Ramanujan Congruences for Fractional Partition Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
For rational $α$, the fractional partition functions $p_α(n)$ are given by the coefficients of the generating function $(q;q)^α_\infty$. When $α=-1$, one obtains the usual partition function. Congruences of the form $p(\ell n + c)\equiv 0 \pmod{\ell}$ for a prime $\ell$ and integer $c$ were studied by Ramanujan. Such congruences exist only for $\ell\in\{5,7,11\}.$ Chan and Wang [4] recently studied congruences for the fractional partition functions and gave several infinite families of congruences using identities of the Dedekind eta-function. Following their work, we use the theory of non-ordinary primes to find a general framework that characterizes congruences modulo any integer. This allows us to prove new congruences such as $p_\frac{57}{61}(17^2n-3)\equiv 0 \pmod{17^2}$.
On Rado conditions for nonlinear Diophantine equations
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 94, May 2021, #103277 • View PublicationBIB
Building on previous work of Di Nasso and Luperi Baglini, we provide general necessary conditions for a Diophantine equation to be partition regular. These conditions are inspired by Rado's characterization of partition regular linear homogeneous equations. We conjecture that these conditions are also sufficient for partition regularity, at least for equations whose corresponding monovariate polynomial is linear. This would provide a natural generalization of Rado's theorem. We verify that such a conjecture hold for the equations $x^{2}-xy+ax+by+cz=0$ and $x^{2}-y^{2}+ax+by+cz=0$ for $a,b,c\in \mathbb{Z}$ such that $abc=0$ or $% a+b+c=0$. To deal with these equations, we establish new results concerning the partition regularity of polynomial configurations in $\mathbb{Z}$ such as $\left\{ x,x+y,xy+x+y\right\} $, building on the recent result on the partition regularity of $\left\{ x,x+y,xy\right\} $.

Cover and variable degeneracy

Let $f$ be a nonnegative integer valued function on the vertex set of a graph. A graph is \textbf{strictly $f$-degenerate} if each nonempty subgraph $Γ$ has a vertex $v$ such that $\mathrm{deg}_Γ(v) < f(v)$. In this paper, we define a new concept, strictly $f$-degenerate transversal, which generalizes list coloring, signed coloring, DP-coloring, $L$-forested-coloring, and $(f_{1}, f_{2}, \dots, f_{s})$-partition. A \textbf{cover} of a graph $G$ is a graph $H$ with vertex set $V(H) = \bigcup_{v \in V(G)} X_{v}$, where $X_{v} = \{(v, 1), (v, 2), \dots, (v, s)\}$; the edge set $\mathscr{M} = \bigcup_{uv \in E(G)}\mathscr{M}_{uv}$, where $\mathscr{M}_{uv}$ is a matching between $X_{u}$ and $X_{v}$. A vertex set $R \subseteq V(H)$ is a \textbf{transversal} of $H$ if $|R \cap X_{v}| = 1$ for each $v \in V(G)$. A transversal $R$ is a \textbf{strictly $f$-degenerate transversal} if $H[R]$ is strictly $f$-degenerate. The main result of this paper is a degree type result, which generalizes Brooks' theorem, Gallai's theorem, degree-choosable result, signed degree-colorable result, and DP-degree-colorable result. We also give some structural results on critical graphs with respect to strictly $f$-degenerate transversal. Using these results, we can uniformly prove many new and known results. In the final section, we pose some open problems.

The Algebra of Schur Operators
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study a representation of the (local) plactic monoid given by Schur operators $u_i$, which act on partitions by adding a box in column $i$ (if possible). In particular, we give a complete list of the relations that hold in the algebra of Schur operators.

Homogeneous Dual Ramsey Theorem
For positive integers $k < n$ such that $k$ divides $n$, let $(n)^k_{\hom}$ be the set of homogeneous $k$-partitions of $\{1, \dots, n\}$, that is, the set of partitions of $\{1, \dots, n\}$ into $k$ classes of the same cardinality. In the article "Ramsey properties of infinite measure algebras and topological dynamics of the group of measure preserving automorphisms: some results and an open problem" by Kechris, Sokic, and Todorcevic, the following question was asked: Is it true that given positive integers $k < m$ and $N$ such that $k$ divides $m$, there exists a number $n>m$ such that $m$ divides $n$, satisfying that for every coloring $(n)^k_{\hom}=C_1\cup\dots\cup C_N$ we can choose $u\in (n)^m_{\hom}$ such that $\{t\in (n)^k_{\hom}: t\mbox{ is coarser than } u\}\subseteq C_i$ for some $i$? In this note we give a positive answer to that question. This result turns out to be a homogeneous version of the finite Dual Ramsey Theorem of Graham-Rothschild. As explained by Kechris, Sokic, and Todorcevic in their article, our result also proves that the class $\mathcal{OMBA}_{\mathbb Q_2}$ of naturally ordered finite measure algebras with measure taking values in the dyadic rationals has the Ramsey property.

