A {\em cyclic graph} is a graph with at each vertex a cyclic order of the edges incident with it specified. We characterize which real-valued functions on the collection of cubic cyclic graphs are partition functions of a real vertex model (P. de la Harpe, V.F.R. Jones, Graph invariants related to statistical mechanical models: examples and problems, Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B 57 (1993) 207--227). They are characterized by `weak reflection positivity', which amounts to the positive semidefiniteness of matrices based on the `$k$-join' of cubic cyclic graphs (for all $k\in\oZ_+$).
Basic tools are the representation theory of the symmetric group and geometric invariant theory, in particular the Hanlon-Wales theorem on the decomposition of Brauer algebras and the Procesi-Schwarz theorem on inequalities defining orbit spaces.
On the isotypic decomposition of cohomology modules of symmetric semi-algebraic sets: polynomial bounds on multiplicities

We consider symmetric (under the action of products of finite symmetric groups) real algebraic varieties and semi-algebraic sets, as well as symmetric complex varieties in affine and projective spaces, defined by polynomials of degrees bounded by a fixed constant $d$. We prove that if a Specht module, $\mathbb{S}^λ$, appears with positive multiplicity in the isotypic decomposition of the cohomology modules of such sets, then the rank of the partition $λ$ is bounded by $O(d)$. This implies a polynomial (in the dimension of the ambient space) bound on the number of such modules. Furthermore, we prove a polynomial bound on the multiplicities of those that do appear with positive multiplicity in the isotypic decomposition of the above mentioned cohomology modules.
We give some applications of our methods in proving lower bounds on the degrees of defining polynomials of certain symmetric semi-algebraic sets, as well as improved bounds on the Betti numbers of the images under projections of (not necessarily symmetric) bounded real algebraic sets, improving in certain situations prior results of Gabrielov, Vorobjov and Zell.
Lattice points and simultaneous core partitions

We observe that for a and b relatively prime, the "abacus construction" identifies the set of simultaneous (a,b)-core partitions with lattice points in a rational simplex. Furthermore, many statistics on (a,b)-cores are piecewise polynomial functions on this simplex. We apply these results to rational Catalan combinatorics.
Using Ehrhart theory, we reprove Anderson's theorem that there are (a+b-1)!/a!b! simultaneous (a,b)-cores, and using Euler-Maclaurin theory we prove Armstrong's conjecture that the average size of an (a,b)-core is (a+b+1)(a-1)(b-1)/24. Our methods also give new derivations of analogous formulas for the number and average size of self-conjugate (a,b)-cores.
We conjecture a unimodality result for q rational Catalan numbers, and make preliminary investigations in applying these methods to the (q,t)-symmetry and specialization conjectures. We prove these conjectures for low degree terms and when a=3, connecting them to the Catalan hyperplane arrangement and quadratic permutation statistics.

Balogh, Barát, Gerbner, Gyárfás, and Sárközy proposed the following conjecture. Let $G$ be a graph on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $3n/4$. Then for every $2$-edge-colouring of $G$, the vertex set $V(G)$ may be partitioned into two vertex-disjoint cycles, one of each colour. We prove that this conjecture holds for $n$ large enough, improving approximate results by the aforementioned authors and by DeBiasio and Nelsen.
Equistarable bipartite graphs

Recently, Milanič and Trotignon introduced the class of equistarable graphs as graphs without isolated vertices admitting positive weights on the edges such that a subset of edges is of total weight $1$ if and only if it forms a maximal star. Based on equistarable graphs, counterexamples to three conjectures on equistable graphs were constructed, in particular to Orlin's conjecture, which states that every equistable graph is a general partition graph.
In this paper we characterize equistarable bipartite graphs. We show that a bipartite graph is equistarable if and only if every $2$-matching of the graph extends to a matching covering all vertices of degree at least $2$. As a consequence of this result, we obtain that Orlin's conjecture holds within the class of complements of line graphs of bipartite graphs.
We also connect equistarable graphs to the triangle condition, a combinatorial condition known to be necessary (but in general not sufficient) for equistability. We show that the triangle condition implies general partitionability for complements of line graphs of forests, and construct an infinite family of triangle non-equistable graphs within the class of complements of line graphs of bipartite graphs.

