Chow polynomials of totally nonnegative matrices and posets
Huh-Stevens and Ferroni-Schröter independently conjectured that Hilbert-Poincaré series of Chow rings of geometric lattices have only real zeros. Ferroni, Matherne and the second author extended this conjecture to Chow polynomials of Cohen-Macaulay poset. In this paper we address the above conjectures by providing new defining relations and properties of Chow functions of posets and matrices. These are used, in conjunction with new techniques on interlacing sequences of polynomials, to prove that Chow polynomials of totally nonnegative matrices have only real zeros, which, in turn, proves the above conjectures for a class of posets that contains projective and affine geometries, face lattices of cubical polytopes, partition lattices and Dowling lattices, perfect matroid designs, and lattices of flats of paving matroids. We also study Chow polynomials of Toeplitz matrices in greater detail, and show how these are related the combinatorics of binomial and Sheffer posets, as well as to a family of generalized Eulerian polynomials with coefficients in the ring of symmetric polynomials that have been studied by e.g. Stanley, Brenti, Stembridge and Shareshian-Wachs.

Polynomial actions of rings of integers of global fields and quasirandomness of Paley-type graphs
The goal of this paper is to undertake an in-depth study of the phenomenon behind the Furstenberg--Sárközy theorem, which, in its modern form due to Kamae and Mendès-France, states that if $E$ is a set of integers with positive density and $P$ is an intersective polynomial, then there are distinct elements $x, y \in E$ such that $x - y = P(n)$ for some some $n$. In this paper, we identify an algebraic framework (rings of integers of global fields) for Furstenberg--Sárközy-type theorems. One of our main results establishes necessary and sufficient conditions for a polynomial to satisfy the Furstenberg--Sárközy theorem over the ring of integers of a global field, providing an extension of the result of Kamae and Mendès-France. The Furstenberg--Sárközy phenomenon goes beyond infinite rings and has interesting additional aspects in finite rings. As an example, classical exponential sum estimates can be used to show that large subsets of finite fields contain the asymptotically ``correct'' number of pairs $(x,y)$ whose difference is a square. In previous work, the class of polynomials satisfying this strong form of the Furstenberg--Sárközy theorem over finite fields was classified. In the present paper, we establish asymptotic results characterizing sequences of finite principal ideal rings that produce ``correct'' statistics in the Furstenberg--Sárközy theorem and show that these families are much more general than finite fields. As an application of our enhanced forms of the Furstenberg--Sárközy theorem over finite rings, we produce new families of examples of quasirandom graphs of algebraic origin. The production of these new examples hinges on a two-way connection between asymptotic total ergodicity -- the phenomenon responsible for enhanced versions of the Furstenberg--Sárközy theorem over finite fields and rings -- and quasirandomness.

Graph enumeration for moduli spaces of curves and maps
We develop a calculus based on graph enumeration for $S_n$-equivariant motivic invariants of graphically stratified moduli spaces. We apply our theory to the Deligne--Mumford moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g, n}$ and to the space of torus-fixed stable maps $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g, n}(X, β)^{\mathbb{C}^\star}$ when the target $X$ admits an appropriate $\mathbb{C}^\star$-action, deriving new formulas in each case. A key role is played by the Pólya--Petersen character of a graph, which enriches Pólya's classical cycle index polynomial. This character is valued in an algebra $Λ^{[2]}$ of wreath product symmetric functions, which we study from combinatorial and representation-theoretic perspectives. We prove that this algebra may be viewed as the Grothendieck ring of the category of polynomial functors which take symmetric sequences of vector spaces to vector spaces, building on foundational work of Macdonald. This leads to a plethystic action of $Λ^{[2]}$ on the ring $Λ$ of ordinary symmetric functions. Using this action, we derive our formulas, which ultimately involve only ordinary symmetric functions and the Grothendieck ring of mixed Hodge structures.

