Minimum degree condition for a graph to be knitted
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a positive integer $k$, a graph is $k$-knitted if for each $k$-subset $S$ of vertices, and every partition of $S$ into disjoint parts $S_1, \ldots, S_t$ for some $t\ge 1$, one can find disjoint connected subgraphs $C_1, \ldots, C_t$ such that $C_i$ contains $S_i$ for each $i$. In this article, we show that if the minimum degree of an $n$-vertex graph $G$ is at least $n/2+k/2-1$ when $n\ge 2k+3$, then $G$ is $k$-knitted. The minimum degree is sharp. As a corollary, we obtain that $k$-contraction-critical graphs are $\left\lceil\frac{k}{8}\right\rceil$-connected.

Equitable Partitions into Matchings and Coverings in Mixed Graphs
Matchings and coverings are central topics in graph theory. The close relationship between these two has been key to many fundamental algorithmic and polyhedral results. For mixed graphs, the notion of matching forest was proposed as a common generalization of matchings and branchings. In this paper, we propose the notion of mixed edge cover as a covering counterpart of matching forest, and extend the matching--covering framework to mixed graphs. While algorithmic and polyhedral results extend fairly easily, partition problems are considerably more difficult in the mixed case. We address the problems of partitioning a mixed graph into matching forests or mixed edge covers, so that all parts are equal with respect to some criterion, such as edge/arc numbers or total sizes. Moreover, we provide the best possible multicriteria equalization.

On the maximal multiplicity of block sizes in a random set partition
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the asymptotic behavior of the maximal multiplicity $M_n=M_n(σ)$ of the blocks in a set partition of $[n]=\{1,2,...,n\}$, assuming that $σ$ is chosen uniformly at random from the set of all such partitions. Let $W=W(n)$ be the unique positive root of the equation $We^W=n$ and let $f_n$ be the fractional part of $W(n)$. Furthermore, let $R_n=W^{\lfloor W\rfloor}/\lfloor W\rfloor !$ and let $\vartheta_n=\min{\{f_n,1-f_n\}}$. We show that, over a subsequence $\{n_k\}_{k\ge 1}$, $(M_{n_k}-R_{n_k})/\sqrt{R_{n_k}}$ converges weakly, as $k\to\infty$, to $\max{\{Z_1,Z_2-u\}}$, where $Z_1$ and $Z_2$ are two independent copies of a standard normal random variable and either $u=\left(\frac{1}{2π}\right)^{1/4}\lim_{k\to\infty}\vartheta_{n_k}\frac{\sqrt{n_k}}{\log^{7/4}{n_k}}\in [0,\infty)$ or $u=\infty$. The proof uses the saddle point method. A comparison with the similar statistic for random integer partitions of $n$ is also given.

The Aharoni--Korman conjecture for $N$-free posets with no infinite antichain
We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a $P_4$-free graph to be a cograph. This allows us to obtain a simple proof of the fact that finite $P_4$-free graphs are finite cographs. We also prove that $N$-free chain complete posets and $N$-free posets with no infinite antichains are series-parallel. As a consequence, we obtain that every $N$-free poset with no infinite antichain has a chain and a partition into antichains so that each part intersects the chain. This answers a conjecture of Aharoni and Korman (Order \textbf{9} (1992) 245--253) in this case.