Let ${{B}_{3}}(n)$ denote the number of partition triples of $n$ where each partition is 3-core. With the help of generating function manipulations, we find several infinite families of arithmetic identities and congruences for ${{B}_{3}}(n)$. Moreover, let $ω(n)$ denote the number of representations of a nonnegative integer $n$ in the form $x_{1}^{2}+x_{2}^{2}+x_{3}^{2}+3y_{1}^{2}+3y_{2}^{2}+3y_{3}^{2}$ with ${{x}_{1}},{{x}_{2}},{{x}_{3}},{{y}_{1}},{{y}_{2}},{{y}_{3}}\in \mathbb{Z}.$ We find three arithmetic relations between ${{B}_{3}}(n)$ and $ω(n)$, such as $ω(6n+5)=4{{B}_{3}}(6n+4).$
The Catalan combinatorics of the hereditary artin algebras

This is a survey on the categorification of the poset of generalized non-crossing partitions, using the representation theory of a hereditary artin algebra H, looking at the set P of exceptional subcategories in mod H. This categorification is due to Ingalls and Thomas, and a subsequent paper by Igusa and Schiffler.
Starting point is a refinement of the classical tilting theory for mod H, replacing torsion pairs by torsion triples, thus putting it into the realm of the stability theory of King. The torsion pairs in mod H correspond nicely to the perpendicular pairs of exceptional subcategories and there is a wealth of bijections, the Ingalls-Thomas bijections, between sets of modules and subcategories.
If H is representation-finite, one may look at the corresponding numbers of modules or subcategories. Such Dynkin functions (they attach to a Dynkin diagram an integer) are displayed in chapter 1. In a mysterious way, many Dynkin functions can be described using the exponents of the Weyl group. According to Shapiro and Kostant, the exponents are given by the height partition of the root poset. A recent result of Abe-Barakat-Cuntz-Hoge-Terao allows to determine them inductively, going up in a chain of ideals in the root poset, looking at the corresponding hyperplane arrangements.
Chapter 4 deals with the case of the linearly oriented quiver of Dynkin type A. Here P is identified with the lattice NC of non-crossing partitions as introduced by Kreweras (now an important tool in several parts of mathematics, for example in free probability theory). We review some classical problems which are related to the maximal chains in NC: to count labeled trees as well as parking functions. The combinatorics of the Dynkin case A is just the combinatorics of the Catalan numbers; in an appendix, we discuss the nature of classical Catalan combinatorics.
Symmetric multiple chessboard complexes and a new theorem of Tverberg type
We prove a new theorem of Tverberg type which confirms the conjecture of Blagojevic, Frick, and Ziegler about the existence of "balanced Tverberg partitions" (Conjecture 6.6 in, Tverberg plus constraints, Bull. London Math. Soc., 46 (2014) 953-967). The proof relies on the connectivity and shellability properties of multiple chessboard complexes and their symmetric analogues.

We prove a conjecture of Cuttler et al.~[2011] [A. Cuttler, C. Greene, and M. Skandera; \emph{Inequalities for symmetric means}. European J. Combinatorics, 32(2011), 745--761] on the monotonicity of \emph{normalized Schur functions} under the usual (dominance) partial-order on partitions. We believe that our proof technique may be helpful in obtaining similar inequalities for other symmetric functions.

Universal and Near-Universal Cycles of Set Partitions

We study universal cycles of the set ${\cal P}(n,k)$ of $k$-partitions of the set $[n]:=\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ and prove that the transition digraph associated with ${\cal P}(n,k)$ is Eulerian. But this does not imply that universal cycles (or ucycles) exist, since vertices represent equivalence classes of partitions! We use this result to prove, however, that ucycles of ${\cal P}(n,k)$ exist for all $n \geq 3$ when $k=2$. We reprove that they exist for odd $n$ when $k = n-1$ and that they do not exist for even $n$ when $k = n-1$. An infinite family of $(n,k)$ for which ucycles do not exist is shown to be those pairs for which $S(n-2, k-2)$ is odd ($3 \leq k < n-1$). We also show that there exist universal cycles of partitions of $[n]$ into $k$ subsets of distinct sizes when $k$ is sufficiently smaller than $n$, and therefore that there exist universal packings of the partitions in ${\cal P}(n,k)$. An analogous result for coverings completes the investigation.

We describe the algebra of invariants of the vacuum module associated with the affinization of the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{gl}(1|1)$. We give a formula for its Hilbert--Poincaré series in a fermionic (cancellation-free) form which turns out to coincide with the generating function of the plane partitions over the $(1,1)$-hook. Our arguments are based on a super version of the Beilinson--Drinfeld--Raïs--Tauvel theorem which we prove by producing an explicit basis of invariants of the symmetric algebra of polynomial currents associated with $\mathfrak{gl}(1|1)$. We identify the invariants with affine supersymmetric polynomials via a version of the Chevalley theorem.

