On the preferred extensions of argumentation frameworks: bijections with naive sets
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper deals with the problem of finding the preferred extensions of an argumentation framework by means of a bijection with the naive sets of another framework. First, we consider the case where an argumentation framework is naive-bijective: its naive sets and preferred extensions are equal. Recognizing naive-bijective argumentation frameworks is hard, but we show that it is tractable for frameworks with bounded in-degree. Next, we give a bijection between the preferred extensions of an argumentation framework being admissible-closed (the intersection of two admissible sets is admissible) and the naive sets of another framework on the same set of arguments. On the other hand, we prove that identifying admissible-closed argumentation frameworks is coNP-complete. At last, we introduce the notion of irreducible self-defending sets as those that are not the union of others. It turns out there exists a bijection between the preferred extensions of an argumentation framework and the naive sets of a framework on its irreducible self-defending sets. Consequently, the preferred extensions of argumentation frameworks with some lattice properties can be listed with polynomial delay and polynomial space.

Hierarchical decompositions of implicational bases for the enumeration of meet-irreducible elements
Published • View PublicationBIB
We are interested in the problem of translating between two representations of closure systems, namely implicational bases and meet-irreducible elements. Albeit its importance, the problem is open. Motivated by this problem, we introduce splits of an implicational base. It is a partitioning operation of the implications which we apply recursively to obtain a binary tree representing a decomposition of the implicational base. We show that this decomposition can be conducted in polynomial time and space in the size of the input implicational base. In order to use our decomposition for the translation task, we focus on the case of acyclic splits. In this case, we obtain a recursive characterization of the meet-irreducible elements of the associated closure system. We use this characterization and hypergraph dualization to derive new results for the translation problem in acyclic convex geometries.

Polynomial bounds for chromatic number. V. Excluding a tree of radius two and a complete multipartite graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Gyárfás-Sumner conjecture says that for every forest $H$ and every integer $k$, if $G$ is $H$-free and does not contain a clique on $k$ vertices then it has bounded chromatic number. (A graph is $H$-free if it does not contain an induced copy of $H$.) Kierstead and Penrice proved it for trees of radius at most two, but otherwise the conjecture is known only for a few simple types of forest. More is known if we exclude a complete bipartite subgraph instead of a clique: Rödl showed that, for every forest $H$, if $G$ is $H$-free and does not contain $K_{t,t}$ as a subgraph then it has bounded chromatic number. In an earlier paper with Sophie Spirkl, we strengthened Rödl's result, showing that for every forest $H$, the bound on chromatic number can be taken to be polynomial in $t$. In this paper, we prove a related strengthening of the Kierstead-Penrice theorem, showing that for every tree $H$ of radius two and every integer $d\ge 2$, if $G$ is $H$-free and does not contain as a subgraph the complete $d$-partite graph with parts of cardinality $t$, then its chromatic number is at most polynomial in $t$.

On distribution of the depth index on perfect matchings
We study the restriction of depth index statistic on the set of perfect matchings. In particular, we provide additional combinatorial description of the statistic for perfect matchings and calculate the generating polynomial. The main result of the present short paper is that the depth index on perfect matchings is equidistributed with the rank function of the Bruhat order.

The tropical discriminant of a polynomial map on a plane
The discriminant of a polynomial map is central to problems from affine geometry and singularity theory. Standard methods for characterizing it rely on elimination techniques that can often be ineffective. This paper concerns polynomial maps on the two-dimensional torus defined over a field of Puiseux series. We present a combinatorial procedure for computing the tropical curve of the discriminant of maps determined by generic polynomials with given supports. Our results enable one to compute the Newton polytope of the discriminant of complex polynomial maps on the plane.

Strong persistence and associated prime of powers of monomial ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $R=K[x_1,\ldots, x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $K$ and $I$ be a monomial ideal of degree $d\leq 2$. We show that $(I^{k+1}:I)=I^k$ for all $k\geq 1$ and we disprove a motivation question that was appeared in \cite[Question 2.51]{CHHV} by providing of a counterexample. Also, by this counterexample, we give a negative answer to the question that depth function of square-free monomial ideals are non-increasing.

