Colourings of cubic graphs inducing isomorphic monochromatic subgraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A $k$-bisection of a bridgeless cubic graph $G$ is a $2$-colouring of its vertex set such that the colour classes have the same cardinality and all connected components in the two subgraphs induced by the colour classes (monochromatic components in what follows) have order at most $k$. Ban and Linial conjectured that every bridgeless cubic graph admits a $2$-bisection except for the Petersen graph. A similar problem for the edge set of cubic graphs has been studied: Wormald conjectured that every cubic graph $G$ with $|E(G)| \equiv 0 \pmod 2$ has a $2$-edge colouring such that the two monochromatic subgraphs are isomorphic linear forests (i.e. a forest whose components are paths). Finally, Ando conjectured that every cubic graph admits a bisection such that the two induced monochromatic subgraphs are isomorphic. In this paper, we give a detailed insight into the conjectures of Ban-Linial and Wormald and provide evidence of a strong relation of both of them with Ando's conjecture. Furthermore, we also give computational and theoretical evidence in their support. As a result, we pose some open problems stronger than the above mentioned conjectures. Moreover, we prove Ban-Linial's conjecture for cubic cycle permutation graphs. As a by-product of studying $2$-edge colourings of cubic graphs having linear forests as monochromatic components, we also give a negative answer to a problem posed by Jackson and Wormald about certain decompositions of cubic graphs into linear forests.

On permutation trinomials of type $x^{2p^s+r}+x^{p^{s}+r} +λx^r$
We determine all permutation trinomials of type $x^{2p^s+r}+x^{p^s+r}+λx^r$ over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{p^t}$ when $(2p^s+r)^4<p^t$. This partially extends a previous result by Bhattacharya and Sarkar in the case $p=2$, $r=1$.
Holomorphic primary fields in free CFT4 and Calabi-Yau orbifolds
Published • View PublicationBIB
Counting formulae for general primary fields in free four dimensional conformal field theories of scalars, vectors and matrices are derived. These are specialised to count primaries which obey extremality conditions defined in terms of the dimensions and left or right spins (i.e. in terms of relations between the charges under the Cartan subgroup of $SO(4,2)$). The construction of primary fields for scalar field theory is mapped to a problem of determining multi-variable polynomials subject to a system of symmetry and differential constraints. For the extremal primaries, we give a construction in terms of holomorphic polynomial functions on permutation orbifolds, which are shown to be Calabi-Yau spaces.

Invariance: a Theoretical Approach for Coding Sets of Words Modulo Literal (Anti)Morphisms
Let $A$ be a finite or countable alphabet and let $θ$ be literal (anti)morphism onto $A^*$ (by definition, such a correspondence is determinated by a permutation of the alphabet). This paper deals with sets which are invariant under $θ$ ($θ$-invariant for short). We establish an extension of the famous defect theorem. Moreover, we prove that for the so-called thin $θ$-invariant codes, maximality and completeness are two equivalent notions. We prove that a similar property holds in the framework of some special families of $θ$-invariant codes such as prefix (bifix) codes, codes with a finite deciphering delay, uniformly synchronized codes and circular codes. For a special class of involutive antimorphisms, we prove that any regular $θ$-invariant code may be embedded into a complete one.

