On bin packing with clustering and bin packing with delays
Published • View PublicationBIB
We continue the study of two recently introduced bin packing type problems, called bin packing with clustering, and online bin packing with delays. A bin packing input consists of items of sizes not larger than 1, and the goal is to partition or pack them into bins, where the total size of items of every valid bin cannot exceed 1. In bin packing with clustering, items also have colors associated with them. A globally optimal solution can combine items of different colors in bins, while a clustered solution can only pack monochromatic bins. The goal is to compare a globally optimal solution to an optimal clustered solution, under certain constraints on the coloring provided with the input. We show close bounds on the worst-case ratio between these two costs, called "the price of clustering", improving and simplifying previous results. Specifically, we show that the price of clustering does not exceed 1.93667, improving over the previous upper bound of 1.951, and that it is at least 1.93558, improving over the previous lower bound of 1.93344. In online bin packing with delays, items are presented over time. Items may wait to be packed, and an algorithm can create a new bin at any time, packing a subset of already existing unpacked items into it, under the condition that the bin is valid. A created bin cannot be used again in the future, and all items have to be packed into bins eventually. The objective is to minimize the number of used bins plus the sum of waiting costs of all items, called delays. We build on previous work and modify a simple phase-based algorithm. We combine the modification with a careful analysis to improve the previously known competitive ratio from 3.951 to below 3.1551.

Combinatorial Proof of the Minimal Excludant Theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
The minimal excludant of a partition $λ$, $\rm{mex}(λ)$, is the smallest positive integer that is not a part of $λ$. For a positive integer $n$, $ σ\, \rm{mex}(n)$ denotes the sum of the minimal excludants of all partitions of $n$. Recently, Andrews and Newman obtained a new combinatorial interpretations for $σ\, \rm{mex}(n)$. They showed, using generating functions, that $σ\, \rm{mex}(n)$ equals the number of partitions of $n$ into distinct parts using two colors. In this paper, we provide a purely combinatorial proof of this result and new properties of the function $σ\, \rm{mex}(n)$. We generalize this combinatorial interpretation to $σ_r\, \rm{mex}(n)$, the sum of least $r$-gaps in all partitions of $n$. The least $r$-gap of a partition $λ$ is the smallest positive integer that does not appear at least $r$ times as a part of $λ$.

Invariant synchrony subspaces of sets of matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
A synchrony subspace of R^n is defined by setting certain components of the vectors equal according to an equivalence relation. Synchrony subspaces invariant under a given set of square matrices form a lattice. Applications of these invariant synchrony subspaces include equitable and almost equitable partitions of the vertices of a graph used in many areas of graph theory, balanced and exo-balanced partitions of coupled cell networks, and coset partitions of Cayley graphs. We study the basic properties of invariant synchrony subspaces and provide many examples of the applications. We also present what we call the split and cir algorithm for finding the lattice of invariant synchrony subspaces. Our theory and algorithm is further generalized for non-square matrices. This leads to the notion of tactical decompositions studied for its application in design theory.

Equitable partition of graphs into induced linear forests
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is proved that the vertex set of any simple graph $G$ can be equitably partitioned into $k$ subsets for any integer $k\geq\max\{\big\lceil\frac{Δ(G)+1}{2}\big\rceil,\big\lceil\frac{|G|}{4}\big\rceil\}$ so that each of them induces a linear forest.

Local convergence of random planar graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The present work describes the asymptotic local shape of a graph drawn uniformly at random from all connected simple planar graphs with n labelled vertices. We establish a novel uniform infinite planar graph (UIPG) as quenched limit in the local topology as n tends to infinity. We also establish such limits for random 2-connected planar graphs and maps as their number of edges tends to infinity. Our approach encompasses a new probabilistic view on the Tutte decomposition. This allows us to follow the path along the decomposition of connectivity from planar maps to planar graphs in a uniformed way, basing each step on condensation phenomena for random walks under subexponentiality and Gibbs partitions. Using large deviation results, we recover the asymptotic formula by Giménez and Noy (2009) for the number of planar graphs.
Graph Hierarchy: A novel approach to understanding hierarchical structures in complex networks
Published • View PublicationBIB
Trophic coherence, a measure of a graph's hierarchical organisation, has been shown to be linked to a graph's structural and dynamical aspects such as cyclicity, stability and normality. Trophic levels of vertices can reveal their functional properties and partition and rank the vertices accordingly. Yet trophic levels and hence trophic coherence can only be defined on graphs with basal vertices, vertices with zero in-degree. Consequently, trophic analysis of graphs had been restricted until now. In this paper we introduce a novel framework, a generalisation of trophic levels, which we call hierarchical levels, that can be defined on any simple graph. Within this general framework, we develop additional metrics named influence centrality, a measure of a vertices ability to influence dynamics, and democracy coefficient, a measure of overall feedback in the system, both of which have implications for the controllability of complex systems. We discuss how our generalisation relates to previous attempts and what new insights are illuminated on the topological and dynamical aspects of graphs. Finally, we show how the hierarchical structure of a network relates to the incidence rate in a SIS epidemic model.

