Location of zeros for the partition function of the Ising model on bounded degree graphs

The seminal Lee-Yang theorem states that for any graph the zeros of the partition function of the ferromagnetic Ising model lie on the unit circle in $\mathbb C$. In fact the union of the zeros of all graphs is dense on the unit circle. In this paper we study the location of the zeros for the class of graphs of bounded maximum degree $d\geq 3$, both in the ferromagnetic and the anti-ferromagnetic case. We determine the location exactly as a function of the inverse temperature and the degree $d$. An important step in our approach is to translate to the setting of complex dynamics and analyze a dynamical system that is naturally associated to the partition function.

We consider the problem of determining when the difference of two ribbon Schur functions is a single Schur function. We fully classify the five infinite families of pairs of ribbon Schur functions whose difference is a single Schur function with corresponding partition having at most two parts at least $2$. We also prove an identity for differences of ribbon Schur functions and we determine some necessary conditions for such a difference to be Schur-positive, depending on the distribution of $1$'s and the end row lengths.

We determine every Jordan type partition that occurs as the Jordan block decomposition for the multiplication map by a linear form in a height two homogeneous complete intersection (CI) Artinian algebra $A$ over an algebraically closed field $\sf k$ of characteristic zero or large enough. We show that these CI Jordan type partitions are those satisfying specific numerical conditions; also, given the Hilbert function $H(A)$, they are completely determined by which higher Hessians of $A$ vanish at the point corresponding to the linear form. We also show new combinatorial results about such partitions, and in particular we give ways to construct them from a branch label or hook code, showing how branches are attached to a fundamental triangle to form the Ferrers graph.
Low analytic rank implies low partition rank for tensors
A tensor defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}$ has low analytic rank if the distribution of its values differs significantly from the uniform distribution. An order $d$ tensor has partition rank 1 if it can be written as a product of two tensors of order less than $d$, and it has partition rank at most $k$ if it can be written as a sum of $k$ tensors of partition rank 1. In this paper, we prove that if the analytic rank of an order $d$ tensor is at most $r$, then its partition rank is at most $f(r,d,|\mathbb{F}|)$. Previously, this was known with $f$ being an Ackermann-type function in $r$ and $d$ but not depending on $\mathbb{F}$. The novelty of our result is that $f$ has only tower-type dependence on its parameters. It follows from our results that a biased polynomial has low rank; there too we obtain a tower-type dependence improving the previously known Ackermann-type bound.

Let $G = (V,E)$ be a simple graph and let $\{R,B\}$ be a partition of $E$. We prove that whenever $|E| + \min\{ |R|, |B| \} > { |V| \choose 2 }$, there exists a subgraph of $G$ isomorphic to $K_3$ which contains edges from both $R$ and $B$. We conjecture a natural generalization to partitions with more blocks.

A cycle of length $t$ in a hypergraph is an alternating sequence $v_1,e_1,v_2\dots,v_t,e_t$ of distinct vertices $v_i$ and distinct edges $e_i$ so that $\{v_i,v_{i+1}\}\subseteq e_i$ (with $v_{t+1}:=v_1$). Let $λK_n^h$ be the $λ$-fold $n$-vertex complete $h$-graph. Let $\mathcal G=(V,E)$ be a hypergraph all of whose edges are of size at least $h$, and $2\leq c_1\leq \dots\leq c_k\leq |V|$. In order to partition the edge set of $\mathcal G$ into cycles of specified lengths $c_1, \dots, c_k$, an obvious necessary condition is that $\sum_{i=1}^k c_i=|E|$. We show that this condition is sufficient in the following cases:
(i) $h\geq \max\{c_k, \lceil n/2 \rceil+1\}$;
(ii) $\mathcal G=λK_n^h$, $h\geq \lceil n/2 \rceil+2$;
(iii) $\mathcal G=K_n^h$, $c_1= \dots=c_k:=c$, $c|n(n-1), n\geq 85$.
In (ii), we guarantee that each cycle is almost regular. In (iii), we also solve the case where a "small" subset $L$ of edges of $K_n^h$ is removed.

