In this paper, we study the joint distribution of the cokernels of random $p$-adic matrices. Let $p$ be a prime and $P_1(t), \cdots, P_l(t) \in \mathbb{Z}_p[t]$ be monic polynomials whose reductions modulo $p$ in $\mathbb{F}_p[t]$ are distinct and irreducible. We determine the limit of the joint distribution of the cokernels $\text{cok} (P_1(A)), \cdots, \text{cok}(P_l(A))$ for a random $n \times n$ matrix $A$ over $\mathbb{Z}_p$ with respect to Haar measure as $n \rightarrow \infty$. By applying the linearization of a random matrix model, we also provide a conjecture which generalizes this result. Finally, we provide a sufficient condition that the cokernels $\text{cok}(A)$ and $\text{cok}(A+B_n)$ become independent as $n \rightarrow \infty$, where $B_n$ is a fixed $n \times n$ matrix over $\mathbb{Z}_p$ for each $n$ and $A$ is a random $n \times n$ matrix over $\mathbb{Z}_p$.
Tridiagonal real symmetric matrices with a connection to Pascal's triangle and the Fibonacci sequence
We explore a certain family $\{A_n\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ of $n \times n$ tridiagonal real symmetric matrices. After deriving a three-term recurrence relation for the characteristic polynomials of this family, we find a closed form solution. The coefficients of these characteristic polynomials turn out to involve the diagonal entries of Pascal's triangle in a tantalizingly predictive manner. Lastly, we explore a relation between the eigenvalues of various members of the family. More specifically, we give a sufficient condition on the values $m,n \in \mathbb{N}$ for when $\texttt{spec}(A_m)$ is contained in $\texttt{spec}(A_n)$. We end the paper with a number of open questions, one of which intertwines our characteristic polynomials with the Fibonacci sequence in an intriguing manner involving ellipses.

Let $p$ be prime and $X$ be a Haar-random $n \times n$ matrix over $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$, the ring of $p$-adic integers. Let $P_{1}(t), \dots, P_{l}(t) \in \mathbb{Z}_{p}[t]$ be monic polynomials of degree at most $2$ whose images modulo $p$ are distinct and irreducible in $\mathbb{F}_{p}[t]$. For each $j$, let $G_{j}$ be a finite module over $\mathbb{Z}_{p}[t]/(P_{j}(t))$. We show that as $n$ goes to infinity, the probabilities that $\mathrm{cok}(P_{j}(X)) \simeq G_{j}$ are independent, and each probability can be described in terms of a Cohen-Lenstra distribution. We also show that for any fixed $n$, the probability that $\mathrm{cok}(P_{j}(X)) \simeq G_{j}$ for each $j$ is a constant multiple of the probability that that $\mathrm{cok}(P_{j}(\bar{X})) \simeq G_{j}/pG_{j}$ for each $j$, where $\bar{X}$ is an $n \times n$ uniformly random matrix over $\mathbb{F}_{p}$. These results generalize work of Friedman and Washington and prove new cases of a conjecture of Cheong and Huang.

Extending the idea from the recent paper by Carbonero, Hompe, Moore, and Spirkl, for every function $f\colon\mathbb{N}\to\mathbb{N}\cup\{\infty\}$ with $f(1)=1$ and $f(n)\geq\binom{3n+1}{3}$, we construct a hereditary class of graphs $\mathcal{G}$ such that the maximum chromatic number of a graph in $\mathcal{G}$ with clique number $n$ is equal to $f(n)$ for every $n\in\mathbb{N}$. In particular, we prove that there exist hereditary classes of graphs that are $χ$-bounded but not polynomially $χ$-bounded.

Given a sequence 1, 1, 5, 23, 135, 925, 7285, 64755, 641075, 6993545, 83339745,..., how can we guess a formula for it? This article will quickly walk you through the concept of ansatz for classes of polynomial, $C$-finite, holonomic, and the most recent addition $C^2$-finite sequences. For each of these classes, we discuss in detail various aspects of the guess and check, generating functions, closure properties, and closed-form solutions. Every theorem is presented with an accessible proof, followed by several examples intended to motivate the development of the theories. Each example is accompanied by a Maple program with the purpose of demonstrating use of the program in solving problems in this area. While this work aims to give a comprehensive review of existing ansatzes, we also systematically fill a research gap in the literature by providing theoretical and numerical results for the $C^2$-finite sequences. We hope the readers will enjoy the journey through our unifying framework for the study of ansatz.

