Bisections of mass assignments using flags of affine spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
We use recent extensions of the Borsuk--Ulam theorem for Stiefel manifolds to generalize the ham sandwich theorem to mass assignments. A $k$-dimensional mass assignment continuously imposes a measure on each $k$-dimensional affine subspace of $\mathbb{R}^d$. Given a finite collection of mass assignments of different dimensions, one may ask if there is some sequence of affine subspaces $S_{k-1} \subset S_k \subset \ldots \subset S_{d-1} \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ such that $S_i$ bisects all the mass assignments on $S_{i+1}$ for every $i$. We show it is possible to do so whenever the number of mass assignments of dimensions $(k,\ldots,d)$ is a permutation of $(k,\ldots,d)$. We extend previous work on mass assignments and the central transversal theorem. We also study the problem of halving several families of $(d-k)$-dimensional affine spaces of $\mathbb{R}^d$ using a $(k-1)$-dimensional affine subspace contained in some translate of a fixed $k$-dimensional affine space. For $k=d-1$, there results can be interpreted as dynamic ham sandwich theorems for families of moving points.

Permanent identities, combinatorial sequences, and permutation statistics
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we confirm six conjectures on the exact values of some permanents, relating them to the Genocchi numbers of the first and second kinds as well as the Euler numbers. For example, we prove that $$\mathrm{per}\left[\left\lfloor\frac{2j-k}{n}\right\rfloor\right]_{1\le j,k\le n}=2(2^{n+1}-1)B_{n+1},$$ where $B_0,B_1,B_2,\ldots$ are the Bernoulli numbers. We also show that $$ \mathrm{per}\left[\mathrm{sgn}\left(\cosπ\frac{i+j}{n+1}\right)\right]_{1\le i,j\le n}=\begin{cases} -\sum_{k=0}^m\binom{m}{k}E_{2k+1}&\quad\text{if}\ n=2m+1,\\ \sum_{k=0}^m\binom{m}{k}E_{2k}&\quad\text{if}\ n=2m, \end{cases} $$ where $\mathrm{sgn}(x)$ is the sign function, and $E_0,E_1,E_2,\ldots$ are the Euler (zigzag) numbers. In the course of linking the evaluation of these permanents to the aforementioned combinatorial sequences, the classical permutation statistic -- the excedance number, together with several kinds of its variants, plays a central role. Our approach features recurrence relations, bijections, as well as certain elementary operations on matrices that preserve their permanents. Moreover, our proof of the second permanent identity leads to a proof of Bala's conjectural continued fraction formula, and an unexpected permutation interpretation for the $γ$-coefficients of the $2$-Eulerian polynomials.

Clustering of consecutive numbers in permutations avoiding a pattern and in separable permutations
Let $S_n$ denote the set of permutations of $[n]:=\{1,\cdots, n\}$, and denote a permutation $σ\in S_n$ by $σ=σ_1σ_2\cdots σ_n$. For $l\ge2$ an integer, let $A^{(n)}_{l;k}\subset S_n$ denote the event that the set of $l$ consecutive numbers $\{k, k+1,\cdots, k+l-1\}$ appears in a set of consecutive positions: $\{k,k+1,\cdots, k+l-1\}=\{σ_a,σ_{a+1},\cdots, σ_{a+l-1}\}$, for some $a$. For $τ\in S_m$, let $S_n(τ)$ denote the set of $τ$-avoiding permutations in $S_n$, and let $P_n^{\text{av}(τ)}$ denote the uniform probability measure on $S_n(τ)$. Also, let $S_n^{\text{sep}}$ denote the set of separable permutations in $S_n$, and let $P_n^{\text{sep}}$ denote the uniform probability measure on $S_n^{\text{sep}}$. We investigate the quantities $P_n^{\text{av}(τ)}(A^{(n)}_{l;k})$ and $P_n^{\text{sep}}(A^{(n)}_{l;k})$ for fixed $n$, and the limiting behavior as $n\to\infty$. We also consider the asymptotic properties of this limiting behavior as $l\to\infty$.

