Universal graded characters and limit of Lusztig $q$-analogues
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let G be a symplectic or orthogonal complex Lie group with Lie algebra g. As a G-module, the decomposition of the symmetric algebra S(g) into its irreducible components can be explicitely obtained by using identities due to Littlewood. We show that the multiplicities appearing in the decomposition of the k-th graded component of S(g) do not depend on the rank n of g providing n is sufficiently large. Thanks to a classical result by Kostant, we establish a similar result for the k-th graded component of the space H(g) of G-harmonic polynomials. These stabilization properties are equivalent to the existence of a limit in infinitely many variables for the graded characters associated to S(g) and H(g). The limits so obtained are formal series with coefficients in the ring of universal characters introduced by Koike and Terada. From Hesselink expression of the graded character of harmonics, the coefficient of degree k in the Lusztig q-analogue associated to the partition lambda and the weight 0 thus stablizes for n sufficiently large. By using Morris-type recurrence formulas, we prove that this is also true for the polynomials $K_{λ,μ}^{g}(q)$ where mu is a nonempty fixed partition. This can be reformulated in terms of a stability property for the dimension of the components of the Brylinski-Kostant filtration. We also associate to each pair of partitions (lambda, mu) formal series $K_{λ,μ}^{so}(q)$ and $K_{λ,μ}^{sp}(q)$, which can be regarded as natural limit of the Lusztig q-analogues. One gives a duality property for these limits and obtains simple expressions when lambda is a row or a column partition.

Counting non-isomorphic maximal independent sets of the n-cycle graph
Published in Journal of Integer Sequences 11 (5) (2008), Article 08.5.7 • Search Publication
The number of maximal independent sets of the n-cycle graph C_n is known to be the nth term of the Perrin sequence. The action of the automorphism group of C_n on the family of these maximal independent sets partitions this family into disjoint orbits, which represent the non-isomorphic (i.e., defined up to a rotation and a reflection) maximal independent sets. We provide exact formulas for the total number of orbits and the number of orbits having a given number of isomorphic representatives. We also provide exact formulas for the total number of unlabeled (i.e., defined up to a rotation) maximal independent sets and the number of unlabeled maximal independent sets having a given number of isomorphic representatives. It turns out that these formulas involve both Perrin and Padovan sequences.

Meinardus' theorem on weighted partitions: extensions and a probabilistic proof
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a probalistic proof of the famous Meinardus' asymptotic formula for the number of weighted partitions with weakened one of the three Meinardus' conditions, and extend the resulting version of the theorem to other two classis types of decomposable combinatorial structures, which are called assemblies and selections. The results obtained are based on combining Meinardus' analytical approach with probabilistic method of Khitchine.

Covering arrays on graphs: qualitative independence graphs and extremal set partition theory
The main focus of this thesis is a generalization of covering arrays, covering arrays on graphs. Two vectors v,w in Z_k^n are qualitatively independent if for all ordered pairs (a,b) in Z_k x Z_k there is a position i in the vectors where (a,b) = (v_i,w_i). A covering array is an array with the property that any pair of rows are qualitatively independent. A covering array on a graph is an array with a row for each vertex of the graph with the property that any two rows which correspond to adjacent vertices are qualitatively independent. The addition of a graph structure to covering arrays makes it possible to use methods from graph theory to study these designs. In this thesis, we define a family of graphs called the qualitative independence graphs. A graph has a covering array, with given parameters, if and only if there is a homomorphism from the graph to a particular qualitative independence graph. Cliques in qualitative independence graphs relate to covering arrays and independent sets are connected to intersecting partition systems. It is known that the exact size of an optimal binary covering array can be determined using Sperner's Theorem and the Erdos-Ko-Rado Theorem. Since the rows of general covering arrays correspond to set partitions, we give extensions of Sperner's Theorem and the Erdos-Ko-Rado Theorem to set-partition systems. We also consider a subgraph of a general qualitative independence graph called the uniform qualitative independence graph. We give the spectra for several of these graphs and conjecture that they are graphs in an association scheme. We also give a new construction for covering arrays which yields many new upper bounds on the size of optimal covering arrays.