Graph entropy, degree assortativity, and hierarchical structures in networks
Published in Physical Review E 112(6): 064315, 2025 • View PublicationBIB
We connect several notions relating the structural and dynamical properties of a graph. Among them are the topological entropy coming from the vertex shift, which is related to the spectral radius of the graph's adjacency matrix, the Randić index, and the degree assortativity. We show that, among all connected graphs with the same degree sequence, the graph having maximum entropy is characterized by a hierarchical structure; namely, it satisfies a breadth-first search ordering with decreasing degrees (BFD-ordering for short). Consequently, the maximum-entropy graph necessarily has high degree assortativity; furthermore, for such a graph the degree centrality and eigenvector centrality coincide. Moreover, the notion of assortativity is related to the general Randić index. We prove that the graph that maximizes the Randić index satisfies a BFD-ordering. For trees, the converse holds as well. We also define a normalized Randić function and show that its maximum value equals the difference of Shannon entropies of two probability distributions defined on the edges and vertices of the graph based on degree correlations.
On some log-concavity properties of the Alexander-Conway and Links-Gould invariants
The Links--Gould invariant $\mathrm{LG}(L ; t_0, t_1)$ of a link $L$ is a two-variable quantum generalization of the Alexander--Conway polynomial $Δ_L(t)$ and has been shown to share some of its most geometric features in several recent works. Here we suggest that $\mathrm{LG}$ likely shares another of the Alexander polynomial's most distinctive - and mysterious - properties: for alternating links, the coefficients of the Links-Gould polynomial alternate and appear to form a log-concave two-indexed sequence with no internal zeros. The former was observed by Ishii for knots with up to 10 crossings. We further conjecture that they satisfy a bidimensional property of unimodality, thereby replicating a long-standing conjecture of Fox (1962) regarding the Alexander polynomial, and a subsequent refinement by Stoimenow. We also point out that the Stoimenow conjecture reflects a more structural phenomenon: after a suitable normalization, the Alexander polynomial of an alternating link appears to be a Lorentzian polynomial. We give compelling experimental and computational evidence for these different properties.

Exponents of $2$-multiarrangements and Wakefield--Yuzvinsky matrices
In the theory of hyperplane arrangements, M. Wakefield and S. Yuzvinsky utilized a square matrix in their research on the exponents of $2$-dimensional multiarrangements. Using such a matrix, they showed that the exponents of $2$-dimensional multiarrangements are as close as possible in general position for any fixed balanced multiplicity. In this article, we introduce a matrix similar to that of Wakefield and Yuzvinsky and explore its further application to the exponents. In fact, exponents of $2$-dimensional multiarrangements are calculated by verifying whether the corresponding matrices have full rank. As the main result, we introduce a new class of $2$-dimensional arrangements with an explicit sequence of multiplicities for which the exponents are closest. We also provide an alternative proof for some known results on exponents.

The $S$-packing coloring of the infinite diagonal grid with $S = (1,6,6,\ldots)$
For a non-decreasing sequence of positive integers $S = (a_1, a_2,\ldots)$, the $S$-packing chromatic number of a graph $G$ is the smallest positive integer $k$ such that the vertices can be colored with $k$ colors, where the distance between any two distinct vertices of color $i$ is greater than $a_i$. In this paper, we show that the $S$-packing chromatic number of the infinite diagonal grid $P_\infty \boxtimes P_\infty$ with $S = (1,6,6,\ldots)$ is $40$. This confirms a conjecture of the first author and Tiyajamorn.
Reduced complexities for sequences over finite alphabets
Letting $w$ denote a finite, nonempty word, let $\text{red}(w)$ denote the word obtained from $w$ by replacing every subword $s$ of $w$ of the form $cc \cdots c$ for a given character $c$ (such that there is no character immediately to the left or right of $s$ equal to $c$) with $c$. Complexity functions for infinite words play important roles within combinatorics on words, and this leads us to introduce and investigate variants of the factor and abelian complexity functions using the given reduction operation. By enumerating words $v$ and $w$ of a given length $n \geq 0$ and associated with an infinite sequence over a finite alphabet such that $\text{red}(v)$ and $\text{red}(w)$ are equal or otherwise equivalent in some specified way, by analogy with the factor and abelian complexity functions, this may be seen as producing simplified versions of previously introduced complexity functions. We prove a recursion for the reduced factor complexity function $ρ_{\mathbf{t}}^{\text{red}}$ for the Thue-Morse sequence $\mathbf{t}$, giving us that $(ρ_{\mathbf{t}}^{\text{red}}(n) : n \in \mathbb{N})$ is a $2$-regular sequence, we prove an explicit evaluation for the reduced factor complexity function $ρ_{\mathbf{f}}^{\text{red}}$ for the (regular) paperfolding sequence $\mathbf{f}$, together with an evaluation for the reduced abelian complexity function $ρ_{\mathbf{f}}^{\text{ab}, \text{red}}$ for $\mathbf{f}$. We conclude with open problems concerning $ρ_{\mathbf{t}}^{\text{ab}, \text{red}}$.

