Generalized Noncrossing Partitions and Combinatorics of Coxeter Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
This memoir constitutes the author's PhD thesis at Cornell University. It serves both as an expository work and as a description of new research. At the heart of the memoir, we introduce and study a poset $NC^{(k)}(W)$ for each finite Coxeter group $W$ and for each positive integer $k$. When $k=1$, our definition coincides with the generalized noncrossing partitions introduced by Brady-Watt and Bessis. When $W$ is the symmetric group, we obtain the poset of classical $k$-divisible noncrossing partitions, first studied by Edelman. Along the way, we include a comprehensive introduction to related background material. Before defining our generalization $NC^{(k)}(W)$, we develop from scratch the theory of algebraic noncrossing partitions $NC(W)$. This involves studying a finite Coxeter group $W$ with respect to its generating set $T$ of {\em all} reflections, instead of the usual Coxeter generating set $S$. This is the first time that this material has appeared in one place. Finally, it turns out that our poset $NC^{(k)}(W)$ shares many enumerative features in common with the ``generalized nonnesting partitions'' of Athanasiadis and the ``generalized cluster complexes'' of Fomin and Reading. In particular, there is a generalized ``Fuss-Catalan number'', with a nice closed formula in terms of the invariant degrees of $W$, that plays an important role in each case. We give a basic introduction to these topics, and we describe several conjectures relating these three families of ``Fuss-Catalan objects''.

Colored posets and colored quasisymmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The colored quasisymmetric functions, like the classic quasisymmetric functions, are known to form a Hopf algebra with a natural peak subalgebra. We show how these algebras arise as the image of the algebra of colored posets. To effect this approach we introduce colored analogs of $P$-partitions and enriched $P$-partitions. We also frame our results in terms of Aguiar, Bergeron, and Sottile's theory of combinatorial Hopf algebras and its colored analog.

Interpreting the two variable Distance enumerator of the Shi hyperplane arrangement
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give an interpretation of the coefficients of the two variable refinement $D_{\Sh_n}(q,t)$ of the distance enumerator of the Shi hyperplane arrangement $\Sh_n$ in $n$ dimensions. This two variable refinement was defined by Stanley \cite{stan-rota} for the general $r$-extended Shi hyperplane arrangements. We give an interpretation when $r=1$. We define three natural three-dimensional partitions of the number $(n+1)^{n-1}$. The first arises from parking functions of length $n$, the second from special posets on $n$ vertices defined by Athanasiadis and the third from spanning trees on $n+1$ vertices. We call the three partitions as the parking partition, the tree-poset partition and the spanning-tree partition respectively. We show that one of the parts of the parking partition is identical to the number of edge-labelled trees with label set $\{1,2,...,n\}$ on $n+1$ unlabelled vertices. We prove that the parking partition majorises the tree-poset partition and conjecture that the spanning-tree partition also majorises the tree-poset partition.

The 6 Vertex Model and Schubert Polynomials
Published in SIGMA 3(2007) (24/02/2007) 029, 12 pages • View PublicationBIB
We enumerate staircases with fixed left and right columns. These objects correspond to ice-configurations, or alternating sign matrices, with fixed top and bottom parts. The resulting partition functions are equal, up to a normalization factor, to some Schubert polynomials.
Restricted Dumont permutations, Dyck paths, and noncrossing partitions
Published in Discrete Mathematics 306 (2006), 2851 to 2869 • View PublicationBIB
We complete the enumeration of Dumont permutations of the second kind avoiding a pattern of length 4 which is itself a Dumont permutation of the second kind. We also consider some combinatorial statistics on Dumont permutations avoiding certain patterns of length 3 and 4 and give a natural bijection between 3142-avoiding Dumont permutations of the second kind and noncrossing partitions that uses cycle decomposition, as well as bijections between 132-, 231- and 321-avoiding Dumont permutations and Dyck paths. Finally, we enumerate Dumont permutations of the first kind simultaneously avoiding certain pairs of 4-letter patterns and another pattern of arbitrary length.

