On a Generalization of the van der Waerden Theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a given length and a given degree and an arbitrary partition of the positive integers, there always is a cell containing a polynomial progression of that length and that degree; moreover, the coefficients of the generating polynomial can be chosen from a given semigroup and one can prescribe the occurring powers. A multidimensional version is included.

A positivity conjecture for Jack polynomials
Published in Mathematical Research Letters 15 (2008), 661-681. • View PublicationBIB
We present a positivity conjecture for the coefficients of the development of Jack polynomials in terms of power sums. This extends Stanley's ex-conjecture about normalized characters of the symmetric group. We prove this conjecture for partitions having a rectangular shape.

The octahedron recurrence and RSK-correspondence
We start with an ``algebraic'' RSK-correspondence due to Noumi and Yamada. Given a matrix $X$, we consider a pyramidal array of solid minors of $X$. It turns out that this array satisfies an algebraic variant of octahedron recurrence. The main observation is that this array can also be constructed with the help of some square `genetic' array. Next we tropicalize this algebraic construction and consider $T$-{\em polarized} pyramidal arrays (that is arrays satisfying octahedral relations). As a result we get several bijections, viz: a) a linear bijection between non-negative arrays and supermodular functions; b) a piecewise linear bijection between supermodular functions and the so called infra-modular functions; c) a linear bijection between infra-modular functions and plane partitions. A composition of these bijections yields a bijection between non-negative arrays and plane partitions coinciding with the modified RSK-correspondence.

Rank differences for overpartitions
Published in The Quarterly Journal of Mathematics 59 (2008), 257-273 • View PublicationBIB
In 1954, Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer proved Dyson's conjectures on the rank of a partition by establishing formulas for the generating functions for rank differences in arithmetic progressions. In this paper, we prove formulas for the generating functions for rank differences for overpartitions. These are in terms of modular functions and generalized Lambert series.

Partitions weighted by the parity of the crank
Published • View PublicationBIB
A partition statistic ` crank' gives combinatorial interpretations for Ramanujan's famous partition congruences. In this paper, we establish an asymptotic formula, Ramanujan type congruences, and q-series identities that the number of partitions with even crank $M_e(n)$ minus the number of partitions with odd crank $M_o(n)$ satisfies. For example, we show that $M_e(5n+4)-M_o(5n+4)\equiv 0 \pmod 5.$ We also determine the exact values of $M_e(n)-M_o(n)$ in case of partitions into distinct parts, which are at most two and zero for infinitely many $n$.

Phase diagram of the chromatic polynomial on a torus
Published in Nucl.Phys.B783:238-296,2007 • View PublicationBIB
We study the zero-temperature partition function of the Potts antiferromagnet (i.e., the chromatic polynomial) on a torus using a transfer-matrix approach. We consider square- and triangular-lattice strips with fixed width L, arbitrary length N, and fully periodic boundary conditions. On the mathematical side, we obtain exact expressions for the chromatic polynomial of widths L=5,6,7 for the square and triangular lattices. On the physical side, we obtain the exact ``phase diagrams'' for these strips of width L and infinite length, and from these results we extract useful information about the infinite-volume phase diagram of this model: in particular, the number and position of the different phases.

Combinatoric results for graphical enumeration and the higher Catalan numbers
We summarize some combinatoric problems solved by the higher Catalan numbers. These problems are generalizations of the combinatoric problems solved by the Catalan numbers. The generating function of the higher Catalan numbers appeared recently as an auxiliary function in enumerating maps and explicit computations of the asymptotic expansion of the partition function of random matrices in the unitary ensemble case. We give combinatoric proofs of the formulas for the number of genus 0 and genus 1 maps.

Quantum Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov Equation, Totally Symmetric Self-Complementary Plane Partitions and Alternating Sign Matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present multiresidue formulae for partial sums in the basis of link patterns of the polynomial solution to the level 1 U_q(\hat sl_2) quantum Knizhnik--Zamolodchikov equation at generic values of the quantum parameter q. These allow for rewriting and generalizing a recent conjecture [Di Francesco '06] connecting the above to generating polynomials for weighted Totally Symmetric Self-Complementary Plane Partitions. We reduce the corresponding conjectures to a single integral identity, yet to be proved.

Partitioning the Sample Space on Five Taxa for the Neighbor Joining Algorithm
In this paper, we will analyze the behavior of the Neighbor Joining algorithm on five taxa and we will show that the partition of the sample (data) space for estimation of a tree topology with five taxa into subspaces, within each of which the Neighbor Joining algorithm returns the same tree topology. A key of our method to partition the sample space is the action of the symmetric group $S_5$ on the set of distance matrices by changing the labels of leaves. The method described in this paper can be generalized to trees with more than five taxa.

