Motivic decomposition of a generalized Severi-Brauer variety
Let A and B be two central simple algebras of a prime degree n over a field F generating the same subgroup in the Brauer group. We show that the Chow motive of a Severi-Brauer variety SB(A) is a direct summand of the motive of a generalized Severi-Brauer variety SB_d(B) if and only if [A]=d[B] or [A]=-d[B] in the Brauer group. The proof uses methods of Schubert calculus and combinatorial properties of Young tableaux, e.g., Robinson-Schensted correspondence.

We study a family of subvarieties of the flag variety defined by certain linear conditions, called Hessenberg varieties. We compare them to Schubert varieties. We prove that some Schubert varieties can be realized as Hessenberg varieties and vice versa. Our proof explicitly identifies these Schubert varieties by their permutation and computes their dimension.
We use this to answer an open question by proving that Hessenberg varieties are not always pure dimensional. We give examples that neither semisimple nor nilpotent Hessenberg varieties need be pure; the latter are connected, non-pure-dimensional Hessenberg varieties. Our methods require us to generalize the definition of Hessenberg varieties.

We formulate a nonrecursive combinatorial rule for the expansion of the stable Grothendieck polynomials of [Fomin-Kirillov '94] in the basis of stable Grothendieck polynomials for partitions. This gives a common generalization, as well as new proofs of the rule of [Fomin-Greene '98] for the expansion of the stable Schubert polynomials into Schur polynomials, and the K-theoretic Grassmannian Littlewood-Richardson rule of [Buch '02]. The proof is based on a generalization of the Robinson-Schensted and Edelman-Greene insertion algorithms. Our results are applied to prove a number of new formulas and properties for K-theoretic quiver polynomials, and the Grothendieck polynomials of [Lascoux-Schutzenberger '82]. In particular, we provide the first $K$-theoretic analogue of the factor sequence formula of [Buch-Fulton '99] for the cohomological quiver polynomials.
Schubert Classes in the Equivariant K-Theory and Equivariant Cohomology of the Grassmannian
We give positive formulas for the restriction of a Schubert Class to a T-fixed point in the equivariant K-theory and equivariant cohomology of the Grassmannian. Our formulas rely on a result of Kodiyalam-Raghavan and Kreiman-Lakshmibai, which gives an equivariant Grobner degeneration of a Schubert variety in the neighborhood of a T-fixed point of the Grassmannian.

Let $LG_n$ denote the Lagrangian Grassmannian parametrizing maximal isotropic (Lagrangian) subspaces of a fixed symplectic vector space of dimension $2n.$ For each strict partition $λ=(λ_1,...,λ_k)$ with $λ_1\leq n$ there is a Schubert variety $X(λ).$ Let $T$ denote a maximal torus of the symplectic group acting on $LG_n.$ Consider the $T$-equivariant cohomology of $LG_n$ and the $T$-equivariant fundamental class $σ(λ)$ of $X(λ).$ The main result of the present paper is an explicit formula for the restriction of the class $σ(λ)$ to any torus fixed point. The formula is written in terms of factorial analogue of the Schur $Q$-function, introduced by Ivanov. As a corollary to the restriction formula, we obtain an equivariant version of the Giambelli-type formula for $LG_n.$ As another consequence of the main result, we obtained a presentation of the ring $H_T^*(LG_n).$
On the shape of Bruhat intervals
Let (W,S) be a crystallographic Coxeter group (this includes all finite and affine Weyl groups), and J a subset of S. Let $W^J$ denote the set of minimal coset representatives modulo the parabolic subgroup $W_J$. For w in $W^J$, let $f^{w,J}_{i}$ denote the number of elements of length i below w in Bruhat order on $W^J$ (notation simplified to $f^{w}_{i}$ in the case when J=S). We show that $f^{w,J}_{i}$ is less than or equal to $f^{w,J}_{j}$ when i < j and j is less than or equal to the length of w minus i.
Furthermore, we express when an initial and final interval of the f's is symmetric around the middle in terms of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials.
It is also shown that if W is finite then the sequence of f's cannot grow too rapidly. Som result mirroring our first result are obtaind, again in the finite case.
The proofs rely for the most part on properties of the cohomology of Kac-Moody Schubert varieties.