Hopf algebra maps taking chromatic symmetric functions to their graph complements
Cho and van Willigenburg (arXiv:1508.07670) and Alinaeifard, Wang, and van Willgenburg (arXiv:2010.00147) introduce multiplicative chromatic bases for the ring $Λ$ of symmetric functions, consisting of the chromatic symmetric functions (CSFs) of a sequence of connected graphs $G_1,G_2,\dots$ such that $G_n$ has total weight $n$, together with the CSFs of their disjoint unions. In arXiv:1707.04058, Tsujie introduces an alternative ring structure $\widetildeΛ$ on the vector space $Λ$ that makes CSFs multiply over joins instead of over disjoint unions. The $\widetilde{m}_λ$ basis, consisting of all CSFs of weighted cliques, is a multiplicative basis for $\widetildeΛ$, as is the $r_λ$ basis of complete multipartite graphs studied by Penaguiao (arXiv:1803.08824) and Crew and Spirkl (arXiv:2009.14141). We show that one can get more of these "cochromatic bases" (where the starting graphs are combined by joins instead of disjoint unions, hence forming a multiplicative basis for $\widetildeΛ$ instead of $Λ$) if and only if the starting graphs are edgeless. We also show that $\widetildeΛ$ is a Hopf algebra with the same coproduct as $Λ$, and that many of the chromatic bases for $Λ$ generated by cliques can be taken to their corresponding cochromatic bases via Hopf algebra isomorphisms $Λ\to \widetildeΛ.$ We also show that there is a single Hopf algebra morphism taking the CSFs of all unweighted triangle-free graphs to the CSFs of their complements, and we give several more conditions and examples for when one can or cannot find Hopf algebra maps taking the CSFs of certain graphs to the CSFs of their complements. Finally, we show that $K$-analogues of many of the above statements also hold if one instead uses the Kromatic symmetric function (KSF) defined by Crew, Pechenik, and Spirkl (arXiv:2301.02177).

The Serre depth of Stanley-Reisner rings and the depth of their symbolic powers
We investigate an invariant, called the Serre depth, from the perspective of combinatorial commutative algebra. In this paper, we establish several properties of an analogue of the depth of Stanley-Reisner rings. In particular, we relate the Serre depth both to the minimal free resolution of a Stanley-Reisner ring and to that of its Alexander dual. Also, we establish an analogue of a known result that describes the depth of Stanley-Reisner rings in terms of skeletons. Moreover, we study the Serre depth for $(S_{2})$ and the depth on the symbolic powers of Stanley--Reisner ideals. It had been an open question whether the depth of the symbolic powers of Stanley-Reisner ideals satisfies a non-increasing property, but Nguyen and Trung provided a negative answer. We construct an example that the Serre depth for $(S_{2})$ and the depth do not satisfy this property and its second symbolic power is Cohen-Macaulay. Moreover, we prove that the sequence of the Serre depth for $(S_{2})$ on the symbolic powers is convergent and that its limit coincides with the minimum value. Finally, we study the Serre depth on edge and cover ideals. Whether the depth on symbolic powers of edge ideals satisfies a non-increasing property has remained an open question. We address a related problem and show that the Serre depth for $(S_{2})$ on edge ideals of any well-covered graph satisfies a non-increasing property. In addition, we prove that the Serre depth for $(S_{2})$ on the cover ideals of any graph also satisfies a non-increasing property. Moreover, we determine the Serre depth on edge ideals of very well-covered graphs.

