Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for the cyclotomic Hecke algebra and applications
We derive a Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for irreducible characters of the cyclotomic Hecke algebra on certain standard elements, which fully determine their values. This work builds upon our recent multi-parameter Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for Macdonald polynomials. Our Murnaghan-Nakayama rule can be readily specialized to retrieve various existing rules, including those for the complex reflection group of type $G(m, 1, n)$ and the Iwahori-Hecke algebra in types $A$ and $B$. In a dual picture, we establish an iterative formula for the irreducible characters on upper multipartitions, utilizing the vertex operator realization of Schur functions. As applications we derive an Regev-type formula and an Lübeck-Prasad-Adin-Roichman-type formula for the cyclotomic Hecke algebra, thereby extending the corresponding formulas for the Iwahori-Hecke algebra in type $A$ and the complex reflection group of type $G(m,1,n)$ to the setting of the cyclotomic Hecke algebra, respectively. Finally, we introduce the notion of the multiple bitrace of the cyclotomic Hecke algebra to formulate the second orthogonal relation of the irreducible characters. We also provide a general combinatorial rule to compute the multiple bitrace.
Equivariant quasisymmetry and noncrossing partitions
We introduce a definition of ``equivariant quasisymmetry'' for polynomials in two sets of variables. Using this definition we define quasisymmetric generalizations of the theory of double Schur and double Schubert polynomials that we call double fundamental polynomials and double forest polynomials, where the subset of ``noncrossing partitions'' plays the role of $S_n$. In subsequent work we will show this combinatorics is governed by a new geometric construction we call the ``quasisymmetric flag variety'' which plays the same role for equivariant quasisymmetry as the usual flag variety plays in the classical story.

Total positivity of Hadamard product of dual Jacobi--Trudi matrices
In 1992, Wagner proved that the Hadamard product of two totally positive lower triangular Toeplitz matrices is totally positive. In this work, we strengthen this result by establishing total monomial positivity for the Hadamard product of Jacobi--Trudi matrices. In particular, we resolve a conjecture of Sokal concerning the Hadamard square of Jacobi--Trudi matrices. Moreover, we provide a manifestly positive Schur expansion for the Hadamard square of Jacobi--Trudi matrices indexed by ribbons. In addition, we construct a corresponding representation, offering a representation-theoretic proof of the Schur positivity.
Refinement of Hikita's $e$-positivity theorem via Abreu--Nigro's $g$-functions and restricted modular law
We study the symmetric functions \( g_{\mm,k}(x;q) \), introduced by Abreu and Nigro for a Hessenberg function \( \mm \) and a positive integer \( k \), which refine the chromatic symmetric function. Building on Hikita's recent breakthrough on the Stanley--Stembridge conjecture, we prove the \( e \)-positivity of \( g_{\mm,k}(x;1) \), refining Hikita's result. We also provide a Schur expansion of the sum \( \sum_{k=1}^n e_k(x) g_{\mm,n-k}(x;q) \) in terms of \( P \)-tableaux with 1 in the upper-left corner. We introduce a restricted version of the modular law as our main tool. Then, we show that any function satisfying the restricted modular law is determined by its values on disjoint unions of path graphs.

Expanding the unicellular LLT polynomials of two-headed melting lollipops into ribbon Schurs
We prove a simple formula expanding the unicellular LLT polynomials of a class of graphs we call two-headed melting lollipops into ribbon Schur functions. Our work extends the Schur expansion originally found for melting lollipop graphs by Huh, Nam, and Yoo.

Log-concavity of characters of parabolic Verma modules, and of restricted Kostant partition functions
In 2022, Huh-Matherne-Mészáros-St. Dizier showed that normalized Schur polynomials are Lorentzian, thereby yielding their continuous (resp. discrete) log-concavity on the positive orthant (resp. on their support, in type $A$ root directions). A reinterpretation of this result is that the characters of finite-dimensional simple representations of $\mathfrak{sl}_{n+1}(\mathbb{C})$ are denormalized Lorentzian (DL). In the same paper, these authors also showed that shifted characters of Verma modules over $\mathfrak{sl}_{n+1}(\mathbb{C})$ are DL. In this work we extend these results to a larger family of modules that subsumes both of the above: we show that shifted characters of all parabolic Verma modules over $\mathfrak{sl}_{n+1}(\mathbb{C})$ are denormalized Lorentzian. The proof involves certain graphs on $[n+1]$; more strongly, we explain why the character (i.e., generating function) of the Kostant partition function of any loopless multigraph on $[n+1]$ is Lorentzian after shifting and normalizing. We then show that parabolic Vermas form a "maximal" class with log-concave (hence DL) characters. Namely, log-concavity fails in greater generality along three natural directions: (1) it does not hold for every simple Lie type, (2) nor for a larger universal family of highest weight modules, the higher order Verma modules, even in type $A$, and (3) it does not always hold for important generalizations of Schur polynomials: the Jack and Macdonald polynomials. Finally, we extend these results to parabolic (i.e. "first order") and higher order Verma modules over the semisimple Lie algebras $\oplus_{t=1}^T \mathfrak{sl}_{n_t+1}(\mathbb{C})$. We also partially resolve a conjecture of Huh et al on the DL property for integral highest weight simple modules.