Moments of permutation statistics and central limit theorems
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that if a permutation statistic can be written as a linear combination of bivincular patterns, then its moments can be expressed as a linear combination of factorials with constant coefficients. This generalizes a result of Zeilberger. We use an approach of Chern, Diaconis, Kane and Rhoades, previously applied on set partitions and matchings. In addition, we give a new proof of the central limit theorem (CLT) for the number of occurrences of classical patterns, which uses a lemma of Burstein and Hasto. We give a simple interpretation of this lemma and an analogous lemma that would imply the CLT for the number of occurrences of any vincular pattern. Furthermore, we obtain explicit formulas for the moments of the descents and the minimal descents statistics. The latter is used to give a new direct proof of the fact that we do not necessarily have asymptotic normality of the number of pattern occurrences in the case of bivincular patterns. Closed forms for some of the higher moments of several popular statistics on permutations are also obtained.

Partition models, Permutations of infinite sets without fixed points, and weak forms of AC
We study new relations of the following statements with weak choice principles in ZF and ZFA. 1. There does not exist an infinite Hausdorff space X such that every infinite subset of X contains an infinite compact subset. 2. If a field has an algebraic closure then it is unique up to isomorphism. 3. For every infinite set X, there exists a permutation of X without fixed points. Moreover, we prove that the principle ``Any infinite locally finite connected graph has a spanning m-bush for any even integer m greater than or equal to 4'' is equivalent to Kőnig's Lemma in ZF. We also study the new status of different weak choice principles in the finite partition model (a type of permutation model) introduced by B.B. Bruce in 2016. Further, we prove that Van Douwen's Choice Principle holds in two recently constructed known permutation models.

On Pless symmetry codes, ternary QR codes, and related Hadamard matrices and designs
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is proved that a code $L(q)$ which is monomially equivalent to the Pless symmetry code $C(q)$ of length $2q+2$ contains the (0,1)-incidence matrix of a Hadamard 3-$(2q+2,q+1,(q-1)/2)$ design $D(q)$ associated with a Paley-Hadamard matrix of type II. Similarly, any ternary extended quadratic residue code contains the incidence matrix of a Hadamard 3-design associated with a Paley-Hadamard matrix of type I. If $q=5, 11, 17, 23$, then the full permutation automorphism group of $L(q)$ coincides with the full automorphism group of $D(q)$, and a similar result holds for the ternary extended quadratic residue codes of lengths 24 and 48. All Hadamard matrices of order 36 formed by codewords of the Pless symmetry code $C(17)$ are enumerated and classified up to equivalence. There are two equivalence classes of such matrices: the Paley-Hadamard matrix $H$ of type I with a full automorphism group of order 19584, and a second regular Hadamard matrix $H'$ such that the symmetric 2-$(36,15,6)$ design $D$ associated with $H'$ has trivial full automorphism group, and the incidence matrix of $D$ spans a ternary code equivalent to $C(17)$.

A Generalization of Descent Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
The notion of a descent polynomial, a function in enumerative combinatorics that counts permutations with specific properties, enjoys a revived recent research interest due to its connection with other important notions in combinatorics, viz. peak polynomials and symmetric functions. We define the function $\mathfrak{d}^{m}(I,n)$ as a generalization of the descent polynomial and we prove that for any positive integer $m$, this function is a polynomial in $n$ for sufficiently large $n$ (similarly to the descent polynomial). We obtain an explicit formula for $\mathfrak{d}^{m}(I,n)$ when $m$ is sufficiently large. We look at the coefficients of $\mathfrak{d}^{m}(I,n)$ in different falling factorial bases. We prove the positivity of the coefficients and discover a combinatorial interpretation for them. This result is similar to the positivity result of Diaz-Lopez et al. for the descent polynomial.

