Cylindric rhombic tableaux and the two-species ASEP on a ring

The asymmetric simple exclusion exclusion process (ASEP) is a model of particles hopping on a one-dimensional lattice of n sites. It was introduced around 1970, and since then has been extensively studied by researchers in statistical mechanics, probability, and combinatorics. Recently the ASEP on a lattice with open boundaries has been linked to Koornwinder polynomials, and the ASEP on a ring has been linked to Macdonald polynomials. In this article we study the two-species asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on a ring, in which two kinds of particles ("heavy" and "light"), as well as "holes," can hop both clockwise and counterclockwise (at rates 1 or t depending on the particle types) on a ring of n sites. We introduce some new tableaux on a cylinder called cylindric rhombic tableaux (CRT), and use them to give a formula for the stationary distribution of the two-species ASEP -- each probability is expressed as a sum over all CRT of a fixed type. When lambda is a partition in {0,1,2}^n, we then give a formula for the nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomial E_{lambda} and the symmetric Macdonald polynomial P_{lambda} by refining our tableaux formulas for the stationary distribution.

A strongly concave composition of $n$ is an integer partition with strictly decreasing and increasing parts. In this paper we give a uniform asymptotic formula for the rank statistic of a strongly concave composition introduced by Andrews, Rhoades and Zwegers ['Modularity of the concave composition generating function', Algebra \& Number Theory 7 (2013), no. 9, 2103--2139].
Two Questions about the Fractional Counting of Partitions
We recall the notion of fractional enumeration and immediately focus on the fractional counting of integer partitions, where each partition gets credit equal to the reciprocal of the product of its parts. We raise two intriguing questions regarding this count, and for each of these questions, we are pledging a 100 US dollars donation to the OEIS in honor of the first solver. In this revised version we announce that both questions have been answered. The first was first answered by Will Sawin and the second was answered by Christopher Ryba. A donation to the OEIS, of 100 US dollars each, in their honor has been made.
R-BBG$_2$: Recursive Bipartition of Bi-connected Graphs
Given an undirected graph $G(V, E)$, it is well known that partitioning a graph $G$ into $q$ connected subgraphs of equal or specificed sizes is in general NP-hard problem. On the other hand, it has been shown that the q-partition problem is solvable in polynomial time for q-connected graphs. For example, efficient polynomial time algorithms for finding 2-partition (bipartition) or 3-partition of 2-connected or 3-connected have been developed in the literature. In this paper, we are interested in the following problem: given a bi-connected graph $G$ of size $n$, can we partition it into two (connected) sub-graphs, $G[V_1]$ and $G[V_2]$ of sizes $n_1$ and $n_2$ such as both $G[V_1]$ and $G[V_2]$ are also bi-connected (and $n_1+n_2=n$)? We refer to this problem as the recursive bipartition problem of bi-connected graphs, denoted by R-BBG$_2$. We show that a ploynomial algorithm exists to both decide the recursive bipartion problem R-BBG$_2$ and find the corresponding bi-connected subgraphs when such a recursive bipartition exists.

We will prove an identity involving refined $q$-trinomial coefficients. We then extend this identity to two infinite families of doubly bounded polynomial identities using transformation properties of the refined $q$-trinomials in an iterative fashion in the spirit of Bailey chains. One of these two hierarchies contains an identity which is equivalent to Capparelli's first Partition Theorem.

A decomposition of a multigraph $G$ is a partition of its edges into subgraphs $G(1), \ldots , G(k)$. It is called an $r$-factorization if every $G(i)$ is $r$-regular and spanning. If $G$ is a subgraph of $H$, a decomposition of $G$ is said to be enclosed in a decomposition of $H$ if, for every $1 \leq i \leq k$, $G(i)$ is a subgraph of $H(i)$.
Feghali and Johnson gave necessary and sufficient conditions for a given decomposition of $λK_n$ to be enclosed in some $2$-edge-connected $r$-factorization of $μK_{m}$ for some range of values for the parameters $n$, $m$, $λ$, $μ$, $r$: $r=2$, $μ>λ$ and either $m \geq 2n-1$, or $m=2n-2$ and $μ= 2$ and $λ=1$, or $n=3$ and $m=4$. We generalize their result to every $r \geq 2$ and $m \geq 2n - 2$. We also give some sufficient conditions for enclosing a given decomposition of $λK_n$ in some $2$-edge-connected $r$-factorization of $μK_{m}$ for every $r \geq 3$ and $m = (2 - C)n$, where $C$ is a constant that depends only on $r$, $λ$ and~$μ$.
Lifting degenerate simplices with a single volume constraint