We find presentations by generators and relations for the equivariant quantum cohomology of the Grassmannian. For these presentations, we also find determinantal formulae for the equivariant quantum Schubert classes. To prove this, we use the theory of factorial Schur functions and a characterization of the equivariant quantum cohomology ring.

We study subsets of Grassmann varieties G(l,m) over a field F, such that these subsets are unions of Schubert cycles, with respect to a fixed flag. We study the linear spans of, and in case of positive characteristic, the number of points on such unions over finite fields. Moreover we study a geometric duality of such unions, and give a combinatorial interpretation of this duality. We discuss the maximum number of points over a finite field for the Schubert unions of a given spanning dimension, and we give some applications to coding theory. We define Schubert union codes, and study the parameters and support weights of these codes and of the well-known Grassmann codes.

Using a blend of combinatorics and geometry, we give an algorithm for algebraically finding all flags in any zero-dimensional intersection of Schubert varieties with respect to three transverse flags, and more generally, any number of flags. In particular, the number of flags in a triple intersection is also a structure constant for the cohomology ring of the flag manifold. Our algorithm is based on solving a limited number of determinantal equations for each intersection (far fewer than the naive approach). These equations may be used to compute Galois and monodromy groups of intersections of Schubert varieties. We are able to limit the number of equations by using the permutation arrays of Eriksson and Linusson, and their permutation array varieties, introduced as generalizations of Schubert varieties. We show that there exists a unique permutation array corresponding to each realizable Schubert problem and give a simple recurrence to compute the corresponding rank table, giving in particular a simple criterion for a Littlewood-Richardson coefficient to be 0. We describe pathologies of Eriksson and Linusson's permutation array varieties (failure of existence, irreducibility, equidimensionality, and reducedness of equations), and define the more natural permutation array schemes. In particular, we give several counterexamples to the Realizability Conjecture based on classical projective geometry. Finally, we give examples where Galois/monodromy groups experimentally appear to be smaller than expected.

We study a family of polynomials whose values express degrees of Schubert varieties in the generalized complex flag manifold G/B. The polynomials are given by weighted sums over saturated chains in the Bruhat order. We derive several explicit formulas for these polynomials, and investigate their relations with Schubert polynomials, harmonic polynomials, Demazure characters, and generalized Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. In the second half of the paper, we concern with the case of to the classical flag manifold of Lie type A and discuss related combinatorial objects: flagged Schur polynomials, 312-avoiding permutations, generalized Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes, the inverse Schubert-Kostka matrix, parking functions, and binary trees.

We relate a classic algebro-geometric degeneration technique, dating at least to [Hodge 1941], to the notion of vertex decompositions of simplicial complexes. The good case is when the degeneration is reduced, and we call this a "geometric vertex decomposition".
Our main example in this paper is the family of vexillary matrix Schubert varieties, whose ideals are also known as (one-sided) ladder determinantal ideals. Using a diagonal term order to specify the (Gröbner) degeneration, we show that these have geometric vertex decompositions into simpler varieties of the same type. From this, together with the combinatorics of the pipe dreams of [Fomin--Kirillov 1996], we derive a new formula for the numerators of their multigraded Hilbert series, the double Grothendieck polynomials, in terms of "flagged set-valued tableaux". This unifies work of [Wachs 1985] on flagged tableaux, and [Buch 2002] on set-valued tableaux, giving geometric meaning to both.
This work focuses on diagonal term orders, giving results complementary to those of [Knutson--Miller 2004], where it was shown that the generating minors form a Gröbner basis for any antidiagonal term order and any matrix Schubert variety. We show here that under a diagonal term order, the only matrix Schubert varieties for which these minors form Gröbner bases are the vexillary ones, reaching an end toward which the ladder determinantal literature had been building.