Ribbon tableaux, ribbon rigged configurations and Hall-Littlewood functions at roots of unity
Published • View PublicationBIB
Hall-Littlewood functions indexed by rectangular partitions, specialized at primitive roots of unity, can be expressed as plethysms. We propose a combinatorial proof of this formula using A. Schilling's bijection between ribbon tableaux and ribbon rigged configurations.
A major index for matchings and set partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a statistic $\pmaj$ on partitions of $[n]=\{1,2,..., n\}$, and show that it is equidistributed with the number of 2-crossings over partitions of $[n]$ with given sets of minimal block elements and maximal block elements. This generalizes the classical result of equidistribution for the permutation statistics inversion number and major index.

Counting descents, rises, and levels, with prescribed first element, in words
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, Kitaev and Remmel [Classifying descents according to parity, Annals of Combinatorics, to appear 2007] refined the well-known permutation statistic ``descent'' by fixing parity of one of the descent's numbers. Results in that paper were extended and generalized in several ways. In this paper, we shall fix a set partition of the natural numbers $N$, $(N_1, ..., N_t)$, and we study the distribution of descents, levels, and rises according to whether the first letter of the descent, rise, or level lies in $N_i$ over the set of words over the alphabet $[k]$. In particular, we refine and generalize some of the results in [Counting occurrences of some subword patterns, Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science 6 (2003), 001-012.].

On the number of Birch partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Birch and Tverberg partitions are closely related concepts from discrete geometry. We show two properties for the number of Birch partitions: Evenness, and a lower bound. This implies the first non-trivial lower bound for the number of Tverberg partitions that holds for arbitrary q, where q is the number of partition blocks. The proofs are based on direct arguments, and do not use the equivariant method from topological combinatorics.

Noncrossing partitions and representations of quivers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We situate the noncrossing partitions associated to a finite Coxeter group within the context of the representation theory of quivers. We describe Reading's bijection between noncrossing partitions and clusters in this context, and show that it extends to the extended Dynkin case. Our setup also yields a new proof that the noncrossing partitions associated to a finite Coxeter group form a lattice. We also prove some new results within the theory of quiver representations. We show that the finitely generated, exact abelian, and extension-closed subcategories of the representations of a quiver $Q$ without oriented cycles are in natural bijection with the cluster-tilting objects in the associated cluster category. We also show these subcategories are exactly the finitely generated categories that can be obtained as the semistable objects with respect to some stability condition.

BKP plane partitions
Published in JHEP 0701:075,2007 • View PublicationBIB
Using BKP neutral fermions, we derive a product expression for the generating function of volume-weighted plane partitions that satisfy two conditions. If we call a set of adjacent equal height-h columns, h > 0, an h-path, then 1. Every h-path can assume one of two possible colours. 2. There is a unique way to move along an h-path from any column to another.

Extension of the Bernoulli and Eulerian Polynomials of Higher Order and Vector Partition Function
Following the ideas of L. Carlitz we introduce a generalization of the Bernoulli and Eulerian polynomials of higher order to vectorial index and argument. These polynomials are used for computation of the vector partition function $W({\bf s},{\bf D})$, i.e., a number of integer solutions to a linear system ${\bf x} \ge 0, {\bf D x} = {\bf s}$. It is shown that $W({\bf s},{\bf D})$ can be expressed through the vector Bernoulli polynomials of higher order.

Binary Labelings for Plane Quadrangulations and their Relatives
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science 12:3 (2010), 115-138 • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by the bijection between Schnyder labelings of a plane triangulation and partitions of its inner edges into three trees, we look for binary labelings for quadrangulations (whose edges can be partitioned into two trees). Our labeling resembles many of the properties of Schnyder's one for triangulations: Apart from being in bijection with tree decompositions, paths in these trees allow to define the regions of a vertex such that counting faces in them yields an algorithm for embedding the quadrangulation, in this case on a~2-book. Furthermore, as Schnyder labelings have been extended to 3-connected plane graphs, we are able to extend our labeling from quadrangulations to a larger class of 2-connected bipartite graphs. Finally, we propose a binary labeling for Laman graphs.

