On refined enumerations of totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions II
In this paper we settle a weak version of a conjecture (i.e. Conjecture 6) by Mills, Robbins and Rumsey in the paper "Self-complementary totally symmetric plane partitions" (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 42, 277-292). In other words we show that the number of shifted plane partitions invariant under an involution is equal to the number of alternating sign matrices invariant under the vertical flip. We also give a determinantal formula for the general conjecture (Conjecture 6), but this determinant is still hard to evaluate. In this paper we introduce two new classes of domino plane partitions, one has the same cardinality as the set of half-turn symmetric alternating sign matrices and the other has the same cardinality as the set of vertically symmetric alternating sign matrices.

In this paper we derive a hierarchy of differential equations which uniquely determine the coefficients in the asymptotic expansion, for large $N$, of the logarithm of the partition function of $N \times N$ Hermitian random matrices. These coefficients are generating functions for graphical enumeration on Riemann surfaces. The case that we particularly consider is for an underlying measure that differs from the Gaussian weight by a single monomial term of degree $2ν$. The coupling parameter for this term plays the role of the independent dynamical variable in the differential equations. From these equations one may deduce functional analytic characterizations of the coefficients in the asymptotic expansion. Moreover, this ode system can be solved recursively to explicitly construct these coefficients as functions of the coupling parameter. This analysis of the fine structure of the asymptotic coefficients can be extended to multiple coupling parameters and we present a limited illustration of this for the case of two parameters.

Let $Φ$ be a finite root system of rank $n$ and let $m$ be a nonnegative integer. The generalized cluster complex $Δ^m (Φ)$ was introduced by S. Fomin and N. Reading. It was conjectured by these authors that $Δ^m (Φ)$ is shellable and by V. Reiner that it is $(m+1)$-Cohen-Macaulay, in the sense of Baclawski. These statements are proved in this paper. Analogous statements are shown to hold for the positive part $Δ^m_+ (Φ)$ of $Δ^m (Φ)$. An explicit homotopy equivalence is given between $Δ^m_+ (Φ)$ and the poset of generalized noncrossing partitions, associated to the pair $(Φ, m)$ by D. Armstrong.

Let $Φ$ be an finite root system with corresponding reflection group $W$ and let $m$ be a nonnegative integer. We consider the generalized cluster complex $Δ^m(Φ)$ defined by S. Fomin and N. Reading and the poset $NC_{(m)}(W)$ of $m$-divisible noncrossing partitions defined by D. Armstrong. We give a characterization of the faces of $Δ^m(Φ)$ in terms of $NC_{(m)}(W)$, generalizing that of T. Brady and C. Watt given in the case $m=1$. Making use of this, we give a case free proof of a conjecture of F. Chapoton and D. Armstrong, which relates a certain refined face count of $Δ^m(Φ)$ with the Möbius function of $NC_{(m)}(W)$.
Five Guidelines for Partition Analysis with Applications to Lecture Hall-type Theorems

Five simple guidelines are proposed to compute the generating function for the nonnegative integer solutions of a system of linear inequalities. In contrast to other approaches, the emphasis is on deriving recurrences. We show how to use the guidelines strategically to solve some nontrivial enumeration problems in the theory of partitions and compositions. This includes a strikingly different approach to lecture hall-type theorems, with new $q$-series identities arising in the process. For completeness, we prove that the guidelines suffice to find the generating function for any system of homogeneous linear inequalities with integer coefficients. The guidelines can be viewed as a simplification of MacMahon's partition analysis with ideas from matrix techiniques, Elliott reduction, and ``adding a slice''.
Statistics on ordered partitions of sets
We introduce several statistics on ordered partitions of sets, that is, set partitions where the blocks are permuted arbitrarily. The distribution of these statistics is closely related to the q-Stirling numbers of the second kind. Some of the statistics are generalizations of known statistics on set partitions, but others are entirely new. All the new ones are sums of two statistics, inspired by statistics on permutations, where one of the two statistics is based on a certain partial ordering of the blocks of a partition.
Constructing all irreducible Specht modules in a block of the symmetric group
For any prime p, we construct, and simultaneously count, all of the complex Specht modules in a given p-block of the symmetric group which remain irreducible when reduced modulo p. We call the Specht modules with this property p-irreducible modules. Recently Fayers has proven a conjecture of James and Mathas that provides a characterization of the partitions that correspond to the p-irreducible modules. In this paper we present a method for decomposing the partitions corresponding to p-irreducible modules, and we use this decomposition to construct and count all of the partitions corresponding to p-irreducible Specht modules in a given block.