Counting pattern-avoiding integer partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
A partition $α$ is said to contain another partition (or pattern) $μ$ if the Ferrers board for $μ$ is attainable from $α$ under removal of rows and columns. We say $α$ avoids $μ$ if it does not contain $μ$. In this paper we count the number of partitions of $n$ avoiding a fixed pattern $μ$, in terms of generating functions and their asymptotic growth rates. We find that the generating function for this count is rational whenever $μ$ is (rook equivalent to) a partition in which any two part sizes differ by at least two. In doing so, we find a surprising connection to metacyclic $p$-groups. We further obtain asymptotics for the number of partitions of $n$ avoiding a pattern $μ$. Using these asymptotics we conclude that the generating function for $μ$ is not algebraic whenever $μ$ is rook equivalent to a partition with distinct parts whose first two parts are positive and differ by 1.

The Normalized Matching Property in Random and Pseudorandom Bipartite Graphs
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 28, Issue 2, Article P2.48 (2021) • View PublicationBIB
A simple generalization of the Hall's condition in bipartite graphs, the Normalized Matching Property (NMP) in a graph $G(X,Y,E)$ with vertex partition $(X,Y)$ states that for any subset $S\subseteq X$, we have $\frac{|N(S)|}{|Y|}\ge\frac{|S|}{|X|}$. In this paper, we show the following results about having the Normalized Matching Property in random and pseudorandom graphs. 1. We establish $p=\frac{\log n}{k}$ as a sharp threshold for having NMP in $\mathbb{G}(k,n,p)$, which is the graph with $|X|=k,|Y|=n$ (assuming $k\le n\leq \exp(o(k))$), and in which each pair $(x,y)\in X\times Y$ is an edge independently with probability $p$. This generalizes a classic result of Erdős-Rényi on the $\frac{\log n}{n}$ threshold for having a perfect matching in $\mathbb{G}(n,n,p)$. 2. We also show that a pseudorandom bipartite graph - upon deletion of a vanishingly small fraction of vertices - admits NMP, provided it is not too sparse. More precisely, a bipartite graph $G(X,Y)$, with $k=|X|\le |Y|=n$, is said to be Thomason pseudorandom (following A. Thomason (Discrete Math., 1989)) with parameters $(p,\varepsilon)$ if each $x\in X$ has degree at least $pn$ and each pair of distinct $x, x'\in X$ has at most $(1+\varepsilon)p^2n$ common neighbors. We show that for any large enough $(p,\varepsilon)$-Thomason pseudorandom graph $G(X,Y)$, there are "tiny" subsets $\mathrm{Del}_X\subset X, \ \mathrm{Del}_Y\subset Y$ such that the subgraph $G(X\setminus \mathrm{Del}_X,Y\setminus \mathrm{Del}_Y)$ has NMP, provided $p \gg\tfrac{1}{k}$. En route, we prove an "almost" vertex decomposition theorem: Every such Thomason pseudorandom graph admits - excluding a negligible portion of its vertex set - a partition of its vertex set into graphs that we call Euclidean trees. These are trees that have NMP, and which arise organically through the Euclidean GCD algorithm.

