In 2004 Rosas and Sagan asked whether there was a way to define a basis in the algebra of symmetric functions in noncommuting variables, NCSym, having properties analogous to the classical Schur functions. This was because they had constructed a partial such set that was not a basis. We answer their question by defining Schur functions in noncommuting variables using a noncommutative analogue of the Jacobi-Trudi determinant. Our Schur functions in NCSym map to classical Schur functions under commutation, and a subset of them indexed by set partitions forms a basis for NCSym. Amongst other properties, Schur functions in NCSym also satisfy a noncommutative analogue of the product rule for classical Schur functions in terms of skew Schur functions.
We also show how Schur functions in NCSym are related to Specht modules, and naturally refine the Rosas-Sagan Schur functions. Moreover, by generalizing Rosas-Sagan Schur functions to skew Schur functions in the natural way, we prove noncommutative analogues of the Littlewood-Richardson rule and coproduct rule for them. Finally, we relate our functions to noncommutative symmetric functions by proving a subset of our functions are natural extensions of noncommutative ribbon Schur functions, and immaculate functions indexed by integer partitions.

We give a simple proof of a major index determinant formula in the symmetric group discovered by Krattenthaler and first proved by Thibon using noncommutative symmetric functions. We do so by proving a factorization of an element in the group ring of the symmetric group. By applying similar methods to the groups of signed permutations and colored permutations, we prove determinant formulas in these groups as conjectured by Krattenthaler.

We show that the ring of symmetric functions in superspace is a cocommutative and self-dual Hopf algebra. We provide formulas for the action of the coproduct and the antipode on various bases of that ring. We introduce the ring sQSym of quasisymmetric functions in superspace and show that it is a Hopf algebra. We give explicitly the product, coproduct and antipode on the basis of monomial quasisymmetric functions in superspace. We prove that the Hopf dual of sQSym, the ring sNSym of noncommutative symmetric functions in superspace, has a multiplicative basis dual to the monomial quasisymmetric functions in superspace.

Many families of combinatorial objects have a Hopf monoid structure. Aguiar and Ardila introduced the Hopf monoid of generalized permutahedra and showed that it contains various other notable combinatorial families as Hopf submonoids, including graphs, posets, and matroids. We introduce the Hopf monoid of orbit polytopes, which is generated by the generalized permutahedra that are invariant under the action of the symmetric group. We show that modulo normal equivalence, these polytopes are in bijection with integer compositions. We interpret the Hopf structure through this lens, and we show that applying the first Fock functor to this Hopf monoid gives a Hopf algebra of compositions. We describe the character group of the Hopf monoid of orbit polytopes in terms of noncommutative symmetric functions, and we give a combinatorial interpretation of the basic character and its polynomial invariant.

This article serves as an introduction to several recent developments in the study of quasisymmetric functions. The focus of this survey is on connections between quasisymmetric functions and the combinatorial Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions, appearances of quasisymmetric functions within the theory of Macdonald polynomials, and analogues of symmetric functions. Topics include the significance of quasisymmetric functions in representation theory (such as representations of the 0-Hecke algebra), recently discovered bases (including analogues of well-studied symmetric function bases), and applications to open problems in symmetric function theory.

We introduce a ring of noncommutative shifted symmetric functions based on an integer-indexed sequence of shift parameters. Using generating series and quasideterminants, this multiparameter approach produces deformations of the ring of noncommutative symmetric functions. Shifted versions of ribbon Schur functions are defined and form a basis for the ring. Further, we produce analogues of Jacobi-Trudi and Nägelsbach-Kostka formulas, a duality anti-algebra isomorphism, shifted quasi-Schur functions, and Giambelli's formula in this setup. In addition, an analogue of power sums is provided, satisfying versions of Wronski and Newton formulas. Finally, a realization of these noncommutative shifted symmetric functions as rational functions in noncommuting variables is given. These realizations have a shifted symmetry under exchange of the variables and are well-behaved under extension of the list of variables.

We show that the reciprocal of a partial sum with 2m terms of the alternating exponential series is the exponential generating function for permutations in which every increasing run has length congruent to 0 or 1 modulo 2m. More generally we study polynomials whose reciprocals are exponential generating functions for permutations whose run lengths are restricted to certain congruence classes, and extend these results to noncommutative symmetric functions that count words with the same restrictions on run lengths.

