Distinct parts partitions without sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
Partitions without sequences of consecutive integers as parts have been studied recently by many authors, including Andrews, Holroyd, Liggett, and Romik, among others. Their results include a description of combinatorial properties, hypergeometric representations for the generating functions, and asymptotic formulas for the enumeration functions. We complete a similar investigation of partitions into distinct parts without sequences, which are of particular interest due to their relationship with the Rogers-Ramanujan identities. Our main results include a double series representation for the generating function, an asymptotic formula for the enumeration function, and several combinatorial inequalities.
Convex p-partitions of bipartite graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A set of vertices X of a graph G is convex if it contains all vertices on shortest paths between vertices of X. We prove that for fixed p, all partitions of the vertex set of a bipartite graph into p convex sets can be found in polynomial time.

A linear k-fold Cheeger inequality
Given an undirected graph $G$, the classical Cheeger constant, $h_G$, measures the optimal partition of the vertices into 2 parts with relatively few edges between them based upon the sizes of the parts. The well-known Cheeger's inequality states that $2 λ_1 \le h_G \le \sqrt {2 λ_1}$ where $λ_1$ is the minimum nontrivial eigenvalue of the normalized Laplacian matrix. Recent work has generalized the concept of the Cheeger constant when partitioning the vertices of a graph into $k > 2$ parts. While there are several approaches, recent results have shown these higher-order Cheeger constants to be tightly controlled by $λ_{k-1}$, the $(k-1)$-th nontrivial eigenvalue, to within a quadratic factor. We present a new higher-order Cheeger inequality with several new perspectives. First, we use an alternative higher-order Cheeger constant which considers an "average case" approach. We show this measure is related to the average of the first $k-1$ nontrivial eigenvalues of the normalized Laplacian matrix. Further, using recent techniques, our results provide linear inequalities using the $\infty$-norms of the corresponding eigenvectors. Consequently, unlike previous results, this result is relevant even when $λ_{k-1} \to 1$.

The Twelvefold way, the non-intersecting circles problem, and partitions of multisets
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $n$ be a non-negative integer and $A=\{a_1,\ldots,a_k\}$ be a multi-set with $k$ not necessarily distinct members, where $a_1\leqslant\ldots\leqslant a_k$. We denote by $Δ(n,A)$ the number of ways to partition $n$ as the form $a_1x_1+\ldots+a_kx_k$, where $x_i$'s are distinct positive integers and $x_i< x_{i+1}$ whenever $a_i=a_{i+1}$. We give a recursive formula for $Δ(n,A)$ and some explicit formulas for some special cases. Using this notion we solve the non-intersecting circles problem which asks to evaluate the number of ways to draw $n$ non-intersecting circles in a plane regardless to their sizes. The latter also enumerates the number of unlabelled rooted tree with $n+1$ vertices.

Partitions with the same hook multiset
It is well-known that two conjugate partitions have the same hook multiset. But two different partitions with the same hook multiset may not be conjugate to each other. In $1977$, Herman and Chung proposed the following question: What are the necessary and sufficient conditions for partitions to be determined by their hook multisets up to conjugation? In this paper, we will answer this question by giving a criterion to determine whether two different partitions with the same hook multiset are conjugate to each other.

On colored set partitions of type $B_n$
Published in Cent. Eur. J. Math. 12(9) (2014), 1372--1381 • View PublicationBIB
Generalizing Reiner's notion of set partitions of type $B_n$, we define colored $B_n$-partitions by coloring the elements in and not in the zero-block respectively. Considering the generating function of colored $B_n$-partitions, we get the exact formulas for the expectation and variance of the number of non-zero-blocks in a random colored $B_n$-partition. We find an asymptotic expression of the total number of colored $B_n$-partitions up to an error of $O(n^{-1/2}\log^{7/2}{n})$, and prove that the centralized and normalized number of non-zero-blocks is asymptotic normal over colored $B_n$-partitions.

A Littlewood-Richardson Rule for Dual Stable Grothendieck Polynomials
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 151:23-35, 2017 • View PublicationBIB
For a given skew shape, we build a crystal graph on the set of all reverse plane partitions that have this shape. As a consequence, we get a simple extension of the Littlewood-Richardson rule for the expansion of the corresponding dual stable Grothendieck polynomial in terms of Schur polynomials.

Acyclic Orientations and Spanning Trees
We introduce polytopal cell complexes associated with partial acyclic orientations of a simple graph, which generalize acyclic orientations. Using the theory of cellular resolutions, two of these polytopal cell complexes are observed to minimally resolve certain special combinatorial polynomial ideals related to acyclic orientations. These ideals are explicitly found to be Alexander dual, which relative to comparable results in the literature, generalizes in a cleaner and more illuminating way the well-known duality between permutohedron and tree ideals. The combinatorics underlying these results naturally leads to a canonical way to represent rooted spanning forests of a labelled simple graph as non-crossing trees, and these representations are observed to carry a plethora of information about generalized tree ideals and acyclic orientations of a graph, and about non-crossing partitions of a totally ordered set. A small sample of the enumerative and structural consequences of collecting and organizing this information are studied in detail. Applications of this combinatorial miscellanea are then introduced and explored, namely: Stochastic processes on state space equal to the set of all acyclic orientations of a simple graph, including irreducible Markov chains, which exhibit stationary distributions ranging from linear extensions-based to uniform; a surprising formula for the expected number of acyclic orientations of a random graph; and a purely algebraic presentation of the main problem in bootstrap percolation, likely making it tractable to explore the set of all percolating sets of a graph with a computer.

