Reduced word enumeration, complexity, and randomization
Published in Electronic J. Combinatorics 29 (2) (2022), #P2.46 • View PublicationBIB
A reduced word of a permutation $w$ is a minimal length expression of $w$ as a product of simple transpositions. We examine the computational complexity, formulas and (randomized) algorithms for their enumeration. In particular, we prove that the Edelman-Greene statistic, defined by S. Billey-B. Pawlowski, is typically exponentially large. This implies a result of B. Pawlowski, that it has exponentially growing expectation. Our result is established by a formal run-time analysis of A. Lascoux-M.-P. Schützenberger's transition algorithm. The more general problem of Hecke word enumeration, and its closely related question of counting set-valued standard Young tableaux, is also investigated. The latter enumeration problem is further motivated by work on Brill-Noether varieties due to M. Chan-N. Pflueger and D. Anderson-L. Chen-N. Tarasca.

Bumpless Pipedreams, Reduced Word Tableaux and Stanley Symmetric Functions
Lam, Lee and Shimozono introduced the structure of bumpless pipedreams in their study of back stable Schubert calculus. They found that a specific family of bumpless pipedreams, called EG-pipedreams, can be used to interpret the Edelman-Greene coefficients appearing in the expansion of a Stanley symmetric function in the basis of Schur functions. It is well known that the Edelman-Greene coefficients can also be interpreted in terms of reduced word tableaux for permutations. Lam, Lee and Shimozono proposed the problem of finding a shape preserving bijection between reduced word tableaux for a permutation $w$ and EG-pipedreams of $w$. In this paper, we construct such a bijection. The key ingredients are two new developed isomorphic tree structures associated to $w$: the modified Lascoux-Schützenberger tree of $w$ and the Edelman-Greene tree of $w$. Using the Little map, we show that the leaves in the modified Lascoux-Schützenberger of $w$ are in bijection with the reduced word tableaux for $w$. On the other hand, applying the droop operation on bumpless pipedreams also introduced by Lam, Lee and Shimozono, we show that the leaves in the Edelman-Greene tree of $w$ are in bijection with the EG-pipedreams of $w$. This allows us to establish a shape preserving one-to-one correspondence between reduced word tableaux for $w$ and EG-pipedreams of $w$.

Diagrammatics for Kazhdan-Lusztig R-polynomials
Let $(W,S)$ be an arbitrary Coxeter system. We introduce a family of polynomials, $\{ \tilde{\mathcal{R}}_{u,\underline{v}}(t)\}$, indexed by pairs $(u,\underline{v})$ formed by an element $u\in W$ and a (non-necessarily reduced) word $\underline{v}$ in the alphabet $S$. The polynomial $\tilde{\mathcal{R}}_{u,\underline{v}}(t)$ is obtained by considering a certain subset of Libedinsky's light leaves associated to the pair $(u,\underline{v})$. Given a reduced expression $\underline{v}$ of an element $v\in W$; we show that $\tilde{\mathcal{R}}_{u,\underline{v}}(t)$ coincides with the Kazhdan-- Lusztig $\tilde{R}$-polynomial $\tilde{R}_{u,v}(t)$. Using the diagrammatic approach, we obtain some closed formulas for $\tilde{R}$- polynomials.

An inversion metric for reduced words
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the graph on reduced words with edges given by the Coxeter relations for the symmetric group. We define a metric on reduced words for a given permutation, analogous to Coxeter length for permutations, for which the graph becomes ranked with unique maximal element. We show this metric extends naturally to balanced tableaux, and use it to recover enumerative results of Edelman and Greene and of Reiner and Roichman.

Stanley symmetric functions for signed involutions
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 168 (2019), 288-317 • View PublicationBIB
An involution in a Coxeter group has an associated set of involution words, a variation on reduced words. These words are saturated chains in a partial order first considered by Richardson and Springer in their study of symmetric varieties. In the symmetric group, involution words can be enumerated in terms of tableaux using appropriate analogues of the symmetric functions introduced by Stanley to accomplish the same task for reduced words. We adapt this approach to the group of signed permutations. We show that involution words for the longest element in the Coxeter group $C_n$ are in bijection with reduced words for the longest element in $A_n = S_{n+1}$, which are known to be in bijection with standard tableaux of shape $(n, n-1, \ldots, 2, 1)$.

Reduced words for clans
Clans are combinatorial objects indexing the orbits of $GL(\mathbb{C}^p) \times GL(\mathbb{C}^q)$ on the variety of flags in $\mathbb{C}^{p+q}$. This geometry leads to a partial order on the set of clans analogous to weak Bruhat order on the symmetric group, and we study the saturated chains in this order. We prove an analogue of the Matsumoto-Tits theorem on reduced words in a Coxeter group. We also obtain enumerations of reduced word sets for particular clans in terms of standard tableaux and shifted standard tableaux.

