Generalized cluster complexes via quiver representations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a quiver representation theoretic interpretation of generalized cluster complexes defined by Fomin and Reading. By using $d-$cluster categories which are defined by Keller as triangulated orbit categories of (bounded) derived categories of representations of valued quivers, we define a $d-$compatibility degree $(-||-)$ on any pair of ``colored'' almost positive real Schur roots which generalizes previous definitions on the non-colored case, and call two such roots compatible provided the $d-$compatibility degree of them is zero. Associated to the root system $Φ$ corresponding to the valued quiver, by using this compatibility relation, we define a simplicial complex which has colored almost positive real Schur roots as vertices and $d-$compatible subsets as simplicies. If the valued quiver is an alternating quiver of a Dynkin diagram, then this complex is the generalized cluster complex defined by Fomin and Reading.

Shellability and higher Cohen-Macaulay connectivity of generalized cluster complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $Φ$ be a finite root system of rank $n$ and let $m$ be a nonnegative integer. The generalized cluster complex $Δ^m (Φ)$ was introduced by S. Fomin and N. Reading. It was conjectured by these authors that $Δ^m (Φ)$ is shellable and by V. Reiner that it is $(m+1)$-Cohen-Macaulay, in the sense of Baclawski. These statements are proved in this paper. Analogous statements are shown to hold for the positive part $Δ^m_+ (Φ)$ of $Δ^m (Φ)$. An explicit homotopy equivalence is given between $Δ^m_+ (Φ)$ and the poset of generalized noncrossing partitions, associated to the pair $(Φ, m)$ by D. Armstrong.

Faces of generalized cluster complexes and noncrossing partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $Φ$ be an finite root system with corresponding reflection group $W$ and let $m$ be a nonnegative integer. We consider the generalized cluster complex $Δ^m(Φ)$ defined by S. Fomin and N. Reading and the poset $NC_{(m)}(W)$ of $m$-divisible noncrossing partitions defined by D. Armstrong. We give a characterization of the faces of $Δ^m(Φ)$ in terms of $NC_{(m)}(W)$, generalizing that of T. Brady and C. Watt given in the case $m=1$. Making use of this, we give a case free proof of a conjecture of F. Chapoton and D. Armstrong, which relates a certain refined face count of $Δ^m(Φ)$ with the Möbius function of $NC_{(m)}(W)$.

On the enumeration of positive cells in generalized cluster complexes and Catalan hyperplane arrangements
Published in J. Algebr. Comb. (2006) 23, 355-375 • View PublicationBIB
Let $Φ$ be an irreducible crystallographic root system with Weyl group $W$ and coroot lattice $\check{Q}$, spanning a Euclidean space $V$. Let $m$ be a positive integer and $\aA^m_Φ$ be the arrangement of hyperplanes in $V$ of the form $(α, x) = k$ for $α\in Φ$ and $k = 0, 1,...,m$. It is known that the number $N^+ (Φ, m)$ of bounded dominant regions of $\aA^m_Φ$ is equal to the number of facets of the positive part $Δ^m_+ (Φ)$ of the generalized cluster complex associated to the pair $(Φ, m)$ by S. Fomin and N. Reading. We define a statistic on the set of bounded dominant regions of $\aA^m_Φ$ and conjecture that the corresponding refinement of $N^+ (Φ, m)$ coincides with the $h$-vector of $Δ^m_+ (Φ)$. We compute these refined numbers for the classical root systems as well as for all root systems when $m=1$ and verify the conjecture when $Φ$ has type $A$, $B$ or $C$ and when $m=1$. We give several combinatorial interpretations to these numbers in terms of chains of order ideals in the root poset of $Φ$, orbits of the action of $W$ on the quotient $\check{Q} / (mh-1) \check{Q}$ and coroot lattice points inside a certain simplex, analogous to the ones given by the first author in the case of the set of all dominant regions of $\aA^m_Φ$. We also provide a dual interpretation in terms of order filters in the root poset of $Φ$ in the special case $m=1$.

An Elliptic $BC_n$ Bailey Lemma, Multiple Rogers--Ramanujan Identities and Euler's Pentagonal Number Theorems
Published • View PublicationBIB
An elliptic $BC_n$ generalization of the classical two parameter Bailey Lemma is proved, and a basic one parameter $BC_n$ Bailey Lemma is obtained as a limiting case. Several summation and transformation formulas associated with the root system $BC_n$ are proved as applications, including a $_6φ_5$ summation formula, a generalized Watson transformation and an unspecialized Rogers--Selberg identity. The last identity is specialized to give an infinite family of multilateral Rogers--Selberg identities. Standard determinant evaluations are then used to compute $B_n$ and $D_n$ generalizations of the Rogers--Ramanujan identities in terms of determinants of theta functions. Starting with the $BC_n$ $_6φ_5$ summation formula, a similar program is followed to prove an infinite family of $D_n$ Euler's Pentagonal Number Theorems.