Generalized $f$-Eulerian polynomials: zeros and hypergeometric representations with applications
In this paper, we explore (slightly generalized) $f$-Eulerian polynomials introduced by Stanley and frequently appearing in combinatorics. Notable special cases include the classical Eulerian polynomials, the generating polynomials of order polynomials for certain labeled posets, and the $d$-Narayana polynomials. We establish simple sufficient conditions for the reality (and sign) of their zeros and present implications for total positivity of sequences generated by values of polynomials at integers. We further relate these polynomials to generalized Euler's transformations for the generalized hypergeometric functions with integral parameter differences. Exploiting this and other hypergeometric connections, we provide purely hypergeometric proofs for various known and some new properties of $d$-Narayana polynomials. Another family encompassed by our definition of the generalized $f$-Eulerian polynomials is that of Jacobi-Piñeiro type II multiple orthogonal polynomials. Their zero location can thus be analyzed, for both canonical and non-canonical parameter values, without invoking orthogonality. Finally, we present several connection formulas relating $d$-Narayana polynomials to particular Jacobi-Piñeiro polynomials.

Stoimenow matchings avoiding multiple Catalan patterns simultaneously
Motivated by Vassiliev's knot invariants, Stoimenow introduced a special class of matchings, now known as Stoimenow matchings. These matchings have since been linked to various combinatorial structures enumerated by the Fishburn numbers. In a recent paper, a problem posed by Bevan et al. was addressed concerning the identification of subsets of Stoimenow matchings counted by the Catalan numbers. Five such subsets were presented, each defined by the avoidance of a single pattern, referred to as a Catalan pattern, within Stoimenow matchings. In the present paper, we extend this line of research by enumerating all cases of simultaneous avoidance of sets of Catalan patterns in Stoimenow matchings. This comprehensive analysis reveals connections to nine integer sequences listed in the OEIS.

The Power Contamination Problem on Grids Revisited: Optimality, Combinatorics, and Links to Integer Sequences
This paper presents a combinatorial study of the power contamination problem, a dynamic variant of power domination modeled on grid graphs. We resolve a conjecture posed by Ainouche and Bouroubi (2021) by proving it is false and instead establish the exact value of the power contamination number on grid graphs. Furthermore, we derive recurrence relations for this number and initiate the enumeration of optimal contamination sets. We prove that the number of optimal solutions for specific grid families corresponds to well-known integer sequences, including those counting ternary words with forbidden subwords and the large Schröder numbers. This work settles the fundamental combinatorial questions of the power contamination problem on grids and reveals its rich connections to classical combinatorics.

Parities in random Latin squares
In a Latin square, every row can be interpreted as a permutation, and therefore has a parity (even or odd). We prove that in a uniformly random $n\times n$ Latin square, the $n$ row parities are very well approximated by a sequence of $n$ independent unbiased coin flips: for example, the total variation error of this approximation tends to zero as $n\to\infty$. This resolves a conjecture of Cameron. In fact, we prove a generalisation of Cameron's conjecture for the joint distribution of the row parities, column parities and symbol parities (the latter are defined by the symmetry between rows, columns and symbols of a Latin square). Along the way, we introduce several general techniques for the study of random Latin squares, including a new re-randomisation technique via `stable intercalate switchings', and a new approximation theorem comparing random Latin squares with a certain independent model.

