Recently a new basis for the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions $QSym$, called quasisymmetric Schur functions, has been introduced by Haglund, Luoto, Mason, van Willigenburg. In this paper we extend the definition of quasisymmetric Schur functions to introduce skew quasisymmetric Schur functions. These functions include both classical skew Schur functions and quasisymmetric Schur functions as examples, and give rise to a new poset $\mathcal{L}_C$ that is analogous to Young's lattice. We also introduce a new basis for the Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions $NSym$. This basis of $NSym$ is dual to the basis of quasisymmetric Schur functions and its elements are the pre-image of the Schur functions under the forgetful map $χ: NSym \rightarrow Sym$. We prove that the multiplicative structure constants of the noncommutative Schur functions, equivalently the coefficients of the skew quasisymmetric Schur functions when expanded in the quasisymmetric Schur basis, are nonnegative integers, satisfying a Littlewood-Richardson rule analogue that reduces to the classical Littlewood-Richardson rule under $χ$.
As an application we show that the morphism of algebras from the algebra of Poirier-Reutenauer to $Sym$ factors through $NSym$. We also extend the definition of Schur functions in noncommuting variables of Rosas-Sagan in the algebra $NCSym$ to define quasisymmetric Schur functions in the algebra $NCQSym$. We prove these latter functions refine the former and their properties, and project onto quasisymmetric Schur functions under the forgetful map. Lastly, we show that by suitably labeling $\mathcal{L}_C$, skew quasisymmetric Schur functions arise in the theory of Pieri operators on posets.
Noncommutative integrability, paths and quasi-determinants

In previous work, we showed that the solution of certain systems of discrete integrable equations, notably $Q$ and $T$-systems, is given in terms of partition functions of positively weighted paths, thereby proving the positive Laurent phenomenon of Fomin and Zelevinsky for these cases. This method of solution is amenable to generalization to non-commutative weighted paths. Under certain circumstances, these describe solutions of discrete evolution equations in non-commutative variables: Examples are the corresponding quantum cluster algebras [BZ], the Kontsevich evolution [DFK09b] and the $T$-systems themselves [DFK09a]. In this paper, we formulate certain non-commutative integrable evolutions by considering paths with non-commutative weights, together with an evolution of the weights that reduces to cluster algebra mutations in the commutative limit. The general weights are expressed as Laurent monomials of quasi-determinants of path partition functions, allowing for a non-commutative version of the positive Laurent phenomenon. We apply this construction to the known systems, and obtain Laurent positivity results for their solutions in terms of initial data.

We prove the Murgnaghan--Nakayama rule for $k$-Schur functions of Lapointe and Morse, that is, we give an explicit formula for the expansion of the product of a power sum symmetric function and a $k$-Schur function in terms of $k$-Schur functions. This is proved using the noncommutative $k$-Schur functions in terms of the nilCoxeter algebra introduced by Lam and the affine analogue of noncommutative symmetric functions of Fomin and Greene.
Lie theory of finite simple groups and the Roth property
In noncommutative geometry a `Lie algebra' or bidirectional bicovariant differential calculus on a finite group is provided by a choice of an ad-stable generating subset C stable under inversion. We study the associated Killing form. For the universal calculus associated to C=G \ {e} we show that the magnitude of the Killing form μ=\sum_{a,b\in C}K^{-1}_{a,b} is defined for all finite groups (even when K is not invertible) and that a finite group is Roth, meaning its conjugation representation contains every irreducible, iff μ is not equal to 1/(N-1), where N is the number of conjugacy classes. We show further that the Killing form is invertible in the Roth case, and that the Killing form restricted to the (N-1)-dimensional subspace of invariant vectors is invertible iff the finite group is almost-Roth group (meaning its conjugation representation has at most one missing irreducible). It is known that most finite simple groups are Roth and that all are almost Roth. At the other extreme from the universal calculus we prove that the generating conjugacy class in the case of the dihedral groups D_{2n} with n odd has invertible Killing form, and the same for the 2-cycles conjugacy class in any S_n. We also compute some eigenvalues of the Killing form in the case of the n-cycles class in S_n. Finally, we verify invertibility of the Killing forms of all real conjugacy classes in all nonabelian finite simple groups to order 75,000, by computer, and we conjecture this to extend to all nonabelian finite simple groups.
The (1-E)-transform in combinatorial Hopf algebras

We extend to several combinatorial Hopf algebras the endomorphism of symmetric functions sending the first power-sum to zero and leaving the other ones invariant. As a transformation of alphabets, this is the (1-E)-transform, where E is the exponential alphabet, whose elementary symmetric functions are e_n=1/n!. In the case of noncommutative symmetric functions, we recover Schocker's idempotents for derangement numbers [Discr. Math. 269 (2003), 239].
From these idempotents, we construct subalgebras of the descent algebras analogous to the peak algebras and study their representation theory. The case of WQSym leads to similar subalgebras of the Solomon-Tits algebras. In FQSym, the study of the transformation boils down to a simple solution of the Tsetlin library in the uniform case.