Properties of the Edelman-Greene bijection
Published • View PublicationBIB
Edelman and Greene constructed a correspondence between reduced words of the reverse permutation and standard Young tableaux. We prove that for any reduced word the shape of the region of the insertion tableau containing the smallest possible entries evolves exactly as the upper-left component of the permutation's (Rothe) diagram. Properties of the Edelman-Greene bijection restricted to 132-avoiding and 2143-avoiding permutations are presented. We also consider the Edelman-Greene bijection applied to non-reduced words.

$\mathfrak{q}$-crystal structure on primed tableaux and on signed unimodal factorizations of reduced words of type $B$
Published in Publ. RIMS Kyoto Univ. 55 (2019) 369--399 • View PublicationBIB
Crystal basis theory for the queer Lie superalgebra was developed by Grantcharov et al. and it was shown that semistandard decomposition tableaux admit the structure of crystals for the queer Lie superalgebra or simply $\mathfrak{q}$-crystal structure. In this paper, we explore the $\mathfrak{q}$-crystal structure of primed tableaux (semistandard marked shifted tableaux) and that of signed unimodal factorizations of reduced words of type $B$. We give the explicit odd Kashiwara operators on primed tableaux and the forms of the highest and lowest weight vectors. We also give the explicit algorithms for odd Kashiwara operators on signed unimodal factorizations of reduced words of type $B$.

Infinite Reduced Words, Lattice Property And Braid Graph of Affine Weyl Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we establish a bijection between the infinite reduced words of an affine Weyl group and certain biclosed sets of its positive system and determine all finitely generated biclosed sets in the positive system of an affine Weyl group. Using these results, we show first that the biclosed sets in the standard positive system of rank 3 affine Weyl groups when ordered by inclusion form a complete algebraic ortholattice and secondly that the (generalized) braid graphs of those Coxeter groups are connected, which can be thought of as an infinite version of Tit's solution to the word problem.

Atoms for signed permutations
Published in European J. Combin. 94 (2021), 103288 • View PublicationBIB
There is a natural analogue of weak Bruhat order on the involutions in any Coxeter group. The saturated chains of intervals in this order correspond to reduced words for a certain set of group elements called atoms. Brion gives a general formula for the cohomology class of a $K$-orbit closure in an arbitrary flag variety, where $K$ is a symmetric subgroup of a complex algebraic group. In type A, the terms in this formula are indexed by atoms for permutations. We study the combinatorics of atoms for involutions in the group of signed permutations. In particular, we give a compact description of the atom set for any signed involution and endow it with the structure of a graded poset. Our main result, as an application, is to identify explicitly the terms in Brion's cohomology formula in types B and C. These descriptions apply to all $K$-orbits in these types and are the first of their kind outside of type A.

Perfect shuffling by lazy swaps
Published • View PublicationBIB
We characterize the minimum-length sequences of independent lazy simple transpositions whose composition is a uniformly random permutation. For every reduced word of the reverse permutation there is exactly one valid way to assign probabilities to the transpositions. It is an open problem to determine the minimum length of such a sequence when the simplicity condition is dropped.

Soliton cellular automata associated with infinite reduced words
We consider a family of cellular automata $Φ(n,k)$ associated with infinite reduced elements on the affine symmetric group $\hat S_n$, which is a tropicalization of the rational maps introduced by two of the authors. We study the soliton solutions for $Φ(n,k)$ and explore a `duality' with the $\mathfrak{sl}_n$-box-ball system.
Enumerations relating braid and commutation classes
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 74, December 2018, Pages 11-26 • View PublicationBIB
We obtain an upper and lower bound for the number of reduced words for a permutation in terms of the number of braid classes and the number of commutation classes of the permutation. We classify the permutations that achieve each of these bounds, and enumerate both cases.

A Demazure crystal construction for Schubert polynomials
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics 1(2) (2018) 225-247 • View PublicationBIB
Stanley symmetric functions are the stable limits of Schubert polynomials. In this paper, we show that, conversely, Schubert polynomials are Demazure truncations of Stanley symmetric functions. This parallels the relationship between Schur functions and Demazure characters for the general linear group. We establish this connection by imposing a Demazure crystal structure on key tableaux, recently introduced by the first author in connection with Demazure characters and Schubert polynomials, and linking this to the type A crystal structure on reduced word factorizations, recently introduced by Morse and the second author in connection with Stanley symmetric functions.

