Measure Partitions Using Hyperplanes with Fixed Directions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study nested partitions of $R^d$ obtained by successive cuts using hyperplanes with fixed directions. We establish the number of measures that can be split evenly simultaneously by taking a partition of this kind and then distributing the parts among $k$ sets. This generalises classical necklace splitting results and their more recent high-dimensional versions. With similar methods we show that in the plane, for any $t$ measures there is a path formed only by horizontal and vertical segments using at most $t-1$ turns that splits them by half simultaneously, and optimal mass-partitioning results for chessboard-colourings of $R^d$ using hyperplanes with fixed directions.

Unimodality of Partitions in Near-Rectangular Ferrers Diagrams
Published in Discrete Mathematics 338 (2015), pp. 1649-1658 • View PublicationBIB
We look at the rank generating function $G_λ$ of partitions inside the Ferrers diagram of some partition $λ$, investigated by Stanton in 1990, as well as a closely related problem investigated by Stanley and Zanello in 2013. We show that $G_λ$ is not unimodal for a larger class of 4-part partitions than previously known, and also that if the ratios of parts of $λ$ are close enough to 1 (depending on how many parts $λ$ has), or if the first part is at least half the size of $λ$, then $G_λ$ is unimodal.

Restricted k-color partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We generalize overpartitions to (k,j)-colored partitions: k-colored partitions in which each part size may have at most j colors. We find numerous congruences and other symmetries. We use a wide array of tools to prove our theorems: generating function dissections, modular forms, bijections, and other combinatorial maps. We find connections to divisor sums, the Han/Nekrasov-Okounkov hook length formula and a possible approach to a finitization, and other topics, suggesting that a rich mine of results is available.

Central limit theorems, Lee-Yang zeros, and graph-counting polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the asymptotic normalcy of families of random variables $X$ which count the number of occupied sites in some large set. We write $Prob(X=m)=p_mz_0^m/P(z_0)$, where $P(z)$ is the generating function $P(z)=\sum_{j=0}^{N}p_jz^j$ and $z_0>0$. We give sufficient criteria, involving the location of the zeros of $P(z)$, for these families to satisfy a central limit theorem (CLT) and even a local CLT (LCLT); the theorems hold in the sense of estimates valid for large $N$ (we assume that $Var(X)$ is large when $N$ is). For example, if all the zeros lie in the closed left half plane then $X$ is asymptotically normal, and when the zeros satisfy some additional conditions then $X$ satisfies an LCLT. We apply these results to cases in which $X$ counts the number of edges in the (random) set of "occupied" edges in a graph, with constraints on the number of occupied edges attached to a given vertex. Our results also apply to systems of interacting particles, with $X$ counting the number of particles in a box $Λ$ whose size approaches infinity; $P(z)$ is then the grand canonical partition function and its zeros are the Lee-Yang zeros.
The approximate Loebl-Komlós-Sós Conjecture II: The rough structure of LKS graphs
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math. 31, no. 2, 983-1016 (2017) • View PublicationBIB
This is the second of a series of four papers in which we prove the following relaxation of the Loebl-Komlos--Sos Conjecture: For every $α>0$ there exists a number $k_0$ such that for every $k>k_0$ every $n$-vertex graph $G$ with at least $(\frac12+α)n$ vertices of degree at least $(1+α)k$ contains each tree $T$ of order $k$ as a subgraph. In the first paper of the series, we gave a decomposition of the graph $G$ into several parts of different characteristics; this decomposition might be viewed as an analogue of a regular partition for sparse graphs. In the present paper, we find a combinatorial structure inside this decomposition. In the last two papers, we refine the structure and use it for embedding the tree $T$.
Thin Tree Position
We introduce a method for creating a special type of tree, called a tree position, from a weighted graph. Leaves of the tree correspond to vertices of the original graph, and the tree edges contain information which can be used to partition these vertices. By repeatedly applying reducing operations to the tree position we arrive at a special type of tree position we call thin, and we show that partitions arising from thin tree positions have especially nice properties. The algorithm is based the topological notion of thin position for knots and 3-manifolds and builds on the previously defined idea of a Topological Intrinsic Lexicographic Order (TILO).

