The Method of Multiple Combinatorial Telescoping
We generalize the method of combinatorial telescoping to the case of multiple summations. We shall demonstrate this idea by giving combinatorial proofs for two identities of Andrews on parity indices of partitions.

Sparse Multipartite Graphs as Partition Universal for Graphs of Bounded-Degrees
Published • View PublicationBIB
For graphs $G$ and $H$, let $G\to (H,H)$ signify that any red/blue edge coloring of $G$ contains a monochromatic $H$ as a subgraph, and $\mathcal{H}(Δ,n)=\{H:|V(H)|=n,Δ(H)\le Δ\}$. For fixed $Δ$ and $n$, we say that $G$ is a partition universal graph for $\mathcal{H}(Δ,n)$ if $G\to (H,H)$ for every $H\in\mathcal{H}(Δ,n)$. In 1983, Chvátal, Rödl, Szemerédi and Trotter proved that for any $Δ\ge2$ there exists a constant $B$ such that, for any $n$, if $N\ge Bn$ then $K_N$ is partition universal for $\mathcal{H}(Δ,n)$. Recently, Kohayakawa, Rödl, Schacht and Szemerédi proved that the complete graph $K_N$ in above result can be replaced by sparse graphs. They obtained that for fixed $Δ\ge2$, there exist constants $B$ and $C$ such that if $N\ge Bn$ and $p=C(\log N/N)^{1/Δ}$, then {\bf a.a.s.} $G(N,p)$ is partition universal graph for $\mathcal{H}(Δ,n)$, where $G(N,p)$ is the standard random graph on $N$ vertices with $\mathbb{P}(e)=p$ for each edge $e$. From some results of Bollobás and Łuczak, we know that {\bf a.a.s.} $χ(G(N,p)) = Θ((N/\log N)^{1-1/Δ})$. In this paper, we shall show that the $G(N,p)$ in above result can be replaced by random multipartite graph. Let $K_{r}(N)$ be the complete $r$-partite graph with $N$ vertices in each part, and $G_r(N,p)$ the random spanning subgraph of $K_r(N)$, in which each edge appears with probability $p$. It is shown that for fixed $Δ\ge2$ there exist constants $r, B$ and $C$ depending only on $Δ$ such that if $N\ge Bn$ and $p=C(\log N/N)^{1/Δ}$, then {\bf a.a.s.} $G_r(N,p)$ is partition universal graph for $\mathcal{H}(Δ,n)$. The proof mainly uses the sparse multipartite regularity lemma.

A Baxter class of a different kind, and other bijective results using tableau sequences ending with a row shape
Published • View PublicationBIB
Tableau sequences of bounded height have been central to the analysis of k-noncrossing set partitions and matchings. We show here that familes of sequences that end with a row shape are particularly compelling and lead to some interesting connections. First, we prove that hesitating tableaux of height at most two ending with a row shape are counted by Baxter numbers. This permits us to define three new Baxter classes which, remarkably, do not obviously possess the antipodal symmetry of other known Baxter classes. We then conjecture that oscillating tableau of height bounded by k ending in a row are in bijection with Young tableaux of bounded height 2k. We prove this conjecture for k at most eight by a generating function analysis. Many of our proofs are analytic in nature, so there are intriguing combinatorial bijections to be found.

IdentityFinder and some new identities of Rogers-Ramanujan type
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Rogers-Ramanujan identities and various analogous identities (Gordon, Andrews-Bressoud, Capparelli, etc.) form a family of very deep identities concerned with integer partitions. These identities (written in generating function form) are typically of the form "product side" equals "sum side," with the product side enumerating partitions obeying certain congruence conditions and the sum side obeying certain initial conditions and difference conditions (along with possibly other restrictions). We use symbolic computation to generate various such sum sides and then use Euler's algorithm to see which of them actually do produce elegant conjectured product sides. We not only rediscover many of the known identities but also discover some apparently new ones, as conjectures supported by strong mathematical evidence.

Asymptotics for Sparse Exponential Random Graph Models
Published in Braz. J. Probab. Stat. 31, 394-412 (2017) • View PublicationBIB
We study the asymptotics for sparse exponential random graph models where the parameters may depend on the number of vertices of the graph. We obtain exact estimates for the mean and variance of the limiting probability distribution and the limiting log partition function of the edge-(single)-star model. They are in sharp contrast to the corresponding asymptotics in dense exponential random graph models. Similar analysis is done for directed sparse exponential random graph models parametrized by edges and multiple outward stars.
Tight cycles and regular slices in dense hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study properties of random subcomplexes of partitions returned by (a suitable form of) the Strong Hypergraph Regularity Lemma, which we call regular slices. We argue that these subcomplexes capture many important structural properties of the original hypergraph. Accordingly we advocate their use in extremal hypergraph theory, and explain how they can lead to considerable simplifications in existing proofs in this field. We also use them for establishing the following two new results. Firstly, we prove a hypergraph extension of the Erdős-Gallai Theorem: for every $δ>0$ every sufficiently large $k$-uniform hypergraph with at least $(α+δ)\binom{n}{k}$ edges contains a tight cycle of length $αn$ for each $α\in[0,1]$. Secondly, we find (asymptotically) the minimum codegree requirement for a $k$-uniform $k$-partite hypergraph, each of whose parts has $n$ vertices, to contain a tight cycle of length $αkn$, for each $0<α<1$.

