We present an explicit difference operator diagonalized by the Macdonald polynomials associated with an (arbitrary) admissible pair of irreducible reduced crystallographic root systems. By the duality symmetry, this gives rise to an explicit Pieri formula for the Macdonald polynomials in question. The simplest examples of our construction recover Macdonald's celebrated difference operators and associated Pieri formulas pertaining to the minuscule and quasi-minuscule weights. As further by-products, explicit expansions and Littlewood-Richardson type formulas are obtained for the Macdonald polynomials associated with a special class of small weights.
Labeled Ballot Paths and the Springer Numbers

The Springer numbers are defined in connection with the irreducible root systems of type $B_n$, which also arise as the generalized Euler and class numbers introduced by Shanks. Combinatorial interpretations of the Springer numbers have been found by Purtill in terms of Andre signed permutations, and by Arnol'd in terms of snakes of type $B_n$. We introduce the inversion code of a snake of type $B_n$ and establish a bijection between labeled ballot paths of length n and snakes of type $B_n$. Moreover, we obtain the bivariate generating function for the number B(n,k) of labeled ballot paths starting at (0,0) and ending at (n,k). Using our bijection, we find a statistic $α$ such that the number of snakes $π$ of type $B_n$ with $α(π)=k$ equals B(n,k). We also show that our bijection specializes to a bijection between labeled Dyck paths of length 2n and alternating permutations on [2n].

Using previous results concerning the rank two and rank three cases, all connected simply connected Cartan schemes for which the real roots form a finite irreducible root system of arbitrary rank are determined. As a consequence one obtains the list of all crystallographic arrangements, a large subclass of the class of simplicial hyperplane arrangements. Supposing that the rank is at least three, the classification yields Cartan schemes of type $A$ and $B$, an infinite family of series involving the types $C$ and $D$, and $74$ sporadic examples.

We introduce the simple notion of a "crystallographic arrangement" and prove a one-to-one correspondence between these arrangements and the connected simply connected Cartan schemes for which the real roots are a finite root system (up to equivalence on both sides). We thus obtain a more accessible definition for this very large subclass of the class of simplicial arrangements for which a complete classification is known.
Matroid automorphisms of the H_4 root system
We study the rank 4 linear matroid $M(H_4)$ associated with the 4-dimensional root system $H_4$. This root system coincides with the vertices of the 600-cell, a 4-dimensional regular solid. We determine the automorphism group of this matroid, showing half of the 14,400 automorphisms are geometric and half are not. We prove this group is transitive on the flats of the matroid, and also prove this group action is primitive. We use the incidence properties of the flats and the {\it orthoframes} of the matroid as a tool to understand these automorphisms, and interpret the flats geometrically.

Motivated by representation theory and geometry, we introduce and develop an equivariant generalization of Ehrhart theory, the study of lattice points in dilations of lattice polytopes. We prove representation-theoretic analogues of numerous classical results, and give applications to the Ehrhart theory of rational polytopes and centrally symmetric polytopes. We also recover a character formula of Procesi, Dolgachev, Lunts and Stembridge for the action of a Weyl group on the cohomology of a toric variety associated to a root system.

We extend properties of the weak order on finite Coxeter groups to Weyl groupoids admitting a finite root system. In particular, we determine the topological structure of intervals with respect to weak order, and show that the set of morphisms with fixed target object forms an ortho-complemented meet semilattice. We define the Coxeter complex of a Weyl groupoid with finite root system and show that it coincides with the triangulation of a sphere cut out by a simplicial hyperplane arrangement. As a consequence, one obtains an algebraic interpretation of many hyperplane arrangements that are not reflection arrangements.

This paper is concerned with one-dimensional sums in classical affine types. We prove a conjecture of the third author and Zabrocki by showing they all decompose in terms of one-dimensional sums related to affine type A provided the rank of the root system considered is sufficiently large. As a consequence, any one-dimensional sum associated to a classical affine root system with sufficiently large rank can be regarded as a parabolic Lusztig q-analogue.

Given the toric (or toral) arrangement defined by a root system $Φ$, we describe the poset of its layers (connected components of intersections) and we count its elements. Indeed we show how to reduce to zero-dimensional layers, and in this case we provide an explicit formula involving the maximal subdiagrams of the affine Dynkin diagram of $Φ$. Then we compute the Euler characteristic and the Poincare' polynomial of the complement of the arrangement, which is the set of regular points of the torus.
Noncrossing partitions, clusters and the Coxeter plane
When W is a finite Coxeter group of classical type (A, B, or D), noncrossing partitions associated to W and compatibility of almost positive roots in the associated root system are known to be modeled by certain planar diagrams. We show how the classical-type constructions of planar diagrams arise uniformly from projections of small W-orbits to the Coxeter plane. When the construction is applied beyond the classical cases, simple criteria are apparent for noncrossing and for compatibility for W of types H_3 and I_2(m) and less simple criteria can be found for compatibility in types E_6, F_4 and H_4. Our construction also explains why simple combinatorial models are elusive in the larger exceptional types.