Unimodality of the Andrews-Garvan-Dyson cranks of partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The main objective of this paper is to investigate the distribution of the Andrews-Garvan-Dyson crank of a partition. Let $M(m,n)$ denote the number of partitions of $n$ with the Andrews-Garvan-Dyson crank $m$, we show that the sequence \break $\{M(m,n)\}_{|m|\leq n-1}$ is unimodal for $n\geq 44$. It turns out that the unimodality of \break $\{M(m,n)\}_{|m|\leq n-1}$ is related to the monotonicity properties of two partition \break functions $p_k(n)$ and $pp_k(n)$. Let $p_k(n)$ denote the number of partitions of $n$ with at most $k$ parts such that the largest part appears at least twice and let $pp_k(n)$ denote the number of pairs $(α,β)$ of partitions of $n$, where $α$ is a partition counted by $p_k(i)$ and $β$ is a partition counted by $p_{k+1}(n-i)$ for $0\leq i\leq n$. We show that $p_k(n)\geq p_k(n-1)$ for $k\geq 5$ and $n\geq 14$ and $pp_k(n)\geq pp_k(n-1)$ for $k\geq 3$ and $n\geq 2$. With the aid of the monotonicity properties on $p_k(n)$ and $pp_k(n)$, we show that $M(m,n)\geq M(m,n-1)$ for $n\geq 14$ and $ 0\leq m \leq n-2$ and $M(m-1,n)\geq M(m,n)$ for $n\geq 44$ and $1\leq m\leq n-1$. By means of the symmetry $M(m,n)=M(-m,n)$, we find that $M(m-1,n)\geq M(m,n)$ for $n\geq 44$ and $1\leq m\leq n-1$ implies that the sequence $\{M(m,n)\}_{|m|\leq n-1}$ is unimodal for $n\geq 44$. We also give a proof of an upper bound for ospt(n) conjectured by Chan and Mao in light of the inequality $M(m-1,n)\geq M(m,n)$ for $n\geq 44$ and $0\leq m\leq n-1$.

The q-Hahn PushTASEP
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the $q$-Hahn PushTASEP --- an integrable stochastic interacting particle system which is a 3-parameter generalization of the PushTASEP, a well-known close relative of the TASEP (Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process). The transition probabilities in the $q$-Hahn PushTASEP are expressed through the $_4φ_3$ basic hypergeometric function. Under suitable limits, the $q$-Hahn PushTASEP degenerates to all known integrable (1+1)-dimensional stochastic systems with a pushing mechanism. One can thus view our new system as a pushing counterpart of the $q$-Hahn TASEP introduced by Povolotsky (2013). We establish Markov duality relations and contour integral formulas for the $q$-Hahn PushTASEP. In a $q\to 1$ limit of our process we arrive at a random recursion which, in a special case, appears to be similar to the inverse-Beta polymer model. However, unlike in recursions for Beta polymer models, the weights (i.e., the coefficients of the recursion) in our model depend on the previous values of the partition function in a nontrivial manner.
Distinguishing number of Urysohn metric spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
The distinguishing number of a structure is the smallest size of a partition of its elements so that only the trivial automorphism of the structure preserves each cell of the partition. We show that for any countable subset of the positive real numbers, the corresponding countable homogeneous Urysohn metric space, when it exists, has distinguishing number 2 or the distinguishing number is infinite. While it is known that a sufficiently large finite primitive structure has distinguishing number 2, unless its automorphism group is the full symmetric group or alternating group, the infinite case is open and these countable Urysohn metric spaces provide further confirmation toward the conjecture that all primitive homogeneous countably infinite structures have distinguishing number 2 or else the distinguishing number is infinite.
Cyclic quasi-symmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The ring of cyclic quasi-symmetric functions and its non-Escher subring are introduced in this paper. A natural basis consists of fundamental cyclic quasi-symmetric functions; for the non-Escher subring they arise as toric $P$-partition enumerators, for toric posets $P$ with a total cyclic order. The associated structure constants are determined by cyclic shuffles of permutations. We then prove the following positivity phenomenon: for every non-hook shape $λ$, the coefficients in the expansion of the Schur function $s_λ$ in terms of fundamental cyclic quasi-symmetric functions are nonnegative. The proof relies on the existence of a cyclic descent map on the standard Young tableaux (SYT) of shape $λ$. The theory has applications to the enumeration of cyclic shuffles and SYT by cyclic descents.
New bounds on the maximum size of Sperner partition systems
Published in European J. Combin. 90 (2020), 103165, 18 pp • View PublicationBIB
An $(n,k)$-Sperner partition system is a collection of partitions of some $n$-set, each into $k$ nonempty classes, such that no class of any partition is a subset of a class of any other. The maximum number of partitions in an $(n,k)$-Sperner partition system is denoted $\mathrm{SP}(n,k)$. In this paper we introduce a new construction for Sperner partition systems and use it to asymptotically determine $\mathrm{SP}(n,k)$ in many cases as $\frac{n}{k}$ becomes large. We also give a slightly improved upper bound for $\mathrm{SP}(n,k)$ and exhibit an infinite family of parameter sets $(n,k)$ for which this bound is tight.