Let $H$ be a graph allowing loops as well as vertex and edge weights. We prove that, for every triangle-free graph $G$ without isolated vertices, the weighted number of graph homomorphisms $\hom(G, H)$ satisfies the inequality \[ \hom(G, H ) \le \prod_{uv \in E(G)} \hom(K_{d_u,d_v}, H )^{1/(d_ud_v)}, \] where $d_u$ denotes the degree of vertex $u$ in $G$. In particular, one has \[ \hom(G, H )^{1/|E(G)|} \le \hom(K_{d,d}, H )^{1/d^2} \] for every $d$-regular triangle-free $G$. The triangle-free hypothesis on $G$ is best possible. More generally, we prove a graphical Brascamp-Lieb type inequality, where every edge of $G$ is assigned some two-variable function. These inequalities imply tight upper bounds on the partition function of various statistical models such as the Ising and Potts models, which includes independent sets and graph colorings.
For graph colorings, corresponding to $H = K_q$, we show that the triangle-free hypothesis on $G$ may be dropped; this is also valid if some of the vertices of $K_q$ are looped. A corollary is that among $d$-regular graphs, $G = K_{d,d}$ maximizes the quantity $c_q(G)^{1/|V(G)|}$ for every $q$ and $d$, where $c_q(G)$ counts proper $q$-colorings of $G$.
Finally, we show that if the edge-weight matrix of $H$ is positive semidefinite, then \[ \hom(G, H) \le \prod_{v \in V(G)} \hom(K_{d_v+1}, H )^{1/(d_v+1)}. \] This implies that among $d$-regular graphs, $G = K_{d+1}$ maximizes $\hom(G, H)^{1/|V(G)|}$. For 2-spin Ising models, our results give a complete characterization of extremal graphs: complete bipartite graphs maximize the partition function of 2-spin antiferromagnetic models and cliques maximize the partition function of ferromagnetic models.
These results settle a number of conjectures by Galvin-Tetali, Galvin, and Cohen-Csikvári-Perkins-Tetali, and provide an alternate proof to a conjecture by Kahn.

This paper will primarily present a method of proving generating function identities for partitions from linked partition ideals. The method we introduce is built on a conjecture by George Andrews and that those generating functions satisfy some $q$-difference equations. We will come up with the generating functions of partitions in the Kanade--Russell conjectures to illustrate the effectiveness of this method.
On Intersection Graphs of Graphs and Hypergraphs: A Survey
In this survey, we have attempted to show some developmental milestones on the characterizations of intersection graphs of hypergraphs. The theory of intersection graphs of hypergraphs has been a classical topic in the theory of special graphs. To conclude, at the end, we have listed some open problems posed by various authors whose work has contributed to this survey and also the new trends coming out of intersection graphs. We propose a new approach to study plethysm coefficients by using the Schur-Weyl duality between the symmetric group and the partition algebra. This allows us to explain the stability properties of plethysm and Kronecker coefficients in a simple and uniform fashion for the first time. We prove the strengthened Foulkes' conjecture for stable plethysm coefficients in an elementary fashion.

Let p(n, k) denote the number of partitions of n into parts less than or equal to k. We show several properties of this function modulo 2. First, we prove that for fixed positive integers k and m, p(n,k) is periodic modulo m. Using this, we are able to find lower and upper bounds for the number of odd values of the function for a fixed k.

Weights of permutations were originally introduced by Dugan, Glennon, Gunnells, and Steingrímsson (Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 164:24-49, 2019) in their study of the combinatorics of tiered trees. Given a permutation $σ$ viewed as a sequence of integers, computing the weight of $σ$ involves recursively counting descents of certain subpermutations of $σ$. Using this weight function, one can define a $q$-analog $E_n(x,q)$ of the Eulerian polynomials. We prove two main results regarding weights of permutations and the polynomials $E_n(x,q)$. First, we show that the coefficients of $E_n(x, q)$ stabilize as $n$ goes to infinity, which was conjectured by Dugan, Glennon, Gunnells, and Steingrímsson (Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 164:24-49, 2019), and enables the definition of the formal power series $W_d(t)$, which has interesting combinatorial properties. Second, we derive a recurrence relation for $E_n(x, q)$, similar to the known recurrence for the classical Eulerian polynomials $A_n(x)$. Finally, we give a recursive formula for the numbers of certain integer partitions and, from this, conjecture a recursive formula for the stabilized coefficients mentioned above.
General Equitable Decompositions for Graphs with Symmetries

Using the theory of equitable decompositions it is possible to decompose a matrix $M$ appropriately associated with a given graph. The result is a collection of smaller matrices whose collective eigenvalues are the same as the eigenvalues of the original matrix $M$. This is done by decomposing the matrix over a graph symmetry. Previously it was shown that a matrix can be equitably decomposed over any uniform, basic, or separable automorphism. Here we extend this theory to show that it is possible to equitably decompose a matrix over any automorphism of a graph, without restriction. Moreover, we give a step-by-step procedure which can be used to generate such a decomposition. We also prove under mild conditions that if a matrix $M$ is equitably decomposed the resulting divisor matrix, which is the divisor matrix of the associated equitable partition, will have the same spectral radius as the original matrix $M$.
Categories of Two-Colored Pair Partitions, Part I: Categories Indexed by Cyclic Groups

We classify certain categories of partitions of finite sets subject to specific rules on the colorization of points and the sizes of blocks. More precisely, we consider pair partitions such that each block contains exactly one white and one black point when rotated to one line; however crossings are allowed. There are two families of such categories, the first of which is indexed by cyclic groups and is covered in the present article; the second family will be the content of a follow-up article. Via a Tannaka-Krein result, the categories in the two families correspond to easy quantum groups interpolating the classical unitary group and Wang's free unitary quantum group. In fact, they are all half-liberated in some sense and our results imply that there are many more half-liberation procedures than previously expected. However, we focus on a purely combinatorial approach leaving quantum group aspects aside.