Descents in permutations or words are defined from the relative position of two consecutive letters. We investigate a statistic involving patterns of k consecutive letters, and show that it leads to Hopf algebras generalizing noncommutative symmetric functions and quasi-symmetric functions.
The MacMahon Master Theorem for right quantum superalgebras and higher Sugawara operators for $\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}(m|n)$

We prove an analogue of the MacMahon Master Theorem for the right quantum superalgebras. In particular, we obtain a new and simple proof of this theorem for the right quantum algebras. In the super case the theorem is then used to construct higher order Sugawara operators for the affine Lie superalgebra $\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}(m|n)$ in an explicit form. The operators are elements of a completed universal enveloping algebra of $\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}(m|n)$ at the critical level. They occur as the coefficients in the expansion of a noncommutative Berezinian and as the traces of powers of generator matrices. The same construction yields higher Hamiltonians for the Gaudin model associated with the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{gl}(m|n)$. We also use the Sugawara operators to produce algebraically independent generators of the algebra of singular vectors of any generic Verma module at the critical level over the affine Lie superalgebra.

Let $\CRF_S$ denote the category of $S$-colored rooted forests, and $\H_{\CRF_S}$ denote its Ringel-Hall algebra as introduced in \cite{KS}. We construct a homomorphism from a $K^+_0 (\CRF_S)$--graded version of the Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions to $\H_{\CRF_S}$. Dualizing, we obtain a homomorphism from the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra to a $K^+_0 (\CRF_S)$--graded version of the algebra of quasisymmetric functions. This homomorphism is a refinement of one considered by W. Zhao in \cite{Z}.

We use Hopf algebras to prove a version of the Littlewood-Richardson rule for skew Schur functions, which implies a conjecture of Assaf and McNamara. We also establish skew Littlewood-Richardson rules for Schur P- and Q-functions and noncommutative ribbon Schur functions, as well as skew Pieri rules for k-Schur functions, dual k-Schur functions, and for the homology of the affine Grassmannian of the symplectic group.
Approximating the Permanent via Nonabelian Determinants

Celebrated work of Jerrum, Sinclair, and Vigoda has established that the permanent of a {0,1} matrix can be approximated in randomized polynomial time by using a rapidly mixing Markov chain. A separate strand of the literature has pursued the possibility of an alternate, purely algebraic, polynomial-time approximation scheme. These schemes work by replacing each 1 with a random element of an algebra A, and considering the determinant of the resulting matrix. When A is noncommutative, this determinant can be defined in several ways. We show that for estimators based on the conventional determinant, the critical ratio of the second moment to the square of the first--and therefore the number of trials we need to obtain a good estimate of the permanent--is (1 + O(1/d))^n when A is the algebra of d by d matrices. These results can be extended to group algebras, and semi-simple algebras in general. We also study the symmetrized determinant of Barvinok, showing that the resulting estimator has small variance when d is large enough. However, for constant d--the only case in which an efficient algorithm is known--we show that the critical ratio exceeds 2^{n} / n^{O(d)}. Thus our results do not provide a new polynomial-time approximation scheme for the permanent. Indeed, they suggest that the algebraic approach to approximating the permanent faces significant obstacles.
We obtain these results using diagrammatic techniques in which we express matrix products as contractions of tensor products. When these matrices are random, in either the Haar measure or the Gaussian measure, we can evaluate the trace of these products in terms of the cycle structure of a suitably random permutation. In the symmetrized case, our estimates are then derived by a connection with the character theory of the symmetric group.

Noncommutative invariant theory is a generalization of the classical invariant theory of the action of $SL(2,\IC)$ on binary forms. The dimensions of the spaces of invariant noncommutative polynomials coincide with the numbers of certain noncrossing partitions. We give an elementary combinatorial explanation of this fact by constructing a noncrossing basis of the homogeneous components. Using the theory free stochastic measures this provides a combinatorial proof of the Molien-Weyl formula in this setting.