On combinatorial problem concerning partitions of a box into boxes
Published in Journal of Natural Geometry 8 (1995), no. 2, pp. 129-132 • Search Publication
We consider partitions of n-dimensional boxes in R^n, n>1, into a finite number of boxes with pairwise disjoint interiors. We study sets X \subseteq (0,\infty) with the Property (W_n): for every n-dimensional box P and every partition of P, if each constituent box has one side with the length belonging to X, then the length of one side of P belongs to X. We prove that the set X \subseteq (0,\infty) has Property (W_n) if and only if X is closed with respect to the operations: x+y and x+y+z-2min(x,y,z).

Macdonald Polynomials and Multivariable Basic Hypergeometric Series
Published in SIGMA 3 (2007), 056, 30 pages • View PublicationBIB
We study Macdonald polynomials from a basic hypergeometric series point of view. In particular, we show that the Pieri formula for Macdonald polynomials and its recently discovered inverse, a recursion formula for Macdonald polynomials, both represent multivariable extensions of the terminating very-well-poised 6-phi-5 summation formula. We derive several new related identities including multivariate extensions of Jackson's very-well-poised 8-phi-7 summation. Motivated by our basic hypergeometric analysis, we propose an extension of Macdonald polynomials to Macdonald symmetric functions indexed by partitions with complex parts. These appear to possess nice properties.

Orbitopal Fixing
Published in Discrete Optimization 8 (2011), pp. 595-610 • View PublicationBIB
The topic of this paper are integer programming models in which a subset of 0/1-variables encode a partitioning of a set of objects into disjoint subsets. Such models can be surprisingly hard to solve by branch-and-cut algorithms if the order of the subsets of the partition is irrelevant, since this kind of symmetry unnecessarily blows up the search tree. We present a general tool, called orbitopal fixing, for enhancing the capabilities of branch-and-cut algorithms in solving such symmetric integer programming models. We devise a linear time algorithm that, applied at each node of the search tree, removes redundant parts of the tree produced by the above mentioned symmetry. The method relies on certain polyhedra, called orbitopes, which have been introduced bei Kaibel and Pfetsch (Math. Programm. A, 114 (2008), 1-36). It does, however, not explicitly add inequalities to the model. Instead, it uses certain fixing rules for variables. We demonstrate the computational power of orbitopal fixing at the example of a graph partitioning problem.

Coherent random permutations with record statistics
Published • View PublicationBIB
Random permutations with distribution conditionally uniform given the set of record values can be generated in a unified way, coherently for all values of $n$. Our central example is a two-parameter family of random permutations that are conditionally uniform given the counts of upper and lower records. This family interpolates between two versions of Ewens' distribution. We discuss characterisations of the conditionally uniform permutations, their asymptotic properties, constructions and relations to random partitions.
On double Hurwitz numbers in genus 0
Published in Adv. Math. 217 (2008), no. 1, 79-96 • View PublicationBIB
We study double Hurwitz numbers in genus zero counting the number of covers $\CP^1\to\CP^1$ with two branching points with a given branching behavior. By the recent result due to Goulden, Jackson and Vakil, these numbers are piecewise polynomials in the multiplicities of the preimages of the branching points. We describe the partition of the parameter space into polynomiality domains, called chambers, and provide an expression for the difference of two such polynomials for two neighboring chambers. Besides, we provide an explicit formula for the polynomial in a certain chamber called totally negative, which enables us to calculate double Hurwitz numbers in any given chamber as the polynomial for the totally negative chamber plus the sum of the differences between the neighboring polynomials along a path connecting the totally negative chamber with the given one.

Signed differential posets and sign-imbalance
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study signed differential posets, a signed version of differential posets. These posets satisfy enumerative identities which are signed analogues of those satisfied by differential posets. Our main motivations are the sign-imbalance identities for partition shapes originally conjectured by Stanley, now proven by Lam, Reifergerste and Sjostrand. We show that these identities result from a signed differential poset structure on Young's lattice, and explain similar identities for Fibonacci shapes.

Open boundary Quantum Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation and the weighted enumeration of Plane Partitions with symmetries
Published • View PublicationBIB
We propose new conjectures relating sum rules for the polynomial solution of the qKZ equation with open (reflecting) boundaries as a function of the quantum parameter $q$ and the $τ$-enumeration of Plane Partitions with specific symmetries, with $τ=-(q+q^{-1})$. We also find a conjectural relation à la Razumov-Stroganov between the $τ\to 0$ limit of the qKZ solution and refined numbers of Totally Symmetric Self Complementary Plane Partitions.