We define a new basis of the algebra of quasi-symmetric functions by lifting the cycle-index polynomials of symmetric groups to noncommutative polynomials with coefficients in the algebra of free quasi-symmetric functions, and then projecting the coefficients to $QSym$. By duality, we obtain a basis of noncommutative symmetric functions, for which a product formula and a recurrence in the form of a combinatorial complex are obtained. This basis allows to identify noncommutative symmetric functions with the quotient of FQSym induced by the pattern-replacement relation $321 \equiv 231$ and $312 \equiv 132$.
Quasisymmetric Power Sums

In the 1995 paper entitled "Noncommutative symmetric functions," Gelfand, et. al. defined two noncommutative symmetric function analogues for the power sum basis of the symmetric functions, along with analogues for the elementary and the homogeneous bases. They did not consider the noncommutative symmetric power sum duals in the quasisymmetric functions, which have since been explored only in passing by Derksen and Malvenuto-Reutenauer. These two distinct quasisymmetric power sum bases are the topic of this paper. In contrast to the simplicity of the symmetric power sums, or the other well known bases of the quasisymmetric functions, the quasisymmetric power sums have a more complex combinatorial description. As a result, although symmetric function proofs often translate directly to quasisymmetric analogues, this is not the case for quasisymmetric power sums. Neither is there a model for working with the quasisymmetric power sums in the work of Gelfand, et. al., which relies heavily on quasi-determinants (which can only be exploited by duality for our purposes) and is not particularly combinatorial in nature. This paper therefore offers a first glimpse at working with these two relatively unstudied quasisymmetric bases, avoiding duality where possible to encourage a previously unexplored combinatorial understanding.

Since the early work of Richard Stanley, it has been observed that several permutation statistics have a remarkable property with respect to shuffles of permutations. We formalize this notion of a shuffle-compatible permutation statistic and introduce the shuffle algebra of a shuffle-compatible permutation statistic, which encodes the distribution of the statistic over shuffles of permutations. This paper develops a theory of shuffle-compatibility for descent statistics (statistics that depend only on the descent set and length) which has close connections to the theory of $P$-partitions, quasisymmetric functions, and noncommutative symmetric functions. We use our framework to prove that many descent statistics are shuffle-compatible and to give explicit descriptions of their shuffle algebras, thus unifying past results of Stanley, Gessel, Stembridge, Aguiar-Bergeron-Nyman, and Petersen.

We prove several identities expressing polynomials counting permutations by various descent statistics in terms of Eulerian polynomials, extending results of Stembridge, Petersen, and Brändén. Additionally, we find $q$-exponential generating functions for $q$-analogues of these descent statistic polynomials that also keep track of the inversion number or inverse major index. We also present identities relating several of these descent statistic polynomials to refinements of type B Eulerian polynomials and flag descent polynomials by the number of negative letters of a signed permutation. Our methods include permutation enumeration techniques involving noncommutative symmetric functions, Brändén's modified Foata-Strehl action, and a group action of Petersen on signed permutations. Notably, the modified Foata-Strehl action yields an analogous relation between Narayana polynomials and the joint distribution of the peak number and descent number over 231-avoiding permutations, which we also interpret in terms of binary trees and Dyck paths.

The number of alternating runs is a natural permutation statistic. We show it can be used to define some commutative subalgebras of the symmetric group algebra, and more precisely of the descent algebra. The Eulerian peak algebras naturally appear as subalgebras of our run algebras. We also calculate the orthogonal idempotents for run algebras in terms of noncommutative symmetric functions.

We investigate the combinatorial properties of the functional equation $φ[h(z)]=h(qz)$ for the conjugation of a formal diffeomorphism $φ$ of $\mathbb{C}$ to its linear part $z\mapsto qz$. This is done by interpreting the functional equation in terms of symmetric functions, and then lifting it to noncommutative symmetric functions. We describe explicitly the expansion of the solution in terms of plane trees and prove that its expression on the ribbon basis has coefficients in ${\mathbb N}[q]$ after clearing the denominators $(q)_n$. We show that the conjugacy equation can be lifted to a quadratic fixed point equation in the free triduplicial algebra on one generator. This can be regarded as a $q$-deformation of the duplicial interpretation of the noncommutative Lagrange inversion formula. Finally, these calculations are interpreted in terms of the group of the operad of Stasheff polytopes, and are related to Ecalle's arborified expansion by means of morphisms between various Hopf algebras of trees.

