Overpartitions, lattice paths and Rogers-Ramanujan identities

We extend partition-theoretic work of Andrews, Bressoud, and Burge to overpartitions, defining the notions of successive ranks, generalized Durfee squares, and generalized lattice paths, and then relating these to overpartitions defined by multiplicity conditions on the parts. This leads to many new partition and overpartition identities, and provides a unification of a number of well-known identities of the Rogers-Ramanujan type. Among these are Gordon's generalization of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities, Andrews' generalization of the Göllnitz-Gordon identities, and Lovejoy's ``Gordon's theorems for overpartitions."
Jacobi's Identity and Synchronized Partitions
We obtain a finite form of Jacobi's identity and present a combinatorial proof based on the structure of synchronized partitions.
On the Asymptotic Formula for the Number of Plane Partitions of Positive Integers
The paper presents a discussion on the asymptotic formula for the number of plane partitions of a large positive integer.
An inequality on broken chessboards
For any partition of a positive integer we consider the chess (or draughts) colouring of its associated Ferrers graph. Let b denote the total number of black unit squares, and w the number of white squares. In this note we characterize all pairs (b,w) which arise in this way. This simple combinatorical result was discovered by characterizing Hilbert series of certain right modules over cubic three-dimensional Artin-Schelter algebras. However in this note we present a purely combinatorical proof.
The result is (at least partially) known in literature, however we found it interesting to present an elementary proof. All additional references and remarks will be mostly appreciated.

We construct an involution on set partitions which keeps track of the numbers of crossings, nestings and alignments of two edges.
We derive then the symmetric distribution of the numbers of crossings and nestings in partitions, which generalizes Klazar's recent result in perfect matchings. By factorizing our involution through bijections between set partitions and some path diagrams we obtain the continued fraction expansions of the corresponding ordinary generating functions.

Periodic Schur process is a generalization of the Schur process introduced in math.CO/0107056. We compute its correlation functions and their bulk scaling limits, and discuss several applications including asymptotic analysis of uniform measures on cylindric partitions, time-dependent extensions of the discrete sine kernel, and bulk limit behavior of certain measures on partitions introduced in hep-th/0306238 in connection with supersymmetric gauge theories.
The polytope of degree partitions

The degree partition of a simple graph is its degree sequence rearranged in weakly decreasing order. The polytope of degree partitions (respectively, degree sequences) is the convex hull of all degree partitions (respectively, degree sequences) of a fixed length. We think of the degree sequence polytope as the symmetrization of the degree partition polytope and the degree partition polytope as the asymmetric part of the degree sequence polytope. The degree sequence polytope is a well studied object with formulas (generating functions) known for its face numbers, volume, and number of lattice points. We study the degree partition polytope and determine its extreme points, edges, and facets. In particular, the degree partition polytope on n vertices has 2^{n-1} extreme points.
Enriched $P$-partitions and peak algebras (extended abstract)
We generalize Stembridge's enriched $P$-partitions and use this theory to outline the structure of peak algebras for the symmetric group and the hyperoctahedral group. Whereas Stembridge's enriched $P$-partitions are related to quasisymmetric functions (the coalgebra dual to Solomon's type A descent algebra), our generalized enriched $P$-partitions are related to type B quasisymmetric functions (the coalgebra dual to Solomon's type B descent algebra). Using these functions, we explore three different peak algebras: the "interior" and "left" peak algebras of type A, and a new type B peak algebra. Our results specialize to results for commutative peak algebras as well.
The $m$-colored composition poset

We generalize Björner and Stanley's poset of compositions to $m$-colored compositions. Their work draws many analogies between their (1-colored) composition poset and Young's lattice of partitions, including links to (quasi-)symmetric functions and representation theory. Here we show that many of these analogies hold for any number of colors. While many of the proofs for Björner and Stanley's poset were simplified by showing isomorphism with the subword order, we remark that with 2 or more colors, our posets are not isomorphic to a subword order.
Gibbs distributions for random partitions generated by a fragmentation process

In this paper we study random partitions of 1,...n, where every cluster of size j can be in any of w\_j possible internal states. The Gibbs (n,k,w) distribution is obtained by sampling uniformly among such partitions with k clusters. We provide conditions on the weight sequence w allowing construction of a partition valued random process where at step k the state has the Gibbs (n,k,w) distribution, so the partition is subject to irreversible fragmentation as time evolves. For a particular one-parameter family of weight sequences w\_j, the time-reversed process is the discrete Marcus-Lushnikov coalescent process with affine collision rate K\_{i,j}=a+b(i+j) for some real numbers a and b. Under further restrictions on a and b, the fragmentation process can be realized by conditioning a Galton-Watson tree with suitable offspring distribution to have n nodes, and cutting the edges of this tree by random sampling of edges without replacement, to partition the tree into a collection of subtrees. Suitable offspring distributions include the binomial, negative binomial and Poisson distributions.
From Orbital Varieties to Alternating Sign Matrices
We study a one-parameter family of vector-valued polynomials associated to each simple Lie algebra. When this parameter $q$ equals -1 one recovers Joseph polynomials, whereas at $q$ cubic root of unity one obtains ground state eigenvectors of some integrable models with boundary conditions depending on the Lie algebra; in particular, we find that the sum of its entries is related to numbers of Alternating Sign Matrices and/or Plane Partitions in various symmetry classes.