Let $U$ be a set of polynomials of degree at most $k$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$, the finite field of $q$ elements. Assume that $U$ is an intersecting family, that is, the graphs of any two of the polynomials in $U$ share a common point. Adriaensen proved that the size of $U$ is at most $q^k$ with equality if and only if $U$ is the set of all polynomials of degree at most $k$ passing through a common point. In this manuscript, using a different, polynomial approach, we prove a stability version of this result, that is, the same conclusion holds if $|U|>q^k-q^{k-1}$. We prove a stronger result when $k=2$.
For our purposes, we also prove the following results. If the set of directions determined by the graph of $f$ is contained in an additive subgroup of $\mathbb{F}_q$, then the graph of $f$ is a line. If the set of directions determined by at least $q-\sqrt{q}/2$ affine points is contained in the set of squares/non-squares plus the common point of either the vertical or the horizontal lines, then up to an affinity the point set is contained in the graph of some polynomial of the form $αx^{p^k}$.

We study the holomorphic Euler characteristics of tautological sheaves on Hilbert schemes of points on surfaces. In particular, we establish the rationality of K-theoretic descendent series. Our approach is to control equivariant holomorphic Euler characteristics over the Hilbert scheme of points on the affine plane. To do so, we slightly modify a Macdonald polynomial identity of Mellit.

In 2015, Dankelmann and Bau proved that for every bridgeless graph $G$ of order $n$ and minimum degree $δ$ there is an orientation of diameter at most $11\frac{n}{δ+1}+9$. In 2016, Surmacs reduced this bound to $7\frac{n}{δ+1}.$ In this paper, we consider the girth of a graph $g$ and show that for any $\varepsilon>0$ there is a bound of the form $(2g+\varepsilon)\frac{n}{h(δ,g)}+O(1)$, where $h(δ,g)$ is a polynomial. Letting $g=3$ and $\varepsilon<1$ gives an inprovement on the result by Surmacs.
It is undecidable whether the growth rate of a given bilinear system is 1

We show that there exists no algorithm that decides for any bilinear system $(B,v)$ if the growth rate of $(B,v)$ is $1$. This answers a question of Bui who showed that if the coefficients are positive the growth rate is computable (i.e., there is an algorithm that outputs the sequence of digits of the growth rate of $(B,v)$). Our proof is based on a reduction of the computation of the joint spectral radius of a set of matrices to the computation of the growth rate of a bilinear system. We also use our reduction to deduce that there exists no algorithm that approximates the growth rate of a bilinear system with relative accuracy $\varepsilon$ in time polynomial in the size of the system and of $\varepsilon$. Our two results hold even if all the coefficients are nonnegative rationals.

We obtain a three-parameter $q$-series identity that generalizes two results of Chan and Mao. By specializing our identity, we derive new results of combinatorial significance in connection with $N(r, s, m, n)$, a function counting certain overpartition pairs recently introduced by Bringmann, Lovejoy and Osburn. For example, one of our identities gives a closed-form evaluation of a double series in terms of Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind, thereby resulting in an analogue of Euler's pentagonal number theorem. Another of our results expresses a multi-sum involving $N(r, s, m, n)$ in terms of just the partition function $p(n)$. Using a result of Shimura we also relate a certain double series with a weight 7/2 theta series.
Vertex decomposability and weakly polymatroidal ideals
Let $K$ be a field and $R=K[x_1,\ldots, x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $K$. Let $Δ$ be a simplicial complex on $n$ vertices and $I=I_Δ$ be its Stanley-Reisner ideal. In this paper, we show that if $I$ is a matroidal ideal then the following conditions are equivalent: $(i)$ $Δ$ is sequentially Cohen-Macaulay; $(ii)$ $Δ$ is shellable; $(iii)$ $Δ$ is vertex decomposable. Also, if $I$ is a minimally generated by $u_1,\ldots,u_s$ such that $s\leq 3$ or ${\rm supp}(u_i)\cup {\rm supp}(u_j)=\{x_1,\ldots,x_n\}$ for all $i\neq j$, then $Δ$ is vertex decomposable. Furthermore, we prove that if $I$ is a monomial ideal of degree $2$ then $I$ is weakly polymatroidal if and only if $I$ has linear quotients if and only if $I$ is vertex splittable.