The number of irreducibles in the plethysm $s_λ[s_m]$
We give a formula for the number of irreducibles (with multiplicity) in the decomposition of the plethysm $s_λ[s_m]$ of Schur functions in terms of the number of lattice points in certain rational polytopes. In the case where $λ= n$ consists of a single part, we will give a combinatorial interpretation of this number as the cardinality of a set of matrices modulo permutation equivalence. This is also the setting of Foulkes' conjecture, and our results allow us to state a weaker version that only involves comparing the cardinalities of such sets, rather than the multiplicities of irreducible representations.

Twisted moments of characteristic polynomials of random matrices in the unitary group
Recently, Keating and the second author of this paper devised a heuristic for predicting asymptotic formulas for moments of the Riemann zeta-function $ζ(s)$. Their approach indicates how lower twisted moments of $ζ(s)$ may be used to evaluate higher moments. In this paper, we present a rigorous random matrix theory analogue of their heuristic. To do this, we develop a notion of "twisted moment" of characteristic polynomials of matrices in the unitary group $U(N)$, and we prove several identities involving Schur polynomials. Our results may be viewed as a proof of concept of the heuristic for $ζ(s)$.

Block diagonally symmetric lozenge tilings
We introduce a new symmetry class of both boxed plane partitions and lozenge tilings of a hexagon, called the $\mathbf{r}$-block diagonal symmetry class, where $\mathbf{r}$ is an $n$-tuple of non-negative integers. We prove that the tiling generating function of this symmetry class under a certain weight assignment is given by a simple product formula. As a consequence, the volume generating function of $\mathbf{r}$-block symmetric plane partitions is obtained. Additionally, we consider $(\mathbf{r},\mathbf{r^{\prime}})$-block diagonally symmetric lozenge tilings by embedding the hexagon into a cylinder and present an identity for the signed enumeration of this symmetry class in specific cases. Two methods are provided to study this symmetry class: (1) the method of non-intersecting lattice paths with a modification, and (2) interpreting weighted lozenge tilings algebraically as (skew) Schur polynomials and applying the dual Pieri rule.
Type C $K$-Stanley symmetric functions and Kraśkiewicz-Hecke insertion
We study Type C $K$-Stanley symmetric functions, which are $K$-theoretic extensions of the Type C Stanley symmetric functions. They are indexed by signed permutations and can be used to enumerate reduced words via their expansion into Schur $Q$-functions, which are indexed by strict partitions. A combinatorial description of the Schur $Q$- coefficients is given by Kraśkiewicz insertion. Similarly, their $K$-Stanley analogues are conjectured to expand positively into $GQ$'s, which are $K$-theory representatives for the Lagrangian Grassmannian introduced by Ikeda and Naruse also indexed by strict partitions. We introduce a $K$-theoretic analogue of Kraśkiewicz insertion, which can be used to enumerate 0-Hecke expressions for signed permutations and gives a conjectural combinatorial rule for computing this $GQ$ expansion. We show the Type C $K$-Stanleys for certain fully commutative signed permutations are skew $GQ$'s. Combined with a Pfaffian formula of Anderson's, this allows us to prove Lewis and Marberg's conjecture that $GQ$'s of (skew) rectangle shape are $GQ$'s of trapezoid shape. Combined with our previous conjecture, this also gives an explicit combinatorial description of the skew $GQ$ expansion into $GQ$'s. As a consequence, we obtain a conjecture for the product of two $GQ$ functions where one has trapezoid shape.
Constructed tableaux and a new shifted Littlewood-Richardson rule
We give a new Littlewood-Richardson rule for the Schubert structure coefficients of isotropic Grassmannians, equivalently for the multiplication of $P$-Schur functions. Serrano (2010) previously gave a formula in terms of classes in his shifted plactic monoid. However, this formula is challenging to use because of the difficulty of characterizing shifted plactic classes. We give the first algebraic proof of this formula. We then use it to obtain a new rule that is easy to implement. Our rule is based on identifying a subtle analogue of Yamanouchi tableaux, which we characterize. We show that for some families of structure coefficients, our rule leads to an algorithm with exponentially better time complexity than the original rule of Stembridge (1989).
Crystal skeletons: Combinatorics and axioms
Crystal skeletons were introduced by Maas-Gariépy in 2023 by contracting quasi-crystal components in a crystal graph. On the representation theoretic level, crystal skeletons model the expansion of Schur functions into Gessel's quasisymmetric functions. Motivated by questions of Schur positivity, we provide a combinatorial description of crystal skeletons, and prove many new properties, including a conjecture by Maas-Gariépy that crystal skeletons generalize dual equivalence graphs. We then present a new axiomatic approach to crystal skeletons. We give three versions of the axioms based on $GL_n$-branching, $S_n$-branching, and local axioms in analogy to the local Stembridge axioms for crystals based on novel commutation relations.