Mixed r-stirling numbers of the second kind
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Stirling number of the second kind $n\brace k$ counts the number of ways to partition a set of $n$ labeled balls into $k$ non-empty unlabeled cells. As an extension of this, we consider $b_1+b_2+\ldots+b_n$ balls with $b_1$ balls labeled $1$, $b_2$ balls labeled $2$, $\ldots$, $b_n$ balls labeled $n$ and $c_1+c_2+\ldots+c_k$ cells with $c_1$ cells labeled $1$, $c_2$ cells labeled $2$, $\ldots$, $c_k$ cells labeled $k$ and then we called the number of ways to partition the set of these balls into non-empty cells of these types as the \textit{mixed partition numbers}. As an application, we give a new statement of the $r$-Stirling numbers of second kind and $r$-Bell numbers. We also introduce the \textit{$r$-mixed Stirling number of second kind and $r$-mixed Bell numbers}. Finally, for a positive integer $m$ we evaluate the number of ways to write $m$ as the form $m_1\cdot m_2\cdot\ldots\cdot m_k$, where $k\geqslant 1$ and $m_i$'s are positive integers greater than $1$.

An improved upper bound on the diameters of subset partition graphs
In 1992, Kalai and Kleitman proved the first subexponential upper bound for the diameters of convex polyhedra. Eisenbrand et al. proved this bound holds for connected layer families, a novel approach to analyzing polytope diameters. Very recently, Todd improved the Kalai-Kleitman bound for polyhedra to $(n-d)^{1+\log_2d}$. In this note, we prove an analogous upper bound on the diameters of subset partition graphs satisfying a property related to the connectivity property of connected layer families.

Maximal-clique partitions and the Roller Coaster Conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph $G$ is {\em well-covered} if every maximal independent set has the same cardinality $q$. Let $i_k(G)$ denote the number of independent sets of cardinality $k$ in $G$. Brown, Dilcher, and Nowakowski conjectured that the independence sequence $(i_0(G), i_1(G), \ldots, i_q(G))$ was unimodal for any well-ordered graph $G$ with independence number $q$. Michael and Traves disproved this conjecture. Instead they posited the so-called ``Roller Coaster" Conjecture: that the terms \[ i_{\left\lceil\frac{q}2\right\rceil}(G), i_{\left\lceil\frac{q}2\right\rceil+1}(G), \ldots, i_q(G) \] could be in any specified order for some well-covered graph $G$ with independence number $q$. Michael and Traves proved the conjecture for $q<8$ and Matchett extended this to $q<12$. In this paper, we prove the Roller Coaster Conjecture using a construction of graphs with a property related to that of having a maximal-clique partition. In particular, we show, for all pairs of integers $1\le k<q$ and positive integers $m$, that there is a well-covered graph $G$ with independence number $q$ for which every independent set of size $k+1$ is contained in a unique maximal independent set, but each independent set of size $k$ is contained in at least $m$ distinct independent sets.
Acyclic orientations and poly-Bernoulli numbers
The main contribution of this paper is a formula for the number of acyclic orientations of a complete bipartite, $K_{n_1,n_2},$ revealing that it is equal to the poly-Bernoulli number $B_{n_1}^{(-n_2)}$ introduced in 1997 by Kaneko. We also give a simple bijective identification of acyclic orientations and lonesum matrices, confirming a 2008 result of Brewbaker, and show that the poly-Bernoulli numbers behave concavely, as well being symmetric. A second goal is to explore the behaviour of more general complete $r$-partite graphs in the space of the number of acyclic orientations. We prove that the number of acyclic orientations of complete bipartite graphs on $n$ vertices is a unimodular concave function maximised by the Turán graph $T(2,n).$ For tripartite graphs, we derive an explicit formula for its number of its acyclic orientations, for the specific case with a single vertex partition. For more complex complete $r$-partite graphs an algorithmic approach is suggested, taking advantage of the relationship with graph colouring through the result of Stanley, namely the value of the graph colouring polynomial at the value -1. An underlying theme is the exploration of the space of the number of acyclic orientations of graphs. We present various theoretical and computational results, with additional, conjectures for both complete $r$-partite and general graphs to guide future research.

