Growth and identities of monogenic free adequate monoids
Motivated by recent advances in inverse semigroup theory, we investigate the growth of and identities satisfied by free left and free two-sided adequate monoids. We explicitly compute the growth of the monogenic free left adequate monoid with the usual unary monoid generating set and show it has intermediate growth owing to a connection with integer partitions. In the two-sided case, we establish a lower bound on the (idempotent) growth rate of the monogenic free adequate monoid, showing that it grows exponentially. We completely classify the enriched identities satisfied by the monogenic free left adequate monoid and deduce that it satisfies the same monoid identities as the sylvester monoid. In contrast, we show that the monogenic free two-sided adequate monoid satisfies no non-trivial monoid identities.

Parity of the partition function in quadratic progressions
The parity of the partition function $p(n)$ remains strikingly mysterious. Beyond a handful of fragmentary results, essentially nothing is known about the distribution of parity. We prove a uniform result on quadratic progressions. If $1<D\equiv 23\pmod{24}$ is square-free and only divisible by primes $\ell\equiv 1, 7\pmod 8$, then both parities occur infinitely often among $$ p\left(\frac{Dm^2+1}{24}\right), $$ with $(m,6)=1.$ The argument takes place on the modular curve $X_0(6)$ and shows that parity along these thin orbits is \emph{not constant}. The proof connects classical identities for the partition generating function, through the method of (twisted) Borcherds products, to the arithmetic geometry of {\it ordinary} CM fibers on the Deligne-Rapoport model of $X_0(6)$ in characteristic 2. This result is a special case of a general theorem for the coefficients of suitable vector-valued weight 1/2 harmonic Maass forms that satisfy a "Heegner packet'' condition.

Three more proofs of two congruences for Merca's partition function
Published in Ramanujan J. 69 (2026), no. 1, Paper 6 • Search Publication
In this note, we provide three new, very short proofs of two interesting congruences for Merca's partition function $a(n)$, which enumerates integer partitions where the odd parts have multiplicity at most 2. These modulo 2 congruences were first shown elementarily by Sellers. We then frame $a(n)$ into the much broader context of eta-quotients, and suggest how to comprehensively describe its parity behavior. In particular, extensive computations suggest that $a(n)$ is odd precisely 25\% of the time.
Bisection width, max-cut and internal partitions of 5-regular graphs
In this paper, we present a new factor of IID process based on the local algorithm introduced by Díaz, Serna, and Wormald (2007). This new approach allows us to improve the previously known upper bounds on the minimum and maximum bisection width and the maximum cut of random d-regular graphs for d > 4 by introducing a new recoloring phase after the termination of the original algorithm. As an application, we show that random 5-regular graphs asymptotically almost surely admit an internal partition, i.e., a partition of the vertex set into two nonempty classes so that every vertex has at least half of its neighbors in its own class.

Arithmetic properties of partition functions introduced by Pushpa and Vasuki
In this short note, we prove several infinite family of congruences for some restricted partitions introduced by Pushpa and Vasuki (2022) (thereby, also proving a conjecture of Dasappa et. al. (2023)). We also prove some isolated congruences which seem to have been missed by earlier authors. Our proof techniques uses both elementary means as well as the theory of modular forms.

On the construction of frieze patterns from partitions of convex polygons by nonintersecting diagonals
We demonstrate in an elementary way how to construct a frieze pattern of width $m-3$ from a partition of a convex $m$-gon by not intersecting diagonals.

Slice rank and partition rank of the determinant
The Laplace expansion expresses the $n \times n$ determinant $\det_n$ as a sum of $n$ products. Do shorter expansions exist? In this paper we: - Fully determine the slice rank decompositions of $\det_n$ (where each product must contain a linear factor): In this case, we show that $n$ summands are necessary, and moreover, the only such expansions with $n$ summands are equivalent (in a precise sense) to the Laplace expansion. - Prove a logarithmic lower bound for the partition rank of $\det_n$ (where each product is of multilinear forms): In this case, we show that at least $\log_2(n)+1$ summands are needed. We also explain why existing techniques fail to yield any nontrivial lower bound, and why our new method cannot give a super-logarithmic lower bound. - Separate partition rank from slice rank for $\det_n$: we find a quadratic expansion for $\det_4$, over any field, with fewer summands than the Laplace expansion. This construction is related to a well-known example of Green-Tao and Lovett-Meshulam-Samorodnitsky disproving the naive version of the Gowers Inverse conjecture over small fields. An important motivation for these questions comes from the challenge of separating structure and randomness for tensors. On the one hand, we show that the random construction fails to separate: for a random tensor of partition rank $r$, the analytic rank is $r-o(1)$ with high probability. On the other hand, our results imply that the determinant yields the first asymptotic separation between partition rank and analytic rank of $d$-tensors, with their ratio tending to infinity with $d$.

