We show that Ramsey theory, a domain presently conceived to guarantee the existence of large homogeneous sets for partitions on k-tuples of words (for every natural number k) over a finite alphabet, can be extended to one for partitions on Schreier-type sets of words (of every countable ordinal). Indeed, we establish an extension of the partition theorem of Carlson about words and of the (more general) partition theorem of Furstenberg-Katznelson about combinatorial subspaces of the set of words (generating from k-tuples of words for any fixed natural number k) into a partition theorem about combinatorial subspaces (generating from Schreier-type sets of words of order any fixed countable ordinal). Furthermore, as a result we obtain a strengthening of Carlson's infinitary Nash-Williams type (and Ellentuck type) partition theorem about infinite sequences of variable words into a theorem, in which an infinite sequence of variable words and a binary partition of all the finite sequences of words, one of whose components is, in addition, a tree, are assumed, concluding that all the Schreier-type finite reductions of an infinite reduction of the given sequence have a behavior determined by the Cantor-Bendixson ordinal index of the tree-component of the partition, falling in the tree-component above that index and in its complement below it.

We study M(n), the number of distinct values taken by multinomial coefficients with upper entry n, and some closely related sequences. We show that both pP(n)/M(n) and M(n)/p(n) tend to zero as n goes to infinity, where pP(n) is the number of partitions of n into primes and p(n) is the total number of partitions of n. To use methods from commutative algebra, we encode partitions and multinomial coefficients as monomials.
Subdivision of complexes of k-Trees
Consider the poset of partitions of {1,...(n-1)k+1} with block sizes congruent to 1 modulo k. We prove that its order complex is a subdivision of the complex of k-trees, thereby answering a question posed by Feichtner. The result is obtained by an ad-hoc generalization of concepts from the theory of nested set complexes to non-lattices.

We give a complete solution of the following problem: Find, classify and count the (classes of) periodic orbits on an equilateral triangle. We prove that Fagnano's period 3 orbit is the only periodic orbit with odd period. A periodic orbit is either prime or some d-fold iterate thereof. We count prime and iterate periodic orbits of period $2n$ via a bijection with a certain partition of $n$, then count only prime orbits using the prime factorization of $n$.

We uncover the structure of the space of symmetric functions in non-commutative variables by showing that the underlined Hopf algebra is both free and co-free. We also introduce the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions in non-commutative variables and define the product and coproduct on the monomial basis of this space and show that this Hopf algebra is free and cofree. In the process of looking for bases which generate the space we define orders on the set partitions and set compositions which allow us to define bases which have simple and natural rules for the product of basis elements.
Stanley's Zrank Problem on Skew Partitions

We present an affirmative answer to Stanley's zrank problem, namely, the zrank and rank are equal for any skew partition. We show that certain classes of restricted Cauchy matrices are nonsingular and furthermore, the signs depend on the number of zero entries. Similar to notion of the jrank of a skew partition, we give a characterization of the rank in terms of the Giambelli type matrices of the corresponding skew Schur functions. We also show that the sign of the determinant of a factorial Cauchy matrix is uniquely determined by the number of its zero entries, which implies the nonsingularity of the inverse binomial coefficient matrix.

The $F$-triangle is a refined face count for the generalised cluster complex of Fomin and Reading. We compute the $F$-triangle explicitly for all irreducible finite root systems. Furthermore, we use these results to partially prove the "$M=F$ Conjecture" of Armstrong which predicts a surprising relation between the $F$-triangle and the Möbius function of his $m$-divisible partition poset associated to a finite root system.

We prove a conjecture of H.Widom stated in [W] (math/0108008) about the reality of eigenvalues of certain infinite matrices arising in asymptotic analysis of large Toeplitz determinants. As a byproduct we obtain a new proof of A.Okounkov's formula for the (determinantal) correlation functions of the Schur measures on partitions.

We prove the conjecture of Falikman--Friedland--Loewy on the parity of the degrees of projective varieties of $n\times n$ complex symmetric matrices of rank at most $k$.
We also characterize the parity of the degrees of projective varieties of $n\times n$ complex skew symmetric matrices of rank at most $2p$.
We give recursive relations which determine the parity of the degrees of projective varieties of $m\times n$ complex matrices of rank at most $k$.
In the case the degrees of these varieties are odd, we characterize the minimal dimensions of subspaces of $n\times n$ skew symmetric real matrices and of $m\times n$ real matrices containing a nonzero matrix of rank at most $k$.
The parity questions studied here are also of combinatorial interest since they concern the parity of the number of plane partitions contained in a given box, on the one hand, and the parity of the number of symplectic tableaux of rectangular shape, on the other hand.

We introduce classes of graphs with bounded expansion as a generalization of both proper minor closed classes and degree bounded classes. Such classes are based on a new invariant, the greatest reduced average density (grad) of G with rank r, grad r(G). For these classes we prove the existence of several partition results such as the existence of low tree-width and low tree-depth colorings. This generalizes and simplifies several earlier results (obtained for minor closed classes).
Grad and Classes with Bounded Expansion II. Algorithmic Aspects

Classes of graphs with bounded expansion are a generalization of both proper minor closed classes and degree bounded classes. Such classes are based on a new invariant, the greatest reduced average density (grad) of G with rank r, ∇r(G). These classes are also characterized by the existence of several partition results such as the existence of low tree-width and low tree-depth colorings. These results lead to several new linear time algorithms, such as an algorithm for counting all the isomorphs of a fixed graph in an input graph or an algorithm for checking whether there exists a subset of vertices of a priori bounded size such that the subgraph induced by this subset satisfies some arbirtrary but fixed first order sentence. We also show that for fixed p, computing the distances between two vertices up to distance p may be performed in constant time per query after a linear time preprocessing. We also show, extending several earlier results, that a class of graphs has sublinear separators if it has sub-exponential expansion. This result result is best possible in general.

