Parity of the coefficients of certain eta-quotients
Published in J. Number Theory 235 (2022), 275--304 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the parity of the coefficients of certain eta-quotients, extensively examining the case of $m$-regular partitions. Our theorems concern the density of their odd values, in particular establishing lacunarity modulo 2 for specified coefficients; self-similarities modulo 2; and infinite families of congruences in arithmetic progressions. For all $m \leq 28$, we either establish new results of these types where none were known, extend previous ones, or conjecture that such results are impossible. All of our work is consistent with a new, overarching conjecture that we present for arbitrary eta-quotients, greatly extending Parkin-Shanks' classical conjecture for the partition function. We pose several other open questions throughout the paper, and conclude by suggesting a list of specific research directions for future investigations in this area.
Generalizations of Alder's Conjecture via a Conjecture of Kang and Park
Published • View PublicationBIB
Integer partitions have long been of interest to number theorists, perhaps most notably Ramanujan, and are related to many areas of mathematics including combinatorics, modular forms, representation theory, analysis, and mathematical physics. Here, we focus on partitions with gap conditions and partitions with parts coming from fixed residue classes. Let $Δ_d^{(a,b)}(n) = q_d^{(a)}(n) - Q_d^{(b)}(n)$ where $q_d^{(a)}(n)$ counts the number of partitions of $n$ into parts with difference at least $d$ and size at least $a$, and $Q_d^{(b)}(n)$ counts the number of partitions into parts $\equiv \pm b \pmod{d + 3}$. In 1956, Alder conjectured that $Δ_d^{(1,1)}(n) \geq 0$ for all positive $n$ and $d$. This conjecture was proved partially by Andrews in 1971, by Yee in 2008, and was fully resolved by Alfes, Jameson and Lemke Oliver in 2011. Alder's conjecture generalizes several well-known partition identities, including Euler's theorem that the number of partitions of $n$ into odd parts equals the number of partitions of $n$ into distinct parts, as well as the first of the famous Rogers-Ramanujan identities. In 2020, Kang and Park constructed an extension of Alder's conjecture which relates to the second Rogers-Ramanujan identity by considering $Δ_d^{(a,b,-)}(n) = q_d^{(a)}(n) - Q_d^{(b,-)}(n)$ where $Q_d^{(b,-)}(n)$ counts the number of partitions into parts $\equiv \pm b \pmod{d + 3}$ excluding the $d+3-b$ part. Kang and Park conjectured that $Δ_d^{(2,2,-)}(n)\geq 0$ for all $d\geq 1$ and $n\geq 0$, and proved this for $d = 2^r - 2$ and $n$ even. We prove Kang and Park's conjecture for all but finitely many $d$. Toward proving the remaining cases, we adapt work of Alfes, Jameson and Lemke Oliver to generate asymptotics for the related functions. Finally, we present a more generalized conjecture for higher $a=b$ and prove it for infinite classes of $n$ and $d$.

We prove an explicit formula to count the partitions of $n$ whose product of the summands is at most $n$. In the process, we also deduce a result to count the multiplicative partitions of $n$.

Bilinear expansions of lattices of KP $τ$-functions in BKP $τ$-functions: a fermionic approach
Published in J. Math. Phys. 62, 013508 (2021) • View PublicationBIB
We derive a bilinear expansion expressing elements of a lattice of KP $τ$-functions, labelled by partitions, as a sum over products of pairs of elements of an associated lattice of BKP $τ$-functions, labelled by strict partitions. This generalizes earlier results relating determinants and Pfaffians of minors of skew symmetric matrices, with applications to Schur functions and Schur $Q$-functions. It is deduced using the representations of KP and BKP $τ$-functions as vacuum expectation values (VEV's) of products of fermionic operators of charged and neutral type, respectively. The lattice is generated by insertion of products of pairs of charged creation and annihilation operators. The result follows from expanding the product as a sum of monomials in the neutral fermionic generators and applying a factorization theorem for VEV's of products of operators in the mutually commuting subalgebras. Applications include the case of inhomogeneous polynomial $τ$-functions of KP and BKP type.