We introduce the shuffle of deformed permutahedra (a.k.a. generalized permutahedra), a simple associative operation obtained as the Cartesian product followed by the Minkowski sum with the graphical zonotope of a complete bipartite graph. Besides preserving the class of graphical zonotopes (the shuffle of two graphical zonotopes is the graphical zonotope of the join of the graphs), this operation is particularly relevant when applied to the classical permutahedra and associahedra. First, the shuffle of an $m$-permutahedron with an $n$-associahedron gives the $(m,n)$-multiplihedron, whose face structure is encoded by $m$-painted $n$-trees, generalizing the classical multiplihedron. We show in particular that the graph of the $(m,n)$-multiplihedron is the Hasse diagram of a lattice generalizing the weak order on permutations and the Tamari lattice on binary trees. Second, the shuffle of an $m$-associahedron with an $n$-associahedron gives the $(m,n)$-constrainahedron, whose face structure is encoded by $(m,n)$-cotrees, and reflects collisions of particles constrained on a grid. Third, the shuffle of an $m$-anti-associahedron with an $n$-associahedron gives the $(m,n)$-biassociahedron, whose face structure is encoded by $(m,n)$-bitrees, with relevant connections to bialgebras up to homotopy. We provide explicit vertex, facet, and Minkowski sum descriptions of these polytopes, as well as summation formulas for their $f$-polynomials based on generating functionology of decorated trees.

We introduce a new one-variable polynomial invariant of graphs, which we call the skew characteristic polynomial. For an oriented simple graph, this is just the characteristic polynomial of its anti-symmetric adjacency matrix. For nonoriented simple graphs the definition is different, but for a certain class of graphs (namely, for intersection graphs of chord diagrams), it gives the same answer if we endow such a graph with an orientation induced by the chord diagram. We prove that this invariant satisfies Vassiliev's $4$-term relations and determines therefore a finite type knot invariant. We investigate the behaviour of the polynomial with respect to the Hopf algebra structure on the space of graphs and show that it takes a constant value on any primitive element in this Hopf algebra. We also provide a two-variable extension of the skew characteristic polynomial to embedded graphs and delta-matroids. The $4$-term relations for the extended polynomial prove that it determines a finite type invariant of multicomponent links.

Chromatic symmetric functions are well-studied symmetric functions in algebraic combinatorics that generalize the chromatic polynomial and are related to Hessenberg varieties and diagonal harmonics. Motivated by the Stanley--Stembridge conjecture, we show that the allowable coloring weights for indifference graphs of Dyck paths are the lattice points of a permutahedron $\mathcal{P}_λ$, and we give a formula for the dominant weight $λ$. Furthermore, we conjecture that such chromatic symmetric functions are Lorentzian, a property introduced by Brändén and Huh as a bridge between discrete convex analysis and concavity properties in combinatorics, and we prove this conjecture for abelian Dyck paths. We extend our results on the Newton polytope to incomparability graphs of (3+1)-free posets, and we give a number of conjectures and results stemming from our work, including results on the complexity of computing the coefficients and relations with the $ζ$ map from diagonal harmonics.

We show that the counts of low degree irreducible factors of a random polynomial $f$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ with independent but non-uniform coefficients behave like that of a uniform random polynomial, exhibiting a form of universality for random polynomials over finite fields. Our strongest results require various assumptions on the parameters, but we are able to obtain results requiring only $q=p$ a prime with $p\leq \exp({n^{1/13}})$ where $n$ is the degree of the polynomial. Our proofs use Fourier analysis, and rely on tools recently applied by Breuillard and Varjú to study the $ax+b$ process, which show equidistribution for $f(α)$ at a single point. We extend this to handle multiple roots and the Hasse derivatives of $f$, which allow us to study the irreducible factors with multiplicity.
On inertia and ratio type bounds for the $k$-independence number of a graph and their relationship