Central limit theorems for patterns in multiset permutations and set partitions
Published in Annals of Applied Probability, 30 (1), pp. 287-323, 2020 • View PublicationBIB
We use the recently developed method of weighted dependency graphs to prove central limit theorems for the number of occurrences of any fixed pattern in multiset permutations and in set partitions. This generalizes results for patterns of size 2 in both settings, obtained by Canfield, Janson and Zeilberger and Chern, Diaconis, Kane and Rhoades, respectively.
An output-sensitive Algorithm to partition a Sequence of Integers into Subsets with equal Sums
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 20 no. 2, Discrete Algorithms (January 24, 2019) dmtcs:4994 • View PublicationBIB
We present a polynomial time algorithm, which solves a nonstandard Variation of the well-known PARTITION-problem: Given positive integers $n, k$ and $t$ such that $t \geq n$ and $k \cdot t = {n+1 \choose 2}$, the algorithm partitions the elements of the set $I_n = \{1, \ldots, n\}$ into $k$ mutually disjoint subsets $T_j$ such that $\cup_{j=1}^k T_j = I_n$ and $\sum_{x \in T_{j}} x = t$ for each $j \in \{1,2, \ldots, k\}$. The algorithm needs $\mathcal{O}(n \cdot ( \frac{n}{2k} + \log \frac{n(n+1)}{2k} ))$ steps to insert the $n$ elements of $I_n$ into the $k$ sets $T_j$.

On partition identities of Capparelli and Primc
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that, up to multiplication by a factor $\frac{1}{(cq;q)_{\infty}}$, the weighted words version of Capparelli's identity is a particular case of the weighted words version of Primc's identity. We prove this first using recurrences, and then bijectively. We also give finite versions of both identities.
$k$-Schur expansions of Catalan functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We make a broad conjecture about the $k$-Schur positivity of Catalan functions, symmetric functions which generalize the (parabolic) Hall-Littlewood polynomials. We resolve the conjecture with positive combinatorial formulas in cases which address the $k$-Schur expansion of (1) Hall-Littlewood polynomials, proving the $q=0$ case of the strengthened Macdonald positivity conjecture of Lapointe, Lascoux, and Morse; (2) the product of a Schur function and a $k$-Schur function when the indexing partitions concatenate to a partition, describing a class of Gromov-Witten invariants for the quantum cohomology of complete flag varieties; (3) $k$-split polynomials, proving a substantial case of a problem of Broer and Shimozono-Weyman on parabolic Hall-Littlewood polynomials. In addition, we prove the conjecture that $k$-Schur functions defined in terms of $k$-split polynomials agree with strong tableau $k$-Schur functions.

Finding Independent Transversals Efficiently
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 29 (2020) 780-806 • View PublicationBIB
We give an efficient algorithm that, given a graph $G$ and a partition $V_1,\ldots,V_m$ of its vertex set, finds either an independent transversal (an independent set $\{v_1,\ldots,v_m\}$ in $G$ such that $v_i\in V_i$ for each $i$), or a subset $\mathcal B$ of vertex classes such that the subgraph of $G$ induced by $\bigcup\mathcal B$ has a small dominating set. A non-algorithmic proof of this result has been known for a number of years and has been applied to solve many other problems. Thus we are able to give algorithmic versions of many of these applications, a few of which we describe explicitly here.
Matroid-minor Hopf algebra: a cancellation-free antipode formula and other applications of sign-reversing involutions
In this paper, we give a cancellation-free antipode formula for the matroid-minor Hopf algebra. We then explore applications of this formula. For example, the cancellation-free formula expresses the antipode of uniform matroids as a sum over certain ordered set partitions. We also prove that all matroids over any hyperfield (in the sense of Baker and Bowler) have cancellation-free antipode formulas; furthermore, the cancellations in the antipode are independent of the hyperfield structure and only depend on the underlying matroid.