Equidistributions of Mahonian statistics over pattern avoiding permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
A Mahonian d-function is a Mahonian statistic that can be expressed as a linear combination of vincular pattern statistics of length at most d. Babson and Steingrimsson classified all Mahonian 3-functions up to trivial bijections and identified many of them with well-known Mahonian statistics in the literature. We prove a host of Mahonian 3-function equidistributions over pattern avoiding sets of permutations. Tools used include block decomposition, Dyck paths and generating functions.
Free quantum fields in 4D and Calabi-Yau spaces
Published in Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 161602 (2017) • View PublicationBIB
We develop general counting formulae for primary fields in free four dimensional (4D) scalar conformal field theory (CFT). Using a duality map between primary operators in scalar field theory and multi-variable polynomial functions subject to differential constraints, we identify a sector of holomorphic primary fields corresponding to polynomial functions on a class of permutation orbifolds. These orbifolds have palindromic Hilbert series, which indicates they are Calabi-Yau. We construct the top-dimensional holomorphic form expected from the Calabi-Yau property. This sector includes and extends previous constructions of infinite families of primary fields. We sketch the generalization of these results to free 4D vector and matrix CFTs.
Automatic discovery of structural rules of permutation classes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce an algorithm that conjectures the structure of a permutation class in the form of a disjoint cover of "rules"; similar to generalized grid classes. The cover is usually easily verified by a human and translated into an enumeration. The algorithm is successful on different inputs than other algorithms and can succeed with any polynomial permutation class. We apply it to every non-polynomial permutation class avoiding a set of length four patterns. The structures found by the algorithm can sometimes allow an enumeration of the permutation class with respect to permutation statistics, as well as choosing a permutation uniformly at random from the permutation class. We sketch a new algorithm formalizing the human verification of the conjectured covers.

K-classes of Brill-Noether loci and a determinantal formula
Published • View PublicationBIB
We compute the Euler characteristic of the structure sheaf of the Brill-Noether locus of linear series with special vanishing at up to two marked points. When the Brill-Noether number $ρ$ is zero, we recover the Castelnuovo formula for the number of special linear series on a general curve; when $ρ=1$, we recover the formulas of Eisenbud-Harris, Pirola, and Chan-Martín-Pflueger-Teixidor for the arithmetic genus of a Brill-Noether curve of special divisors. These computations are obtained as applications of a new determinantal formula for the K-theory class of certain degeneracy loci. Our degeneracy locus formula also specializes to new determinantal expressions for the double Grothendieck polynomials corresponding to 321-avoiding permutations, and gives double versions of the flagged skew Grothendieck polynomials recently introduced by Matsumura. Our result extends the formula of Billey-Jockusch-Stanley expressing Schubert polynomials for 321-avoiding permutations as generating functions for flagged skew tableaux.

Total proper connection and graph operations
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph is said to be {\it total-colored} if all the edges and vertices of the graph are colored. A path in a total-colored graph is a {\it total proper path} if $(i)$ any two adjacent edges on the path differ in color, $(ii)$ any two internal adjacent vertices on the path differ in color, and $(iii)$ any internal vertex of the path differs in color from its incident edges on the path. A total-colored graph is called {\it total-proper connected} if any two vertices of the graph are connected by a total proper path of the graph. For a connected graph $G$, the {\it total proper connection number} of $G$, denoted by $tpc(G)$, is defined as the smallest number of colors required to make $G$ total-proper connected. In this paper, we study the total proper connection number for the graph operations. We find that $3$ is the total proper connection number for the join, the lexicographic product and the strong product of nearly all graphs. Besides, we study three kinds of graphs with one factor to be traceable for the Cartesian product as well as the permutation graphs of the star and traceable graphs. The values of the total proper connection number for these graphs are all $3$.

On The Number Of Unlabeled Bipartite Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper solves a problem that was stated by M. A. Harrison in 1973~\cite{harrison1973number}. This problem, that has remained open since then is concerned with counting equivalence classes of $n\times r$ binary matrices under row and column permutations. Let $I$ and $O$ denote two sets of vertices, where $I\cap O =Φ$, $|I| = n$, $|O| = r$, and $B_u(n,r)$ denote the set of unlabeled graphs whose edges connect vertices in $I$ and $O$. Harrison established that the number of equivalence classes of $n\times r$ binary matrices is equal to the number of unlabeled graphs in $B_u(n,r).$ He also computed the number of such matrices (hence such graphs) for small values of $n$ and $r$ without providing an asymptotic formula $|B_u(n,r)|.$ Here, such an asymptotic formula is provided by proving the following two-sided equality using Polya's Counting Theorem.