We prove seven of the Rogers-Ramanujan type identities modulo $12$ that were conjectured by Kanade and Russell. Included among these seven are the two original modulo $12$ identities, in which the products have asymmetric congruence conditions, as well as the three symmetric identities related to the principally specialized characters of certain level $2$ modules of $A_9^{(2)}$. We also give reductions of four other conjectures in terms of single-sum basic hypergeometric series.

The class of minimal difference partitions MDP($q$) (with gap $q$) is defined by the condition that successive parts in an integer partition differ from one another by at least $q\ge 0$. In a recent series of papers by A. Comtet and collaborators, the MDP($q$) ensemble with uniform measure was interpreted as a combinatorial model for quantum systems with fractional statistics, that is, interpolating between the classic Bose-Einstein ($q=0$) and Fermi-Dirac ($q=1$) cases. This was done by formally allowing values $q \in (0,1)$ using an analytic continuation of the limit shape of the corresponding Young diagrams calculated for integer $q$. To justify this "replica-trick", we introduce a more general model based on a variable MDP-type condition encoded by an integer sequence $(q_i)$, whereby the (limiting) gap $q$ is naturally interpreted as the Cesàro mean of $(q_i)$. In this model, we find the family of limit shapes parameterized by $q \in [0,\infty)$ confirming the earlier answer, and also obtain the asymptotics of the number of parts.

In this paper, we present an equitable partition theorem of tensors, which gives the relations between $H$-eigenvalues of a tensor and its quotient equitable tensor and extends the equitable partitions of graphs to hypergraphs. Furthermore, with the aid of it, some properties and $H$-eigenvalues of the generalized power hypergraphs are obtained, which extends some known results, including some results of Yuan, Qi and Shao.
Reconfiguration of graphs with connectivity constraints

A graph $G$ realizes the degree sequence $S$ if the degrees of its vertices is $S$. Hakimi gave a necessary and sufficient condition to guarantee that there exists a connected multigraph realizing $S$. Taylor later proved that any connected multigraph can be transformed into any other via a sequence of flips (maintaining connectivity at any step). A flip consists in replacing two edges $ab$ and $cd$ by the diagonals $ac$ and $bd$. In this paper, we study a generalization of this problem. A set of subsets of vertices $\mathcal{CC}$ is \emph{nested} if for every $C,C' \in \mathcal{CC}$ either $C \cap C' = \emptyset$ or one is included in the other. We are interested in multigraphs realizing a degree sequence $S$ and such that all the sets of a nested collection $\mathcal{CC}$ induce connected subgraphs. Such constraints naturally appear in tandem mass spectrometry.
We show that it is possible to decide in polynomial if there exists a graph realizing $S$ where all the sets in $\mathcal{CC}$ induce connected subgraphs. Moreover, we prove that all such graphs can be obtained via a sequence of flips such that all the intermediate graphs also realize $S$ and where all the sets of $\mathcal{CC}$ induce connected subgraphs. Our proof is algorithmic and provides a polynomial time approximation algorithm on the shortest sequence of flips between two graphs whose ratio depends on the depth of the nested partition.
Tableau posets and the fake degrees of coinvariant algebras

We introduce two new partial orders on the standard Young tableaux of a given partition shape, in analogy with the strong and weak Bruhat orders on permutations. Both posets are ranked by the major index statistic offset by a fixed shift. The existence of such ranked poset structures allows us to classify the realizable major index statistics on standard tableaux of arbitrary straight shape and certain skew shapes. By a theorem of Lusztig--Stanley, this classification can be interpreted as determining which irreducible representations of the symmetric group exist in which homogeneous components of the corresponding coinvariant algebra, strengthening a recent result of the third author for the modular major index. Our approach is to identify patterns in standard tableaux that allow one to mutate descent sets in a controlled manner. By work of Lusztig and Stembridge, the arguments extend to a classification of all nonzero fake degrees of coinvariant algebras for finite complex reflection groups in the infinite family of Shephard--Todd groups.
