Combinatorial proofs of Petrie Pieri rule and Plethystic Pieri rule
Petrie symmetric functions $G(k,n)$, also known as truncated homogeneous symmetric functions or modular complete symmetric functions, form a class of symmetric functions interpolating between the elementary symmetric functions $e_n$ and the homogeneous symmetric functions $h_n$. Analogous to the Pieri rule for $s_μh_n$ and the dual Pieri rule for $s_μe_n$, Grinberg showed that the Schur coefficients for the ``Pieri rule'' of $s_μG(k,n)$ can be determined by the determinant $\pet_k(λ,μ)$ of Petrie matrices. Cheng, Chou, Eu, Fu, and Yao provided a ribbon tiling interpretation for the coefficient $\pet_k(λ,\varnothing)$, which was later generalized by Jin, Jing, and Liu to $\pet_k(λ,μ)$ in the case where $λ/μ$ is connected.
The goal of this paper is to offer a more transparent combinatorial perspective on the structure and behavior of Petrie symmetric functions. First, we provide a refined combinatorial formula for the determinant of a Petrie matrix in terms of certain orientations of the associated graph derived from the matrix. We then generalize the result of JJL to arbitrary skew shapes using purely combinatorial proofs. In addition, we investigate the generating function of these orientations with respect to certain statistics. As an application of our method, we present a combinatorial proof of the plethystic Pieri rule.
Almost Commutative Terwilliger Algebras I: The Group Association Scheme
Terwilliger algebras are a subalgebra of a matrix algebra constructed from an association scheme. Rie Tanaka defined what it means for a Terwilliger algebra to be almost commutative and gave five equivalent conditions. In this paper we first determine an equivalent sixth condition for a Terwilliger algebra coming from a commutative Schur ring to be almost commutative. We then provide a classification of which finite groups result in an almost commutative Terwilliger algebra when looking at the group association scheme determined by the conjugacy classes. In particular, we show that all such groups are either abelian, or Camina groups. We then compute the dimension of each Terwilliger algebra, and we also express each of the group association schemes with an almost commutative Terwilliger algebra as a wreath product of the group schemes of finite abelian groups and $1-$class association schemes. Furthermore, we give the non-primary primitive idempotents for each Terwilliger algebra for those groups.
Almost Commutative Terwilliger Algebras II: Strong Gelfand Pairs
Terwilliger algebras are a subalgebra of a matrix algebra constructed from an association scheme. In 2010, Tanaka defined what it means for a Terwilliger algebra to be almost commutative and gave five equivalent conditions for a Terwilliger algebra to be almost commutative. In this paper we look at Terwilliger algebras coming from strong Gelfand pairs $(G,H)$ for a finite group $G$. From such a pair, one can create a Terwilliger algebra using the Schur ring of $H-$classes of elements of $G$. We determine all strong Gelfand pairs that give an Almost Commutative Terwilliger algebra.
An Algorithmic Upper Bound for Permanents via a Permanental Schur Inequality
Computing the permanent of a non-negative matrix is a computationally challenging, \#P-complete problem with wide-ranging applications. We introduce a novel permanental analogue of Schur's determinant formula, leveraging a newly defined \emph{permanental inverse}. Building on this, we introduce an iterative, deterministic procedure called the \emph{permanent process}, analogous to Gaussian elimination, which yields constructive and algorithmically computable upper bounds on the permanent. Our framework provides particularly strong guarantees for matrices exhibiting approximate diagonal dominance-like properties, thereby offering new theoretical and computational tools for analyzing and bounding permanents.
Arithmetic properties of $t$-Schur overpartitions
In a recent work, Nadji and Ahmia introduced the $t$-Schur overpartitions as an overpartition analogue for $t$-Schur partitions, which generalizes the classical Schur's partitions into parts congruent to $1$ or $5$ modulo $6$. We continue the study of this new class of overpartitions and prove several arithmetic results for the cases $t=3,9$ and $t$ being a power of $2$ or a power of $3$.