$q$-Binomial expansions of the truncated MacMahon's $q$-series
In 1920, MacMahon introduced two families of $q$-series to study divisor sums. Recent work has shown that MacMahon's $q$-series are closely connected to overpartitions and $3$-colored partitions. Merca introduced truncated forms of MacMahon's $q$-series to generalize earlier results by Andrews-Rose and Ono-Singh, and posed two conjectures regarding the $q$-binomial expansions of these truncated series. In this paper, we provide combinatorial proofs of Merca's conjectures through the combinatorial interpretation of $q$-binomial coefficients.

Zero-Freeness is All You Need: A Weitz-Type FPTAS for the Entire Lee-Yang Zero-Free Region
We present a Weitz-type FPTAS for the ferromagnetic Ising model across the entire Lee--Yang zero-free region, without relying on the strong spatial mixing (SSM) property. Our algorithm is Weitz-type for two reasons. First, it expresses the partition function as a telescoping product of ratios, with the key being to approximate each ratio. Second, it uses Weitz's self-avoiding walk tree, and truncates it at logarithmic depth to give a good and efficient approximation. The key difference from the standard Weitz algorithm is that we approximate a carefully designed edge-deletion ratio instead of the marginal probability of a vertex being assigned a particular spin, ensuring our algorithm does not require SSM. Furthermore, by establishing local dependence of coefficients (LDC), we prove a novel form of SSM for these edge-deletion ratios, which, in turn, implies the standard SSM for the random cluster model. This is the first SSM result for the random cluster model on general graphs, beyond lattices. Our proof of LDC is based on a new divisibility relation, and we show such relations hold quite universally. This leads to a broadly applicable framework for proving LDC across a variety of models, including the Potts model, the hypergraph independence polynomial, and Holant problems. Combined with existing zero-freeness results for these models, we derive new SSM results for them.

On a pair of three-colored (mod 10) partition identities
We prove a pair of (mod 10) partition identities. The sum sides involve three-colored partitions into distinct parts, while the product sides are the generating functions for distinct partitions times the Rogers-Ramanujan products. Our proofs make heavy use of Maple to verify that functional equations are satisfied.

Covering and labeling generalizations of the Borsuk-Ulam theorem
We prove multiple generalizations of Fan's combinatorial labeling result for sphere triangulations. This can be seen as a comprehensive extension of the Borsuk--Ulam theorem. In typical applications, the Borsuk--Ulam theorem gives complexity bounds in a suitable sense, whereas our extension additionally provides insight into the structure of objects satisfying the complexity bound. This structure is governed by order types of finite point sets in Euclidean space and more generally by the intersection combinatorics of faces under continuous maps from the simplex. We develop some of those applications for sphere coverings, Kneser-type colorings, Hall-type results for hypergraphs, and hyperplane mass partitions, among other consequences. We provide a new proof of the topological Hall theorem and extend it into a result that simultaneously generalizes hypergraph Hall theorems and topological lower bounds for chromatic numbers.

Partition Functions and Kurepa Decomposition I: Algebraic computation and some physical Applications
This paper examines the algebraic features of notable polynomial functions and explores their combinatorial aspects by presenting precise decompositions in terms of Dobinski numbers, Bell numbers, and moments generating functions. Additionally, a new equivalence to the Kurepa factorial is developed to help investigate the Kurepa conjecture. In conclusion, we examine several physical phenomena related to Kurepa factorials, occupation number, Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein distributions while exploring their algebraic characteristics.