Exact Formulae for the Fractional Partition Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The partition function $p(n)$ has been a testing ground for applications of analytic number theory to combinatorics. In particular, Hardy and Ramanujan invented the "circle method" to estimate the size of $p(n)$, which was later perfected by Rademacher who obtained an exact formula. Recently, Chan and Wang considered the fractional partition functions, defined by $\sum_{n = 0}^\infty p_α(n)x^n := \prod_{k=1}^\infty (1-x^k)^{-α}$. In this paper we use the Rademacher circle method to find an exact formula for $p_α(n)$ and study its implications, including log-concavity and the higher-order generalizations (i.e., the Turán inequalities) that $p_α(n)$ satisfies.
Operads of (noncrossing) partitions, interacting bialgebras, and moment-cumulant relations
Published in Advances in Mathematics 369, 2020, 107170 • View PublicationBIB
We establish and explore a relationship between two approaches to moment-cumulant relations in free probability theory: on one side the main approach, due to Speicher, given in terms of Möbius inversion on the lattice of noncrossing partitions, and on the other side the more recent non-commutative shuffle-algebra approach, where the moment-cumulant relations take the form of certain exponential-logarithm relations. We achieve this by exhibiting two operad structures on (noncrossing) partitions, different in nature: one is an ordinary, non-symmetric operad whose composition law is given by insertion into gaps between elements, the other is a coloured, symmetric operad with composition law expressing refinement of blocks. We show that these operad structures interact so as to make the corresponding incidence bialgebra of the former a comodule bialgebra for the latter. Furthermore, this interaction is compatible with the shuffle structure and thus unveils how the two approaches are intertwined. Moreover, the constructions and results are general enough to extend to ordinary set partitions.

Limit theorems for statistics of non-crossing partitions
We study the distribution of several statistics of large non-crossing partitions. First, we prove the Gaussian limit theorem for the number of blocks of a given fixed size. In contrast to the properties of usual set partitions, we show that the number of blocks of different sizes are negatively correlated, even for large partitions. In addition, we show that the sizes of blocks in a given large non-crossing partition are distributed according to a geometric distribution and not Poisson, as in the case of usual set partitions. Next, we show that the size of the largest block concentrates at $\log_2 n$, and that after an appropriate rescaling, it can be described by the double exponential distribution. Finally, we show that the width of a large non-crossing partition converges to the Theta-distribution which arises in the theory of Brownian excursions.

The valley version of the Extended Delta Conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Shuffle Theorem of Carlsson and Mellit gives a combinatorial expression for the bigraded Frobenius characteristic of the ring of diagonal harmonics, and the Delta Conjecture of Haglund, Remmel and the second author provides two generalizations of the Shuffle Theorem to the delta operator expression $Δ'_{e_k} e_n$. Haglund et al. also propose the Extended Delta Conjecture for the delta operator expression $Δ'_{e_k} Δ_{h_r}e_n$, which is analogous to the rise version of the Delta Conjecture. Recently, D'Adderio, Iraci and Wyngaerd proved the rise version of the Extended Delta Conjecture at the case when $t=0$. In this paper, we propose a new valley version of the Extended Delta Conjecture. Then, we work on the combinatorics of extended ordered multiset partitions to prove that the two conjectures for $Δ'_{e_k} Δ_{h_r}e_n$ are equivalent when $t$ or $q$ equals 0, thus proving the valley version of the Extended Delta Conjecture when $t$ or $q$ equals 0.

Algorithms for weighted independent transversals and strong colouring
Published in ACM Transactions on Algorithms 18(1), Article #1 (2021) • View PublicationBIB
An independent transversal (IT) in a graph with a given vertex partition is an independent set consisting of one vertex in each partition class. Several sufficient conditions are known for the existence of an IT in a given graph with a given vertex partition, which have been used over the years to solve many combinatorial problems. Some of these IT existence theorems have algorithmic proofs, but there remains a gap between the best bounds given by nonconstructive results, and those obtainable by efficient algorithms. Recently, Graf and Haxell (2018) described a new (deterministic) algorithm that asymptotically closes this gap, but there are limitations on its applicability. In this paper we develop a randomized version of this algorithm that is much more widely applicable, and demonstrate its use by giving efficient algorithms for two problems concerning the strong chromatic number of graphs.
Weighted $\mathsf{P}-$partitions enumerator

To an extended permutohedron we associate the weighted integer points enumerator, whose principal specialization is the $f$-polynomial. In the case of poset cones it refines Gessel's $\mathsf{P}$-partitions enumerator. We show that this enumerator is a quasisymmetric function obtained by universal morphism from the Hopf algebra of posets.