On growth rates of permutations, set partitions, ordered graphs and other objects
Published • View PublicationBIB
For classes O of structures on finite linear orders (permutations, ordered graphs etc.) endowed with containment order cont (containment of permutations, subgraph relation etc.), we investigate restrictions on the function f(n) counting objects with size n in a lower ideal in (O, cont). We present a framework of edge P-colored complete graphs (C(P), cont) which includes many of these situations, and we prove for it two such restrictions (jumps in growth): f(n) is eventually constant or f(n) >= n for all n>0; f(n)<n^c for all n>0 for a constant c>0 or f(n) >= F_n for all n>0, F_n being the Fibonacci numbers. This generalizes a fragment of a more detailed theorem of Balogh, Bollobas and Morris on hereditary properties of ordered graphs.

Rigidity and volume preserving deformation on degenerate simplices
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a degenerate $(n+1)$-simplex in a $d$-dimensional space $M^d$ (Euclidean, spherical or hyperbolic space, and $d\geq n$), for each $k$, $1\leq k\leq n$, Radon's theorem induces a partition of the set of $k$-faces into two subsets. We prove that if the vertices of the simplex vary smoothly in $M^d$ for $d=n$, and the volumes of $k$-faces in one subset are constrained only to decrease while in the other subset only to increase, then any sufficiently small motion must preserve the volumes of all $k$-faces; and this property still holds in $M^d$ for $d\geq n+1$ if an invariant $c_{k-1}(α^{k-1})$ of the degenerate simplex has the desired sign. This answers a question posed by the author, and the proof relies on an invariant $c_k(ω)$ we discovered for any $k$-stress $ω$ on a cell complex in $M^d$. We introduce a characteristic polynomial of the degenerate simplex by defining $f(x)=\sum_{i=0}^{n+1}(-1)^{i}c_i(α^i)x^{n+1-i}$, and prove that the roots of $f(x)$ are real for the Euclidean case. Some evidence suggests the same conjecture for the hyperbolic case.

Shifted Schur process and asymptotics of large random strict plane partitions
Published in Int. Math. Res. Notices (2007), Vol 2007, article ID rnm043, 53 pages • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we define the shifted Schur process as a measure on sequences of strict partitions. This process is a generalization of the shifted Schur measure introduced in [TW] and [Mat] and is a shifted version of the Schur process introduced in [OR]. We prove that the shifted Schur process defines a Pfaffian point process. We further apply this fact to compute the bulk scaling limit of the correlation functions for a measure on strict plane partitions which is an analog of the uniform measure on ordinary plane partitions. As a byproduct, we obtain a shifted analog of the famous MacMahon's formula.
Convex Rank Tests and Semigraphoids
Published • View PublicationBIB
Convex rank tests are partitions of the symmetric group which have desirable geometric properties. The statistical tests defined by such partitions involve counting all permutations in the equivalence classes. Each class consists of the linear extensions of a partially ordered set specified by data. Our methods refine existing rank tests of non-parametric statistics, such as the sign test and the runs test, and are useful for exploratory analysis of ordinal data. We establish a bijection between convex rank tests and probabilistic conditional independence structures known as semigraphoids. The subclass of submodular rank tests is derived from faces of the cone of submodular functions, or from Minkowski summands of the permutohedron. We enumerate all small instances of such rank tests. Of particular interest are graphical tests, which correspond to both graphical models and to graph associahedra.

Hereditary properties of partitions, ordered graphs and ordered hypergraphs
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics (special edition, eds. M. Krivelevich and B. Sudakov), 8 (2006), 1263-1281 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we use the Klazar-Marcus-Tardos method to prove that if a hereditary property of partitions P has super-exponential speed, then for every k-permutation pi, P contains the partition of [2k] with parts {i, pi(i) + k}, where 1 <= i <= k. We also prove a similar jump, from exponential to factorial, in the possible speeds of monotone properties of ordered graphs, and of hereditary properties of ordered graphs not containing large complete, or complete bipartite ordered graphs. Our results generalize the Stanley-Wilf Conjecture on the number of n-permutations avoiding a fixed permutation, which was recently proved by the combined results of Klazar and of Marcus and Tardos. Our main results follow from a generalization to ordered hypergraphs of the theorem of Marcus and Tardos.

