Free cumulants were introduced as the proper analog of classical cumulants in the theory of free probability. There is a mix of similarities and differences, when one considers the two families of cumulants. Whereas the combinatorics of classical cumulants is well expressed in terms of set partitions, the one of free cumulants is described, and often introduced in terms of non-crossing set partitions. The formal series approach to classical and free cumulants also largely differ. It is the purpose of the present article to put forward a different approach to these phenomena. Namely, we show that cumulants, whether classical or free, can be understood in terms of the algebra and combinatorics underlying commutative as well as non-commutative (half-)shuffles and (half-)unshuffles. As a corollary, cumulants and free cumulants can be characterized through linear fixed point equations. We study the exponential solutions of these linear fixed point equations, which display well the commutative, respectively non-commutative, character of classical, respectively free, cumulants.
Bressoud Style Identities for Regular Partitions and Overpartitions
We construct a family of partition identities which contain the following identities: Rogers-Ramanujan-Gordon identities, Bressoud's even moduli generalization of them, and their counterparts for overpartitions due to Lovejoy et al. and Chen et al. We obtain unusual companion identities to known theorems as well as to the new ones in the process. The proof is, against tradition, constructive and open to automation.
Extreme rays of the $(N, k)$-Schur Cone
We discuss several partial results towards proving Dennis White's conjecture on the extreme rays of the $(N,2)$-Schur cone. We are interested in which vectors are extreme in the cone generated by all products of Schur functions of partitions with $k$ or fewer parts. For the case where $k =2$, White conjectured that the extreme rays are obtained by excluding a certain family of "bad pairs," and proved a special case of the conjecture using Farkas' Lemma. We present an alternate proof of the special case, in addition to showing more infinite families of extreme rays and reducing White's conjecture to two simpler conjectures.
The Path Partition Conjecture is True and its Validity Yields Upper Bounds for Detour Chromatic Number and Star Chromatic Number
The detour order of a graph $G$, denoted $τ(G)$, is the order of a longest path in $G$. A partition $(A, B)$ of $V(G)$ such that $τ(\langle A \rangle) \leq a$ and $τ(\langle B \rangle) \leq b$ is called an $(a, b)$-partition of $G$. A graph $G$ is called $τ$-partitionable if $G$ has an $(a, b)$-partition for every pair $(a, b)$ of positive integers such that $a + b = τ(G)$. The well-known Path Partition Conjecture states that every graph is $τ$-partitionable. In \cite{df07} Dunber and Frick have shown that if every 2-connected graph is $τ$-partitionable then every graph is $τ$-partitionable. In this paper we show that every 2-connected graph is $τ$-partitionable. Thus, our result settles the Path Partition Conjecture affirmatively. We prove the following two theorems as the implications of the validity of the Path Partition Conjecture.\\ {\bf Theorem 1:} For every graph $G$, $χ_s(G) \leq τ(G)$, where $χ_s(G)$ is the star chromatic number of a graph $G$. The $n^{th}$ detour chromatic number of a graph $G$, denoted $χ_n(G)$, is the minimum number of colours required for colouring the vertices of $G$ such that no path of order greater than $n$ is mono coloured. These chromatic numbers were introduced by Chartrand, Gellar and Hedetniemi\cite{cg68} as a generalization of vertex chromatic number $χ(G)$.\\ {\bf Theorem 2:} For every graph $G$ and for every $n \geq 1$, $χ_n(G) \leq \left\lceil \frac{τ_n(G)}{n} \right\rceil$, where $χ_n(G)$ denote the $n^{th}$ detour chromatic number.\\ Theorem 2 settles the conjecture of Frick and Bullock \cite{fb01} that $χ_n(G) \leq \left\lceil \frac{τ(G)}{n} \right\rceil$, for every graph $G$, for every $n \geq 1$, affirmatively.
A recurrence formula for Jack connection coefficients
This article is devoted to the study of Jack connection coefficients, a generalization of the connection coefficients of the classical commutative subalgebras of the group algebra of the symmetric group closely related to the theory of Jack symmetric functions. First introduced by Goulden and Jackson (1996) these numbers indexed by three partitions of a given integer $n$ and the Jack parameter $α$ are defined as the coefficients in the power sum expansion of the Cauchy sum for Jack symmetric functions. While very little is known about them, examples of computations for small values of $n$ tend to show that the nice properties of the special cases $α=1$ (connection coefficients of the class algebra) and $α= 2$ (connection coefficients of the double coset algebra) extend to general $α$. Goulden and Jackson conjectured that Jack connection coefficients are polynomials in $β= α-1$ with non negative integer coefficients given by some statistics on matchings on a set of $2n$ elements, the so called Matchings-Jack conjecture. In this paper we look at the case when two of the integer partitions are equal to the single part $(n)$ and use a framework by Lasalle (2008) for Jack symmetric functions to show that the coefficients satisfy a simple recurrence formula that makes their computation very effective and allow a better understanding of their properties. In particular we prove the Matchings-Jack conjecture in this case. Furthermore, we provide a bijective proof of the recurrence formula for $α\in \{1,2\}$ using the combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients for these specific values of the Jack parameter. Finally we exhibit the polynomial properties of more general coefficients where the two single part partitions are replaced by an arbitrary number of integer partitions either equal to $(n)$ or $[1^{n-2}2]$.
A family of partitions of the set of walks on a directed graph
We present a family of partitions of $W_\mathcal{G}$, the set of walks on a directed graph $\mathcal{G}$. Each partition in this family is identified by an integer sequence $K$, which specifies a collection of cycles on $\mathcal{G}$ with a certain well-defined structure. We term such cycles resummable, and a walk that does not traverse any such cycles $K$-irreducible. For a given value of $K$, the corresponding partition of $W_\mathcal{G}$ consists of a collection of cells that each contain a single $K$-irreducible walk $i$ plus all walks that can be formed from $i$ by attaching one or more resummable cycles to its vertices.
We characterise the entire family of partitions of $W_\mathcal{G}$ by giving explicit expressions for the structure of the $K$-irreducible walks and the resummable cycles for arbitrary values of $K$. We demonstrate how these results can be exploited to recast the sum over all walks on a directed graph as a sum over dressed $K$-irreducible walks, and discuss the applications of this reformulation to matrix computations.
Selection Algorithms with Small Groups