Query complexity of sampling and small geometric partitions
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 24 (2015) 733-753 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study the following problem: Discrete partitioning problem (DPP): Let $\mathbb{F}_q P^n$ denote the $n$-dimensional finite projective space over $\mathbb{F}_q$. For positive integer $k \leq n$, let $\{ A^i\}_{i=1}^N$ be a partition of $(\mathbb{F}_q P^n)^k$ such that (1) for all $i \leq N$, $A^i = \prod_{j=1}^k A^i_j$ (partition into product sets), (2) for all $i \leq N$, there is a $(k-1)$-dimensional subspace $L^i \subseteq \mathbb{F}_q P^n$ such that $A^i \subseteq (L^i)^k$. What is the minimum value of $N$ as a function of $q,n,k$? We will be mainly interested in the case $k=n$.
Ghost series and a motivated proof of the Andrews-Bressoud identities
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 146 (2017) 33-62 • View PublicationBIB
We present what we call a "motivated proof" of the Andrews-Bressoud partition identities for even moduli. A "motivated proof" of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities was given by G. E. Andrews and R. J. Baxter, and this proof was generalized to the odd-moduli case of Gordon's identities by J. Lepowsky and M. Zhu. Recently, a "motivated proof" of the somewhat analogous Göllnitz-Gordon-Andrews identities has been found. In the present work, we introduce "shelves" of formal series incorporating what we call "ghost series," which allow us to pass from one shelf to the next via natural recursions, leading to our motivated proof. We anticipate that these new series will provide insight into the ongoing program of vertex-algebraic categorification of the various "motivated proofs."

Bipartitions of highly connected tournaments
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that if $T$ is a strongly $10^9k^6\log(2k)$-connected tournament, there exists a partition $A, B$ of $V(T)$ such that each of $T[A]$, $T[B]$ and $T[A,B]$ is strongly $k$-connected. This provides tournament analogues of two partition conjectures of Thomassen regarding highly connected graphs.

Lax operator for Macdonald symmetric functions
Published in Letters in Mathematical Physics 105 (2015) 901-916 • View PublicationBIB
Using the Lax operator formalism, we construct a family of pairwise commuting operators such that the Macdonald symmetric functions of infinitely many variables and of two parameters $q,t$ are their eigenfunctions. We express our operators in terms of the Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions of the same variables and of the parameter $t$ corresponding to the partitions with one part only. Our expression is based on the notion of Baker-Akhiezer function.

Symmetry in maximal $(s-1,s+1)$ cores
We explain a "curious symmetry" for maximal $(s-1,s+1)$-core partitions first observed by T. Amdeberhan and E. Leven. Specifically, using the $s$-abacus, we show such partitions have empty $s$-core and that their $s$-quotient is comprised of 2-cores. This imposes strong conditions on the partition structure, and implies both the Amdeberhan-Leven result and additional symmetry. We also find a more general family that exhibits these symmetries.

On-line coloring between two lines
We study on-line colorings of certain graphs given as intersection graphs of objects "between two lines", i.e., there is a pair of horizontal lines such that each object of the representation is a connected set contained in the strip between the lines and touches both. Some of the graph classes admitting such a representation are permutation graphs (segments), interval graphs (axis-aligned rectangles), trapezoid graphs (trapezoids) and cocomparability graphs (simple curves). We present an on-line algorithm coloring graphs given by convex sets between two lines that uses $O(ω^3)$ colors on graphs with maximum clique size $ω$. In contrast intersection graphs of segments attached to a single line may force any on-line coloring algorithm to use an arbitrary number of colors even when $ω=2$. The {\em left-of} relation makes the complement of intersection graphs of objects between two lines into a poset. As an aside we discuss the relation of the class $\mathcal{C}$ of posets obtained from convex sets between two lines with some other classes of posets: all $2$-dimensional posets and all posets of height $2$ are in $\mathcal{C}$ but there is a $3$-dimensional poset of height $3$ that does not belong to $\mathcal{C}$. We also show that the on-line coloring problem for curves between two lines is as hard as the on-line chain partition problem for arbitrary posets.

Combinatoire du polynôme de Tutte et des cartes planaires
This thesis deals with the Tutte polynomial, studied from different points of view. In the first part, we address the enumeration of planar maps equipped with a spanning forest, here called forested maps, with a weight $z$ per face and a weight $u$ per non-root component of the forest. Equivalently, we count (with respect to the number of faces) the planar maps $C$ weighted by $T_C(u+1,1)$, where $T_C$ is the Tutte polynomial of $C$. We begin by a purely combinatorial characterization of the corresponding generating function, denoted by $F(z,u)$. We deduce from this that $F(z,u)$ is differentially algebraic in $z$, that is, satisfies a polynomial differential equation in $z$. Finally, for $u \geq -1$, we study the asymptotic behaviour of the $n$th coefficient of $F (z,u)$. We observe a phase transition at $0$, with a very unusual regime in $n^{-3}\ln^{-2} (n)$ for $u \in [-1,0[$, which testifies a new universality class for planar maps. In the second part, we propose a framework unifying the notions of activity used in the literature to describe the Tutte polynomial. The new notion of activity thereby defined is called $Δ$-activity. It gathers all the notions of activities that were already known and has nice properties, as Crapo's property that defines a partition of the lattice of the spanning subgraphs into intervals with respect to the activity. Lastly we conjecture that every activity that describes the Tutte polynomial and that satisfies Crapo's property can be defined in terms of $Δ$-activity.