Three combinatorial models for affine sl(n) crystals, with applications to cylindric plane partitions
Published in Math. Res. Not. IMRN 2008(2):Art. ID rnm143, 40, 2008 • View PublicationBIB
We define three combinatorial models for \hat{sl(n)} crystals, parametrized by partitions, configurations of beads on an `abacus', and cylindric plane partitions, respectively. These are reducible, but we can identify an irreducible subcrystal corresponding to any dominant integral highest weight. Cylindric plane partitions actually parametrize a basis for the tensor product of an irreducible representation with the space spanned by all partitions. We use this to calculate the partition function for a system of random cylindric plane partitions. We also observe a form of rank level duality. Finally, we use an explicit bijection to relate our work to the Kyoto path model.
Monochromatic triangles in two-colored plane
Published in Combinatorica 29 (2009), Issue 6, 699-718 • View PublicationBIB
We prove that for any partition of the plane into a closed set $C$ and an open set $O$ and for any configuration $T$ of three points, there is a translated and rotated copy of $T$ contained in $C$ or in $O$. Apart from that, we consider partitions of the plane into two sets whose common boundary is a union of piecewise linear curves. We show that for any such partition and any configuration $T$ which is a vertex set of a non-equilateral triangle there is a copy of $T$ contained in the interior of one of the two partition classes. Furthermore, we give the characterization of these "polygonal" partitions that avoid copies of a given equilateral triple. These results support a conjecture of Erdos, Graham, Montgomery, Rothschild, Spencer and Straus, which states that every two-coloring of the plane contains a monochromatic copy of any nonequilateral triple of points; on the other hand, we disprove a stronger conjecture by the same authors, by providing non-trivial examples of two-colorings that avoid a given equilateral triple.
Convergent Sequences of Dense Graphs I: Subgraph Frequencies, Metric Properties and Testing
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider sequences of graphs and define various notions of convergence related to these sequences: ``left convergence'' defined in terms of the densities of homomorphisms from small graphs into the graphs of the sequence, and ``right convergence'' defined in terms of the densities of homomorphisms from the graphs of the sequence into small graphs; and convergence in a suitably defined metric. In Part I of this series, we show that left convergence is equivalent to convergence in metric, both for simple graphs, and for graphs with nodeweights and edgeweights. One of the main steps here is the introduction of a cut-distance comparing graphs, not necessarily of the same size. We also show how these notions of convergence provide natural formulations of Szemeredi partitions, sampling and testing of large graphs.

Osculating Paths and Oscillating Tableaux
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 15 (2008) Research Paper 7 • View PublicationBIB
The combinatorics of certain osculating lattice paths is studied, and a relationship with oscillating tableaux is obtained. More specifically, the paths being considered have fixed start and end points on respectively the lower and right boundaries of a rectangle in the square lattice, each path can take only unit steps rightwards or upwards, and two different paths are permitted to share lattice points, but not to cross or share lattice edges. Such paths correspond to configurations of the six-vertex model of statistical mechanics with appropriate boundary conditions, and they include cases which correspond to alternating sign matrices and various subclasses thereof. Referring to points of the rectangle through which no or two paths pass as vacancies or osculations respectively, the case of primary interest is tuples of paths with a fixed number $l$ of vacancies and osculations. It is then shown that there exist natural bijections which map each such path tuple $P$ to a pair $(t,η)$, where $η$ is an oscillating tableau of length $l$ (i.e., a sequence of $l+1$ partitions, starting with the empty partition, in which the Young diagrams of successive partitions differ by a single square), and $t$ is a certain, compatible sequence of $l$ weakly increasing positive integers. Furthermore, each vacancy or osculation of $P$ corresponds to a partition in $η$ whose Young diagram is obtained from that of its predecessor by respectively the addition or deletion of a square. These bijections lead to enumeration formulae for osculating paths involving sums over oscillating tableaux.
Transitive Group Actions: (IM)PRIMITIVITY and Semiregular Subgroups
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, 2014 • Search Publication
The following problem is considered: if $H$ is a semiregular abelian subgroup of a transitive permutation group $G$ acting on a finite set $X$, find conditions for (non) existence of $G$-invariant partitions of $X$. Conditions presented in this paper are derived by studying spectral properties of associated $G$-invariant digraphs. As an essential tool, irreducible complex characters of $H$ are used. Questions of this kind arise naturally when classifying combinatorial objects which enjoy a certain degree of symmetry. As an illustration, a new and short proof of an old result of Frucht, Graver and Watkins ({\it Proc. Camb. Phil. Soc.}, {\bf 70} (1971), 211-218) classifying edge-transitive generalized Petersen graphs, is given.