Symmetric polynomials associated with numerical semigroups
We study a new kind of symmetric polynomials P_n(x_1,...,x_m) of degree n in m real variables, which have arisen in the theory of numerical semigroups. We establish their basic properties and find their representation through the power sums E_k=\sum_{j=1}^m x_j^k. We observe a visual similarity between normalized polynomials P_n(x_1,...,x_m)/χ_m, where χ_m=\prod_{j=1}^m x_j, and a polynomial part of a partition function W(s,{d_1,...,d_m}), which gives a number of partitions of s\ge 0 into m positive integers d_j, and put forward a conjecture about their relationship.
Counting the parts divisible by k in all the partitions of n whose parts have multiplicity less than k
Published in INTEGERS 22 (2022), Article A49 • Search Publication
Recent results by Andrews and Merca on the number of even parts in all partitions of n into distinct parts, a(n), were derived via generating functions. This paper extends these results to the number of parts divisible by k in all the partitions of n for which the multiplicity of each part is strictly less than k, ak(n). Moreover, a combinatorial proof is provided using an extension of Glaisher's bijection. Finally, we give the generating functions for this new family of integer sequences and use it to verify generalized pentagonal, triangular, and square power recurrence relations.

Mass partition problems describe the partitions we can induce on a family of measures or finite sets of points in Euclidean spaces by dividing the ambient space into pieces. In this survey we describe recent progress in the area in addition to its connections to topology, discrete geometry, and computer science.

Intermediate symplectic characters and shifted plane partitions of shifted double staircase shape
Published • View PublicationBIB
We use intermediate symplectic characters to give a proof and variations of Hopkins' conjecture, now proved by Hopkins and Lai, on the number of shifted plane partitions of shifted double staircase shape with bounded entries. In fact, we prove some character identities involving intermediate symplectic characters, and find generating functions for such shifted plane partitions. The key ingredients of the proof are a bialternant formula for intermediate symplectic characters, which interpolates between those for Schur functions and symplectic characters, and the Ishikawa-Wakayama minor-summation formula.

A complete multipartite basis for the chromatic symmetric function
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 35, Issue 4, November 2021, 2647-2661 • View PublicationBIB
In the vector space of symmetric functions, the elements of the basis of elementary symmetric functions are (up to a factor) the chromatic symmetric functions of disjoint unions of cliques. We consider their graph complements, the functions $\{r_λ: λ\text{ an integer partition}\}$ defined as chromatic symmetric functions of complete multipartite graphs. This basis was first introduced by Penaguiao [21]. We provide a combinatorial interpretation for the coefficients of the change-of-basis formula between the $r_λ$ and the monomial symmetric functions, and we show that the coefficients of the chromatic and Tutte symmetric functions of a graph $G$ when expanded in the $r$-basis enumerate certain intersections of partitions of $V(G)$ into stable sets.

Cut Bounds for Some Weighted Graphs
In communication field, an important issue is to group users and base stations to as many as possible subnetworks satisfying certain interference constraints. These problems are usually formulated as a graph partition problems which minimize some forms of graph cut. Previous research already gave some results about the cut bounds for unweighted regular graph. In this paper, we prove a result about the lower bound for weighted graphs that have some regular properties and show similar results for more general case.
Hypergraph $k$-cut for fixed $k$ in deterministic polynomial time
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the Hypergraph-$k$-cut problem. The input consists of a hypergraph $G=(V,E)$ with non-negative hyperedge-costs $c: E\rightarrow R_+$ and a positive integer $k$. The objective is to find a least-cost subset $F\subseteq E$ such that the number of connected components in $G-F$ is at least $k$. An alternative formulation of the objective is to find a partition of $V$ into $k$ non-empty sets $V_1,V_2,\ldots,V_k$ so as to minimize the cost of the hyperedges that cross the partition. Graph-$k$-cut, the special case of Hypergraph-$k$-cut obtained by restricting to graph inputs, has received considerable attention. Several different approaches lead to a polynomial-time algorithm for Graph-$k$-cut when $k$ is fixed, starting with the work of Goldschmidt and Hochbaum (1988). In contrast, it is only recently that a randomized polynomial time algorithm for Hypergraph-$k$-cut was developed (Chandrasekaran, Xu, Yu, 2018) via a subtle generalization of Karger's random contraction approach for graphs. In this work, we develop the first deterministic polynomial time algorithm for Hypergraph-$k$-cut for all fixed $k$. We describe two algorithms both of which are based on a divide and conquer approach. The first algorithm is simpler and runs in $n^{O(k^2)}$ time while the second one runs in $n^{O(k)}$ time. Our proof relies on new structural results that allow for efficient recovery of the parts of an optimum $k$-partition by solving minimum $(S,T)$-terminal cuts. Our techniques give new insights even for Graph-$k$-cut.
Dyson's Crank and the Mex of Integer Partitions
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 185 (2022) 105523 • View PublicationBIB
Andrews and Newman have recently introduced the notion of the mex of a partition, the smallest positive integer that is not a part. The concept has been used since at least 2011, though, with connections to Frobenius symbols. Recently the parity of the mex has been associated to the crank statistic named by Dyson in 1944. In this note, we extend and strengthen the connection between the crank and mex (along with a new generaliztion of the mex) by proving a number of properties that naturally relate these partition statistics.
An analogue of $k$-marked Durfee symbols for strongly unimodal sequences
In a seminal 2007 paper, Andrews introduced a class of combinatorial objects that generalize partitions called $k$-marked Durfee symbols. Multivariate rank generating functions for these objects have been shown by many to have interesting modularity properties at certain vectors of roots of unity. Motivated by recent studies of rank generating functions for strongly unimodal sequences, we apply methods of Andrews to define an analogous class of combinatorial objects called $k$-marked strongly unimodal symbols that generalize strongly unimodal sequences. We establish a multivariate rank generating function for these objects, which we study combinatorially. We conclude by discussing potential quantum modularity properties for this rank generating function at certain vectors of roots of unity.