Embedding in $q$-ary $1$-perfect codes and partitions
Published in Discrete Math. 338(11) 2015, 1856-1859 • View PublicationBIB
We prove that every $1$-error-correcting code over a finite field can be embedded in a $1$-perfect code of some larger length. Embedding in this context means that the original code is a subcode of the resulting $1$-perfect code and can be obtained from it by repeated shortening. Further, we generalize the results to partitions: every partition of the Hamming space into $1$-error-correcting codes can be embedded in a partition of a space of some larger dimension into $1$-perfect codes. For the partitions, the embedding length is close to the theoretical bound for the general case and optimal for the binary case. Keywords: error-correcting code, $1$-perfect code, $1$-perfect partition, embedding

A Combinatorial Model for Exceptional Sequences in Type A
Published • View PublicationBIB
Exceptional sequences are certain ordered sequences of quiver representations. We use noncrossing edge-labeled trees in a disk with boundary vertices (expanding on T. Araya's work) to classify exceptional sequences of representations of Q, the linearly-ordered quiver with n vertices. We also show how to use variations of this model to classify c-matrices of Q, to interpret exceptional sequences as linear extensions, and to give a simple bijection between exceptional sequences and certain chains in the lattice of noncrossing partitions. In the case of c-matrices, we also give an interpretation of c-matrix mutation in terms of our noncrossing trees with directed edges.

Operator-valued Jacobi parameters and examples of operator-valued distributions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the setting of distributions taking values in a $C^\ast$-algebra $\mathcal{B}$, we define generalized Jacobi parameters and study distributions they generate. These include numerous known examples and one new family, of $\mathcal{B}$-valued free binomial distributions, for which we are able to compute free convolution powers. Moreover, we develop a convenient combinatorial method for calculating the joint distributions of $\mathcal{B}$-free random variables with Jacobi parameters, utilizing two-color non-crossing partitions. This leads to several new explicit examples of free convolution computations in the operator-valued setting. Additionally, we obtain a counting algorithm for the number of two-color non-crossing pairings of relative finite depth, using only free probabilistic techniques. Finally, we show that the class of distributions with Jacobi parameters is not closed under free convolution.
Disjoint dijoins
Published • View PublicationBIB
A dijoin in a digraph is a set of edges meeting every directed cut. D. R. Woodall conjectured in 1976 that if G is a digraph, and every directed cut of G has at least k edges, then there are k pairwise disjoint dijoins. This remains open, but a capacitated version is known to be false. In particular, A. Schrijver gave a digraph G and a subset S of its edge-set, such that every directed cut contains at least two edges in S, and yet there do not exist two disjoint dijoins included in S. In Schrijver's example, G is planar, and the subdigraph formed by the edges in S consists of three disjoint paths. We conjecture that when k = 2, the disconnectedness of S is crucial: more precisely, that if G is a digraph, and S is a subset of the edges of G that forms a connected subdigraph (as an undirected graph), and every directed cut of G contains at least two edges in S, then we can partition S into two dijoins. We prove this in two special cases: when G is planar, and when the subdigraph formed by the edges in S is a subdivision of a caterpillar.

Stability of coefficients in the Kronecker product of a hook and a rectangle
Published • View PublicationBIB
We use recent work of Jonah Blasiak (2012) to prove a stability result for the coefficients in the Kronecker product of two Schur functions: one indexed by a hook partition and one indexed by a rectangle partition. We also give bounds for the size of the partition starting with which the Kronecker coefficients are stable. Moreover, we show that once the bound is reached, no new Schur functions appear in the decomposition of Kronecker product, thus allowing one to recover the decomposition from the smallest case in which the stability holds.

Some results on ordered and unordered factorization of a positive integers
As a well-known enumerative problem, the number of solutions of the equation $m=m_1+...+m_k$ with $m_1\leqslant...\leqslant m_k$ in positive integers is $Π(m,k)=\sum_{i=0}^kΠ(m-k,i)$ and $Π$ is called the additive partition function. In this paper, we give a recursive formula for the so-called multiplicative partition function $μ_1(m,k):=$ the number of solutions of the equation $m=m_1... m_k$ with $m_1\leqslant...\leqslant m_k$ in positive integers. In particular, using an elementary proof, we give an explicit formula for the cases $k=1,2,3,4$.
Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions via Yamanouchi toppling game
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define a solitary game, the Yamanouchi toppling game, on any connected graph of n vertices. The game arises from the well-known chip-firing game when the usual relation of equivalence defined on the set of all configurations is replaced by a suitable partial order. The set all firing sequences of length m that the player is allowed to perform in the Yamanouchi toppling game is shown to be in bijection with all standard Young tableaux whose shape is a partition of the integer m with at most n-1 parts. The set of all configurations that a player can obtain from a starting configuration is encoded in a suitable formal power series. When the graph is the simple path and each monomial of the series is replaced by a suitable Schur polynomial, we prove that such a series reduces to Hall-Littlewod symmetric polynomials. The same series provides a combinatorial description of orthogonal polynomials when the monomials are replaced by products of moments suitably modified.