Maximality of Infinite Partition Regular Matrices
A finite or infinite matrix $A$ with rational entries (and only finitely many non-zero entries in each row) is called image partition regular if, whenever the natural numbers are finitely coloured, there is a vector $x$, with entries in the natural numbers, such that $Ax$ is monochromatic. Many of the classical results of Ramsey theory are naturally stated in terms of image partition regularity. Our aim in this paper is to investigate maximality questions for image partition regular matrices. When is it possible to add rows on to $A$ and remain image partition regular? When can one add rows but `nothing new is produced'? What about adding rows and also new variables? We prove some results about extensions of the most interesting infinite systems, and make several conjectures. Perhaps our most surprising positive result is a compatibility result for Milliken-Taylor systems, stating that (in many cases) one may adjoin one Milliken-Taylor system to a translate of another and remain image partition regular. This is in contrast to earlier results, which had suggested a strong inconsistency between different Milliken-Taylor systems. Our main tools for this are some algebraic properties of the $βN$, the Stone-Cech compactification of the natural numbers.
Enumeration of idempotents in diagram semigroups and algebras
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 131 (2015), 119-152 • View PublicationBIB
We give a characterisation of the idempotents of the partition monoid, and use this to enumerate the idempotents in the finite partition, Brauer and partial Brauer monoids, giving several formulae and recursions for the number of idempotents in each monoid as well as various $\mathscr R$-, $\mathscr L$- and $\mathscr D$-classes. We also apply our results to determine the number of idempotent basis elements in the finite dimensional partition, Brauer and partial Brauer algebras.

Decomposition of bounded degree graphs into $C_4$-free subgraphs
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 44: 99-105, 2015 • View PublicationBIB
We prove that every graph with maximum degree $Δ$ admits a partition of its edges into $O(\sqrtΔ)$ parts (as $Δ\to\infty$) none of which contains $C_4$ as a subgraph. This bound is sharp up to a constant factor. Our proof uses an iterated random colouring procedure.

A special role of Boolean quadratic polytopes among other combinatorial polytopes
Published in Model. Anal. Inform. Sist., 23(1), 23-40, 2016 • View PublicationBIB
We consider several families of combinatorial polytopes associated with the following NP-complete problems: maximum cut, Boolean quadratic programming, quadratic linear ordering, quadratic assignment, set partition, set packing, stable set, 3-assignment. For comparing two families of polytopes we use the following method. We say that a family $P$ is affinely reduced to a family $Q$ if for every polytope $p\in P$ there exists $q\in Q$ such that $p$ is affinely equivalent to $q$ or to a face of $q$, where $\dim q = O((\dim p)^k)$ for some constant $k$. Under this comparison the above-mentioned families are splitted into two equivalence classes. We show also that these two classes are simpler (in the above sence) than the families of poytopes of the following problems: set covering, traveling salesman, 0-1 knapsack problem, 3-satisfiability, cubic subgraph, partial ordering. In particular, Boolean quadratic polytopes appear as faces of polytopes in every of the mentioned families.

Distance partitions of extremal and largest known circulant graphs of degree 2 to 9
This paper considers the degree-diameter problem for extremal and largest known undirected circulant graphs of degree 2 to 9 of arbitrary diameter. As these graphs are vertex transitive it is possible to define their distance partition. The number of vertices in each level of the distance partition is shown to be related to an established upper bound for the order of Abelian Cayley graphs. Furthermore these graphs are all found to have odd girth which is maximal for their diameter. Therefore the type of each vertex in a level may be well-defined by the number of adjacent vertices in the preceding level. With this definition the number of vertices of each type in each level is also shown to be related to the same Abelian Cayley graph upper bound. Finally some implications are discussed for circulant graphs of higher degree.

Quantum dilogarithms and partition q-series
Published in Communications in Mathematical Physics 2015, Volume 338, Issue 1, pp 457-481 • View PublicationBIB
In our previous work [arXiv:1403.6569], we introduced the partition q-series for mutation loop --- a loop in exchange quiver. In this paper, we show that for certain class of mutation sequences, called reverse-ending mutation loops, a graded version of partition q-series essentially coincides with the ordered product of quantum dilogarithm associated with each mutation; the partition q-series provides a state-sum description of combinatorial Donaldson-Thomas invariants introduced by B. Keller.

When Does the Set of $(a, b, c)$-Core Partitions Have a Unique Maximal Element?
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 2007, Olsson and Stanton gave an explicit form for the largest $(a, b)$-core partition, for any relatively prime positive integers $a$ and $b$, and asked whether there exists an $(a, b)$-core that contains all other $(a, b)$-cores as subpartitions; this question was answered in the affirmative first by Vandehey and later by Fayers independently. In this paper we investigate a generalization of this question, which was originally posed by Fayers: for what triples of positive integers $(a, b, c)$ does there exist an $(a, b, c)$-core that contains all other $(a, b, c)$-cores as subpartitions? We completely answer this question when $a$, $b$, and $c$ are pairwise relatively prime; we then use this to generalize the result of Olsson and Stanton.