Affine flag graphs and classification of a family of symmetric graphs with complete quotients
Published in Discrete Math. 342 (2019) 1792-1798 • View PublicationBIB
A graph $Γ$ is $G$-symmetric if $G$ is a group of automorphisms of $Γ$ which is transitive on the set of ordered pairs of adjacent vertices of $Γ$. If $V(Γ)$ admits a nontrivial $G$-invariant partition ${\cal B}$ such that for blocks $B, C \in {\cal B}$ adjacent in the quotient graph $Γ_{\cal B}$ of $Γ$ relative to ${\cal B}$, exactly one vertex of $B$ has no neighbour in $C$, then $Γ$ is called an almost multicover of $Γ_{\cal B}$. In this case an incidence structure with point set ${\cal B}$ arises naturally, and it is a $(G, 2)$-point-transitive and $G$-block-transitive 2-design if in addition $Γ_{\cal B}$ is a complete graph. In this paper we classify all $G$-symmetric graphs $Γ$ such that (i) ${\cal B}$ has block size $|B| \ge 3$; (ii) $Γ_{\cal B}$ is complete and almost multi-covered by $Γ$; (iii) the incidence structure involved is a linear space; and (iv) $G$ contains a regular normal subgroup which is elementary abelian. This classification together with earlier results in [A. Gardiner and C. E. Praeger, Australas. J. Combin. 71 (2018) 403--426], [M.~Giulietti et al., J. Algebraic Combin. 38 (2013) 745--765] and [T. Fang et al., Electronic J. Combin. 23 (2) (2016) P2.27] completes the classification of symmetric graphs satisfying (i) and (ii).
Height of records in partitions of a set
We study the restricted growth function associated with set partitions, and obtain exact formulas for the number of strong records with height one, the total of record heights over set of partitions, and the number of partitions with a given maximal height of strong records. We also extend some of these results to weak records.
Combinatorics of periodic ellipsoidal billiards
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study combinatorics of billiard partitions which arose recently in the description of periodic trajectories of ellipsoidal billiards in d-dimensional Euclidean and pseudo-Euclidean spaces. Such partitions uniquely codify the sets of caustics, up to their types, which generate periodic trajectories. The period of a periodic trajectory is the largest part while the winding numbers are the remaining summands of the corresponding partition. In order to take into account the types of caustics as well, we introduce weighted partitions. We provide closed forms for the generating functions of these partitions.
Generalized DP-Colorings of Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
By a graph we mean a finite undirected graph having multiple edges but no loops. Given a graph property $\mathcal{P}$, a $\mathcal{P}$-coloring of a graph $G$ with color set $C$ is a mapping $\f:V(G)\to C$ such that for each color $c\in C$ the subgraph of $G$ induced by the color class $\varphi^{-1}(c)$ belongs to $\mathcal{P}$. The $\mathcal{P}$-chromatic number $χ(G:\mathcal{P})$ of $G$ is the least number $k$ for which $G$ admits an $\mathcal{P}$-coloring with a set of $k$-colors. This coloring concept dates back to the late 1960s and is commonly known as generalized coloring. In the 1980s the $\mathcal{P}$-choice number $χ_\ell(G:\mathcal{P})$ of $G$ was introduced and investigated by several authors. In 2018 Ďvorák and Postle introduced the DP-chromatic number as a natural extension of the choice number. They also remarked that this concept applies to any graph property. This motivated us to investigate the $\mathcal{P}$-DP-chromatic number $χ_{\rm DP}(G:\mathcal{P})$ of $G$. We have $χ(G:\mathcal{P})\leq χ_\ell(G:\mathcal{P})\leq χ_{\rm DP}(G:\mathcal{P})$. In this paper we show that various fundamental coloring results, in particular, the theorems of Brooks, of Gallai, and of Erdős, Rubin and Taylor, have counterparts for the $\mathcal{P}$-DP-chromatic number. Furthermore, we provide a generalization of a result from 2000 about partition of graphs into a fixed number of induced subgraphs with bounded variable degeneracy due to Borodin, Kostochka, and Toft.

Cyclic sieving, skew Macdonald polynomials and Schur positivity
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 3 (2020) no. 4, pp. 913-939 • View PublicationBIB
When $λ$ is a partition, the specialized non-symmetric Macdonald polynomial $E_λ(x;q;0)$ is symmetric and related to a modified Hall--Littlewood polynomial. We show that whenever all parts of the integer partition $λ$ is a multiple of $n$, the underlying set of fillings exhibit the cyclic sieving phenomenon (CSP) under a cyclic shift of the columns. The corresponding CSP polynomial is given by $E_λ(x;q;0)$. In addition, we prove a refined cyclic sieving phenomenon where the content of the fillings is fixed. This refinement is closely related to an earlier result by B.~Rhoades. We also introduce a skew version of $E_λ(x;q;0)$. We show that these are symmetric and Schur-positive via a variant of the Robinson--Schenstedt--Knuth correspondence and we also describe crystal raising- and lowering operators for the underlying fillings. Moreover, we show that the skew specialized non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials are in some cases vertical-strip LLT polynomials. As a consequence, we get a combinatorial Schur expansion of a new family of LLT polynomials.