We give an explicit Pieri formula for Macdonald polynomials attached to the root system C_n (with equal multiplicities). By inversion we obtain an explicit expansion for two-row Macdonald polynomials of type C.
Topological flatness of orthogonal local models in the split, even case. I

Local models are schemes, defined in terms of linear algebra, that were introduced by Rapoport and Zink to study the étale-local structure of integral models of certain PEL Shimura varieties over p-adic fields. A basic requirement for the integral models, or equivalently for the local models, is that they be flat. In the case of local models for even orthogonal groups, Genestier observed that the original definition of the local model does not yield a flat scheme. In a recent article, Pappas and Rapoport introduced a new condition to the moduli problem defining the local model, the so-called spin condition, and conjectured that the resulting "spin" local model is flat. We prove a weak form of their conjecture in the split, Iwahori case, namely that the spin local model is topologically flat. An essential combinatorial ingredient is the equivalence of mu-admissibility and mu-permissibility for two minuscule cocharacters mu in root systems of type D.

This is the first paper in a sequence devoted to giving manifestly non-negative formulas for generalized exponents of small representations in all types. The main part of this paper illustrates the overall structure of the argument on root systems of type A and discusses the relationship with the Lascoux-Schutzenberger charge formula.

We give a new, purely coding-theoretic proof of Koch's criterion on the tetrad systems of Type II codes of length 24 using the theory of harmonic weight enumerators. This approach is inspired by Venkov's approach to the classification of the root systems of Type II lattices in R^{24}, and gives a new instance of the analogy between lattices and codes.

Let g be a Lie algebra of type A,D,E with fixed Cartan subalgebra h, root system R and Weyl group W. We show that a choice of Coxeter element C gives a root basis for g. Moreover we show that this root basis gives a purely combinatorial construction of g, where root vectors correspond to vertices of a certain quiver $Gammahat$, and show that with respect to this basis the structure constants of the Lie bracket are given by paths in $Gammahat$. This construction is then related to the constructions of Ringel and Peng and Xiao.

We develop and study a Lefschetz theory in a combinatorial category associated to a root system and derive an upper bound on the exceptional characteristics for Lusztig's formula for the simple rational characters of a reductive algebraic group. Our bound is huge compared to the Coxeter number. It is, however, given by an explicit formula.

In 2003, Fomin and Zelevinsky obtained Cartan-Killing type classification of all cluster algebras of finite type, i.e. cluster algebras having only finitely many distinct cluster variables. A wider class of cluster algebras is formed by cluster algebras of finite mutation type which have finitely many exchange matrices (but are allowed to have infinitely many cluster variables). In this paper we classify all cluster algebras of finite mutation type with skew-symmetric exchange matrices. Besides cluster algebras of rank 2 and cluster algebras associated with triangulations of surfaces there are exactly 11 exceptional skew-symmetric cluster algebras of finite mutation type. More precisely, 9 of them are associated with root systems $E_6$, $E_7$, $E_8$, $\widetilde E_6$, $\widetilde E_7$, $\widetilde E_8$, $E_6^{(1,1)}$, $E_7^{(1,1)}$, $E_8^{(1,1)}$; two remaining were recently found by Derksen and Owen. We also describe a criterion which determines if a skew-symmetric cluster algebra is of finite mutation type, and discuss growth rate of cluster algebras.

This paper contains a complete description of minimal non-gatherable triangle triples in the lambda-sequences for the classical root systems, $F_4$ and $E_6$. Such sequences are associated with reduced decompositions (words) in affine and non-affine Weyl groups. The existence of the non-gatherable triples is a combinatorial obstacle for using the technique of intertwiners for an explicit description of the irreducible representations of the (double) affine Hecke algebras, complementary to their algebraic-geometric theory.

We show that lattice polytopes cut out by root systems of classical type are normal and Koszul, generalizing a well-known result of Bruns, Gubeladze, and Trung in type A. We prove similar results for Cayley sums of collections of polytopes whose Minkowski sums are cut out by root systems. The proofs are based on a combinatorial characterization of diagonally split toric varieties.