On the Representation Number of Bipartite Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A word-representable graph is a simple graph $G$ which can be represented by a word $w$ over the vertices of $G$ such that any two vertices are adjacent in $G$ if and only if they alternate in $w$. It is known that the class of comparability graphs -- the graphs which admit a transitive orientation -- is precisely the class of graphs that can be represented by a concatenation of permutations of vertices. The class of bipartite graphs is a subclass of comparability graphs. While it is an open problem to determine the representation number of comparability graphs, it was conjectured that the representation number of bipartite graphs on $n$ vertices is at most $n/4$. In this paper, we propose a polynomial time relabeling algorithm to produce a word representing a given bipartite graph which is a concatenation of permutations of the graph's vertices. Thus we obtain an upper bound for the representation number of bipartite graphs, which in turn gives us an upper bound for the dimension of the posets corresponding to bipartite graphs.

On a huge family of non-schurian Schur rings
Published • View PublicationBIB
In his famous monograph on permutation groups, H.~Wielandt gives an example of a Schur ring over an elementary abelian group of order $p^2$ ($p>3$ is a prime), which is non-schurian, that is, it is the transitivity module of no permutation group. Generalizing this example, we construct a huge family of non-schurian Schur rings over elementary abelian groups of even rank.

The lengths for which bicrucial square-free permutations exist
Published • View PublicationBIB
A square is a factor $S = (S_1; S_2)$ where $S_1$ and $S_2$ have the same pattern, and a permutation is said to be square-free if it contains no non-trivial squares. The permutation is further said to be bicrucial if every extension to the left or right contains a square. We completely classify for which $n$ there exists a bicrucial square-free permutation of length $n$.

On the number of inequivalent monotone Boolean functions of 8 variables
In this paper, the author presents algorithms that allow determining the number of fixed points in permutations of a set of monotone Boolean functions. Then, using Burnside's lemma, the author determines the number of inequivalent monotone Boolean functions of 8 variables. The number obtained is 1,392,195,548,889,993,358.

Doubly stochastic matrices and Schur-Weyl duality for partition algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the permutations of $\{1,\dots, n\}$ having an increasing (resp., decreasing) subsequence of length $n-r$ index a subset of the set of all $r$th Kronecker powers of $n \times n$ permutation matrices which is a basis for the linear span of that set. Thanks to a known Schur--Weyl duality, this gives a new basis for the centralizer algebra of the partition algebra acting on the $r$th tensor power of a vector space. We give some related results on the set of doubly stochastic matrices in that algebra.
The spectral property of hypergraph coverings
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Volume 347, Issue 3, March 2024, 113830 • View PublicationBIB
Let $H$ be a connected $m$-uniform hypergraph, and let $\mathcal{A}(H)$ be the adjacency tensor of $H$ whose spectrum is simply called the spectrum of $H$. Let $s(H)$ denote the number of eigenvectors of $\mathcal{A}(H)$ associated with the spectral radius, and $c(H)$ denote the number of eigenvalues of $\mathcal{A}(H)$ with modulus equal to the spectral radius, which are respectively called the stabilizing index and cyclic index of $H$. Let $\bar{H}$ be a $k$-fold covering of $H$ which can be obtained from some permutation assignment in the symmetric group $\mathbf{S}_k$ on $H$. In this paper, we first characterize the connectedness of $\bar{H}$ by its incidence graph and the permutation assignment, and then investigate the relationship between the spectral property of $H$ and that of $\bar{H}$. By applying module theory and group representation, if $\bar{H}$ is connected, we prove that $s(H) \mid s(\bar{H})$ and $c(H) \mid c(\bar{H})$. In particular, when $\bar{H}$ is a $2$-fold covering of $H$, if $m$ is even, we show that regardless of multiplicities, the spectrum of $\bar{H}$ contains the spectrum of $H$ and the spectrum of a signed hypergraph with $H$ as underlying hypergraph; if $m$ is odd, we give an explicit formula for $s(\bar{H})$. We also find some differences on the spectral property between hypergraph coverings and graph coverings by examples.