F-polynomials and g-vectors were defined by Fomin and Zelevinsky to give a formula which expresses cluster variables in a cluster algebra in terms of the initial cluster data. A quantum cluster algebra is a certain noncommutative deformation of a cluster algebra. In this paper, we define and prove the existence of analogous quantum F-polynomials for quantum cluster algebras. We prove some properties of quantum F-polynomials. In particular, we give a recurrence relation which can be used to compute them. Finally, we compute quantum F-polynomials and g-vectors for a certain class of cluster variables, which includes all cluster variables in type A quantum cluster algebras.
Root polytopes, triangulations, and the subdivision algebra, I
The type A_n full root polytope is the convex hull in R^{n+1} of the origin and the points e_i-e_j for 1<= i<j <= n+1. Given a tree T on the vertex set [n+1], the associated root polytope P(T) is the intersection of the full root polytope with the cone generated by the vectors e_i-e_j, where (i, j) is an edge of T, i<j. The reduced forms of a certain monomial m[T] in commuting variables x_{ij} under the reduction x_{ij}x_{jk} --> x_{ik}x_{ij}+x_{jk}x_{ik}+βx_{ik}, can be interpreted as triangulations of P(T). Using these triangulations, the volume and Ehrhart polynomial of P(T) are obtained. If we allow variables x_{ij} and x_{kl} to commute only when i, j, k, l are distinct, then the reduced form of m[T] is unique and yields a canonical triangulation of P(T) in which each simplex corresponds to a noncrossing alternating forest. Most generally, the reduced forms of all monomials in the noncommutative case are unique.
Non-crossing linked partitions, the partial order << on NC(n), and the S-transform

The paper establishes a connection between two recent combinatorial developments in free probability: the non-crossing linked partitions introduced by Dykema in 2007 to study the S-transform, and the partial order << on NC(n) introduced by Belinschi and Nica in 2008 in order to study relations between free and Boolean probability. More precisely, one has a canonical bijection between NCL(n) (the set of all non-crossing linked partitions of {1, ..., n}) and the set {(p,q) | p,q in NC(n), p<<q}. As a consequence of this bijection, one gets an alternative description of Dykema's formula expressing the moments of a noncommutative random variable a in terms of the coefficients of the reciprocal S-transform 1/S_a. Moreover, due to the Boolean features of <<, this formula can be simplified to a form which resembles the moment-cumulant formula from c-free probability.

Recent work on perturbative quantum field theory has led to much study of the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra. Its (graded) dual, the Grossman-Larson Hopf algebra of rooted trees, had already been studied by algebraists. L. Foissy introduced a noncommutative version of the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra, which turns out to be self-dual. Using some homomorphisms defined by the author and W. Zhao, we describe a commutative diagram that relates the aforementioned Hopf algebras to each other and to the Hopf algebras of symmetric functions, noncommutative symmetric functions, and quasi-symmetric functions.

We introduce a shifted analog of the plactic monoid of Lascoux and Schützenberger, the \emph{shifted plactic monoid}. It can be defined in two different ways: via the \emph{shifted Knuth relations}, or using Haiman's mixed insertion.
Applications include: a new combinatorial derivation (and a new version of) the shifted Littlewood-Richardson Rule; similar results for the coefficients in the Schur expansion of a Schur $P$-function; a shifted counterpart of the Lascoux-Schützenberger theory of noncommutative Schur functions in plactic variables; a characterization of shifted tableau words; and more.

In this paper we obtain the LU-decomposition of a noncommutative linear system of equations that, in the rank one case, characterizes the image of the Lepowsky homomorphism $U(\lieg)^{K}\to U(\liek)^{M}\otimes U(\liea)$. This LU-decomposition can be transformed into very simple matrix identities, where the entries of the matrices involved belong to a special class of Jacobi polynomials. In particular, each entry of the L part of the original system is expressed in terms of a single ultraspherical Jacobi polynomial. In turns, these matrix identities yield a biorthogonality relation between the ultraspherical Jacobi polynomials.

As special cases we obtain elementary proofs of the Capelli identity from classical invariant theory and of Turnbull's Capelli-type identities for symmetric and antisymmetric matrices.

We introduce analogs of the Hopf algebra of Free quasi-symmetric functions with bases labelled by colored permutations. When the color set is a semigroup, an internal product can be introduced. This leads to the construction of generalized descent algebras associated with wreath products $Γ\wr\SG_n$ and to the corresponding generalizations of quasi-symmetric functions. The associated Hopf algebras appear as natural analogs of McMahon's multisymmetric functions. As a consequence, we obtain an internal product on ordinary multi-symmetric functions. We extend these constructions to Hopf algebras of colored parking functions, colored non-crossing partitions and parking functions of type B.