Crystal bases and combinatorics of infinite rank quantum groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
The tensor powers of the vector representation associated to an infinite rank quantum group decompose into irreducible components with multiplicities independant of the infinite root system considered. Although the irreducible modules obtained in this way are not of highest weight, they admit a crystal basis and a canonical basis. This permits in particular to obtain for each familly of classical Lie algebras a Robinson-Schensted correspondence on biwords defined on infinite alphabets. We then depict a structure of bi-crystal on these bi-words. This RS-correspondence yields also a plactic algebra and plactic Schur functions distinct for each infinite root system. Surprisingly, the algebras spanned by these plactic Schur functions are all isomorphic to the algebra of symmetric functions.

The Horn recursion for Schur P- and Q- functions: Extended Abstract
A consequence of work of Klyachko and of Knutson-Tao is the Horn recursion to determine when a Littlewood-Richardson coefficient is non-zero. Briefly, a Littlewood-Richardson coefficient is non-zero if and only if it satisfies a collection of Horn inequalities which are indexed by smaller non-zero Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. There are similar Littlewood-Richardson numbers for Schur P- and Q- functions. Using a mixture of combinatorics of root systems, combinatorial linear algebra in Lie algebras, and the geometry of certain cominuscule flag varieties, we give Horn recursions to determine when these other Littlewood-Richardson numbers are non-zero. Our inequalities come from the usual Littlewood-Richardson numbers, and while we give two very different Horn recursions, they have the same sets of solutions. Another combinatorial by-product of this work is a new Horn-type recursion for the usual Littlewood-Richardson coefficients.

Combinatorial interpretations for rank-two cluster algebras of affine type
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 14, no. 1, Research Paper 15 (2007) • View PublicationBIB
Fomin and Zelevinsky show that a certain two-parameter family of rational recurrence relations, here called the (b,c) family, possesses the Laurentness property: for all b,c, each term of the (b,c) sequence can be expressed as a Laurent polynomial in the two initial terms. In the case where the positive integers b,c satisfy bc<4, the recurrence is related to the root systems of finite-dimensional rank 2 Lie algebras; when bc>4, the recurrence is related to Kac-Moody rank 2 Lie algebras of hyperbolic type. Here we investigate the borderline cases bc=4, corresponding to Kac-Moody Lie algebras of affine type. In these cases, we show that the Laurent polynomials arising from the recurence can be viewed as generating functions that enumerate the perfect matchings of certain graphs. By providing combinatorial interpretations of the individual coefficients of these Laurent polynomials, we establish their positivity.
h-vectors of generalized associahedra and non-crossing partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
A case-free proof is given that the entries of the $h$-vector of the cluster complex $Δ(Φ)$, associated by S. Fomin and A. Zelevinsky to a finite root system $Φ$, count elements of the lattice $\nc$ of noncrossing partitions of corresponding type by rank. Similar interpretations for the $h$-vector of the positive part of $Δ(Φ)$ are provided. The proof utilizes the appearance of the complex $Δ(Φ)$ in the context of the lattice $\nc$, in recent work of two of the authors, as well as an explicit shelling of $Δ(Φ)$.

The $M$-triangle of generalised non-crossing partitions for the types $E_7$ and $E_8$
Published in Séminaire Lotharingien Combin. 54 (2006), Article B54l, 34 pages • Search Publication
The $M$-triangle of a ranked locally finite poset $P$ is the generating function $\sum_{u,w\in P} ^{}μ(u,w) x^{\rk u}y^{\rk w}$, where $μ(.,.)$ is the Möbius function of $P$. We compute the $M$-triangle of Armstrong's poset of $m$-divisible non-crossing partitions for the root systems of type $E_7$ and $E_8$. For the other types except $D_n$ this had been accomplished in the earlier paper "The $F$-triangle of the generalised cluster complex." Altogether, this almost settles Armstrong's $F=M$ Conjecture predicting a surprising relation between the $M$-triangle of the $m$-divisible partitions poset and the $F$-triangle (a certain refined face count) of the generalised cluster complex of Fomin and Reading, the only gap remaining in type $D_n$. Moreover, we prove a reciprocity result for this $M$-triangle, again with the possible exception of type $D_n$. Our results are based on the calculation of certain decomposition numbers for the reflection groups of types $E_7$ and $E_8$, which carry in fact finer information than does the $M$-triangle. The decomposition numbers for the other exceptional reflection groups had been computed in the earlier paper. We present a conjectured formula for the type $A_n$ decomposition numbers.