Asymptotics of abelian group-partitions and associated Dirichlet series
We introduce a notion of a group-partition for a finite Abelian group, which is a generalized notion of the standard partition. To obtain asymptoticdistributions of group-partition, we study the Dirichlet series for group-partitions by employing the generating function of the plane partition.

Subgraph posets and graph reconstruction
We consider 3 (weighted) posets associated with a graph G - the poset P(G) of distinct induced unlabelled subgraphs, the lattice Omega(G) of distinct unlabelled graphs induced by connected partitions, and the poset Q(G) of distinct unlabelled edge-subgraphs. We study these posets given up to isomorphism, and their relation to the reconstruction conjectures. We show that when G is not a star or a disjoint union of edges, P(G) and Omega(G) can be constructed from each other. The result implies that trees are reconstructible from their abstract bond lattice. We present many results on the reconstruction questions about the chromatic symmetric function and the symmetric Tutte polynomial. In particular, we show that the symmetric Tutte polynomial of a tree can be constructed from its chromatic symmetric function. We classify graphs that are not reconstructible from their abstract edge-subgraph posets, and further show that the families presented here are the only graphs not Q-reconstructible if and only if the edge reconstruction conjecture is true. Let f be a bijection from the set of all unlabelled graphs to itself such that for all unlabelled graphs G and H, hom(G,H) = hom(f(G), f(H)). We conjecture that f is an identity map. We show that this conjecture is weaker than the edge reconstruction conjecture. Our conjecture is motivated by homomorphism cancellation results due to Lovász.

Tetromino tilings and the Tutte polynomial
Published in Journal of Physics A Mathematical and Theoretical 40 (2007) 1439-1446 • View PublicationBIB
We consider tiling rectangles of size 4m x 4n by T-shaped tetrominoes. Each tile is assigned a weight that depends on its orientation and position on the lattice. For a particular choice of the weights, the generating function of tilings is shown to be the evaluation of the multivariate Tutte polynomial Z\_G(Q,v) (known also to physicists as the partition function of the Q-state Potts model) on an (m-1) x (n-1) rectangle G, where the parameter Q and the edge weights v can take arbitrary values depending on the tile weights.

Monomial and toric ideals associated to Ferrers graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Each partition $λ= (λ_1, λ_2, ..., λ_n)$ determines a so-called Ferrers tableau or, equivalently, a Ferrers bipartite graph. Its edge ideal, dubbed Ferrers ideal, is a squarefree monomial ideal that is generated by quadrics. We show that such an ideal has a 2-linear minimal free resolution, i.e. it defines a small subscheme. In fact, we prove that this property characterizes Ferrers graphs among bipartite graphs. Furthermore, using a method of Bayer and Sturmfels, we provide an explicit description of the maps in its minimal free resolution: This is obtained by associating a suitable polyhedral cell complex to the ideal/graph. Along the way, we also determine the irredundant primary decomposition of any Ferrers ideal. We conclude our analysis by studying several features of toric rings of Ferrers graphs. In particular we recover/establish formulae for the Hilbert series, the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity, and the multiplicity of these rings. While most of the previous works in this highly investigated area of research involve path counting arguments, we offer here a new and self-contained approach based on results from Gorenstein liaison theory.
Decompositions of the free product of graphs
Published in Infin. Dimens. Anal. Quantum Probab. Relat. Top., Vol. 10, No.3 (2007), 303-334 • View PublicationBIB
We study the free product of rooted graphs and its various decompositions using quantum probabilistic methods. We show that the free product of rooted graphs is canonically associated with free independence, which completes the proof of the conjecture that there exists a product of rooted graphs canonically associated with each notion of noncommutative independence which arises in the axiomatic theory. Using the `orthogonal product' of rooted graphs, we decompose the branches of the free product of rooted graphs as `alternating orthogonal products'. This leads to alternating decompositions of the free product itself, with the star product or the comb product followed by orthogonal products. These decompositions correspond to the recently studied decompositions of the free additive convolution of probability measures in terms boolean and orthogonal convolutions, or monotone and orthogonal convolutions. We also introduce a new type of `quantum decomposition' of the free product of graphs, where the distance partition of the set of vertices is taken with respect to a set of vertices instead of a single vertex. We show that even in the case of widely studied graphs this yields new and more complete information on their spectral properties, like spectral measures of a (usually infinite) set of cyclic vectors under the action of the adjacency matrix.