A natural construction due to K. Ding yields Schubert varieties from Ferrers boards. The poset structure of the Schubert cells in these varieties is equal to the poset of maximal rook placements on the Ferrers board under the Bruhat order. We determine when two Ferrers boards have isomorphic rook posets. Equivalently, we give an exact categorization of when two Ding Schubert varieties have identical Schubert cell structures. This also produces a complete classification of isomorphism types of lower intervals of 312-avoiding permutations in the Bruhat order.

We prove that structure constants related to Hecke algebras at roots of unity are special cases of k-Littlewood-Richardson coefficients associated to a product of k-Schur functions. As a consequence, both the 3-point Gromov-Witten invariants appearing in the quantum cohomology of the Grassmannian, and the fusion coefficients for the WZW conformal field theories associated to \hat{su}(\ell) are shown to be k-Littlewood Richardson coefficients. From this, Mark Shimozono conjectured that the k-Schur functions form the Schubert basis for the homology of the loop Grassmannian, whereas k-Schur coproducts correspond to the integral cohomology of the loop Grassmannian. We introduce dual k-Schur functions defined on weights of k-tableaux that, given Shimozono's conjecture, form the Schubert basis for the cohomology of the loop Grassmannian. We derive several properties of these functions that extend those of skew Schur functions.

We prove a Chevalley formula for the equivariant quantum multiplication of two Schubert classes in the homogeneous variety X=G/P. As in the case when X is a Grassmannian, studied by the author in a previous paper, this formula implies an effective algorithm to compute the structure constants of the equivariant quantum cohomology algebra of X.
On Ideal Generators for Affine Schubert Varieties
We consider a certain class of Schubert varieties of the affine Grassmannian of type A. By embedding a Schubert variety into a finite-dimensional Grassmannian, we construct an explicit basis of sections of the basic line bundle by restricting certain Plücker co-ordinates.
As a consequence, we write an explicit set of generators for the degree-one part of the ideal of the finite-dimensional embedding. This in turn gives a set of generators for the degree-one part of the ideal defining the affine Grassmannian inside the infinite Grassmannian which we conjecture to be a complete set of ideal generators.
We apply our results to the orbit closures of nilpotent matrices. We describe (in a characteristic-free way) a filtration for the coordinate ring of a nilpotent orbit closure and state a conjecture on the SL(n)-module structures of the constituents of this filtration.

We show how to construct sparse polynomial systems that have non-trivial lower bounds on their numbers of real solutions. These are unmixed systems associated to certain polytopes. For the order polytope of a poset P this lower bound is the sign-imbalance of P and it holds if all maximal chains of P have length of the same parity. This theory also gives lower bounds in the real Schubert calculus through sagbi degeneration of the Grassmannian to a toric variety, and thus recovers a result of Eremenko and Gabrielov.

A (normal) variety is Gorenstein if it is Cohen-Macualay and its canonical sheaf is a line bundle. This property, which measures the ``pathology'' of the singularities of a variety, is thus stronger than Cohen-Macualayness, but is also weaker than smoothness. We determine which Schubert varieties are Gorenstein in terms of a combinatorial characterization using generalized pattern avoidance conditions. We also give an explicit description as a line bundle of the canonical sheaf of a Gorenstein Schubert variety.

We consider linear error correcting codes associated to higher dimensional projective varieties defined over a finite field. The problem of determining the basic parameters of such codes often leads to some interesting and difficult questions in combinatorics and algebraic geometry. This is illustrated by codes associated to Schubert varieties in Grassmannians, called Schubert codes, which have recently been studied. The basic parameters such as the length, dimension and minimum distance of these codes are known only in special cases. An upper bound for the minimum distance is known and it is conjectured that this bound is achieved. We give explicit formulae for the length and dimension of arbitrary Schubert codes and prove the minimum distance conjecture in the affirmative for codes associated to Schubert divisors.