On the Approximate Asymptotic Statistical Independence of the Permanents of 0-1 Matrices
We consider the ensemble of n x n 0 - 1 matrices with all column and row sums equal r. We give this ensemble the uniform weighting to construct a measure E. We know from the work of Wanless and Pernici that E(prod_{i=1}^N (perm_{m_i}(A)) = prod_{i=1}^N (E(perm_{m_i}(A)) * (1+ O(1/n^4)) In this paper we prove E_1(prod_{i=1}^N (perm_{m_i}(A)) = prod_{i=1}^N (E_1(perm_{m_i}(A)) * (1+ O(1/n^2)) where E_1 is the measure constructed on the ensemble of n x n 0 - 1 matrices with non-negative integer entries realized as the sum of r random permutation matrices. E_1 is often used as an "approximation" to E. We have computer evidence for E_1(prod_{i=1}^N (perm_{m_i}(A)) = prod_{i=1}^N (E_1(perm_{m_i}(A)) * (1+ O(1/n^4)).

A combinatorial approach to Rauzy-type dynamics I: permutations and the Kontsevich--Zorich--Boissy classification theorem
Rauzy-type dynamics are group actions on a collection of combinatorial objects. The first and best known example concerns an action on permutations, associated to interval exchange transformations (IET) for the Poincaré map on compact orientable translation surfaces. The equivalence classes on the objects induced by the group action are related to components of the moduli spaces of Abelian differentials with prescribed singularities, and, in two variants of the problem, have been classified by Kontsevich and Zorich, and by Boissy, through methods involving both combinatorics and algebraic geometry. We provide here a purely combinatorial proof of both classification theorems, and in passing establish a few previously unnoticed features. As will be shown elsewhere, our methods extend also to other Rauzy-type dynamics, both on labeled and unlabeled structures. Some of these dynamics have a geometrical interpretation (e.g., matchings, related to IET on non-orientable surfaces), while some others do not have one so far.

Enumeration of small Wilf classes avoiding 1324 and two other 4-letter patterns
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, it has been determined that there are 242 Wilf classes of triples of 4-letter permutation patterns by showing that there are 32 non-singleton Wilf classes. Moreover, the generating function for each triple lying in a non-singleton Wilf class has been explicitly determined. In this paper, toward the goal of enumerating avoiders for the singleton Wilf classes, we obtain the generating function for all but one of the triples containing 1324. (The exceptional triple is conjectured to be intractable.) Our methods are both combinatorial and analytic, including generating trees, recurrence relations, and decompositions by left-right maxima. Sometimes this leads to an algebraic equation for the generating function, sometimes to a functional equation or a multi-index recurrence amenable to the kernel method.