A lattice-path description of $K$-restricted jagged partitions is presented. The corresponding lattice paths can have peaks only at even $x$ coordinate and the maximal value of the height cannot be larger than $K-1$. Its weight is twice that of the corresponding jagged partitions. The equivalence is demonstrated at the level of generating functions. A bijection is given between $K$-restricted jagged partitions and partitions restricted by the following frequencies conditions: $f_{2j-1}$ is even and $f_j+f_{j+1}\leq K-1$, where $f_j$ is the number of occurrences of the part $j$ in the partition. Bijections are given between paths and these restricted partitions and between paths and partitions with successive ranks in a prescribed interval.

We find the number of partitions of $n$ whose BG-rank is $j$, in terms of $pp(n)$, the number of pairs of partitions whose total number of cells is $n$, giving both bijective and generating function proofs. Next we find congruences mod 5 for $pp(n)$, and then we use these to give a new proof of a refined system of congruences for $p(n)$ that was found by Berkovich and Garvan.

Schur-Szego composition of polynomials of degree N introduces an interesting semigroup structure on polynomial spaces. In this note we show how it interacts with the stratification of polynomials according to the multiplicity of their zeros and present the induced semigroup structure on the set of all ordered partitions of N.
Statistics on Ordered Partitions of Sets and q-Stirling Numbers
An ordered partition of [n]:={1,2,..., n} is a sequence of its disjoint subsets whose union is [n]. The number of ordered partitions of [n] with k blocks is k!S(n,k), where S(n,k) is the Stirling number of second kind. In this paper we prove some refinements of this formula by showing that the generating function of some statistics on the set of ordered partitions of [n] with k blocks is a natural $q$-analogue of k!S(n,k). In particular, we prove several conjectures of Steingrímsson. To this end, we construct a mapping from ordered partitions to walks in some digraphs and then, thanks to transfer-matrix method, we determine the corresponding generating functions by determinantal computations.
Shifted and Shiftless Partition Identities II

Let S and T be sets of positive integers and let a be a fixed positive integer. An a-shifted partition identity has the form p(S,n)=p(T,n-a), for all n greater or equal to a. Here p(S,n) is the number partitions of n whose parts are elements of S. For all known nontrivial shifted partition identities, the sets S and T are unions of arithmetic progressions modulo M for some M. In 1987, Andrews found two 1-shifted examples (M=32, 40) and asked whether there were any more. In 1989, Kalvade responded with a further six. In 2000, the first author found 59 new 1-shifted identities using a computer search and showed how these could be proved using the theory of modular functions. Modular transformation of certain shifted identities leads to shiftless partition identities. Again let a be a fixed positive integer, and S, T be distinct sets of positive integers. A shiftless partition identity has the form p(S,n)=p(T,n), for all n not equal to a. In this paper, we show, except in one case, how all known 1-shifted and shiftless identities follow from a four parameter theta function identity due to Jacobi. New shifted and shiftless partition identities are proved.
Edge-Transitive Homogeneous Factorisations of Complete Graphs
This thesis concerns the study of homogeneous factorisations of complete graphs with edge-transitive factors. A factorisation of a complete graph $K_n$ is a partition of its edges into disjoint classes. Each class of edges in a factorisation of $K_n$ corresponds to a spanning subgraph called a factor. If all the factors are isomorphic to one another, then a factorisation of $K_n$ is called an isomorphic factorisation. A homogeneous factorisation of a complete graph is an isomorphic factorisation where there exists a group $G$ which permutes the factors transitively, and a normal subgroup $M$ of $G$ such that each factor is $M$-vertex-transitive. If $M$ also acts edge-transitively on each factor, then a homogeneous factorisation of $K_n$ is called an edge-transitive homogeneous factorisation. The aim of this thesis is to study edge-transitive homogeneous factorisations of $K_n$. We achieve a nearly complete explicit classification except for the case where $G$ is an affine 2-homogeneous group of the form $Z_p^R \rtimes G_0$, where $G_0 \leq ΓL(1,p^R)$. In this case, we obtain necessary and sufficient arithmetic conditions on certain parameters for such factorisations to exist, and give a generic construction that specifies the homogeneous factorisation completely, given that the conditions on the parameters hold. Moreover, we give two constructions of infinite families of examples where we specify the parameters explicitly. In the second infinite family, the arc-transitive factors are generalisations of certain arc-transitive, self-complementary graphs constructed by Peisert in 2001.

