Cumulants, free cumulants and half-shuffles
Published in Proc. R. Soc. A: 2015, Volume: 471, Issue: 2176 • View PublicationBIB
Free cumulants were introduced as the proper analog of classical cumulants in the theory of free probability. There is a mix of similarities and differences, when one considers the two families of cumulants. Whereas the combinatorics of classical cumulants is well expressed in terms of set partitions, the one of free cumulants is described, and often introduced in terms of non-crossing set partitions. The formal series approach to classical and free cumulants also largely differ. It is the purpose of the present article to put forward a different approach to these phenomena. Namely, we show that cumulants, whether classical or free, can be understood in terms of the algebra and combinatorics underlying commutative as well as non-commutative (half-)shuffles and (half-)unshuffles. As a corollary, cumulants and free cumulants can be characterized through linear fixed point equations. We study the exponential solutions of these linear fixed point equations, which display well the commutative, respectively non-commutative, character of classical, respectively free, cumulants.

An extension of MacMahon's Equidistribution Theorem to ordered set partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove a conjecture of Haglund which can be seen as an extension of the equidistribution of the inversion number and the major index over permutations to ordered set partitions. Haglund's conjecture implicitly defines two statistics on ordered set partitions and states that they are equidistributed. The implied inversion statistic is equivalent to a statistic on ordered set partitions studied by Steingrímsson, Ishikawa, Kasraoui, and Zeng, and is known to have a nice distribution in terms of $q$-Stirling numbers. The resulting major index exhibits a combinatorial relationship between $q$-Stirling numbers and the Euler-Mahonian distribution on the symmetric group, solving a problem posed by Steingrímsson.

A special role of Boolean quadratic polytopes among other combinatorial polytopes
Published in Model. Anal. Inform. Sist., 23(1), 23-40, 2016 • View PublicationBIB
We consider several families of combinatorial polytopes associated with the following NP-complete problems: maximum cut, Boolean quadratic programming, quadratic linear ordering, quadratic assignment, set partition, set packing, stable set, 3-assignment. For comparing two families of polytopes we use the following method. We say that a family $P$ is affinely reduced to a family $Q$ if for every polytope $p\in P$ there exists $q\in Q$ such that $p$ is affinely equivalent to $q$ or to a face of $q$, where $\dim q = O((\dim p)^k)$ for some constant $k$. Under this comparison the above-mentioned families are splitted into two equivalence classes. We show also that these two classes are simpler (in the above sence) than the families of poytopes of the following problems: set covering, traveling salesman, 0-1 knapsack problem, 3-satisfiability, cubic subgraph, partial ordering. In particular, Boolean quadratic polytopes appear as faces of polytopes in every of the mentioned families.

Modeling languages from graph networks
We model and compute the probability distribution of the letters in random generated words in a language by using the theory of set partitions, Young tableaux and graph theoretical representation methods. This has been of interest for several application areas such as network systems, bioinformatics, internet search, data mining and computacional linguistics.

Heaps and Two Exponential Structures
Published • View PublicationBIB
Take ${\sf Q}=({\sf Q}_1,{\sf Q}_2,\ldots)$ to be an exponential structure and $M(n)$ to be the number of minimal elements of ${\sf Q}_n$ where $M(0)=1$. Then a sequence of numbers $\{r_n({\sf Q}_n)\}_{n\ge 1}$ is defined by the equation \begin{eqnarray*} \sum_{n\ge 1}r_n({\sf Q}_n)\frac{z^n}{n!\,M(n)}=-\log(\sum_{n\ge 0}(-1)^n\frac{z^n}{n!\,M(n)}). \end{eqnarray*} Let $\bar{\sf Q}_n$ denote the poset ${\sf Q}_n$ with a $\hat{0}$ adjoined and let $\hat{1}$ denote the unique maximal element in the poset ${\sf Q}_n$. Furthermore, let $μ_{{\sf Q}_n}$ be the Möbius function on the poset $\bar{\sf Q}_n$. Stanley proved that $r_n({\sf Q}_n)=(-1)^nμ_{{\sf Q}_n}(\hat{0},\hat{1})$. This implies that the numbers $r_n({\sf Q}_n)$ are integers. In this paper, we study the cases ${\sf Q}_n=Π_n^{(r)}$ and ${\sf Q}_n={\sf Q}_n^{(r)}$ where $Π_n^{(r)}$ and ${\sf Q}_n^{(r)}$ are posets, respectively, of set partitions of $[rn]$ whose block sizes are divisible by $r$ and of $r$-partitions of $[n]$. In both cases we prove that $r_n(Π_n^{(r)})$ and $r_n({\sf Q}_n^{(r)})$ enumerate the pyramids by applying the Cartier-Foata monoid identity and further prove that $r_n(Π_n^{(r)})$ is the generalized Euler number $E_{rn-1}$ and that $r_n({\sf Q}_n^{(2)})$ is the number of complete non-ambiguous trees of size $2n-1$ by bijections. This gives a new proof of Welker's theorem that $r_n(Π_n^{(r)})=E_{rn-1}$ and implies the construction of $r$-dimensional complete non-ambiguous trees. As a bonus of applying the theory of heaps, we establish a bijection between the set of complete non-ambiguous forests and the set of pairs of permutations with no common rise. This answers an open question raised by Aval {\it et al.}.