A note on exponents vs root heights for complex simple Lie algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give an elementary combinatorial proof of a special case of a result due to Bazlov and Ion concerning the Fourier coefficients of the Cherednik kernel. This can be used to give yet another proof of the classical fact that for a complex simple Lie algebra, the partition formed by its exponents is dual to that formed by the numbers of positive roots at each height.

P-partition products and fundamental quasi-symmetric function positivity
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that certain differences of products of $P$-partition generating functions are positive in the basis of fundamental quasi-symmetric functions L_α. This result interpolates between recent Schur positivity and monomial positivity results of the same flavor. We study the case of chains in detail, introducing certain ``cell transfer'' operations on compositions and an interesting related ``L-positivity'' poset. We introduce and study quasi-symmetric functions called ``wave Schur functions'' and use them to establish, in the case of chains, that the difference of products we study is itself equal to a single generating function K_{P,θ} for a labeled poset (P,θ). In the course of our investigations we establish some factorization properties of the ring of quasisymmetric functions.

Counting Partitions on the Abacus
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 2003, Maroti showed that one could use the machinery of l-cores and l-quotients of partitions to establish lower bounds for p(n), the number of partitions of n. In this paper we explore these ideas in the case l=2, using them to give a largely combinatorial proof of an effective upper bound on p(n), and to prove asymptotic formulae for the number of self-conjugate partitions, and the number of partitions with distinct parts. In a further application we give a combinatorial proof of an identity originally due to Gauss.

Linear and Circular Permutations with Limited Number of Repetitions
The problem of linear and circular permutations of n identical objects in m boxes, where a limit l is imposed on the number of objects in a box, is considered. In the linear case, where the boxes are arranged as a row, two methods of solution are described. The first uses the partition diagram that is modified with prescribed number of zeros, and the second applies a direct combinatorial approach. Subject to constraints set on the relation between n and l, results of the combinatorial approach are used to solve the problem where there are more than one type of objects. These solutions are then extended for the case of boxes comprising subgroups that are characterized by different values of l. In the circular case, where the boxes are arranged in the form of a circle, no direct combinatorial solution in close form is available. Consequently, in the latter case, the solution relies on the use of the modified partition diagram. This solution, which involves the application of multinomial permutations on a circle, is also extended to the case of two kinds of objects.

Multiple partitions, lattice paths and a Burge-Bressoud-type correspondence
Published • View PublicationBIB
A bijection is presented between (1): partitions with conditions $f_j+f_{j+1}\leq k-1$ and $ f_1\leq i-1$, where $f_j$ is the frequency of the part $j$ in the partition, and (2): sets of $k-1$ ordered partitions $(n^{(1)}, n^{(2)}, ..., n^{(k-1)})$ such that $n^{(j)}_\ell \geq n^{(j)}_{\ell+1} + 2j$ and $ n^{(j)}_{m_j} \geq j+ {\rm max} (j-i+1,0)+ 2j (m_{j+1}+... + m_{k-1})$, where $m_j$ is the number of parts in $n^{(j)}$. This bijection entails an elementary and constructive proof of the Andrews multiple-sum enumerating partitions with frequency conditions. A very natural relation between the $k-1$ ordered partitions and restricted paths is also presented, which reveals our bijection to be a modification of Bressoud's version of the Burge correspondence.
Eigenvalue amplitudes of the Potts model on a torus
Published in Nuclear Physics B 769 (2007) 256-274 • View PublicationBIB
We consider the Q-state Potts model in the random-cluster formulation, defined on finite two-dimensional lattices of size L x N with toroidal boundary conditions. Due to the non-locality of the clusters, the partition function Z(L,N) cannot be written simply as a trace of the transfer matrix T\_L. Using a combinatorial method, we establish the decomposition Z(L,N) = \sum\_{l,D\_k} b^{l,D\_k} K\_{l,D\_k}, where the characters K\_{l,D\_k} = \sum\_i (λ\_i)^N are simple traces. In this decomposition, the amplitudes b^{l,D\_k} of the eigenvalues λ\_i of T\_L are labelled by the number l=0,1,...,L of clusters which are non-contractible with respect to the transfer (N) direction, and a representation D\_k of the cyclic group C\_l. We obtain rigorously a general expression for b^{l,D\_k} in terms of the characters of C\_l, and, using number theoretic results, show that it coincides with an expression previously obtained in the continuum limit by Read and Saleur.