We revisit the selection problem, namely that of computing the $i$th order statistic of $n$ given elements, in particular the classic deterministic algorithm by grouping and partition due to Blum, Floyd, Pratt, Rivest, and Tarjan (1973). Whereas the original algorithm uses groups of odd size at least $5$ and runs in linear time, it has been perpetuated in the literature that using smaller group sizes will force the worst-case running time to become superlinear, namely $Ω(n \log{n})$. We first point out that the usual arguments found in the literature justifying the superlinear worst-case running time fall short of proving this claim. We further prove that it is possible to use group size smaller than $5$ while maintaining the worst case linear running time. To this end we introduce three simple variants of the classic algorithm, the repeated step algorithm, the shifting target algorithm, and the hyperpair algorithm, all running in linear time.

Lehel conjectured that in every $2$-coloring of the edges of $K_n$, there is a vertex disjoint red and blue cycle which span $V(K_n)$. Łuczak, Rödl, and Szemerédi proved Lehel's conjecture for large $n$, Allen gave a different proof for large $n$, and finally Bessy and Thomassé gave a proof for all $n$.
Balogh, Barát, Gerbner, Gyárfás, and Sárközy proposed a significant strengthening of Lehel's conjecture where $K_n$ is replaced by any graph $G$ with $δ(G)> 3n/4$; if true, this minimum degree condition is essentially best possible. We prove that their conjecture holds when $δ(G)>(3/4+o(1))n$. Our proof uses Szemerédi's regularity lemma along with the absorbing method of Rödl, Ruciński, and Szemerédi by first showing that the graph can be covered with monochromatic subgraphs having certain robust expansion properties.
Décomposition monomorphe des structures relationnelles et profil de classes héréditaires
We present a structural approach of some results about jumps in the behavior of the profile (alias generating function) of hereditary classes of finite structures. We start with the following notion due to N.Thiéry and the second author. A \emph{monomorphic decomposition} of a relational structure $R$ is a partition of its domain $V(R)$ into a family of sets $(V_x)_{x\in X}$ such that the restrictions of $R$ to two finite subsets $A$ and $A'$ of $V(R)$ are isomorphic provided that the traces $A\cap V_x$ and $A'\cap V_x$ have the same size for each $x\in X$. Let $\mathscr S_μ$ be the class of relational structures of signature $μ$ which do not have a finite monomorphic decomposition. We show that if a hereditary subclass $\mathscr D$ of $\mathscr S_μ$ is made of ordered relational structures then it contains a finite subset $\mathfrak A$ such that every member of $\mathscr D$ embeds some member of $\mathfrak A$. Furthermore, for each $R\in \mathfrak A$ the profile of the age $\mathcal A(R)$ of $R$ (made of finite substructures of $R$) is at least exponential. We deduce that if the profile of a hereditary class of finite ordered structures is not bounded by a polynomial then it is at least exponential. This result is a part of classification obtained by Balogh, Bollobás and Morris (2006) for ordered graphs. {\it To cite this article: Djamila Oudrar, Maurice Pouzet, C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris, Ser. I.}
High-order Phase Transition in Random Hypergrpahs