Cutoff for Rewiring Dynamics on Perfect Matchings
Published in Ann. Appl. Probab. 33(1): 641-676 (February 2023) • View PublicationBIB
We establish cutoff for a natural random walk (RW) on the set of perfect matchings (PMs). An $n$-PM is a pairing of $2n$ objects. The $k$-PM RW selects $k$ pairs uniformly at random, disassociates the corresponding $2k$ objects, then chooses a new pairing on these $2k$ objects uniformly at random. The equilibrium distribution is uniform over the set of all $n$-PM. We establish cutoff for the $k$-PM RW whenever $2 \le k \ll n$. If $k \gg 1$, then the mixing time is $\tfrac nk \log n$ to leading order. The case $k = 2$ was established by Diaconis and Holmes (2002) by relating the $2$-PM RW to the random transpositions card shuffle and also by Ceccherini-Silberstein, Scarabotti and Tolli (2007, 2008) using representation theory. We are the first to handle $k > 2$. Our argument builds on previous work of Berestycki, Schramm, Şengül and Zeitouni (2005, 2011, 2019) regarding conjugacy-invariant RWs on the permutation group.

On the extremal values of the cyclic continuants of Motzkin and Straus
In a 1983 paper, G. Ramharter asks what are the extremal arrangements for the cyclic analogues of the regular and semi-regular continuants first introduced by T.S. Motzkin and E.G. Straus in 1956. In this paper we answer this question by showing that for each set $A$ consisting of positive integers $1<a_1<a_2<\cdots <a_k$ and a $k$-term partition $P: n_1+n_2 + \cdots + n_k=n$, there exists a unique (up to reversal) cyclic word $x$ which maximizes (resp. minimizes) the regular cyclic continuant $K^{\circlearrowright}(\cdot)$ amongst all cyclic words over $A$ with Parikh vector $(n_1,n_2,\ldots,n_k)$. We also show that the same is true for the minimizing arrangement for the semi-regular cyclic continuant $\dot K^{\circlearrowright}(\cdot)$. As in the non-cyclic case, the main difficulty is to find the maximizing arrangement for the semi-regular continuant, which is not unique in general and may depend on the integers $a_1,\ldots,a_k$ and not just on their relative order. We show that if a cyclic word $x$ maximizes $\dot K^{\circlearrowright}(\cdot)$ amongst all permutations of $x$, then it verifies a strong combinatorial condition which we call the singular property. We develop an algorithm for constructing all singular cyclic words having a prescribed Parikh vector.

A lifting of the Goulden-Jackson cluster method to the Malvenuto-Reutenauer algebra
Published in Algebr. Comb. 5(6): 1391-1425, 2022 • View PublicationBIB
The Goulden-Jackson cluster method is a powerful tool for counting words by occurrences of prescribed subwords, and was adapted by Elizalde and Noy for counting permutations by occurrences of prescribed consecutive patterns. In this paper, we lift the cluster method for permutations to the Malvenuto-Reutenauer algebra. Upon applying standard homomorphisms, our result specializes to both the cluster method for permutations as well as a q-analogue which keeps track of the inversion number statistic. We construct additional homomorphisms using the theory of shuffle-compatibility, leading to further specializations which keep track of various "inverse statistics", including the inverse descent number, inverse peak number, and inverse left peak number. This approach is then used to derive formulas for counting permutations by occurrences of two families of consecutive patterns -- monotone patterns and transpositional patterns -- refined by these statistics.
Finite Free Cumulants: Multiplicative Convolutions, Genus Expansion and Infinitesimal Distributions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given two polynomials $p(x), q(x)$ of degree $d$, we give a combinatorial formula for the finite free cumulants of $p(x)\boxtimes_d q(x)$. We show that this formula admits a topological expansion in terms of non-crossing multi-annular permutations on surfaces of different genera. This topological expansion, on the one hand, deepens the connection between the theories of finite free probability and free probability, and in particular proves that $\boxtimes_d$ converges to $\boxtimes$ as $d$ goes to infinity. On the other hand, borrowing tools from the theory of second order freeness, we use our expansion to study the infinitesimal distribution of certain families of polynomials which include Hermite and Laguerre, and draw some connections with the theory of infinitesimal distributions for real random matrices. Finally, building off our results we give a new short and conceptual proof of a recent result [Steinerberger (2020), Hoskins and Kabluchko (2020)] that connects root distributions of polynomial derivatives with free fractional convolution powers.
Permutations whose reverse shares the same recording tableau in the RSK correspondence
Published in Séminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire, B86a (2022), 15 pp • Search Publication
The RSK correspondence is a bijection between permutations and pairs of standard Young tableaux with identical shape, where the tableaux are commonly denoted $P$ (insertion) and $Q$ (recording). It has been an open problem to demonstrate $$ |\{w \in \mathfrak{S}_n | \, Q(w) = Q(w^r)\}| = \begin{cases} \displaystyle 2^{\frac{n-1}{2}}{n-1 \choose \frac{n-1}{2}} & n \text{ odd} \newline \displaystyle 0 & n \text{ even} \end{cases}, $$ where $w^r$ is the reverse permutation of $w$. First we show that for each $w$ where $Q(w) = Q(w^r)$ the recording tableau $Q(w)$ has a symmetric hook shape and satisfies a certain simple property. From these two results, we succeed in proving the desired identity.