A graph is ambiguously k-colorable if its vertex set admits two distinct partitions each into at most k anticliques. We give a full characterization of the maximally ambiguously k-colorable graphs in terms of quadratic matrices. As an application, we calculate the maximum number of edges an ambiguously k-colorable graph can have, and characterize the extremal graphs.

Free cumulants were introduced by Speicher as a proper analog of classical cumulants in Voiculescu's theory of free probability. The relation between free moments and free cumulants is usually described in terms of Moebius calculus over the lattice of non-crossing partitions. In this work we explore another approach to free cumulants and to their combinatorial study using a combinatorial Hopf algebra structure on the linear span of non-crossing partitions. The generating series of free moments is seen as a character on this Hopf algebra. It is characterized by solving a linear fixed point equation that relates it to the generating series of free cumulants. These phenomena are explained through a process similar to (though different from) the arborification process familiar in the theory of dynamical systems, and originating in Cayley's work.
A Method to construct the Sparse-paving Matroids over a Finite Set
In this work we present an algorithm to construct sparse-paving matroids over finite set $S$. From this algorithm we derive some useful bounds on the cardinality of the set of circuits of any Sparse-Paving matroids which allow us to prove in a simple way an asymptotic relation between the class of Sparse-paving matroids and the whole class of matroids. Additionally we introduce a matrix based method which render an explicit partition of the $r$-subsets of $S$, $\binom{S}{r}=\sqcup_{i=1}^{γ}\mathcal{U}_{i}$ such that each $\mathcal{U}_{i}$ defines a sparse-paving matroid of rank $r$.
Partition into heapable sequences, heap tableaux and a multiset extension of Hammersley's process

We investigate partitioning of integer sequences into heapable subsequences (previously defined and established by Mitzenmacher et al). We show that an extension of patience sorting computes the decomposition into a minimal number of heapable subsequences (MHS). We connect this parameter to an interactive particle system, a multiset extension of Hammersley's process, and investigate its expected value on a random permutation. In contrast with the (well studied) case of the longest increasing subsequence, we bring experimental evidence that the correct asymptotic scaling is $\frac{1+\sqrt{5}}{2}\cdot \ln(n)$. Finally we give a heap-based extension of Young tableaux, prove a hook inequality and an extension of the Robinson-Schensted correspondence.
A $q$-enumeration of lozenge tilings of a hexagon with four adjacent triangles removed from the boundary
MacMahon proved a simple product formula for the generating function of plane partitions fitting in a given box. The theorem implies a $q$-enumeration of lozenge tilings of a semi-regular hexagon on the triangular lattice. In this paper we generalize MacMahon's classical theorem by $q$-enumerating lozenge tilings of a new family of hexagons with four adjacent triangles removed from their boundary.

We prove the conjectured limiting normality for the number of crossings of a uniformly chosen set partition of [n] = {1,2,...,n}. The arguments use a novel stochastic representation and are also used to prove central limit theorems for the dimension index and the number of levels.

We study $ν_k(n)$, the number of partitions of $n$ into $k$ part sizes, and find numerous arithmetic progressions where $ν_2$ and $ν_3$ take on values divisible by 2 and 4. Expanding earlier work, we show $ν_2(An+B) \equiv 0 \pmod{4}$ for (A,B) = (36,30), (72,42), (252,114), (196,70), and likely many other progressions for which our method should easily generalize. Of some independent interest, we prove that the overpartition function $\bar{p}(n) \equiv 0 \pmod{16}$ in the first three progressions (the fourth is known), and thereby show that $ν_3(An+B) \equiv 0 \pmod{2}$ in each of these progressions as well, and discuss the relationship between these congruences in more generality. We end with open questions in this area.

A set partition $σ$ of $[n]=\{1,\dots,n\}$ contains another set partition $π$ if restricting $σ$ to some $S\subseteq[n]$ and then standardizing the result gives $π$. Otherwise we say $σ$ avoids $π$. For all sets of patterns consisting of partitions of $[3]$, the sizes of the avoidance classes were determined by Sagan and by Goyt. Set partitions are in bijection with restricted growth functions (RGFs) for which Wachs and White defined four fundamental statistics. We consider the distributions of these statistics over various avoidance classes, thus obtaining multivariate analogues of the previously cited cardinality results. This is the first in-depth study of such distributions. We end with a list of open problems.