For $k\ge 1$, the $k$-independence number $α_k$ of a graph is the maximum number of vertices that are mutually at distance greater than $k$. The well-known inertia and ratio bounds for the (1-)independence number $α(=α_1)$ of a graph, due to Cvetković and Hoffman, respectively, were generalized recently for every value of $k$. We show that, for graphs with enough regularity, the polynomials involved in such generalizations are closely related and give exact values for $α_k$, showing a new relationship between the inertia and ratio type bounds. Additionally, we investigate the existence and properties of the extremal case of sets of vertices that are mutually at maximum distance for walk-regular graphs. Finally, we obtain new sharp inertia and ratio type bounds for partially walk-regular graphs by using the predistance polynomials.

For the ideal $I = \langle y_1 + \dots + y_n, y^2_1, \dots , y^2_n \rangle$ in $R = {\mathbb F}[y_1, \dots , y_n]$ with char($\mathbb F$) = 0, we show that the reduced Gröbner basis with lex-order consists of polynomials $g_α$ that are represented in terms of paths, moving northeast in the Cartesian plane, that stay above the diagonal and cross the diagonal at the last step. This implies that a linear basis for the quotient ring $R/I$ is given by a set of Catalan paths. We show that the dimension is the number of standard Young tableaux of size $n$ and height at most two. The graded Frobenius characteristic of $R/I$ as a symmetric group module is given by
$\sum_{k=0}^{\lfloor \frac{n}{2} \rfloor } s_{n-k,k}q^k$.
A Generalized Grover/Zeta Correspondence
We introduce a generalized Grover matrix of a graph and present an explicit formula for its characteristic polynomial. As a corollary, we give the spectra for the generalized Grover matrix of a regular graph. Next, we define a zeta function and a generalized zeta function of a graph $G$ with respect to its generalized Grover matrix as an analog of the Ihara zeta function and present explicit formulas for their zeta functions for a vertex-transitive graph. As applications, we express the limit on the generalized zeta functions of a family of finite vertex-transitive regular graphs by an integral. Furthermore, we give the limit on the generalized zeta functions of a family of finite tori as an integral expression.

Associated with any composition beta=(a,b,...) is a corresponding fence poset F(beta) whose covering relations are
x_1 < x_2 < ... < x_{a+1} > x_{a+2} > ... > x_{a+b+1} < x_{a+b+2} < ... The distributive lattice L(beta) of all lower order ideals of F(beta) is important in the theory of cluster algebras. In addition, its rank generating function r(q;beta) is used to define q-analogues of rational numbers. Oguz and Ravichandran recently showed that its coefficients satisfy an interlacing condition, proving a conjecture of McConville, Smyth and Sagan, which in turn implies a previous conjecture of Morier-Genoud and Ovsienko that r(q;beta) is unimodal. We show that, when beta has an odd number of parts, then the polynomial is also partially symmetric: the number of ideals of F(beta) of size k equals the number of filters of size k, when k is below a certain value. Our proof is completely bijective. Oguz and Ravichandran also introduced a circular version of fences and proved, using algebraic techniques, that the distributive lattice for such a poset is rank symmetric. We give a bijective proof of this result as well. We end with some questions and conjectures raised by this work.
Proving some conjectures on Kekulé numbers for certain benzenoids by using Chebyshev polynomials

In chemistry, Cyvin-Gutman enumerates Kekulé numbers for certain benzenoids and record it as $A050446$ on OEIS. This number is exactly the two variable array $T(n,m)$ defined by the recursion $T(n, m) = T(n, m-1) + \sum^{\lfloor\frac{n-1}{2}\rfloor}_{k=0} T(2k, m-1)T(n-1-2k, m)$, where $T(n,0)=T(0,m)=1$ for all nonnegative integers $m,n$. Interestingly, this number also appeared in the context of weighted graphs, graph polytopes, magic labellings, and unit primitive matrices, studied by different authors. Several interesting conjectures were made on the OEIS. These conjectures are related to both the row and column generating function of $T(n,m)$. In this paper, give explicit formula of the column generating function, which is also the generating function $F(n,x)$ studied by Bóna, Ju, and Yoshida. We also get trig function representations by using Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind. This allows us to prove all these conjectures.