We generalize the Hopf algebras of free quasisymmetric functions, quasisymmetric functions, noncommutative symmetric functions, and symmetric functions to certain representations of the category of all finite Coxeter systems and its dual category. We investigate their connections with the representation theory of 0-Hecke algebras of finite Coxeter systems. Restricted to type B and D we obtain dual graded modules and comodules over the corresponding Hopf algebras in type A.

In his Ph.D. thesis, Ira Gessel proved a reciprocity formula for noncommutative symmetric functions which enables one to count words and permutations with restrictions on the lengths of their increasing runs. We generalize Gessel's theorem to allow for a much wider variety of restrictions on increasing run lengths, and use it to complete the enumeration of permutations with parity restrictions on peaks and valleys, and to give a systematic method for obtaining generating functions for permutation statistics that are expressible in terms of increasing runs. Our methods can also be used to obtain analogous results for alternating runs in permutations.

A 0-Hecke algebra is a deformation of the group algebra of a Coxeter group. Based on work of Norton and Krob--Thibon, we introduce a tableau approach to the representation theory of 0-Hecke algebras of type A, which resembles the classic approach to the representation theory of symmetric groups by Young tableaux and tabloids. We extend this approach to type B and D, and obtain a correspondence between the representation theory of 0-Hecke algebras of type B and D and quasisymmetric functions and noncommutative symmetric functions of type B and D. Other applications are also provided.

Motivated by work of Buch on set-valued tableaux in relation to the K-theory of the Grassmannian, Lam and Pylyavskyy studied six combinatorial Hopf algebras that can be thought of as K-theoretic analogues of the Hopf algebras of symmetric functions, quasisymmetric functions, noncommutative symmetric functions, and of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations. They described the bialgebra structure in all cases that were not yet known but left open the question of finding explicit formulas for the antipode maps. We give combinatorial formulas for the antipode map for the K-theoretic analogues of the symmetric functions, quasisymmetric functions, and noncommutative symmetric functions.
Antipodes and involutions

If H is a connected, graded Hopf algebra, then Takeuchi's formula can be used to compute its antipode. However, there is usually massive cancellation in the result. We show how sign-reversing involutions can sometimes be used to obtain cancellation-free formulas. We apply this idea to nine different examples. We rederive known formulas for the antipodes in the Hopf algebra of polynomials, the shuffle Hopf algebra, the Hopf algebra of quasisymmertic functions in both the monomial and fundamental bases, the Hopf algebra of multi-quasisymmetric functions in the fundamental basis, and the incidence Hopf algebra of graphs. We also find cancellation-free expressions for particular values of the antipode in the immaculate basis for the noncommutative symmetric functions as well as the Malvenuto-Reutenauer and Porier-Reutenauer Hopf algebras, some of which are the first of their kind. We include various conjectures and suggestions for future research.
Hopf Algebras in Combinatorics
These notes -- originating from a one-semester class by their second author at the University of Minnesota -- survey some of the most important Hopf algebras appearing in combinatorics. After introducing coalgebras, bialgebras and Hopf algebras in general, we study the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions, including Zelevinsky's axiomatic characterization of it as a "positive self-adjoint Hopf algebra" and its application to the representation theory of symmetric and (briefly) finite general linear groups. The notes then continue with the quasisymmetric and the noncommutative symmetric functions, some Hopf algebras formed from graphs, posets and matroids, and the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations. Among the results surveyed are the Littlewood-Richardson rule and other symmetric function identities, Zelevinsky's structure theorem for PSHs, the antipode formula for P-partition enumerators, the Aguiar-Bergeron-Sottile universal property of QSym, the theory of Lyndon words, the Gessel-Reutenauer bijection, and Hazewinkel's polynomial freeness of QSym. The notes are written with a graduate student reader in mind, being mostly self-contained but requiring a good familiarity with multilinear algebra and -- for the representation-theory applications -- basic group representation theory.