The $τ$-function of the Ablowitz-Segur family of solutions to Painlevé II as a Widom constant
Published • View PublicationBIB
$τ$-functions of certain Painlevé equations (PVI,PV,PIII) can be expressed as a Fredholm determinant. Further, the minor expansion of these determinants provide an interesting connection to Random partitions. This paper is a step towards understanding whether the $τ$-function of Painlevé II has a Fredholm determinant representation. The Ablowitz-Segur family of solutions are special one parameter solutions of Painlevé II and the corresponding $τ$-function is known to be the Fredholm determinant of the Airy Kernel. We develop a formalism for open contour in parallel to the one formulated in \cite{CGL} in terms of the Widom constant and verify that the Widom constant for Ablowitz-Segur family of solutions is indeed the determinant of the Airy Kernel. Finally, we construct a suitable basis and obtain the minor expansion of the Ablowitz-Segur $τ$-function.

Factorization problems in complex reflection groups
Published in Canadian Journal of Mathematics 73 (2021), no. 4, 899--946 • View PublicationBIB
We enumerate factorizations of a Coxeter element in a well generated complex reflection group into arbitrary factors, keeping track of the fixed space dimension of each factor. In the infinite families of generalized permutations, our approach is fully combinatorial. It gives results analogous to those of Jackson in the symmetric group and can be refined to encode a notion of cycle type. As one application of our results, we give a previously overlooked characterization of the poset of $W$-noncrossing partitions.
On nested and 2-nested graphs: two subclasses of graphs between threshold and split graphs
Published in Matemática Contemporânea, Vol. 46 (2019) 119-128 • View PublicationBIB
A $(0,1)$-matrix has the Consecutive Ones Property (C1P) for the rows if there is a permutation of its columns such that the ones in each row appear consecutively. We say a $(0, 1)$-matrix is nested if it has the consecutive ones property for the rows (C1P) and every two rows are either disjoint or nested. We say a $(0, 1)$-matrix is 2-nested if it has the C1P and admits a partition of its rows into two sets such that the submatrix induced by each of these sets is nested. We say a split graph $G$ with split partition $(K, S)$ is nested (resp.\ 2-nested) if the matrix $A(S, K)$ which indicates the adjacency between vertices in $S$ and $K$ is nested (resp.\ 2-nested). In this work, we characterize nested and 2-nested matrices by minimal forbidden submatrices. This characterization leads to a minimal forbidden induced subgraph characterization for these classes of graphs, which are a superclass of threshold graphs and a subclass of split and circle graphs.

On a new formula for the number of unrestricted partitions

In this paper we present a new formula for the number of unrestricted partitions of $n$. We do this by introducing a correspondence between the number of unrestrited partitions of $n$ and the number of non-negative solutions of systems of two equations, involving natural numbers in the interval (1 $,n^{2}$).

The main result of the note describes certain optimal-score partitions, which can be interpreted as optimal resource allocations. This result is based on the fact that any nonnegative square matrix whose column sums are the same as the corresponding row sums can be represented as the sum of circuit matrices.

Algebraic properties of perfect structures
Published • View PublicationBIB
A perfect structure is a triple $(M,P,S)$ of matrices $M, P$ and $S$ of consistent sizes such that $MP = PS$. Perfect structures comprise similar matrices, eigenvectors, perfect colorings (equitable partitions) and graph coverings. In this paper we study general algebraic properties of perfect structures and characterize all perfect structures with identity or unity matrix $M$. Next, we consider a graph product generalizing most standard products (e.g. Cartesian, tensor, normal, lexicographic graph products). For this product we propose a construction of perfect structures and prove that it can be reversed for eigenvectors. Finally, we apply obtained results to calculate the spectra of several classes of graphs and to prove some properties of perfect colorings.

Linear independences of maps associated to partitions
Given a suitable collection of partitions of sets, there exists a connection to easy quantum groups via intertwiner maps. A sufficient condition for this correspondence to be one-to-one are particular linear independences on the level of those maps. In the case of non-crossing partitions, a proof of this linear independence can be traced back to a matrix determinant formula, developed by W. Tutte. We present a revised and adapted version of Tutte's work and the link to the problem above, believing that this self-contained article will assist others in the field of easy quantum groups. In particular, we fixed some errors in the original work and adapted notations, definitions, statements and proofs.

Random strict partitions and random shifted tableaux
Published in Sel. Math. New Ser. 26, 10 (2020) • View PublicationBIB
We study asymptotics of random shifted Young diagrams which correspond to a given sequence of reducible projective representations of the symmetric groups. We show limit results (Law of Large Numbers and Central Limit Theorem) for their shapes, provided that the representation character ratios and their cumulants converge to zero at some prescribed speed. Our class of examples includes uniformly random shifted standard tableaux with prescribed shape as well as shifted tableaux generated by some natural combinatorial algorithms (such as shifted Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence) applied to a random input.