Newton Polytopes in Algebraic Combinatorics
Published in Selecta Math. (N.S.) 25 (2019), no. 5, Art. 66, 37 pp • View PublicationBIB
A polynomial has saturated Newton polytope (SNP) if every lattice point of the convex hull of its exponent vectors corresponds to a monomial. We compile instances of SNP in algebraic combinatorics (some with proofs, others conjecturally): skew Schur polynomials; symmetric polynomials associated to reduced words, Redfield--Polya theory, Witt vectors, and totally nonnegative matrices; resultants; discriminants (up to quartics); Macdonald polynomials; key polynomials; Demazure atoms; Schubert polynomials; and Grothendieck polynomials, among others. Our principal construction is the Schubitope. For any subset of [n] x [n], we describe it by linear inequalities. This generalized permutahedron conjecturally has positive Ehrhart polynomial. We conjecture it describes the Newton polytope of Schubert and key polynomials. We also define dominance order on permutations and study its poset-theoretic properties.
A bijective proof of Macdonald's reduced word formula
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a bijective proof of Macdonald's reduced word identity using pipe dreams and Little's bumping algorithm. This proof extends to a principal specialization due to Fomin and Stanley. Such a proof has been sought for over 20 years. Our bijective tools also allow us to solve a problem posed by Fomin and Kirillov from 1997 using work of Wachs, Lenart, Serrano and Stump. These results extend earlier work by the third author on a Markov process for reduced words of the longest permutation.

Combinatorics of canonical bases revisited: Type A
Published • View PublicationBIB
We initiate a new approach to the study of the combinatorics of several parametrizations of canonical bases. In this work we deal with Lie algebras of type $A$. Using geometric objects called Rhombic tilings we derive a "crossing formula" to compute the actions of the crystal operators on Lusztig data for an arbitrary reduced word of the longest Weyl group element. We provide the following three applications of this result. Using the tropical Chamber Ansatz of Berenstein-Fomin-Zelevinsky we prove an enhanced version of the Anderson-Mirković conjecture for the crystal structure on MV polytopes. We establish a duality between Kashiwara's string and Lusztig's parametrization, revealing that each of them is controlled by the crystal structure of the other. We identify the potential functions of the unipotent radical of $SL_n$ defined by Berenstein-Kazhdan and Gross-Hacking-Keel-Kontsevich, respectively, with a function arising from the crystal structure on Lusztig data.

Transition formulas for involution Schubert polynomials
Published in Sel. Math. New Ser. 24 (2018) 2991-3025 • View PublicationBIB
The orbits of the orthogonal and symplectic groups on the flag variety are in bijection, respectively, with the involutions and fixed-point-free involutions in the symmetric group $S_n$. Wyser and Yong have described polynomial representatives for the cohomology classes of the closures of these orbits, which we denote as $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}_y$ (to be called involution Schubert polynomials) and $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt FPF}_y$ (to be called fixed-point-free involution Schubert polynomials). Our main results are explicit formulas decomposing the product of $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}_y$ (respectively, $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt FPF}_y$) with any $y$-invariant linear polynomial as a linear combination of other involution Schubert polynomials. These identities serve as analogues of Lascoux and Schützenberger's transition formula for Schubert polynomials, and lead to a self-contained algebraic proof of the nontrivial equivalence of several definitions of $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}_y$ and $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt FPF}_y$ appearing in the literature. Our formulas also imply combinatorial identities about involution words, certain variations of reduced words for involutions in $S_n$. We construct operators on involution words based on the Little map to prove these identities bijectively. The proofs of our main theorems depend on some new technical results, extending work of Incitti, about covering relations in the Bruhat order of $S_n$ restricted to involutions.
Parabolic Kazhdan-Lusztig basis, Schubert classes, and equivariant oriented cohomology
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the equivariant oriented cohomology ring $h_T(G/P)$ of partial flag varieties using the moment map approach. We define the right Hecke action on this cohomology ring, and then prove that the respective Bott-Samelson classes in $h_{T}(G/P)$ can be obtained by applying this action to the fundamental class of the identity point, hence generalizing previously known results by Brion, Knutson, Peterson, Tymoczko and others. We then focus on the equivariant oriented cohomology theory corresponding to the 2-parameter Todd genus. We give a new interpretation of Deodhar's construction of the parabolic Kazhdan-Lusztig basis. Based on it, we define the parabolic Kazhdan-Lusztig (KL) Schubert classes independently of a reduced word. We make a positivity conjecture, and a conjecture about the relationship of such classes with smoothness of Schubert varieties. We then prove several special cases.

Standard Rothe Tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
Edelman and Greene constructed a bijection between the set of standard Young tableaux and the set of balanced Young tableaux of the same shape. Fomin, Greene, Reiner and Shimozono introduced the notion of balanced Rothe tableaux of a permutation $w$, and established a bijection between the set of balanced Rothe tableaux of $w$ and the set of reduced words of $w$. In this paper, we introduce the notion of standard Rothe tableaux of $w$, which are tableaux obtained by labelling the cells of the Rothe diagram of $w$ such that each row and each column is increasing. We show that the number of standard Rothe tableaux of $w$ is smaller than or equal to the number of balanced Rothe tableaux of $w$, with equality if and only if $w$ avoids the four patterns 2413, 2431, 3142 and 4132. When $w$ is a dominant permutation, i.e., 132-avoiding, the Rothe diagram of $w$ is a Young diagram, so this reduces to the result of Edelman and Greene.