In this paper, we study the high-order phase transition in random $r$-uniform hypergraphs. For a positive integer $n$ and a real $p\in [0,1]$, let $H:=H^r(n,p)$ be the random $r$-uniform hypergraph with vertex set $[n]$, where each $r$-set is selected as an edge with probability $p$ independently randomly. For $1\leq s \leq r-1$ and two $s$-sets $S$ and $S'$, we say $S$ is connected to $S'$ if there is a sequence of alternating $s$-sets and edges $S_0,F_1,S_1,F_2, \ldots, F_k, S_k$ such that $S_0,S_1,\ldots, S_k$ are $s$-sets, $S_0=S$, $S_k=S'$, $F_1,F_2,\ldots, F_k$ are edges of $H$, and $S_{i-1}\cup S_i\subseteq F_i$ for each $1\leq i\leq k$. This is an equivalence relation over the family of all $s$-sets ${[n]\choose s}$ and results in a partition: ${V\choose s}=\cup_i C_i$. Each $C_i$ is called an { $s$-th-order} connected component and a component $C_i$ is {\em giant} if $|C_i|=Θ(n^s)$. We prove that the sharp threshold of the existence of the $s$-th-order giant connected components in $H^r(n,p)$ is $\frac{1}{\big({r\choose s}-1\big){n\choose r-s}}$. Let $c={n\choose r-s}p$. If $c$ is a constant and $c<\tfrac{1}{\binom{r}{s}-1}$, then with high probability, all $s$-th-order connected components have size $O(\ln n)$. If $c$ is a constant and $c > \tfrac{1}{\binom{r}{s}-1}$, then with high probability, $H^r(n,p)$ has a unique giant connected $s$-th-order component and its size is $(z+o(1)){n\choose s}$, where $$z=1-\sum_{j=0}^\infty \frac{\left({r\choose s}j -j+1 \right)^{j-1}}{j!}c^je^{-c\left({r\choose s}j -j+1\right)}.$$

We evaluate the hyperpfaffian of a skew-symmetric $k$-ary polynomial $f$ of degree $k/2 \cdot (n-1)$. The result is a product of the Vandermonde product and a certain expression involving the coefficients of the polynomial $f$. The proof utilizes a sign reversing involution on a set of weighted, oriented partitions. When restricting to the classical case when $k=2$ and the polynomial is $(x_{j} - x_{i})^{n-1}$, we obtain an identity due to Torelli.

The $k$-way discrepancy $\disc_k (\C)$ of a rectangular array $\C$ of nonnegative entries is the minimum of the maxima of the within- and between-cluster discrepancies that can be obtained by simultaneous $k$-clusterings (proper partitions) of its rows and columns. In the main theorem, irrespective of the size of $\C$, we give the following estimate for the $k$th largest non-trivial singular value of the normalized table: $s_k \le 9\disc_{k } (\C ) (k+2 -9k\ln \disc_{k } (\C ))$, provided $\disc_{k } (\C ) <1$ and $k\le \rk (\C )$. This statement is the converse of Theorem 7 of Bolla \cite{Bolla14}, and the proof uses some lemmas and ideas of Butler \cite{Butler}, where only the $k=1$ case is treated, in which case our upper bound is the tighter. The result naturally extends to the singular values of the normalized adjacency matrix of a weighted undirected or directed graph.
A note on statistical averages for oscillating tableaux

We define a statistic called the weight of oscillating tableaux. Oscillating tableaux, a generalization of standard Young tableaux, are certain walks in Young's lattice of partitions. The weight of an oscillating tableau is the sum of the sizes of all the partitions that it visits. We show that the average weight of all oscillating tableaux of shape lambda and length 2n plus the size of lambda has a surprisingly simple formula: it is a quadratic polynomial in the size of lambda and n. Our proof via the theory of differential posets is largely computational. We suggest how the homomesy paradigm of Propp and Roby may lead to a more conceptual proof of this result and reveal a hidden symmetry in the set of perfect matchings.