A note on quantum products of Schubert classes in a Grassmannian
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given two Schubert classes $σ_λ$ and $σ_μ$ in the quantum cohomology of a Grassmannian, we construct a partition $ν$, depending on $λ$ and $μ$, such that $σ_ν$ appears with coefficient 1 in the lowest (or highest) degree part of the quantum product $σ_λ\starσ_μ$. To do this, we show that for any two partitions $λ$ and $μ$, contained in a $k$-by-$(n-k)$ rectangle and such that the 180-degree rotation of one does not overlap the other, there is a third partition $ν$, also contained in the rectangle, such that the Littlewood-Richardson number $c_{λμ}^ν$ is 1.

Boundary Partitions in Trees and Dimers
Published in Trans.Am.Math.Soc.363:1325-1364, 2011 • View PublicationBIB
Given a finite planar graph, a grove is a spanning forest in which every component tree contains one or more of a specified set of vertices (called nodes) on the outer face. For the uniform measure on groves, we compute the probabilities of the different possible node connections in a grove. These probabilities only depend on boundary measurements of the graph and not on the actual graph structure, i.e., the probabilities can be expressed as functions of the pairwise electrical resistances between the nodes, or equivalently, as functions of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator (or response matrix) on the nodes. These formulae can be likened to generalizations (for spanning forests) of Cardy's percolation crossing probabilities, and generalize Kirchhoff's formula for the electrical resistance. Remarkably, when appropriately normalized, the connection probabilities are in fact integer-coefficient polynomials in the matrix entries, where the coefficients have a natural algebraic interpretation and can be computed combinatorially. A similar phenomenon holds in the so-called double-dimer model: connection probabilities of boundary nodes are polynomial functions of certain boundary measurements, and as formal polynomials, they are specializations of the grove polynomials. Upon taking scaling limits, we show that the double-dimer connection probabilities coincide with those of the contour lines in the Gaussian free field with certain natural boundary conditions. These results have direct application to connection probabilities for multiple-strand SLE_2, SLE_8, and SLE_4.

Poisson representation of a Ewens fragmentation process
Published • View PublicationBIB
A simple explicit construction is provided of a partition-valued fragmentation process whose distribution on partitions of $[n]=\{1,...,n\}$ at time $θ\ge 0$ is governed by the Ewens sampling formula with parameter $θ$. These partition-valued processes are exchangeable and consistent, as $n$ varies. They can be derived by uniform sampling from a corresponding mass fragmentation process defined by cutting a unit interval at the points of a Poisson process with intensity $θx^{-1} \diff x$ on ${\mathbb R}_+$, arranged to be intensifying as $θ$ increases.

The Combinatorics of Quiver Representations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a description of faces of all codimensions for the cones of weights of rings of semi-invariants of quivers. For a triple flag quiver and faces of codimension 1 this reduces to the result of Knutson-Tao-Woodward on the facets of the Klyachko cone. We give new applications to Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, including a product formula for LR-coefficients corresponding to triples of partitions lying on a wall of the Klyachko cone. We systematically review and develop the necessary methods (exceptional and Schur sequences, orthogonal categories, semi-stable decompositions, GIT quotients for quivers). In the Appendix we include a version of Belkale's geometric proof of Fulton's conjecture that works for arbitrary quivers.
