led to much study of the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra. Its (graded) dual, the Grossman-Larson Hopf algebra of rooted trees, had already been studied by algebraists. L. Foissy introduced a noncommutative version of the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra, which turns out to be self-dual. Using some homomorphisms defined by the author and W. Zhao, we describe a commutative diagram that relates the aforementioned Hopf algebras to each other and to the Hopf algebras of symmetric functions, noncommutative symmetric functions, and quasi-symmetric functions.

Noncommutative Analogs of Monomial Symmetric Functions, Cauchy Identity, and Hall Scalar Product
This paper introduces noncommutative analogs of monomial symmetric functions and fundamental noncommutative symmetric functions. The expansion of ribbon Schur functions in both of these basis is nonnegative. With these functions at hand, one can derive a noncommutative Cauchy identity as well as study a noncommutative scalar product implied by Cauchy identity. This scalar product seems be the noncommutative analog of Hall scalar product in the commutative theory.

The Hecke group algebra of a Coxeter group and its representation theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let W be a finite Coxeter group. We define its Hecke-group algebra by gluing together appropriately its group algebra and its 0-Hecke algebra. We describe in detail this algebra (dimension, several bases, conjectural presentation, combinatorial construction of simple and indecomposable projective modules, Cartan map) and give several alternative equivalent definitions (as symmetry preserving operator algebra, as poset algebra, as commutant algebra, ...). In type A, the Hecke-group algebra can be described as the algebra generated simultaneously by the elementary transpositions and the elementary sorting operators acting on permutations. It turns out to be closely related to the monoid algebras of respectively nondecreasing functions and nondecreasing parking functions, the representation theory of which we describe as well. This defines three towers of algebras, and we give explicitly the Grothendieck algebras and coalgebras given respectively by their induction products and their restriction coproducts. This yields some new interpretations of the classical bases of quasi-symmetric and noncommutative symmetric functions as well as some new bases.
Permutation statistics related to a class of noncommutative symmetric functions and generalizations of the Genocchi numbers

We prove conjectures of the third author [L. Tevlin, Proc. FPSAC'07, Tianjin] on two new bases of noncommutative symmetric functions: the transition matrices from the ribbon basis have nonnegative integral coefficients. This is done by means of two composition-valued statistics on permutations and packed words, which generalize the combinatorics of Genocchi numbers.