Vertex-ordering and arc-partitioning problems
We study vertex-ordering problems in loop-free digraphs subject to constraints on the left-going arcs, focusing on existence conditions and computational complexity. As an intriguing special case, we explore vertex-specific lower and upper bounds on the left-outdegrees and right-indegrees. We show, for example, that deciding whether the left-going arcs can form an in-branching is solvable in polynomial time and provide a necessary and sufficient condition, while the analogous problem for an in-arborescence turns out to be NP-complete. We also consider a weighted variant that enforces vertex-specific lower and upper bounds on the weighted left-outdegrees, which is particularly relevant in applications. Furthermore, we investigate the connection between ordering problems and their arc-partitioning counterparts, where one seeks to partition the arcs into a subgraph from a specific digraph family and an acyclic subgraph -- equivalently, one seeks to cover all directed cycles with a subgraph belonging to a specific family. For the family of in-branchings, unions of disjoint dipaths, and matchings, the two formulations coincide, whereas for in-arborescences, dipaths, Hamiltonian dipaths, and perfect matchings the formulations diverge. Our results yield a comprehensive complexity landscape, unify diverse special cases and variants, clarify the algorithmic boundaries of ordered digraphs, and relate them to broader topics including graph degeneracy, acyclic orientations, influence propagation, and rank aggregation.
Hyperpfaffian Correlations for Beta-Ensembles: Beta an Even Square Integer
We give a hyperpfaffian formulation for correlation functions in $β$-ensembles of $M \times M$ random matrices when $β= L^2$ is an even square integer. More specifically, to the $m$th correlation function $R_m : \R^m \rightarrow [0, \infty)$ we associate the $L$-vector valued function $ω_m : \R^m \rightarrow Λ^L \R^{L(M-m)}$ such that $R_m(\mathbf y)$ is given by the Vandermonde determinant in $y_1, \ldots, y_M$ times the hyperpfaffian of $ω_m.$ The partition function of the ensemble was previously shown to be the hyperpfaffian of a {\it Gram} $L$-form $ω$ in $Λ^L \R^{LM},$ and we demonstrate the relationship between $ω_m(\mathbf y)$ and $ω$, both having coefficients built from integrals of Wronskians of monic polynomials. Assuming the existence of families of polynomials sympathetic with the weight of the ensemble, we may construct $ω(\mathbf y)$ so it is very sparse (relative to the expected ${L(M-m) \choose L}$ coefficients of a general $L$-vector). These generalize skew-orthogonal polynomials arising in the well-understood $β= 4$ situation. Finally we explore the situation in the circular $β= L^2$ ensembles. Here the monomials give a prototype, and we give explicit formulas for (the circular versions of) $ω$ and $ω_m.$ We use our hyperpfaffian framework to produce exact formulas for the two point function when $β= 16$ for small values $M.$ Along the way we will record hyperpfaffian evaluations using known values of partition functions of $β$-ensembles.

Submonoids of Infinite Symmetric Inverse Monoids
In this thesis we study the subsemigroup structure of the symmetric inverse monoid $I_X$, the inverse semigroup of bijections between subsets of the set $X$, when $X$ is an infinite set. We explore three different approaches to this task. First, we classify the maximal subsemigroups of $I_X$ containing certain subgroups of the symmetric group on $X$. The subgroups in question are the symmetric group itself, the pointwise stabiliser of a finite non-empty subset of $X$, the stabiliser of an ultrafilter on $X$, and the stabiliser of a finite partition of $X$. Next, we study subsemigroups of $I_X$ which are closed in semigroup topologies on $I_X$ introduced by Elliot et al. in 2023. We discover that the closed subsemigroups in these topologies that contain all the idempotents of $I_X$ coincide exactly with semigroups of partial endomorphisms and partial automorphisms of relational structures defined on $X$. Furthermore, we show that if a relational structure $R$ on a countable set $X$ only contains a finite number of relations, then there exists a finite subset $U$ of $I_X$ such that the union of the partial automorphisms of $R$ together with $U$ generates all of $I_X$. Finally, we study the subsemigroup structure of $I_X$ under a preorder introduced by George Bergman and Saharon Shelah in 2006 for the symmetric group. Extending the preorder to $I_X$, if $S_1$ and $S_2$ are subsemigroups of $I_X$, we say that $S_1 \preccurlyeq S_2$ if there exists a finite subset $U$ of $I_X$ such that $S_1$ is contained in the semigroup generated by the union of $S_2$ and $U$. We classify certain types of subsemigroups of $I_X$ according the Bergman-Shelah preorder, and we formulate a conjecture analogous to the main result by Bergman and Shelah.