Dominant regions in noncrystallographic hyperplane arrangements
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a crystallographic root system, dominant regions in the Catalan hyperplane arrangement are in bijection with antichains in a partial order on the positive roots. For a noncrystallographic root system, the analogous arrangement and regions have importance in the representation theory of an associated graded Hecke algebra. Since there is also an analogous root order, it is natural to hope that a similar bijection can be used to understand these regions. We show that such a bijection does hold for type $H_3$ and for type $I_2(m)$, including arbitrary ratio of root lengths when $m$ is even, but does not hold for type $H_4$. We give a criterion that explains this failure and a list of the 16 antichains in the $H_4$ root order which correspond to empty regions.

Around matrix-tree theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
Generalizing the classical matrix-tree theorem we provide a formula counting subgraphs of a given graph with a fixed 2-core. We use this generalization to obtain an analog of the matrix-tree theorem for the root system $D_n$ (the classical theorem corresponds to the $A_n$-case). Several byproducts of the developed technique, such as a new formula for a specialization of the multivariate Tutte polynomial, are of independent interest.

BGP-reflection functors and cluster combinatorics
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define Bernstein-Gelfand-Ponomarev reflection functors in the cluster categories of hereditary algebras. They are triangle equivalences which provide a natural quiver realization of the "truncated simple reflections" on the set of almost positive roots $Φ_{\ge -1}$ associated to a finite dimensional semisimple Lie algebra. Combining with the tilting theory in cluster categories developed in [4], we give a unified interpretation via quiver representations for the generalized associahedra associated to the root systems of all Dynkin types (a simply-laced or non-simply-laced). This confirms the conjecture 9.1 in [4] in all Dynkin types.

On the Combinatorics of Crystal Graphs, I. Lusztig's Involution
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we continue the development of a new combinatorial model for the irreducible characters of a complex semisimple Lie group. This model, which will be referred to as the alcove path model, can be viewed as a discrete counterpart to the Littelmann path model. It leads to an extensive generalization of the combinatorics of irreducible characters from Lie type A (where the combinatorics is based on Young tableaux, for instance) to arbitrary type. The main results of this paper are: (1) a combinatorial description of the crystal graphs corresponding to the irreducible representations (this result includes a transparent proof, based on the Yang-Baxter equation, of the fact that the mentioned description does not depend on the choice involved in our model); (2) a combinatorial realization of Lusztig's involution on the canonical basis (this involution exhibits the crystals as self-dual posets, corresponds to the action of the longest Weyl group element on an irreducible representation, and generalizes Schutzenberger's involution on tableaux); (3) an analog for arbitrary root systems, based on the Yang-Baxter equation, of Schutzenberger's sliding algorithm, which is also known as jeu de taquin (this algorithm has many applications to the representation theory of the Lie algebra of type A).

The $F$-triangle of the generalised cluster complex
Published in in: "Topics in Discrete Mathematics," dedicated to Jarik Nesetril on the occasion of his 60th birthday, M. Klazar, J. Kratochvil, M. Loebl, J. Matousek, R. Thomas and P. Valtr, eds., Springer-Verlag, Berlin, New York, 2006, pp. 93-126. • View PublicationBIB
The $F$-triangle is a refined face count for the generalised cluster complex of Fomin and Reading. We compute the $F$-triangle explicitly for all irreducible finite root systems. Furthermore, we use these results to partially prove the "$M=F$ Conjecture" of Armstrong which predicts a surprising relation between the $F$-triangle and the Möbius function of his $m$-divisible partition poset associated to a finite root system.

Lusztig's q-analogue of weight multiplicity and one-dimensional sums for affine root systems
Published in Adv. Math. 208 (2007) 438-466 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we complete the proof of the X=K conjecture, that for every family of nonexceptional affine algebras, the graded multiplicities of tensor products of symmetric power Kirillov-Reshetikhin modules known as one-dimensional sums, have a large rank stable limit X that has a simple expression (called the K-polynomial) as nonnegative integer combination of Kostka-Foulkes polynomials. We consider a subfamily of Lusztig's q-analogues of weight multiplicity which we call stable KL polynomials and denote by KL. We give a type-independent proof that K=KL. This proves that X=KL: the family of stable one-dimensional sums coincides with family of stable KL polynomials. Our result generalizes the theorem of Nakayashiki and Yamada which establishes the above equality in the case of one-dimensional sums of affine type A and the Lusztig q-analogue of type A, where both are Kostka-Foulkes polynomials.

Elliptic determinant evaluations and the Macdonald identities for affine root systems

We obtain several determinant evaluations, related to affine root systems, which provide elliptic extensions of Weyl denominator formulas. Some of these are new, also in the polynomial special case, while others yield new proofs of the Macdonald identities for the seven infinite families of irreducible reduced affine root systems.