Pairwise Balanced Designs and Sigma Clique Partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we are interested in minimizing the sum of block sizes in a pairwise balanced design, where there are some constraints on the size of one block or the size of the largest block. For every positive integers n;m, where m ? n, let S(n;m) be the smallest integer s for which there exists a PBD on n points whose largest block has size m and the sum of its block sizes is equal to s. Also, let S0(n;m) be the smallest integers for which there exists a PBD on n points which has a block of size m and the sum of it block sizes is equal to s. We prove some lower bounds for S(n;m) and S0(n;m). Moreover, we apply these bounds to determine the asymptotic behaviour of the sigma clique partition number of the graph Kn-Km, Cocktail party graphs and complement of paths and cycles.

Double Aztec Rectangles
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the connection between lozenge tilings and domino tilings by introducing a new family of regions obtained by attaching two different Aztec rectangles. We prove a simple product formula for the generating functions of the tilings of the new regions, which involves the statistics as in the Aztec diamond theorem (Elkies, Kuperberg, Larsen, and Propp, J. Algebraic Combin. 1992). Moreover, we consider the connection between the generating function and MacMahon's $q$-enumeration of plane partitions fitting in a given box

Tutte polynomial of a fractal scale-free lattice
The Tutte polynomial of a graph, or equivalently the $q$-state Potts model partition function, is a two-variable polynomial graph invariant of considerable importance in both combinatorics and statistical physics. The computation of this invariant for a graph is NP-hard in general. In this paper, based on their self-similar structures, we recursively describe the Tutte polynomials of an infinite family of scale-free lattices. Furthermore, we give some exact analytical expressions of the Tutte polynomial for several special points at $(X,Y)$-plane.

A new proof for the number of lozenge tilings of quartered hexagons

It has been proven that the lozenge tilings of a quartered hexagon on the triangular lattice are enumerated by a simple product formula. In this paper we give a new proof for the tiling formula by using Kuo's graphical condensation. Our result generalizes a Proctor's theorem on enumeration of plane partitions contained in a "maximal staircase".

Locally Convex Words and Permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce some new classes of words and permutations characterized by the second difference condition $π(i-1) + π(i+1) - 2π(i) \leq k$, which we call the $k$-convexity condition. We demonstrate that for any sized alphabet and convexity parameter $k$, we may find a generating function which counts $k$-convex words of length $n$. We also determine a formula for the number of 0-convex words on any fixed-size alphabet for sufficiently large $n$ by exhibiting a connection to integer partitions. For permutations, we give an explicit solution in the case $k = 0$ and show that the number of 1-convex and 2-convex permutations of length $n$ are $Θ(C_1^n)$ and $Θ(C_2^n)$, respectively, and use the transfer matrix method to give tight bounds on the constants $C_1$ and $C_2$. We also providing generating functions similar to the the continued fraction generating functions studied by Odlyzko and Wilf in the "coins in a fountain" problem.

Symmetric bilinear forms over finite fields with applications to coding theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $q$ be an odd prime power and let $X(m,q)$ be the set of symmetric bilinear forms on an $m$-dimensional vector space over $\mathbb{F}_q$. The partition of $X(m,q)$ induced by the action of the general linear group gives rise to a commutative translation association scheme. We give explicit expressions for the eigenvalues of this scheme in terms of linear combinations of generalised Krawtchouk polynomials. We then study $d$-codes in this scheme, namely subsets $Y$ of $X(m,q)$ with the property that, for all distinct $A,B\in Y$, the rank of $A-B$ is at least $d$. We prove bounds on the size of a $d$-code and show that, under certain conditions, the inner distribution of a $d$-code is determined by its parameters. Constructions of $d$-codes are given, which are optimal among the $d$-codes that are subgroups of $X(m,q)$. Finally, with every subset $Y$ of $X(m,q)$, we associate two classical codes over $\mathbb{F}_q$ and show that their Hamming distance enumerators can be expressed in terms of the inner distribution of $Y$. As an example, we obtain the distance enumerators of certain cyclic codes, for which many special cases have been previously obtained using long ad hoc calculations.

Equipopularity Classes in the Separable Permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
When two patterns occur equally often in a set of permutations, we say that these patterns are equipopular. Using both structural and analytic tools, we classify the equipopular patterns in the set of separable permutations. In particular, we show that the number of equipopularity classes for length $n$ patterns in the separable permutations is equal to the number of partitions of $n-1$.