Let $M^d$ be the spherical, Euclidean, or hyperbolic space of dimension $d\ge n+1$. Given any degenerate $(n+1)$-simplex $\mathbf{A}$ in $M^d$ with non-degenerate $n$-faces $F_i$, there is a natural partition of the set of $n$-faces into two subsets $X_1$ and $X_2$ such that $\sum_{X_1}V_n(F_i)=\sum_{X_2}V_n(F_i)$, except for a special spherical case where $X_2$ is the empty set and $\sum_{X_1}V_n(F_i)=V_n(\mathbb{S}^n)$ instead. For all cases, if the vertices vary smoothly in $M^d$ with a \emph{single} volume constraint that $\sum_{X_1}V_n(F_i)-\sum_{X_2}V_n(F_i)$ is preserved as a constant (0 or $V_n(\mathbb{S}^n)$), we prove that if a \emph{stress} invariant $c_{n-1}(α^{n-1})$ of the degenerate simplex is non-zero, then the vertices will be confined to a lower dimensional $M^n$ for any sufficiently small motion. This answers a question of the author and we also show that in the Euclidean case, $c_{n-1}(α^{n-1})=0$ is equivalent to the vertices of a \emph{dual} degenerate $(n+1)$-simplex lying on an $(n-1)$-sphere in $\mathbb{R}^n$.
Hyper $b$-ary expansions and Stern polynomials
We study a recently introduced base $b$ polynomial analog of Stern's diatomic sequence, which generalizes Stern polynomials of Klavar, Dilcher, Ericksen, Mansour, Stolarsky, and others. We lift some basic properties of base $2$ Stern polynomials to arbitrary base, and introduce a matrix characterization of Stern polynomials. By specializing, we recover some new number theoretic results about hyper $b$-ary partitions, which count partitions of $n$ into powers of $b$.

We prove that if the edges of a graph G can be colored blue or red in such a way that every vertex belongs to a monochromatic k-clique of each color, then G has at least 4(k-1) vertices. This confirms a conjecture of Bucic, Lidicky, Long, and Wagner (arXiv:1805.11278[math.CO]) and thereby solves the 2-dimensional case of their problem about partitions of discrete boxes with the k-piercing property. We also characterize the case of equality in our result.
A New Characterization of $\mathcal{V}$-Posets

In 2016, Hasebe and Tsujie gave a recursive characterization of the set of induced $N$-free and bowtie-free posets; Misanantenaina and Wagner studied these orders further, naming them "$\mathcal{V}$-posets". Here we offer a new characterization of $\mathcal{V}$-posets by introducing a property we refer to as autonomy. A poset $\cP$ is said to be autonomous if there exists a directed acyclic graph $D$ (with adjacency matrix $U$) whose transitive closure is $\cP$, with the property that any total ordering of the vertices of $D$ so that Gaussian elimination of $U^TU$ proceeds without row swaps is a linear extension of $\cP$. Autonomous posets arise from the theory of pressing sequences in graphs, a problem with origins in phylogenetics. The pressing sequences of a graph can be partitioned into families corresponding to posets; because of the interest in enumerating pressing sequences, we investigate when this partition has only one block, that is, when the pressing sequences are all linear extensions of a single autonomous poset. We also provide an efficient algorithm for recognition of autonomy using structural information and the forbidden subposet characterization, and we discuss a few open questions that arise in connection with these posets.
Elementary Polynomial Identities Involving $q$-Trinomial Coefficients

We use $q$-binomial theorem to prove three new polynomial identities involving $q$-trinomial coefficients. We then use summation formulas for the $q$-trinomial coefficients to convert our identities into another set of three polynomial identities, which imply Capparelli's partition theorems when the degree of the polynomial tends to infinity. This way we also obtain an interesting new result for the sum of the Capparelli's products. We finish this paper by proposing an infinite hierarchy of polynomial identities.
From $q$-Stirling numbers to the Delta Conjecture: a viewpoint from vincular patterns

The distribution of certain Mahonian statistic (called $\mathrm{BAST}$) introduced by Babson and Steingrímsson over the set of permutations that avoid vincular pattern $1\underline{32}$, is shown bijectively to match the distribution of major index over the same set. This new layer of equidistribution is then applied to give alternative interpretations of two related $q$-Stirling numbers of the second kind, studied by Carlitz and Gould. Moreover, extensions to an Euler-Mahonian statistic over ordered set partitions, and to statistics over ordered multiset partitions present themselves naturally. The latter of which is shown to be related to the recently proven Delta Conjecture. During the course, a refined relation between $\mathrm{BAST}$ and its reverse complement $\mathrm{STAT}$ is derived as well.
Topology of Z_3 equivariant Hilbert schemes

Motivated by work of Gusein-Zade, Luengo, and Melle-Hernández, we study a specific generating series of arm and leg statistics on partitions, which is known to compute the Poincaré polynomials of Z_3-equivariant Hilbert schemes of points in the plane, where Z_3 acts diagonally. This generating series has a conjectural product formula, a proof of which has remained elusive over the last ten years. We introduce a new combinatorial correspondence between partitions of n and {1,2}-compositions of n, which behaves well with respect to the statistic in question. As an application, we use this correspondence to compute the highest Betti numbers of the Z_3 equivariant Hilbert schemes.
Shell Tableaux: A set partition analogue of vacillating tableaux