Counting Coxeter's friezes over a finite field via moduli spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
We count the number of Coxeter's friezes over a finite field. Our method uses geometric realizations of the spaces of friezes in a certain completion of the classical moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{0,n}$ allowing repeated points in the configurations. Counting points in the completed moduli space over a finite field is related to the enumeration problem of counting partitions of cyclically ordered set of points into subsets containing no consecutive points. In Appendix we provide an elementary solution for this enumeration problem.

Analysis and combinatorics of partition zeta functions
Published in International Journal of Number Theory, Vol. 17, No. 3 (2021) 805--814 • View PublicationBIB
We examine "partition zeta functions" analogous to the Riemann zeta function but summed over subsets of integer partitions. We prove an explicit formula for a family of partition zeta functions already shown to have nice properties -- those summed over partitions of fixed length -- which yields complete information about analytic continuation, poles and trivial roots of the zeta functions in the family. Then we present a combinatorial proof of the explicit formula, which shows it to be a zeta function analog of MacMahon's partial fraction decomposition of the generating function for partitions of fixed length.
Generating functions for vector partition functions and a basic recurrence relation

We define a generalized vector partition function and derive an identity for generating series of such functions associated with solutions of basic recurrence relation of combinatorial analysis. As a consequence, we obtain the generating function of the number of generalized lattice paths and a new version of Chaundy-Bullard identity for the vector partition function.

Non-Hyperoctahedral Categories of Two-Colored Partitions, Part I: New Categories
Published • View PublicationBIB
Compact quantum groups can be studied by investigating their co-representation categories in analogy to the Schur-Weyl/Tannaka-Krein approach. For the special class of (unitary) "easy" quantum groups these categories arise from a combinatorial structure: Rows of two-colored points form the objects, partitions of two such rows the morphisms; vertical/horizontal concatenation and reflection give composition, monoidal product and involution. Of the four possible classes $\mathcal{O}$, $\mathcal{B}$, $\mathcal{S}$ and $\mathcal{H}$ of such categories (inspired respectively by the classical orthogonal, bistochastic, symmetric and hyperoctahedral groups) we treat the first three -- the non-hyperoctahedral ones. We introduce many new examples of such categories. They are defined in terms of subtle combinations of block size, coloring and non-crossing conditions. This article is part of an effort to classify all non-hyperoctahedral categories of two-colored partitions. The article is purely combinatorial in nature; The quantum group aspects are left out.

Edge-partitioning 3-edge-connected graphs into paths
We show that for every l, there exists d_l such that every 3-edge-connected graph with minimum degree d_l can be edge-partitioned into paths of length l (provided that its number of edges is divisible by l). This improves a result asserting that 24-edge-connectivity and high minimum degree provides such a partition. This is best possible as 3-edge-connectivity cannot be replaced by 2-edge connectivity.

Partition of a Subset into Two Directed Cycles with Partial Degrees
Let $D=(V,A)$ be a directed graph of order $n\geq 6$. Let $W$ be a subset of $V$ with $|W|\geq 6$. Suppose that every vertex of $W$ has degree at least $(3n-3)/2$ in $D$. Then for any integer partition $|W|=n_1+n_2$ with $n_1\geq 3$ and $n_2\geq 3$, $D$ contains two disjoint directed cycles $C_1$ and $C_2$ such that $|V(C_1)\cap W|=n_1$ and $|V(C_2)\cap W|=n_2$. We conjecture that for any integer partition $|W|=n_1+n_2+\cdots +n_k$ with $k\geq 3$ and $n_i\geq 3(1\leq i\leq k)$, $D$ contains $k$ disjoint directed cycles $C_1,C_2,\ldots , C_k$ such that $|V(C_i)\cap W|=n_i$ for all $1\leq i\leq k$. The degree condition is sharp in general.

Proof of the $K(π,1)$ conjecture for affine Artin groups
Published in Inventiones mathematicae (2020) • View PublicationBIB
We prove the $K(π,1)$ conjecture for affine Artin groups: the complexified complement of an affine reflection arrangement is a classifying space. This is a long-standing problem, due to Arnol'd, Pham, and Thom. Our proof is based on recent advancements in the theory of dual Coxeter and Artin groups, as well as on several new results and constructions. In particular: we show that all affine noncrossing partition posets are EL-shellable; we use these posets to construct finite classifying spaces for dual affine Artin groups; we introduce new CW models for the orbit configuration spaces associated with arbitrary Coxeter groups; we construct finite classifying spaces for the braided crystallographic groups introduced by McCammond and Sulway.