Counting Kernels in Directed Graphs with Arbitrary Orientations
Published • View PublicationBIB
A kernel of a directed graph is a subset of vertices that is both independent and absorbing (every vertex not in the kernel has an out-neighbour in the kernel). Not all directed graphs contain kernels, and computing a kernel or deciding that none exist is NP-complete even on low-degree planar digraphs. The existing polynomial-time algorithms for this problem all restrict both the undirected structure and the edge orientations of the input: for example, to chordal graphs without bidirectional edges (Pass-Lanneau, Igarashi and Meunier, Discrete Appl Math 2020) or to permutation graphs where each clique has a sink (Abbas and Saoula, 4OR 2005). By contrast, we count the kernels of a fuzzy circular interval graph in polynomial time, regardless of its edge orientations, and return a kernel when one exists. (Fuzzy circular graphs were introduced by Chudnovsky and Seymour in their structure theorem for claw-free graphs.) We also consider kernels on cographs, where we establish NP-hardness in general but linear running times on the subclass of threshold graphs.

A limiting result for the Ramsey theory of functional equations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study systems of functional equations whose solutions can be parameterized in function of one variable; our main result proves that the partition regularity (PR) of such systems can be completely characterized by the existence of constant solutions. As applications of this result, we prove the following: (1) A complete characterization of the PR of systems of Diophantine equations in two variables over $\mathbb{N}$. In particular, we prove that the only infinitely PR irreducible equation in two variables is $x=y$; (2) PR of $S$-unit equations and the failure of Rado's Theorem for finitely generated multiplicative subgroups of $\mathbb{C}$; and (3) a complete characterization of the PR of two classes of polynomial exponential equations.

A generalisation of quasi-shuffle algebras and an application to multiple zeta values
A large family of relations among multiple zeta values may be described using the combinatorics of shuffle and quasi-shuffle algebras. While the structure of shuffle algebras have been well understood for some time now, quasi-shuffle algebras were only formally studied relatively recently. In particular, Hoffman gives a thorough discussion of the algebraic structure, including a choice of algebra basis, and applies his results to produce families of relations among multiple zeta values and their generalisations. In a recent preprint, Hirose and Sato establish a family of relations coming from a new generalised shuffle structure, lifting a set of graded relations established by the author to genuine ungraded relations. In this paper, we define a commutative algebra structure on the space of non-commutative polynomials in a countable alphabet, generalising the shuffle-like structure of Hirose and Sato. We show that, over the rational numbers, this generalised quasi-shuffle algebra is isomorphic to the standard shuffle algebra, allowing us to reproduce most of Hoffman's results on quasi-shuffle algebras. We then apply these results to the case of multiple zeta values, reproducing several known families of results and establishing several more.

Coefficientwise Hankel-total positivity of the row-generating polynomials for the output matrices of certain production matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
Total positivity of matrices is deeply studied and plays an important role in various branches of mathematics. The aim of this paper is to study the criteria for coefficientwise Hankel-total positivity of the row-generating polynomials of generalized $m$-Jacobi-Rogers triangles and their applications. Using the theory of production matrices, we present the criteria for coefficientwise Hankel-total positivity of the row-generating polynomials of the output matrices of certain production matrices. In particular, we gain a criterion for coefficientwise Hankel-total positivity of the row-generating polynomial sequence of the generalized $m$-Jacobi-Rogers triangle. This immediately implies that the corresponding generalized $m$-Jacobi-Rogers triangular convolution preserves the Stieltjes moment property of sequences and its zeroth column sequence is coefficientwise Hankel-totally positive and log-convex of higher order in all the indeterminates. In consequence, for $m=1$, we immediately obtain some results on Hankel-total positivity for the Catalan-Stieltjes matrices. In particular, we in a unified manner apply our results to some combinatorial triangles or polynomials including the generalized Jacobi Stirling triangle, a generalized elliptic polynomial, a refined Stirling cycle polynomial and a refined Eulerian polynomial. For the general $m$, combining our criterion and a function satisfying an autonomous differential equation, we present different criteria for coefficientwise Hankel-total positivity of the row-generating polynomial sequence of exponential Rirodan arrays. In addition, we also derive some results for coefficientwise Hankel-total positivity in terms of compositional functions and $m$-branched Stieltjes-type continued fractions. We apply our results to many combinatorial polynomials and solve some conjcetures proposed by Sokal.

Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of ladder determinantal varieties and patches of Grassmannian Schubert varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give degree formulas for Grothendieck polynomials indexed by vexillary permutations and $1432$-avoiding permutations via tableau combinatorics. These formulas generalize a formula for degrees of symmetric Grothendieck polynomials which appeared in previous joint work of the authors with Y. Ren and A. St. Dizier. We apply our formulas to compute Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of classes of generalized determinantal ideals. In particular, we give combinatorial formulas for the regularities of all one-sided mixed ladder determinantal ideals. We also derive formulas for the regularities of certain Kazhdan-Lusztig ideals, including those coming from open patches of Schubert varieties in Grassmannians. This provides a correction to a conjecture of Kummini-Lakshmibai-Sastry-Seshadri (2015).

Proof of a conjectured Möbius inversion formula for Grothendieck polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Schubert polynomials $\mathfrak{S}_w$ are polynomial representatives for cohomology classes of Schubert varieties in a complete flag variety, while Grothendieck polynomials $\mathfrak{G}_w$ are analogous representatives for the $K$-theory classes of the structure sheaves of Schubert varieties. In the special case that $\mathfrak{S}_w$ is a multiplicity-free sum of monomials, K. Mészáros, L. Setiabrata, and A. St. Dizier conjectured that $\mathfrak{G}_w$ can be easily computed from $\mathfrak{S}_w$ via Möbius inversion on a certain poset. We prove this conjecture.
On the List Color Function Threshold
Published • View PublicationBIB
The chromatic polynomial of a graph $G$, denoted $P(G,m)$, is equal to the number of proper $m$-colorings of $G$. The list color function of graph $G$, denoted $P_{\ell}(G,m)$, is a list analogue of the chromatic polynomial that has been studied since the early 1990s, primarily through comparisons with the corresponding chromatic polynomial. It is known that for any graph $G$ there is a $k \in \mathbb{N}$ such that $P_\ell(G,m) = P(G,m)$ whenever $m \geq k$. The list color function threshold of $G$, denoted $τ(G)$, is the smallest $k \geq χ(G)$ such that $P_{\ell}(G,m) = P(G,m)$ whenever $m \geq k$. In 2009, Thomassen asked whether there is a universal constant $α$ such that for any graph $G$, $τ(G) \leq χ_{\ell}(G) + α$, where $χ_{\ell}(G)$ is the list chromatic number of $G$. We show that the answer to this question is no by proving that there exists a constant $C$ such that $τ(K_{2,l}) - χ_{\ell}(K_{2,l}) \ge C\sqrt{l}$ for $l \ge 16$.

On 1-skeleton of the polytope of pyramidal tours with step-backs
Published in Siberian Electronic Mathematical Reports, Volume 19, Issue 2, 2022, Pages 674-687 • View PublicationBIB
Pyramidal tours with step-backs are Hamiltonian tours of a special kind: the salesperson starts in city 1, then visits some cities in ascending order, reaches city $n$, and returns to city 1 visiting the remaining cities in descending order. However, in the ascending and descending direction, the order of neighboring cities can be inverted (a step-back). It is known that on pyramidal tours with step-backs the traveling salesperson problem can be solved by dynamic programming in polynomial time. We define the polytope of pyramidal tours with step-backs $\operatorname{PSB}(n)$ as the convex hull of the characteristic vectors of all possible pyramidal tours with step-backs in a complete directed graph. The 1-skeleton of $\operatorname{PSB}(n)$ is the graph whose vertex set is the vertex set of the polytope, and the edge set is the set of geometric edges or one-dimensional faces of the polytope. We present a linear-time algorithm to verify vertex adjacencies in 1-skeleton of the polytope $\operatorname{PSB}(n)$ and estimate the diameter and the clique number of 1-skeleton: the diameter is bounded above by 4 and the clique number grows quadratically in the parameter $n$.
Eigenvalues and Critical Groups of Adinkras
Published • View PublicationBIB
Adinkras are signed graphs used to study supersymmetry in physics. We provide an introduction to these objects, and study the properties of their signed adjacency and signed Laplacian matrices. These matrices each have exactly two distinct eigenvalues (of equal multiplicity), making Adinkras closely related to the notions of strongly regular graphs. We also study the critical groups of Adinkras, and in particular determine their odd components. A novel technique of independent interest is used which considers critical groups over polynomial rings.