Extending Recent Congruence Results on $t$-Schur overpartitions
Recently, Nadji and Ahmia~\cite{nadji2021} introduced the notion of $t$-Schur overpartitions and investigated their combinatorial and arithmetic properties. In this paper, we extend their work and establish several new congruence relations for $t$-Schur overpartitions. For example, for all $n \ge 0$ we prove \[ \overline{S_9}(24n+23)\equiv 0 \pmod{32}. \]
An elementary construction of the ring of dual $K$-$Q$-cancellation property
This paper presents an elementary introduction on $K$-theoretic $Q$-functions, which were introduced by Ikeda and Naruse in 2013. These functions, which serve as $K$-theoretic analogs of Schur $Q$-functions, are known to possess combinatorial and algebraic constructions. In a 2022 paper, the author introduced ``$β$-deformed power-sums" to provide a simpler, more algebraic construction of these functions. Since the original approach relies on fermionic operators and vacuum expectation values, this paper presents a more accessible, purely algebraic treatment, following the exposition of Schur $Q$-functions in Macdonald's standard textbook. We also show that the algebra of dual $Q$-cancellation property with integer coefficients is generated by dual $K$-$Q$-functions associated with an odd row partition.
Amplitude maximization in stable systems, Schur positivity, and some conjectures on polynomial interpolation
For $r > 0$ and integers $t \ge n > 0$, we consider the following problem: maximize the amplitude $|x_t|$ at time $t$, over all complex solutions $x = (x_0, x_1, \dots)$ of arbitrary homogeneous linear difference equations of order $n$ with the characteristic roots in the disc $\{z \in \mathbb{C}: |z| \le r\}$, and with initial values $x_0, \dots, x_{n-1}$ in the unit disc. We find that for any triple $t,n,r$, the maximum is attained with coinciding roots on the boundary circle; in particular, this implies that the peak amplitude $\sup_{t \ge n} |x_t|$ can be maximized explicitly, by studying a unique equation with the characteristic polynomial $(z-r)^n$. Moreover, the optimality of the cophase root configuration holds for origin-centered polydiscs. To prove this result, we first reduce the problem to a certain interpolation problem over monomials, then solve the latter by leveraging the theory of symmetric functions and identifying the associated Schur positivity structure. We also discuss the implications for more general Reinhardt domains. Finally, we study the problem of estimating the derivatives of a real entire function from its values at $n/2$ pairs of complex conjugate points in the unit disc. We propose conjectures on the extremality of the monomial $z^n$, and restate them in terms of Schur polynomials.
$K$-analogues of Hivert's divided difference operators
Several families of polynomials of combinatorial and representation theoretic interest (notably the Schur polynomials $s_λ$, Demazure characters $\mathfrak{D}_a$, and Demazure atoms $\mathfrak{A}_a$) can be defined in terms of divided difference operators. Hivert (2000) defines "fundamental analogues" of these divided difference operators, and Hivert and Hicks-Niese show in arXiv:2406.02420 that the polynomials that arise from those fundamental operators in analogous ways to the three families of polynomials above are respectively the fundamental quasisymmetric functions $F_a$ from (1984), the fundamental slides $\mathfrak{F}_a$ of Assaf and Searles from arXiv:1603.09744, and the fundamental particles $\mathfrak{P}_a$ of Searles from arXiv:1707.01172. Lascoux (2001) defines $K$-analogues of the divided difference operators, and in arXiv:1908.07364, Buciumas, Scrimshaw, and Weber show that the polynomials arising in corresponding ways from the $K$-theoretic divided difference operators are respectively the Grothendieck polynomials $\overline{s}_λ$, the combinatorial Lascoux polynomials $\overline{\mathfrak{D}}_a$ from arXiv:1611.08777, and the combinatorial Lascoux atoms $\overline{\mathfrak{A}}_a$ from arXiv:1611.08777, as conjectured by Monical in arXiv:1611.08777. We define $K$-analogues of Hivert's fundamental divided difference operators and show that the polynomials arising in the corresponding ways from our new operators are respectively the multifundamentals $\overline{F}_a$ of Lam and Pylyavskyy from arXiv:0705.2189, the fundamental glides $\overline{\mathfrak{F}}_a$ from of Pechenik and Searles from arXiv:1611.02545, and the kaons $\overline{\mathfrak{P}}_a$ of Monical, Pechenik, and Searles from arXiv:1806.03802.