This is a short review on the Faà di Bruno formulas, and some Hopf algebras associated to them. These allow, among several other things, a short proof of the Lie-Scheffers theorem, and relating the Lagrange inversion formulas with antipodes. The link of Faà di Bruno formulas with the theory of set partitions is developed in some detail.

In the context of generating functions for $P$-partitions, we revisit three flavors of quasisymmetric functions: Gessel's quasisymmetric functions, Chow's type B quasisymmetric functions, and Poirier's signed quasisymmetric functions. In each case we use the inner coproduct to give a combinatorial description (counting pairs of permutations) to the multiplication in: Solomon's type A descent algebra, Solomon's type B descent algebra, and the Mantaci-Reutenauer algebra, respectively. The presentation is brief and elementary, our main results coming as consequences of $P$-partition theorems already in the literature.

Let $LG_n$ denote the Lagrangian Grassmannian parametrizing maximal isotropic (Lagrangian) subspaces of a fixed symplectic vector space of dimension $2n.$ For each strict partition $λ=(λ_1,...,λ_k)$ with $λ_1\leq n$ there is a Schubert variety $X(λ).$ Let $T$ denote a maximal torus of the symplectic group acting on $LG_n.$ Consider the $T$-equivariant cohomology of $LG_n$ and the $T$-equivariant fundamental class $σ(λ)$ of $X(λ).$ The main result of the present paper is an explicit formula for the restriction of the class $σ(λ)$ to any torus fixed point. The formula is written in terms of factorial analogue of the Schur $Q$-function, introduced by Ivanov. As a corollary to the restriction formula, we obtain an equivariant version of the Giambelli-type formula for $LG_n.$ As another consequence of the main result, we obtained a presentation of the ring $H_T^*(LG_n).$
On conjugates for set partitions and integer compositions
There is a familiar conjugate for integer partitions: transpose the Ferrers diagram, and a conjugate for integer compositions: transpose a Ferrers-like diagram. Here we propose a conjugate for set partitions and show that it interchanges # singletons and # adjacencies. Its restriction to noncrossing partitions cropped up in a 1972 paper of Kreweras. We also exhibit an analogous pairs of statistics interchanged by the composition conjugate.

Enriched $P$-partitions and peak algebras

We develop a more general view of Stembridge's enriched $P$-partitions and use this theory to outline the structure of peak algebras for the symmetric group and the hyperoctahedral group. Initially we focus on commutative peak algebras, spanned by sums of permutations with the same number of peaks, where we consider several variations on the definition of "peak." Whereas Stembridge's enriched $P$-partitions are related to quasisymmetric functions (the dual coalgebra of Solomon's type A descent algebra), our generalized enriched $P$-partitions are related to type B quasisymmetric functions (the dual coalgebra of Solomon's type B descent algebra). Using these functions, we move on to explore (non-commutative) peak algebras spanned by sums of permutations with the same set of peaks. While some of these algebras have been studied before, our approach gives explicit structure constants with a combinatorial description.
Coagulation--fragmentation duality, Poisson--Dirichlet distributions and random recursive trees

In this paper we give a new example of duality between fragmentation and coagulation operators. Consider the space of partitions of mass (i.e., decreasing sequences of nonnegative real numbers whose sum is 1) and the two-parameter family of Poisson--Dirichlet distributions $\operatorname {PD}(α,θ)$ that take values in this space. We introduce families of random fragmentation and coagulation operators $\mathrm {Frag}_α$ and $\mathrm {Coag}_{α,θ}$, respectively, with the following property: if the input to $\mathrm {Frag}_α$ has $\operatorname {PD}(α,θ)$ distribution, then the output has $\operatorname {PD}(α,θ+1)$ distribution, while the reverse is true for $\mathrm {Coag}_{α,θ}$. This result may be proved using a subordinator representation and it provides a companion set of relations to those of Pitman between $\operatorname {PD}(α,θ)$ and $\operatorname {PD}(αβ,θ)$. Repeated application of the $\mathrm {Frag}_α$ operators gives rise to a family of fragmentation chains. We show that these Markov chains can be encoded naturally by certain random recursive trees, and use this representation to give an alternative and more concrete proof of the coagulation--fragmentation duality.
A Combinatorial Interpretation for the coefficients in the Kronecker Product $s_{(n-p,p)}\ast s_λ$ (Multiplicities in the Kronecker Product $s_{(n-p,p)}\ast s_λ$)

In this paper we give a combinatorial interpretation for the coefficient of $s_ν$ in the Kronecker product $s_{(n-p,p)}\ast s_λ$, where $λ=(λ_1, ..., λ_{\ell(λ)})\vdash n$, if $\ell(λ)\geq 2p-1$ or $λ_1\geq 2p-1$; that is, if $λ$ is not a partition inside the $2(p-1)\times 2(p-1)$ square. For $λ$ inside the square our combinatorial interpretation provides an upper bound for the coefficients. In general, we are able to combinatorially compute these coefficients for all $λ$ when $n>(2p-2)^2$. We use this combinatorial interpretation to give characterizations for multiplicity free Kronecker products. We have also obtained some formulas for special cases.
Relations between Potts and RSOS models on a torus

We study the relationship between Q-state Potts models and staggered RSOS models of the A\_{p-1} type on a torus, with sqrt(Q)=2 cos(pi / p). In general the partition functions of these models differ due to clusters of non-trivial topology. However we find exact identities, valid for any temperature and any finite size of the torus, between various modified partition functions in the two pictures. The field theoretic interpretation of these modified partition function is discussed.