We use Naito-Sagaki's work [S. Naito & D. Sagaki, J. Algebra 245 (2001) 395--412, J. Algebra 251 (2002) 461--474] on Lakshmibai-Seshadri paths fixed by diagram automorphisms to study the partitions fixed by Mullineux involution. We characterize the set of Mullineux-fixed partitions in terms of crystal graphs of basic representations of twisted affine Lie algebras of type $A_{2\ell}^{(2)}$ and of type $D_{\ell+1}^{(2)}$. We set up bijections between the set of symmetric partitions and the set of partitions into distinct parts. We propose a notion of double restricted strict partitions. Bijections between the set of restricted strict partitions (resp., the set of double restricted strict partitions) and the set of Mullineux-fixed partitions in the odd case (resp., in the even case) are obtained.
Increasing and Decreasing Subsequences of Permutations and Their Variants

We survey the theory of increasing and decreasing subsequences of permutations. Enumeration problems in this area are closely related to the RSK algorithm. The asymptotic behavior of the expected value of the length is(w) of the longest increasing subsequence of a permutation w of 1,2,...,n was obtained by Vershik-Kerov and (almost) by Logan-Shepp. The entire limiting distribution of is(w) was then determined by Baik, Deift, and Johansson. These techniques can be applied to other classes of permutations, such as involutions, and are related to the distribution of eigenvalues of elements of the classical groups. A number of generalizations and variations of increasing/decreasing subsequences are discussed, including the theory of pattern avoidance, unimodal and alternating subsequences, and crossings and nestings of matchings and set partitions.

The distance of a permutation from a subgroup of S_n
We show that the problem of computing the distance of a given permutation from a subgroup $H$ of $S_n$ is in general NP-complete, even under the restriction that $H$ is elementary Abelian of exponent 2. The problem is shown to be polynomial-time equivalent to a problem related to finding a maximal partition of the edges of an Eulerian directed graph into cycles and this problem is in turn equivalent to the standard NP-complete problem of Boolean satisfiability.

We establish necessary and sufficient conditions for convergence (in the sense of finite dimensional distributions) of multiplicative measures on the set of partitions. We show that this convergence is equivalent to asymptotic independence of finite sizes of components. The multiplicative measures depict component spectra of random structures, the equilibrium of classic models of statistical mechanics and stochastic processes of coagulation-fragmentation. We then apply Schur's tauberian lemma and some results from additive number theory and enumerative combinatorics, in order to verify the conditions derived in important special cases. Our results demostrate that the common belief that interacting groups in mean field models become independent as the number of particles goes to infinity, is not true in general.

Motivated by Gauss's first proof of the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra, we study the topology of harmonic algebraic curves. By the maximum principle, a harmonic curve has no bounded components; its topology is determined by the combinatorial data of a noncrossing matching. Similarly, every complex polynomial gives rise to a related combinatorial object that we call a basketball, consisting of a pair of noncrossing matchings satisfying one additional constraint. We prove that every noncrossing matching arises from some harmonic curve, and deduce from this that every basketball arises from some polynomial.

Based on discrete truncated powers, the beautiful Popoviciu's formulation for restricted integer partition function is generalized. An explicit formulation for two dimensional multivariate truncated power functions is presented. Therefore, a simplified explicit formulation for two dimensional vector partition functions is given. Moreover, the generalized Frobenius problem is also discussed.

Many natural counting problems arise in connection with the normal form of braids--and seem to have never been considered so far. Here we solve some of them by analysing the normality condition in terms of the associated permutations, their descents and the corresponding partitions. A number of different induction schemes appear in that framework.

We put recent results by Chen, Deng, Du, Stanley and Yan on crossings and nestings of matchings and set partitions in the larger context of the enumeration of fillings of Ferrers shape on which one imposes restrictions on their increasing and decreasing chains. While Chen et al. work with Robinson-Schensted-like insertion/deletion algorithms, we use the growth diagram construction of Fomin to obtain our results. We extend the results by Chen et al., which, in the language of fillings, are results about $0$-$1$-fillings, to arbitrary fillings. Finally, we point out that, very likely, these results are part of a bigger picture which also includes recent results of Jonsson on $0$-$1$-fillings of stack polyominoes, and of results of Backelin, West and Xin and of Bousquet-Mélou and Steingr\'ımsson on the enumeration of permutations and involutions with restricted patterns. In particular, we show that our growth diagram bijections do in fact provide alternative proofs of the results by Backelin, West and Xin and by Bousquet-Mélou and Steingr\'ımsson.