Quivers and BPS states in 3d and 4d
We propose a symmetrization relation between BPS quivers encoding 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories and symmetric quivers associated to 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories. We analyse in detail the symmetrization of BPS quivers for a series of $A_m$ Argyres-Douglas theories by engineering 3d-4d systems in geometric backgrounds involving appropriate 3-manifolds and Riemann surfaces. We discuss properties of these geometric backgrounds and derive the corresponding quiver partition functions from the perspective of skein modules, which forms the foundation of the symmetrization map for the minimal chamber. We also prove that the structure of wall-crossing in 4d $A_m$ Argyres-Douglas theories is isomorphic to the structure of unlinking of symmetric quivers encoding their partner 3d theories, which allows for a proper definition of the symmetrization map outside the minimal chamber. Finally, we show that the Schur indices of 4d theories are captured by symmetric quivers that include symmetrization of 4d BPS quivers.
A refined twist on Hurwitz numbers
We introduce a two-parameter refinement of the Jucys-Murphy theory, that we call the CJT-refinement, unifying Schur, zonal, and, conjecturally, Jack actions of the ring of symmetric functions on the Fock space. Applications of this formalism include a partial resolution of a recent conjecture of Coulter-Do, as well as cut-and-join recursion for $b$-Hurwitz numbers. The cut-and-join equations enable the derivation of the tropicalization of $b$--Hurwitz numbers. We also provide a first application of this tropical interpretation by answering an open problem of Chapuy-Dołęga on the polynomial structure of $b$-Hurwitz numbers.
Monotonicity for generalized binomial coefficients and Jack positivity

Binomial formulas for Schur polynomials and Jack polynomials were studied by Lascoux in 1978, and Kaneko, Okounkov--Olshanski and Lassalle in the 1990s. We prove that the associated binomial coefficients are monotone and derive some symmetric function inequalities, in particular, a Schur positivity and Jack positivity result. These inequalities are similar to those studied by Newton, Muirhead, Gantmacher, Cuttler--Greene--Skandera, Sra and Khare--Tao.
Quadratic relations for ninth variations of Schur functions and application to Schur multiple zeta functions
Macdonald's ninth variation of Schur functions is a broad generalization of the classical Schur function and its variants, defined via the Jacobi-Trudi determinant formula. In this paper, we establish various algebraic relations for $S^{(r)}_{λ/μ}(X)$, a class of the ninth variation introduced by Nakagawa, Noumi, Shirakawa, and Yamada, by combining the Jacobi-Trudi formula with determinant formulas such as the Desnanot-Jacobi adjoint matrix theorem and the Plücker relations, which generalize the corresponding relations for Schur functions. As an application, we investigate algebraic relations for "diagonally constant" Schur multiple zeta functions and examine their specific special values when the shape is rectangular.
A plethystic chain rule
We consider a derivation $\mathsf{D}$ on the ring $Λ$ of symmetric functions and investigate its combinatorial, algebraic and geometric properties. More precisely, we show that $\mathsf{D}$ restricts to a quasi-isometry, with respect to the Hall product, on the graded component of $Λ$ of each positive degree and provide a chain-rule formula with respect to the plethysm operation. Furthermore, we relate the geometry of the Schur functions supporting $\mathsf{D}(f)$, where $f\in Λ$ is an homogeneous symmetric function, to that of $f$.