On Vandermonde determinants via $n$-determinants
We use earlier defined notion of $n$- determinant to investigate sub-determinants of an extended Vandermonde matrix. Firstly, we demonstrate our method on a number of particular cases. Then we prove that all these results may be stated in terms of Schur's polynomials. In our main result, we prove that Schur polynomials are equal to minors of a fixed matrix, which entries are formed of elementary symmetric polynomials. Such a formula is known as the second Jaccobi-Trudi identity.

Hyperplane Arrangements Satisfy (un)Twisted Logarithmic Comparison Theorems, Applications to $\mathscr{D}_{X}$-modules
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a reduced hyperplane arrangement we prove the analytic Twisted Logarithmic Comparison Theorem, subject to mild combinatorial arithmetic conditions on the weights defining the twist. This gives a quasi-isomorphism between the twisted logarithmic de Rham complex and the twisted meromorphic de Rham complex. The latter computes the cohomology of the arrangement's complement with coefficients from the corresponding rank one local system. We also prove the algebraic variant (when the arrangement is central), and the analytic and algebraic (untwisted) Logarithmic Comparison Theorems. The last item positively resolves an old conjecture of Terao. We also prove that: every nontrivial rank one local system on the complement can be computed via these Twisted Logarithmic Comparison Theorems; these computations are explicit finite dimensional linear algebra. Finally, we give some $\mathscr{D}_{X}$-module applications: for example, we give a sharp restriction on the codimension one components of the multivariate Bernstein--Sato ideal attached to an arbitrary factorization of an arrangement. The bound corresponds to (and, in the univariate case, gives an independent proof of) M. Saito's result that the roots of the Bernstein--Sato polynomial of a non-smooth, central, reduced arrangement live in $(-2 + 1/d, 0).$

Linear transformations of vertex operator presentations of Hall-Littlewood polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the effect of linear transformations on quantum fields with applications to vertex operator presentations of symmetric functions. Properties of linearly transformed quantum fields and corresponding transformations of Hall-Littlewood polynomials are described, including preservation of commutation relations, stability, explicit combinatorial formulas and generating functions. We prove that specializations of linearly transformed Hall-Littlewood polynomials describe all polynomial tau functions of the KP and the BKP hierarchy. Examples of linear transformations are related to multiparameter symmetric functions, Grothendieck polynomials, deformations by cyclotomic polynomials, and some other variations of Schur symmetric functions that exist in the literature.

Matching Orderable and Separable Hypergraphs
Published in Optimization Letters, 2022 • View PublicationBIB
A perfect matching in a hypergraph is a set of edges that partition the set of vertices. We study the complexity of deciding the existence of a perfect matching in orderable and separable hypergraphs. We show that the class of orderable hypergraphs is strictly contained in the class of separable hypergraphs. Accordingly, we show that for each fixed $k$, deciding perfect matching for orderable $k$-hypergraphs is polynomial time doable, but for each fixed $k\geq 3$, it is NP-complete for separable hypergraphs.
Sumsets and Veronese varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, to any subset $\mathcal{A} \subset \mathbb{Z}^{n}$ we explicitly associate a unique monomial projection $Y_{n,d_{\mathcal{A}}}$ of a Veronese variety, whose Hilbert function coincides with the cardinality of the $t$-fold sumsets $t\mathcal{A}$. This link allows us to tackle the classical problem of determining the polynomial $p_{\mathcal{A}} \in \mathbb{Q}[t]$ such that $|t\mathcal{A}| = p_{\mathcal{A}}(t)$ for all $t \geq t_0$ and the minimum integer $n_0(\mathcal{A}) \leq t_0$ for which this condition is satisfied, i.e. the so-called {\em phase transition} of $|t\mathcal{A}|$. We use the Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity and the geometry of $Y_{n,d_{\mathcal{A}}}$ to describe the polynomial $p_{\mathcal{A}}(t)$ and to derive new bounds for $n_0(\mathcal{A})$ under some technical assumptions on the convex hull of $\mathcal{A}$; and vice versa we apply the theory of sumsets to obtain geometric information of the varieties $Y_{n,d_{\mathcal{A}}}$.