We propose several constructions of commutative or cocommutative Hopf algebras based on various combinatorial structures, and investigate the relations between them. A commutative Hopf algebra of permutations is obtained by a general construction based on graphs, and its non-commutative dual is realized in three different ways, in particular as the Grossman-Larson algebra of heap ordered trees.
Extensions to endofunctions, parking functions, set compositions, set partitions, planar binary trees and rooted forests are discussed. Finally, we introduce one-parameter families interpolating between different structures constructed on the same combinatorial objects.
The enumeration of planar graphs via Wick's theorem

A seminal technique of theoretical physics called Wick's theorem interprets the Gaussian matrix integral of the products of the trace of powers of Hermitian matrices as the number of labelled maps with a given degree sequence, sorted by their Euler characteristics. This leads to the map enumeration results analogous to those obtained by combinatorial methods. In this paper we show that the enumeration of the graphs embeddable on a given 2-dimensional surface (a main research topic of contemporary enumerative combinatorics) can also be formulated as the Gaussian matrix integral of an ice-type partition function. Some of the most puzzling conjectures of discrete mathematics are related to the notion of the cycle double cover. We express the number of the graphs with a fixed directed cycle double cover as the Gaussian matrix integral of an Ihara-Selberg-type function.
Geometry of rank tests
We study partitions of the symmetric group which have desirable geometric properties. The statistical tests defined by such partitions involve counting all permutations in the equivalence classes. These permutations are the linear extensions of partially ordered sets specified by the data. Our methods refine rank tests of non-parametric statistics, such as the sign test and the runs test, and are useful for the exploratory analysis of ordinal data. Convex rank tests correspond to probabilistic conditional independence structures known as semi-graphoids. Submodular rank tests are classified by the faces of the cone of submodular functions, or by Minkowski summands of the permutohedron. We enumerate all small instances of such rank tests. Graphical tests correspond to both graphical models and to graph associahedra, and they have excellent statistical and algorithmic properties.
Pattern Avoidance in Set Partitions
The study of patterns in permutations in a very active area of current research. Klazar defined and studied an analogous notion of pattern for set partitions. We continue this work, finding exact formulas for the number of set partitions which avoid certain specific patterns. In particular, we enumerate and characterize those partitions avoiding any partition of a 3-element set. This allows us to conclude that the corresponding sequences are P-recursive. Finally, we define a second notion of pattern in a set partition, based on its restricted growth function. Related results are obtained for this new definition.
Partitions and their lattices
Ferrers graphs and tables of partitions are treated as vectors. Matrix operations are used for simple proofs of identities concerning partitions. Interpreting partitions as vectors gives a possibility to generalize partitions on negative numbers. Partitions are then tabulated into lattices and some properties of these lattices are studied. There appears a new identity counting Ferrers graphs packed consecutively into isoscele form. The lattices form the base for tabulating combinatorial identities.

We prove analogues for sub-posets of the Dowling lattices of the results of Calderbank, Hanlon, and Robinson on homology of sub-posets of the partition lattices. The technical tool used is the wreath product analogue of the tensor species of Joyal.
Tamari lattices, forests and Thompson monoids
A connection relating Tamari lattices on symmetric groups regarded as lattices under the weak Bruhat order to the positive monoid P of Thompson group F is presented. Tamari congruence classes correspond to classes of equivalent elements in P. The two well known normal forms in P correspond to endpoints of intervals in the weak Bruhat order that determine the Tamari classes. In the monoid P these correspond to lexicographically largest and lexicographically smallest form, while on the level of permutations they correspond to 132-avoiding and 231-avoiding permutations.
Forests appear naturally in both contexts as they are used to model both permutations and elements of the Thompson monoid.
The connection is then extended to Tamari orders on partitions of ((k-1)n+2)-gons into (k+1)-gons and Thompson monoids P_k, k >1.