Polymatroidal ideals and their asymptotic syzygies
Let $I$ be a polymatroidal ideal. In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of the homological shift ideals of powers of polymatroidal ideals. We prove that the first homological shift algebra $\text{HS}_1(\mathcal{R}(I))$ of $I$ is generated in degree one as a module over the Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}(I)$ of $I$. We conjecture that the $i$th homological shift algebra $\text{HS}_i(\mathcal{R}(I))$ of $I$ is generated in degrees $\le i$, and we confirm it in many significant cases. We show that $I$ has the $1$st homological strong persistence property, and we conjecture that the sequence $\{\text{Ass}\,\text{HS}_i(I^k)\}_{k>0}$ of associated primes of $\text{HS}_i(I^k)$ becomes an increasing chain for $k\ge i$. This conjecture is established when $i=1$ and for many families of polymatroidal ideals. Finally, we explore componentwise polymatroidal ideals, and we prove that $\text{HS}_1(I)$ is again componentwise polymatroidal, if $I$ is componentwise polymatroidal.
Card Dealing Math
Various card tricks involve under-down dealing, where alternatively one card is placed under the deck and the next card is dealt. We study how the cards need to be prepared in the deck to be dealt in order. The order in which the $N$ cards are prepared defines a permutation. In this work, we analyze general dealing patterns, considering properties of the resulting permutations. We give recursive formulas for these permutations, their inverses, the final dealt card, and the dealing order of the first card. We discuss some particular examples of dealing patterns and conclude with an analysis of several existing and novel magic card tricks making use of dealing patterns. Our discussions involve 30 existing sequences in the OEIS, and we introduce 44 new sequences to that database.
Cycle systems, coparking functions, and h-vectors of matroids
The h-vector of a matroid M is an important invariant related to the independence complex of M and can also be recovered from an evaluation of its Tutte polynomial. A well-known conjecture of Stanley posits that the h-vector of a matroid is a pure O-sequence, meaning that it can be obtained by counting faces of a pure multicomplex. Merino has established Stanley's conjecture for the case of cographic matroids via chip-firing on graphs and the concept of a G-parking function. Inspired by these constructions, we introduce the notion of a cycle system for a matroid M -- a family of cycles (unions of circuits) of M with overlap properties that mimic cut-sets in a graph. A choice of cycle system on M defines a collection of integer sequences that we call coparking functions. We show that for any cycle system on M, the set of coparking functions is in bijection with the set of bases of M. We show that maximal coparking functions all have the same degree, and that cycle systems behave well under deletion and contraction. This leads to a proof of Stanley's conjecture for the case of matroids that admit cycle systems, which include, for instance, graphic matroids of cones as well as K33-free graphs.

Short history of signed exceptional sequences
Whereas exceptional sequences have a long history with many well-known connections to combinatorics, signed exceptional sequences are relatively recent. The authors introduced this concept in 2017 [19], although it was retroactively realized that the category of noncrossing partitions [24] is a special case of this construction. Buan and Marsh [4] have introduced the concept of $τ$-exceptional sequences to generalize the definitions and theorems to all finite dimensional algebras. This short paper is the story of the original concept of signed exceptional sequences for hereditary algebras and how it developed out of the two authors' study of algebraic K-theory, link invariants, and cluster combinatorics.
Orthogonal polynomials, quantum walks and the Prouhet-Tarry-Escott problem
This paper is motivated by the following problem. Define a quantum walk on a positively weighted path (linear chain). Can the weights be tuned so that perfect state transfer occurs between the first vertex and any other position? We do not fully answer this question - in fact, we show that a particular case of this problem is equivalent to a solution of a particular case of the well known Prouhet-Tarry-Escott problem, deeming our original task certainly harder than anticipated. In our journey, we prove new results about sequences of orthogonal polynomials satisfying three-term recurrences. In particular, we provide a full characterization of when two polynomials belong to such a sequence, which (as far as we were able to ascertain) was known only for when their degrees differ by one.

Catalan structures arising from pattern-avoiding Stoimenow matchings and other Fishburn objects
In connection with Vassiliev's knot invariants, Stoimenow introduced in 1998 a class of matchings, also known as regular linearized chord diagrams. These matchings are linked to various combinatorial structures, all of which are associated with the Fishburn numbers. In this paper, we address a problem posed by Bevan et~al.\ concerning the identification of subsets of Stoimenow matchings that are counted by the Catalan numbers. We present five solutions in terms of pattern-avoiding matchings. We also consider four infinite families of patterns that generalize four of the five forbidden patterns appearing in the solution to the problem we solved and prove that the matchings avoiding them are equinumerous. Finally, we establish numerous results on distributions and joint equidistribution of statistics over Catalan-counted subsets of Fishburn structures, namely Stoimenow matchings, $(2+2)$-free posets, ascent sequences, and Fishburn permutations, notably expressing some of them in terms of Narayana numbers and others in terms of ballot numbers.