We apply lattice point counting methods to compute the multiplicities in the plethysm of $GL(n)$. Our approach gives insight into the asymptotic growth of the plethysm and makes the problem amenable to computer algebra. We prove an old conjecture of Howe on the leading term of plethysm. For any partition $μ$ of 3,4, or 5 we obtain an explicit formula in $λ$ and $k$ for the multiplicity of $S^λ$ in $S^μ(S^k)$.
An extension of MacMahon's Equidistribution Theorem to ordered set partitions

We prove a conjecture of Haglund which can be seen as an extension of the equidistribution of the inversion number and the major index over permutations to ordered set partitions. Haglund's conjecture implicitly defines two statistics on ordered set partitions and states that they are equidistributed. The implied inversion statistic is equivalent to a statistic on ordered set partitions studied by Steingrímsson, Ishikawa, Kasraoui, and Zeng, and is known to have a nice distribution in terms of $q$-Stirling numbers. The resulting major index exhibits a combinatorial relationship between $q$-Stirling numbers and the Euler-Mahonian distribution on the symmetric group, solving a problem posed by Steingrímsson.

We establish Tracy-Widom asymptotics for the partition function of a random polymer model with gamma-distributed weights recently introduced by Seppäläinen. We show that the partition function of this random polymer can be represented within the framework of the geometric RSK correspondence and consequently its law can be expressed in terms of Whittaker functions. This leads to a representation of the law of the partition function which is amenable to asymptotic analysis. In this model, the partition function plays a role analogous to the smallest eigenvalue in the Laguerre unitary ensemble of random matrix theory.
A unifying poset perspective on alternating sign matrices, plane partitions, Catalan objects, tournaments, and tableaux

Alternating sign matrices (ASMs) are square matrices with entries 0, 1, or -1 whose rows and columns sum to 1 and whose nonzero entries alternate in sign. We present a unifying perspective on ASMs and other combinatorial objects by studying a certain tetrahedral poset and its subposets. We prove the order ideals of these subposets are in bijection with a variety of interesting combinatorial objects, including ASMs, totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions (TSSCPPs), staircase shaped semistandard Young tableaux, Catalan objects, tournaments, and totally symmetric plane partitions. We prove product formulas counting these order ideals and give the rank generating function of some of the corresponding lattices of order ideals. We also prove an expansion of the tournament generating function as a sum over TSSCPPs. This result is analogous to a result of Robbins and Rumsey expanding the tournament generating function as a sum over alternating sign matrices.
On the free Lie algebra with multiple brackets

It is a classical result that the multilinear component of the free Lie algebra is isomorphic (as a representation of the symmetric group) to the top (co)homology of the proper part of the poset of partitions $Π_n$ tensored with the sign representation. We generalize this result in order to study the multilinear component of the free Lie algebra with multiple compatible Lie brackets. We introduce a new poset of weighted partitions $Π_n^k$ that allows us to generalize the result. The new poset is a generalization of $Π_n$ and of the poset of weighted partitions $Π_n^w$ introduced by Dotsenko and Khoroshkin and studied by the author and Wachs for the case of two compatible brackets. We prove that the poset $Π_n^k$ with a top element added is EL-shellable and hence Cohen-Macaulay. This and other properties of $Π_n^k$ enable us to answer questions posed by Liu on free multibracketed Lie algebras. In particular, we obtain various dimension formulas and multicolored generalizations of the classical Lyndon and comb bases for the multilinear component of the free Lie algebra. We also obtain a plethystic formula for the Frobenius characteristic of the representation of the symmetric group on the multilinear component of the free multibracketed Lie algebra.
Glaisher combinatorics of regular partitions
Extending the notion of $r$-(class) regular partitions, we define $(r_{1},...,r_{m})$-class regular partitions. A partition identity is presented and described by making use of the Glaisher correspondence.