Schur Rank, Compatibility Degree, and Canonical Decomposition
The notion of denominator vectors can be extended to all generic basis elements of upper cluster algebras in a natural way. Under a weakened version of generic pairing assumption, we provide a representation-theoretic interpretation for this extended notion. We derive several consequences in this generality. We present a counterexample to the conjecture that distinct cluster monomials have distinct denominator vectors. Utilizing a new rank function called the Schur rank, we extend the notion of compatibility degree. As an application, we find a tropical method to compute the multiplicity of a real component in the canonical decomposition of $δ$-vectors.

Vertex models for the product of a permuted-basement Demazure atom and a Schur polynomial
We present the first positive combinatorial rule for expanding the product of a permuted-basement Demazure atom and a Schur polynomial. Special cases of permuted-basement Demazure atoms include Demazure atoms and characters. These cases have known tableau formulas for their expansions when multiplied by a Schur polynomial, due to Haglund, Luoto, Mason and van Willigenburg. We find a vertex model formula, giving a new rule even in these special cases, extending a technique introduced by Zinn-Justin for calculating Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. We derive a coloured vertex model for permuted-basement Demazure atoms, inspired by Borodin and Wheeler's model for non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials. We make this model compatible with an uncoloured vertex model for Schur polynomials, putting them in a single framework. Unlike previous work on structure coefficients via vertex models, a remarkable feature of our construction is that it relies on a Yang-Baxter equation that only holds for certain boundary conditions. However, this restricted Yang-Baxter equation is sufficient to show our result.

Deterministically approximating the volume of a Kostka polytope
Polynomial-time deterministic approximation of volumes of polytopes, up to an approximation factor that grows at most sub-exponentially with the dimension, remains an open problem. Recent work on this question has focused on identifying interesting classes of polytopes for which such approximation algorithms can be obtained. In this paper, we focus on one such class of polytopes: the Kostka polytopes. The volumes of Kostka polytopes appear naturally in questions of random matrix theory, in the context of evaluating the probability density that a random Hermitian matrix with fixed spectrum $λ$ has a given diagonal $μ$ (the so-called randomized Schur-Horn problem): the corresponding Kostka polytope is denoted $\mathrm{GT}(λ, μ)$. We give a polynomial-time deterministic algorithm for approximating the volume of a ($Ω(n^2)$ dimensional) Kostka polytope $\mathrm{GT}(λ, μ)$ to within a multiplicative factor of $\exp(O(n\log n))$, when $λ$ is an integral partition with $n$ parts, with entries bounded above by a polynomial in $n$, and $μ$ is an integer vector lying in the interior of the permutohedron (i.e., convex hull of all permutations) of $λ$. The algorithm thus gives asymptotically correct estimates of the log-volume of Kostka polytopes corresponding to such $(λ, μ)$. Our approach is based on a partition function interpretation of a continuous analogue of Schur polynomials.