Coalition graphs of connected domination partitions in subcubic graphs
A graph is subcubic if it is connected and its maximum vertex degree does not exceed 3. Two disjoint vertex subsets of a graph $G$ form a connected coalition in $G$ if neither of them is a connected dominating set but their union is a connected dominating set. A connected coalition partition of $G$ is a partition of its vertices $π(G) = \{V_1, V_2,..., V_k \}$, such that each $V_i$ is either a connected dominating set consisting of a single vertex or forms a coalition with some set of $π(G)$. The formation of connected coalitions is described by a coalition graph whose vertices correspond to the sets of $π$, and two vertices are adjacent if and only if the corresponding sets form a coalition in $G$. We characterize all coalition graphs of subcubic graphs.

Simple harmonic oscillators from non-semisimple walled Brauer algebras
Walled Brauer algebras $B_N ( m , n ) $ illuminate the combinatorics of mixed tensor representations of $U(N)$, with $m$ copies of the fundamental and $n$ copies of the anti-fundamental representation. They lie at the intersection of research in representation theory, AdS/CFT and quantum information theory. They have been used to study of correlators in multi-matrix models motivated by brane-anti-brane physics in AdS/CFT. They have been applied in computing and optimising fidelities of port-based quantum teleportation. There is a large $N$ regime, specifically $ N \ge (m+n)$ where the algebras are semi-simple and their representation theory more tractable. There are known combinatorial formulae for dimensions of irreducible representations and associated reduction multiplicities. The large $N$ regime has a stability property whereby these formulae are independent of $N$. In this paper we initiate a systematic study of the combinatorics in the non-semisimple regime of $ N = m +n - l $, with positive $l$. We introduce restricted Bratteli diagrams (RBD) which are useful as an instrument to process known data from the large $N$ regime to calculate representation theory data in the non-semisimple regime. We identify within the non-semisimple regime, a region of $(m,n)$-stability, where $ \min ( m, n ) \ge ( 2l -3) $ and the RBD take a stable form depending on $l$ only and not the choice of $ m,n$ within the region. In this regime, several aspects of the combinatorics of the RBD are controlled by a universal partition function for an infinite tower of simple harmonic oscillators closely related, but not identical, to the partition function of 2D non-chiral free scalar field theory.

Between proper and square colorings of sparse graphs
An $i$-independent set is a set of vertices whose pairwise distance is at least $i+1$. A proper coloring (resp. a square coloring) of a graph is a partition of its vertices into independent (resp. $2$-independent) sets. A packing $(1^{\ell},2^k)$-coloring of a graph is a partition of its vertices into $\ell$ independent sets and $k$ $2$-independent sets; this is an intermediate coloring between proper coloring and square coloring. We investigate classes of sparse graphs that have a proper $(\ell+1)$-coloring but no packing $(1^{\ell},2^k)$-coloring for any finite $k$. The Four Color Theorem states that every planar graph is packing $(1^4)$-colorable, and Grötzsch's Theorem says every planar graph with girth at least $4$ is packing $(1^3)$-colorable. However, for every fixed $k$, we construct a planar graph with no packing $(1^{3},2^k)$-coloring and a planar graph with girth $6$ that has no packing $(1^{2},2^k)$-coloring. Moreover, for every positive integer $\ell$, we completely determine the minimum girth condition $g(\ell)$ for which every planar graph with girth at least $g(\ell)$ has a packing $(1^{\ell},2^{f(\ell)})$-coloring for some finite $f(\ell)$. Our results are actually in terms of maximum average degree. We also study the list version of packing colorings. We extend two results of Gastineau and Togni by showing every subcubic graph is both packing $(1^{1},2^6)$-choosable and packing $(1^{2},2^3)$-choosable, and our results are sharp. In addition, we strengthen Voigt's example of a planar graph that is not $4$-choosable by constructing a planar graph that is not packing $(1^{4},2^k)$-choosable for every positive integer $k$.

Colored base-3 partitions, sequences of polynomials, and perfect numbers
Motivated by the observation that the counting function of a certain base-3 colored partition contains the even perfect numbers as a subsequence, we begin by defining a sequence of polynomials in four variables and discuss their properties and combinatorial interpretations. We then concentrate on certain subsequences that are related to the Chebyshev polynomials of both kinds. Finally, we consider several sequences of single-variable polynomials that have meaningful combinatorial interpretations as well as interesting zero distributions.