Weighted $K$-$k$-Schur functions and their application to the $K$-$k$-Schur alternating conjecture
We introduce the new concept of weighted $K$-$k$-Schur functions -- a novel family within the broader class of Katalan functions -- that unifies and extends both $K$-$k$-Schur functions and closed $k$-Schur Katalan functions. This new notion exhibits a fundamental alternating property under certain conditions on the indexed $k$-bounded partitions. As a central application, we resolve the $K$-$k$-Schur alternating conjecture -- posed by Blasiak, Morse, and Seelinger in 2022 -- for a wide class of $k$-bounded partitions, including all strictly decreasing $k$-bounded partitions. Our results shed new light on the combinatorial structure of $K$-theoretic symmetric functions.
Supersymmetric Schur polynomials have saturated Newton polytopes
We prove that every supersymmetric Schur polynomial has a saturated Newton polytope (SNP). Our approach begins with a tableau-theoretic description of the support, which we encode as a polyhedron with a totally unimodular constraint matrix. The integrality of this polyhedron follows from the Hoffman-Kruskal criterion, thereby establishing the SNP property.
Last passage percolation in lower triangular domain
Last passage percolation (LPP) in an $n\times n$ lower triangular domain has nice connections with various generalizations of Schur measures. LPP along an anti-diagonal, from $(1,n)$ to $(n,1)$, gives a distribution of a highest column of a random composition with respect to a Demazure measure (a non-symmetric analog of a Schur measure). LPP along a main diagonal, from $(1,1)$ to $(n,n)$, is distributed as a marginal of a Pfaffian Schur process. In the first case we show that the asymptotics for the constant specialization is governed by the GOE Tracy-Widom distribution, in the second case - by the GSE Tracy-Widom distribution. In the latter case we were also able to study the truncated lower triangular case, obtaining an interesting generalization of the GSE Tracy-Widom distribution.
Kronecker Coefficients, Crystals, and Bitableaux
What might a combinatorial interpretation of the Kronecker coefficients even look like? We introduce a class of combinatorial objects called bitableaux, which we believe are a natural candidate, and we formulate a purely combinatorial problem which if resolved would give a combinatorial interpretation of the Kronecker coefficients. We make some partial progress on this problem -- enough to extract a combinatorial expansion for a Kronecker product of Schur functions in the monomial basis. We also explain how in this framework finding a combinatorial interpretation for Kronecker coefficients can be thought of as looking for a generalization of the RSK and dual RSK insertion algorithms.

We discuss algebraic universality in the sense of P. Vogel for the simplest refined quantity, the Macdonald dimensions. The main known source of universal quantities is given by Chern-Simons theory. Refinement of Chern-Simons theory means introducing additional parameters. At the level of symmetric functions, the refinement is the transition from the Schur functions to the Macdonald polynomials. We consider the Macdonald polynomials associated with the simple Lie algebras, define Macdonald dimensions and dual Macdonald dimensions, and present a universal formula for them that unifies these quantities for algebras associated with simply laced root systems. We also consider mixed Macdonald dimensions that depend on two different root systems.
Domino Tilings of the Aztec Diamond in Random Environment and Schur Generating Functions
We study the asymptotic behavior of random domino tilings of the Aztec diamond of size $M$ in a random environment, where the environment is a one-periodic sequence of i.i.d. random weights attached to domino positions (i.e., to the edges of the underlying portion of the square grid). We consider two cases: either the variance of the weights decreases at a critical scale $1/M$, or the distribution of the weights is fixed. In the former case, the unrescaled fluctuations of the domino height function are governed by the sum of a Gaussian Free Field and an independent Brownian motion. In the latter case, we establish fluctuations on the much larger scale $\sqrt M$, given by the Brownian motion alone.
To access asymptotic fluctuations in random environment, we employ the method of Schur generating functions. Moreover, we substantially extend the known Law of Large Numbers and Central Limit Theorems for particle systems via Schur generating functions in order to apply them to our setting. These results might be of independent interest.