Star transposition Gray codes for multiset permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given integers $k\geq 2$ and $a_1,\ldots,a_k\geq 1$, let $\boldsymbol{a}:=(a_1,\ldots,a_k)$ and $n:=a_1+\cdots+a_k$. An $\boldsymbol{a}$-multiset permutation is a string of length $n$ that contains exactly $a_i$ symbols $i$ for each $i=1,\ldots,k$. In this work we consider the problem of exhaustively generating all $\boldsymbol{a}$-multiset permutations by star transpositions, i.e., in each step, the first entry of the string is transposed with any other entry distinct from the first one. This is a far-ranging generalization of several known results. For example, it is known that permutations ($a_1=\cdots=a_k=1$) can be generated by star transpositions, while combinations ($k=2$) can be generated by these operations if and only if they are balanced ($a_1=a_2$), with the positive case following from the middle levels theorem. To understand the problem in general, we introduce a parameter $Δ(\boldsymbol{a}):=n-2\max\{a_1,\ldots,a_k\}$ that allows us to distinguish three different regimes for this problem. We show that if $Δ(\boldsymbol{a})<0$, then a star transposition Gray code for $\boldsymbol{a}$-multiset permutations does not exist. We also construct such Gray codes for the case $Δ(\boldsymbol{a})>0$, assuming that they exist for the case $Δ(\boldsymbol{a})=0$. For the case $Δ(\boldsymbol{a})=0$ we present some partial positive results. Our proofs establish Hamilton-connectedness or Hamilton-laceability of the underlying flip graphs, and they answer several cases of a recent conjecture of Shen and Williams. In particular, we prove that the middle levels graph is Hamilton-laceable.

Deformed Polynuclear Growth in $(1+1)$ Dimensions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce and study a one parameter deformation of the polynuclear growth (PNG) in $(1+1)$-dimensions, which we call the $t$-PNG model. It is defined by requiring that, when two expanding islands merge, with probability $t$ they sprout another island on top of the merging location. At $t=0$, this becomes the standard (non-deformed) PNG model that, in the droplet geometry, can be reformulated through longest increasing subsequences of uniformly random permutations or through an algorithm known as patience sorting. In terms of the latter, the $t$-PNG model allows errors to occur in the sorting algorithm with probability $t$. We prove that the $t$-PNG model exhibits one-point Tracy-Widom GUE asymptotics at large times for any fixed $t\in [0,1)$, and one-point convergence to the narrow wedge solution of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation as $t$ tends to $1$. We further construct distributions for an external source that are likely to induce Baik-Ben Arous-Peche type phase transitions. The proofs are based on solvable stochastic vertex models and their connection to the determinantal point processes arising from Schur measures on partitions.