Quadrant marked mesh patterns in 123-avoiding permutations

Given a permutation $σ= σ_1 \ldots σ_n$ in the symmetric group $\mathcal{S}_{n}$, we say that $σ_i$ matches the quadrant marked mesh pattern $\mathrm{MMP}(a,b,c,d)$ in $σ$ if there are at least $a$ points to the right of $σ_i$ in $σ$ which are greater than $σ_i$, at least $b$ points to the left of $σ_i$ in $σ$ which are greater than $σ_i$, at least $c$ points to the left of $σ_i$ in $σ$ which are smaller than $σ_i$, and at least $d$ points to the right of $σ_i$ in $σ$ which are smaller than $σ_i$. Kitaev, Remmel, and Tiefenbruck systematically studied the distribution of the number of matches of $\mathrm{MMP}(a,b,c,d)$ in 132-avoiding permutations. The operation of reverse and complement on permutations allow one to translate their results to find the distribution of the number of $\mathrm{MMP}(a,b,c,d)$ matches in 231-avoiding, 213-avoiding, and 312-avoiding permutations. In this paper, we study the distribution of the number of matches of $\mathrm{MMP}(a,b,c,d)$ in 123-avoiding permutations. We provide explicit recurrence relations to enumerate our objects which can be used to give closed forms for the generating functions associated with such distributions. In many cases, we provide combinatorial explanations of the coefficients that appear in our generating functions.
On consecutive pattern-avoiding permutations of length 4, 5 and beyond
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 19 no. 2, Permutation Patterns 2016, Permutation Patterns (February 26, 2018) dmtcs:3311 • View PublicationBIB
We review and extend what is known about the generating functions for consecutive pattern-avoiding permutations of length 4, 5 and beyond, and their asymptotic behaviour. There are respectively, seven length-4 and twenty-five length-5 consecutive-Wilf classes. D-finite differential equations are known for the reciprocal of the exponential generating functions for four of the length-4 and eight of the length-5 classes. We give the solutions of some of these ODEs. An unsolved functional equation is known for one more class of length-4, length-5 and beyond. We give the solution of this functional equation, and use it to show that the solution is not D-finite. For three further length-5 c-Wilf classes we give recurrences for two and a differential-functional equation for a third. For a fourth class we find a new algebraic solution. We give a polynomial-time algorithm to generate the coefficients of the generating functions which is faster than existing algorithms, and use this to (a) calculate the asymptotics for all classes of length 4 and length 5 to significantly greater precision than previously, and (b) use these extended series to search, unsuccessfully, for D-finite solutions for the unsolved classes, leading us to conjecture that the solutions are not D-finite. We have also searched, unsuccessfully, for differentially algebraic solutions.
Pattern Avoidance in Reverse Double Lists
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 19 no. 2, Permutation Patterns 2016, Permutation Patterns (October 29, 2018) dmtcs:3289 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we consider pattern avoidance in a subset of words on $\{1,1,2,2,\dots,n,n\}$ called reverse double lists. In particular a reverse double list is a word formed by concatenating a permutation with its reversal. We enumerate reverse double lists avoiding any permutation pattern of length at most 4 and completely determine the corresponding Wilf classes. For permutation patterns $ρ$ of length 5 or more, we characterize when the number of $ρ$-avoiding reverse double lists on $n$ letters has polynomial growth. We also determine the number of $1\cdots k$-avoiders of maximum length for any positive integer $k$.

Splittability and 1-amalgamability of permutation classes
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 19 no. 2, Permutation Patterns 2016, Permutation Patterns (December 5, 2017) dmtcs:3292 • View PublicationBIB
A permutation class $C$ is splittable if it is contained in a merge of two of its proper subclasses, and it is 1-amalgamable if given two permutations $σ$ and $τ$ in $C$, each with a marked element, we can find a permutation $π$ in $C$ containing both $σ$ and $τ$ such that the two marked elements coincide. It was previously shown that unsplittability implies 1-amalgamability. We prove that unsplittability and 1-amalgamability are not equivalent properties of permutation classes by showing that the class $Av(1423, 1342)$ is both splittable and 1-amalgamable. Our construction is based on the concept of LR-inflations, which we introduce here and which may be of independent interest.

Equivalence classes of mesh patterns with a dominating pattern
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 19 no. 2, Permutation Patterns 2016, Permutation Patterns (February 9, 2018) dmtcs:3283 • View PublicationBIB
Two mesh patterns are coincident if they are avoided by the same set of permutations, and are Wilf-equivalent if they have the same number of avoiders of each length. We provide sufficient conditions for coincidence of mesh patterns, when only permutations also avoiding a longer classical pattern are considered. Using these conditions we completely classify coincidences between families containing a mesh pattern of length 2 and a classical pattern of length 3. Furthermore, we completely Wilf-classify mesh patterns of length 2 inside the class of 231-avoiding permutations.
Positive definite functions on Coxeter groups with applications to operator spaces and noncommutative probability
Published • View PublicationBIB
A new class of positive definite functions related to colour-length function on arbitrary Coxeter group is introduced. Extensions of positive definite functions, called the Riesz-Coxeter product, from the Riesz product on the Rademacher (Abelian Coxeter) group to arbitrary Coxeter group is obtained. Applications to harmonic analysis, operator spaces and noncommutative probability is presented. Characterization of radial and colour-radial functions on dihedral groups and infinite permutation group are shown.