A graph partition problem
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices, for which $m$ is it possible to partition the edge set of the $m$-fold complete graph $mK_n$ into copies of $G$? We show that there is an integer $m_0$, which we call the \emph{partition modulus of $G$}, such that the set $M(G)$ of values of $m$ for which such a partition exists consists of all but finitely many multiples of $m_0$. Trivial divisibility conditions derived from $G$ give an integer $m_1$ which divides $m_0$; we call the quotient $m_0/m_1$ the \emph{partition index of $G$}. It seems that most graphs $G$ have partition index equal to $1$, but we give two infinite families of graphs for which this is not true. We also compute $M(G)$ for various graphs, and outline some connections between our problem and the existence of designs of various types.
Enomoto and Ota's conjecture holds for large graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 2000, Enomoto and Ota conjectured that if a graph $G$ satisfies $σ_{2}(G) \geq n + k - 1$, then for any set of $k$ vertices $v_{1}, \dots, v_{k}$ and for any positive integers $n_{1}, \dots, n_{k}$ with $\sum n_{i} = |G|$, there exists a partition of $V(G)$ into $k$ paths $P_{1}, \dots, P_{k}$ such that $v_{i}$ is an end of $P_{i}$ and $|P_{i}| = n_{i}$ for all $i$. We prove this conjecture when $|G|$ is large. Our proof uses the Regularity Lemma along with several extremal lemmas, concluding with an absorbing argument to retrieve misbehaving vertices.

Lozenge tilings with free boundaries
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study lozenge tilings of a domain with partially free boundary. In particular, we consider a trapezoidal domain (half hexagon), s.t. the horizontal lozenges on the long side can intersect it anywhere to protrude halfway across. We show that the positions of the horizontal lozenges near the opposite flat vertical boundary have the same joint distribution as the eigenvalues from a Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (the GUE-corners/minors process). We also prove the existence of a limit shape of the height function, which is also a vertically symmetric plane partition. Both behaviors are shown to coincide with those of the corresponding doubled fixed-boundary hexagonal domain. We also consider domains where the different sides converge to $\infty$ at different rates and recover again the GUE-corners process near the boundary.

On Chromatic Number and Minimum Cut
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a graph $G$, the tree graph ${\cal T}_{G,t}$ has all tree subgraphs of $G$ with $t$ vertices as vertex set and two tree subgraphs are neighbors if they are edge-disjoint. Also, the $r^{th}$ cut number of $G$ is the minimum number of edges between parts of a partition of vertex set of $G$ into two parts such that each part has size at least $r$. We show that if $t=(1-o(1))n$ and $n$ is large enough, then for any dense graph $G$ with $n$ vertices, the chromatic number of the tree graph ${\cal T}_{G,t}$ is equal to the $(n-t+1)^{th}$ cut number of $G$. In particular, as a consequence, we prove that if $n$ is large enough and $G$ is a dense graph, then the chromatic number of the spanning tree graph ${\cal T}_{G,n}$ is equal to the size of the minimum cut of $G$. The proof method is based on alternating Turán number inspired by Tucker's lemma, an equivalent combinatorial version of the Borsuk-Ulam theorem.

New Descriptions of Demazure Tableaux and Right Keys, with Applications to Convexity
The right key of a semistandard Young tableau is a tool used to find Demazure characters for $sl_n(\mathbb{C})$. This thesis gives methods to obtain the right and left keys by inspection of the semistandard Young tableau. Given a partition $λ$ and a Weyl group element $w$, there is a semistandard Young tableau $Y_λ(w)$ of shape $λ$ that corresponds to $w$. The Demazure character for $λ$ and $w$ is known to be the sum of the weights of all tableaux whose right key is dominated by $Y_λ(w)$. The set of all such tableaux is denoted $\mathcal{D}_λ(w)$. Exploiting the method mentioned above for obtaining right keys, this thesis describes the entry at each location in any $T \in \mathcal{D}_λ(w)$. Lastly, we will consider $\mathcal{D}_λ(w)$ as an integral subset of Euclidean space. The final results present a condition that is both necessary and sufficient for this subset to be convex.

A note on multipivot Quicksort
Published in J. Inform. Optim. Sci. 39 (5): 1139-1147, 2018 • View PublicationBIB
We analyse a generalisation of the Quicksort algorithm, where k uniformly at random chosen pivots are used for partitioning an array of n distinct keys. Specifically, the expected cost of this scheme is obtained, under the assumption of linearity of the cost needed for the partition process. The integration constants of the expected cost are computed using Vandermonde matrices.
Super quasi-symmetric functions via Young diagrams

We consider the multivariate generating series $F_P$ of $P$-partitions in infinitely many variables $x_1, x_2 , \dots$. For some family of ranked posets $P$, it is natural to consider an analog $N_P$ with two infinite alphabets. When we collapse these two alphabets, we trivially recover $F_P$. Our main result is the converse, that is, the explicit construction of a map sending back $F_P$ onto $N_P$. We also give a noncommutative analog of the latter. An application is the construction of a basis of WQSym with a non-negative multiplication table, which lifts a basis of QSym introduced by K. Luoto.