Monomial stability of Frobenius images
We study representation stability in the sense of Church, Ellenberg, and Farb \cite{FI-module} through the lens of symmetric function theory and the different symmetric function bases. We show that a sequence, $(F_n)_n$, where $F_n$ is a homogeneous symmetric function of degree $n$, has stabilizing Schur coefficients if and only if it has stabilizing monomial coefficients. More generally, we develop a framework for checking when stabilizing coefficients transfer from one symmetric function basis to another. We also see how one may compute representation stable ranges from the monomial expansions of the $F_n$.\parspace As applications, we reprove and refine the representation stability of diagonal coinvariant algebras, $DR_n$. We also observe new representation stability phenomena of the Garsia-Haiman modules. This establishes certain stability properties of the modified Macdonald polynomials, $\tilde{H}_{μ^{(n)}}[X;q,t]$ and the modified $q,t$-Kostka numbers, $\tilde{K}_{μ^{(n)},ν[n]}(q,t)$, for arbitrary sequences of partitions with $μ^{(n)}\vdash n$ and $μ^{(n)}\subseteq μ^{(n+1)}$.
Gallai-Schur Triples and Related Problems
Schur's Theorem states that, for any $r \in \mathbb{Z}^+$, there exists a minimum integer $S(r)$ such that every $r$-coloring of $\{1,2,\dots,S(r)\}$ admits a monochromatic solution to $x+y=z$. Recently, Budden determined the related Gallai-Schur numbers; that is, he determined the minimum integer $GS(r)$ such that every $r$-coloring of $\{1,2,\dots,GS(r)\}$ admits either a rainbow or monochromatic solution to $x+y=z$. In this article we consider problems that have been solved in the monochromatic setting under a monochromatic-rainbow paradigm. In particular, we investigate Gallai-Schur numbers when $x \neq y$, we consider $x+y+b=z$ and $x+y<z$, and we investigate the asymptotic minimum number of rainbow and monochromatic solutions to $x+y=z$ and $x+y<z$.

Chevalley operations on TNN Grassmannians
Lusztig showed that invertible totally nonnegative (TNN) matrices form a semigroup generated by positive diagonal matrices and Chevalley generators. From its Grassmann analogue, we introduce Chevalley operations on index sets, which we show have a rich variety of applications. We first completely classify all inequalities that are quadratic in Plucker coordinates over the TNN part of the Grassmannian: \[\sum_{I,J}c_{I,J}Δ_IΔ_J\ge 0\quad over\quad \mathrm{Gr}^{\ge 0}(m,m+n)\] where each $c_{I,J}$ is real, and $Δ_I,Δ_J$ are Plucker coordinates with a homogeneity condition. Using an idea of Gekhtman-Shapiro-Vainshtein, we also explain how our Chevalley operations can be motivated from cluster mutations, and lead to working in Grassmannians of smaller dimension, akin to cluster algebras. We then present several applications of Chevalley operations. First, we obtain certificates for the above inequalities via sums of coefficients $c_{I,J}$ over 321-avoiding permutations and involutions; we believe this refined results of Rhoades-Skandera for TNN-matrix inequalities via their Temperley-Lieb immanant idea. Second, we provide a novel proof via Chevalley operations of Lam's log-supermodularity of Plucker coordinates. This has several consequences: (a) Each positroid, corresponding to the positroid cells in Postnikov's decomposition of the TNN Grassmannian, is a distributive lattice. (b) It also yields numerical positivity in the main result of Lam-Postnikov-Pylyavskyy. (c) We show the coordinatewise monotonicity of ratios of Schur polynomials, first proved by Khare-Tao and which is the key result they use to obtain quantitative estimates for positivity preservers. Third, we employ Chevalley operations to show that the majorization order over partitions implicates a partial order for induced character immanants over TNN matrices, proved originally by Skandera-Soskin.
Littlewood--Richardson rules from quivers for two-step flag varieties
Let $\bigwedge_1$ and $\bigwedge_2$ be two symmetric function algebras in independent sets of variables. We define vector space bases of $\bigwedge_1 \otimes_\mathbb{Z} \bigwedge_2$ coming from certain quivers, with vertex sets indexed by pairs of partitions. We use these vector space bases to give a positive tableau formula for Littlewood--Richardson coefficients for the product of Schubert polynomials with certain Schur polynomials in two-step flag varieties, in the spirit of the Remmel-Whitney rule for the product of two Schur polynomials in Grassmannians. This in particular covers the cases considered by the Pieri rule.

Skew odd orthogonal characters and interpolating Schur polynomials
Published in Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. 57 (2025), No. 8, 2509-2530 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce two vertex operators to realize skew odd orthogonal characters $so_{λ/μ}(x^{\pm})$ and derive the Cauchy identity for the skew characters via Toeplitz-Hankel-type determinant similar to the Schur functions. The method also gives new proofs of the Jacobi--Trudi identity and Gelfand--Tsetlin patterns for $so_{λ/μ}(x^{\pm})$. Moreover, combining the vertex operators related to characters of types $C,D$ (\cite{Ba1996,JN2015}) and the new vertex operators related to $B$-type characters, we obtain three families of symmetric polynomials that interpolate among characters of $SO_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$, $SO_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ and $Sp_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$, Their transition formulas are also explicitly given among symplectic and/or orthogonal characters and odd orthogonal characters.