Newell-Littlewood numbers II: extended Horn inequalities
Published in Algebr. Comb. 5 (2022), no. 6, 1287-1297 • View PublicationBIB
The Newell-Littlewood numbers $N_{μ,ν,λ}$ are tensor product multiplicities of Weyl modules for classical Lie groups, in the stable limit. For which triples of partitions $(μ,ν,λ)$ does $N_{μ,ν,λ}>0$ hold? The Littlewood-Richardson coefficient case is solved by the Horn inequalities (in work of A. Klyachko and A. Knutson-T. Tao). We extend these celebrated linear inequalities to a much larger family, suggesting a general solution.

Distinguishing actions of symmetric groups and related graphs
The distinguishing number $D(G,X)$ of an action of a group $G$ on a set $X$ is the least size of a partition of $X$ such that no element of $G$ acting nontrivially on $X$ preserves this partition. In this paper we describe the distinguishing numbers for all actions of the symmetric group $S_n$, for any $n\geq 3$. This allows us to describe the distinguishing numbers for all graphs whose automorphism group is isomorphic with a symmetric group. Our description solves a few open problems posed by various authors in earlier papers on this topic.

Recently, S.~Kanti Patra and Md.~Moid Shaik proved the existence of monochromatic solutions to systems of polynomial equations near zero for particular dense subsemigroups $S$ of $((0,\infty),+)$. We extend their results to a much larger class of systems whilst weakening the requests on $S$, using solely basic results about ultrafilters.

Group-theoretical graph categories
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics Vol. 55, pp. 591-627 (2022) • View PublicationBIB
The semidirect product of a finitely generated group dual with the symmetric group can be described through so-called group-theoretical categories of partitions (covers only a special case; due to Raum--Weber, 2015) and skew categories of partitions (more general; due to Maassen, 2018). We generalize these results to the case of graph categories, which allows to replace the symmetric group by the group of automorphisms of some graph.
Cuspidal ribbon tableaux in affine type A

For any convex preorder on the set of positive roots of affine type A, we classify and construct all associated cuspidal and semicuspidal skew shapes. These combinatorial objects correspond to cuspidal and semicuspidal skew Specht modules for the Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier algebra of affine type A. Cuspidal skew shapes are ribbons, and we show that every skew shape has a unique ordered tiling by cuspidal ribbons. This tiling data provides an upper bound, in the bilexicographic order on Kostant partitions, for labels of simple factors of Specht modules.

Abacus-histories and the combinatorics of creation operators
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, Volume 177, January 2021 • View PublicationBIB
Creation operators act on symmetric functions to build Schur functions, Hall--Littlewood polynomials, and related symmetric functions one row at a time. Haglund, Morse, Zabrocki, and others have studied more general symmetric functions $H_α$, $C_α$, and $B_α$ obtained by applying any sequence of creation operators to $1$. We develop new combinatorial models for the Schur expansions of these and related symmetric functions using objects called abacus-histories. These formulas arise by chaining together smaller abacus-histories that encode the effect of an individual creation operator on a given Schur function. We give a similar treatment for operators such as multiplication by $h_m$, $h_m^{\perp}$, $ω$, etc., which serve as building blocks to construct the creation operators. We use involutions on abacus-histories to give bijective proofs of properties of the Bernstein creation operator and Hall-Littlewood polynomials indexed by three-row partitions.