Schur-Weyl duality is a fundamental framework in combinatorial representation theory. It intimately relates the irreducible representations of a group to the irreducible representations of its centralizer algebra. We investigate the analog of Schur-Weyl duality for the group of unipotent upper triangular matrices over a finite field. In this case, the character theory of these upper triangular matrices is "wild" or unattainable. Thus we employ a generalization, known as supercharacter theory, that creates a striking variation on the character theory of the symmetric group with combinatorics built from set partitions. In this paper, we present a combinatorial formula for calculating a restriction and induction of supercharacters based on statistics of set partitions and seashell inspired diagrams. We use these formulas to create a graph that encodes the decomposition of a tensor space, and develop an analog of Young tableaux, known as shell tableaux, to index paths in this graph.
A Dichotomy Theorem for First-Fit Chain Partitions

First-Fit is a greedy algorithm for partitioning the elements of a poset into chains. Let $\textrm{FF}(w,Q)$ be the maximum number of chains that First-Fit uses on a $Q$-free poset of width $w$. A result due to Bosek, Krawczyk, and Matecki states that $\textrm{FF}(w,Q)$ is finite when $Q$ has width at most $2$. We describe a family of posets $\mathcal{Q}$ and show that the following dichotomy holds: if $Q\in\mathcal{Q}$, then $\textrm{FF}(w,Q) \le 2^{c(\log w)^2}$ for some constant $c$ depending only on $Q$, and if $Q\not\in\mathcal{Q}$, then $\textrm{FF}(w,Q) \ge 2^w - 1$.

Let $s_ν\circ s_μ$ denote the plethystic product of the Schur functions $s_ν$ and $s_μ$. In this article we define an explicit polynomial representation corresponding to $s_ν\circ s_μ$ with basis indexed by certain `plethystic' semistandard tableaux. Using these representations we prove generalizations of four results on plethysms due to Bruns--Conca--Varbaro, Brion, Ikenmeyer and the authors. In particular, we give a sufficient condition for the multiplicity $\langle s_ν\circ s_μ, s_λ\rangle$ to be stable under insertion of new parts into $μ$ and $λ$. We also characterize all maximal and minimal partitions $λ$ in the dominance order such that $s_λ$ appears in $s_ν\circ s_μ$ and determine the corresponding multiplicities using plethystic semistandard tableaux.
Random polymers via orthogonal Whittaker and symplectic Schur functions
This thesis deals with some $(1+1)$-dimensional lattice path models from the KPZ universality class: the directed random polymer with inverse-gamma weights (known as log-gamma polymer) and its zero temperature degeneration, i.e. the last passage percolation model, with geometric or exponential waiting times. We consider three path geometries: point-to-line, point-to-half-line, and point-to-line with paths restricted to stay in a half-plane. Through exact formulas, we establish new connections between integrable probabilistic models and the ubiquitous Whittaker and Schur functions. More in detail, via the use of A. N. Kirillov's geometric Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (RSK) correspondence, we compute the Laplace transform of the polymer partition functions in the above geometries in terms of orthogonal Whittaker functions. In the case of the first two geometries we also provide multiple contour integral formulas. For the corresponding last passage percolation problems, we obtain new formulas in terms of symplectic Schur functions, both directly via RSK on polygonal arrays and via zero temperature limit from the log-gamma polymer formulas. As scaling limits of the point-to-line and point-to-half-line models with exponential waiting times, we derive Sasamoto's Fredholm determinant formula for the GOE Tracy-Widom distribution, as well as the one-point marginal distribution of the ${\rm Airy}_{2\to1}$ process.
On the number of vertices of projective polytopes
Let $X$ be a configuration of $n$ points in $\mathbb{R}^d$.
What is the maximum number of vertices that $conv(T(X))$ can have among all the possible permissible projective transformations $T$?
In this paper, we investigate this and connected questions. After presenting several upper bounds, we study a closely related problem (via Gale transforms) concerning the number of minimal Radon partitions of a set of points. We then present some bounds for this number that enable us to partially answer a question due to Pach and Szegedy. We also discuss another related problem concerning the size of topes in arrangements of hyperplanes.

The Nekrasov--Okounkov hook length formula provides a fundamental link between the theory of partitions and the coefficients of powers of the Dedekind eta function. In this paper we examine three conjectures presented by Amdeberhan. The first conjecture is a refined Nekrasov--Okounkov formula involving hooks with trivial legs. We prove the conjecture. The second conjecture is on properties of the roots of the underlying D'Arcais polynomials. We give a counterexample and present a new conjecture. The third conjecture is on the unimodality of the coefficients of the involved polynomials. We confirm the conjecture up to the polynomial degree $1000$.

We give a combinatorial formula for the Ehrhart $h^*$-vector of the hypersimplex. In particular, we show that $h^{*}_{d}(Δ_{k,n})$ is the number of hypersimplicial decorated ordered set partitions of type $(k,n)$ with winding number $d$, thereby proving a conjecture of Nick Early. We do this by proving a more general conjecture of Nick Early on the Ehrhart $h^*$-vector of a generic cross-section of a hypercube.