Hodge-Riemann relations for Potts model partition functions
We prove that the Hessians of nonzero partial derivatives of the (homogenous) multivariate Tutte polynomial of any matroid have exactly one positive eigenvalue on the positive orthant when $0<q\leq 1$. Consequences are proofs of the strongest conjecture of Mason and negative dependence properties for $q$-state Potts model partition functions.
Log-Concave Polynomials II: High-Dimensional Walks and an FPRAS for Counting Bases of a Matroid
Published • View PublicationBIB
We design an FPRAS to count the number of bases of any matroid given by an independent set oracle, and to estimate the partition function of the random cluster model of any matroid in the regime where $0<q<1$. Consequently, we can sample random spanning forests in a graph and (approximately) compute the reliability polynomial of any matroid. We also prove the thirty year old conjecture of Mihail and Vazirani that the bases exchange graph of any matroid has expansion at least 1. One of our key observations is a close connection between pure simplicial complexes and multiaffine homogeneous polynomials. Specifically, if $X$ is a pure simplicial complex with positive weights on its maximal faces, we can associate with $X$ a multiaffine homogeneous polynomial $p_{X}$ such that the eigenvalues of the localized random walks on $X$ correspond to the eigenvalues of the Hessian of derivatives of $p_{X}$.

Partitions of Matrix Spaces With an Application to $q$-Rook Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the row-space partition and the pivot partition on the matrix space $\mathbb{F}_q^{n \times m}$. We show that both these partitions are reflexive and that the row-space partition is self-dual. Moreover, using various combinatorial methods, we explicitly compute the Krawtchouk coefficients associated with these partitions. This establishes MacWilliams-type identities for the row-space and pivot enumerators of linear rank-metric codes. We then generalize the Singleton-like bound for rank-metric codes, and introduce two new concepts of code extremality. Both of them generalize the notion of MRD codes and are preserved by trace-duality. Moreover, codes that are extremal according to either notion satisfy strong rigidity properties analogous to those of MRD codes. As an application of our results to combinatorics, we give closed formulas for the $q$-rook polynomials associated with Ferrers diagram boards. Moreover, we exploit connections between matrices over finite fields and rook placements to prove that the number of matrices of rank $r$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ supported on a Ferrers diagram is a polynomial in $q$, whose degree is strictly increasing in $r$. Finally, we investigate the natural analogues of the MacWilliams Extension Theorem for the rank, the row-space, and the pivot partitions.

From multiline queues to Macdonald polynomials via the exclusion process
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently James Martin introduced multiline queues, and used them to give a combinatorial formula for the stationary distribution of the multispecies asymmetric simple exclusion exclusion process (ASEP) on a circle. The ASEP is a model of particles hopping on a one-dimensional lattice, which was introduced around 1970, and has been extensively studied in statistical mechanics, probability, and combinatorics. In this article we give an independent proof of Martin's result, and we show that by introducing additional statistics on multiline queues, we can use them to give a new combinatorial formula for both the symmetric Macdonald polynomials P_{lambda}(x; q, t), and the nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials E_{lambda}(x; q, t), where lambda is a partition. This formula is rather different from others that have appeared in the literature, such as the formulas due to Haglund, Haiman, and Loehr, the formula due to Ram and Yip, and the one due to Lenart. Our proof uses results of Cantini, de Gier, and Wheeler, who recently linked the multispecies ASEP on a circle to Macdonald polynomials.