Refined enumeration of noncrossing chains and hook formulas
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 19(3) (2015), 443--460 • View PublicationBIB
In the combinatorics of finite finite Coxeter groups, there is a simple formula giving the number of maximal chains of noncrossing partitions. It is a reinterpretation of a result by Deligne which is due to Chapoton, and the goal of this article is to refine the formula. First, we prove a one-parameter generalization, by the considering enumeration of noncrossing chains where we put a weight on some relations. Second, we consider an equivalence relation on noncrossing chains coming from the natural action of the group on set partitions, and we show that each equivalence class has a simple generating function. Using this we recover Postnikov's hook length formula in type A and obtain a variant in type B.

The Hopf monoid on nonnesting supercharacters of pattern groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct supercharacter theories for a collection of unipotent matrix groups and produce a Hopf monoid from the supercharacters. These supercharacter theories are coarser than those defined by Diaconis--Isaacs for algebra groups and have supercharacters and superclasses indexed by nonnesting labeled set partitions. We compute the supercharacter tables and describe the product and coproduct of the Hopf monoid combinatorially. We also show that this Hopf monoid is free.

Restrictions of rainbow supercharacters
Published • View PublicationBIB
The maximal subgroup of unipotent upper-triangular matrices of the finite general linear groups are a fundamental family of $p$-groups. Their representation theory is well-known to be wild, but there is a standard supercharacter theory, replacing irreducible representations by super-representations, that gives us some control over its representation theory. While this theory has a beautiful underlying combinatorics built on set partitions, the structure constants of restricted super-representations remain mysterious. This paper proposes a new approach to solving the restriction problem by constructing natural intermediate modules that help "factor" the computation of the structure constants. We illustrate the technique by solving the problem completely in the case of rainbow supercharacters (and some generalizations). Along the way we introduce a new $q$-analogue of the binomial coefficients that depend on an underlying poset.

On permutations avoiding the dashed patterns 32-41 and 41-32
We show that permutations of size $n$ avoiding both of the dashed patterns 32-41 and 41-32 are equinumerous with indecomposable set partitions of size $n+1$, and deduce a related result.

Nested sets, set partitions and Kirkman-Cayley dissection numbers

In this paper we show a a proof by explicit bijections of the famous Kirkman-Cayley formula for the number of dissections of a convex polygon. Our starting point is the bijective correspondence between the set of nested sets made by \(k\) subsets of \(\{1,2,...,n\}\) with cardinality \(\geq 2\) and the set of partitions of \(\{1,2,...,n+k-1\}\) into \(k\) parts with cardinality \(\geq 2\).

Restricted ascent sequences and Catalan numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
Ascent sequences are those consisting of non-negative integers in which the size of each letter is restricted by the number of ascents preceding it and have been shown to be equinumerous with the (2+2)-free posets of the same size. Furthermore, connections to a variety of other combinatorial structures, including set partitions, permutations, and certain integer matrices, have been made. In this paper, we identify all members of the (4,4)-Wilf equivalence class for ascent sequences corresponding to the Catalan number C_n=\frac{1}{n+1}\binom{2n}{n}. This extends recent work concerning avoidance of a single pattern and provides apparently new combinatorial interpretations for C_n. In several cases, the subset of the class consisting of those members having exactly m ascents is given by the Narayana number N_{n,m+1}=\frac{1}{n}\binom{n}{m+1}\binom{n}{m}.
Noncommutative Bell polynomials, quasideterminants and incidence Hopf algebras
Published in International Journal of Algebra and Computation, Volume 24, Issue 05, August 2014 • View PublicationBIB
Bell polynomials appear in several combinatorial constructions throughout mathematics. Perhaps most naturally in the combinatorics of set partitions, but also when studying compositions of diffeomorphisms on vector spaces and manifolds, and in the study of cumulants and moments in probability theory. We construct commutative and noncommutative Bell polynomials and explain how they give rise to Faà di Bruno Hopf algebras. We use the language of incidence Hopf algebras, and along the way provide a new description of antipodes in noncommutative incidence Hopf algebras, involving quasideterminants. We also discuss Möbius inversion in certain Hopf algebras built from Bell polynomials.
Multivariate Juggling Probabilities
Published in Electron. J. Probab. 20 (2015), no. 5, 1-29 • View PublicationBIB
We consider refined versions of Markov chains related to juggling introduced by Warrington. We further generalize the construction to juggling with arbitrary heights as well as infinitely many balls, which are expressed more succinctly in terms of Markov chains on integer partitions. In all cases, we give explicit product formulas for the stationary probabilities. The normalization factor in one case can be explicitly written as a homogeneous symmetric polynomial. We also refine and generalize enriched Markov chains on set partitions. Lastly, we prove that in one case, the stationary distribution is attained in bounded time.
Bell polynomials in combinatorial Hopf algebras
Partial multivariate Bell polynomials have been defined by E.T. Bell in 1934. These polynomials have numerous applications in Combinatorics, Analysis, Algebra, Probabilities, etc. Many of the formulae on Bell polynomials involve combinatorial objects (set partitions, set partitions in lists, permutations, etc.). So it seems natural to investigate analogous formulae in some combinatorial Hopf algebras with bases indexed by these objects. The algebra of symmetric functions is the most famous example of a combinatorial Hopf algebra. In a first time, we show that most of the results on Bell polynomials can be written in terms of symmetric functions and transformations of alphabets. Then, we show that these results are clearer when stated in other Hopf algebras (this means that the combinatorial objects appear explicitly in the formulae). We investigate also the connexion with the Fa{à} di Bruno Hopf algebra and the Lagrange-B{ü}rmann formula.

Strong forms of self-duality for Hopf monoids in species
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 368 (2016), 5433-5473 • View PublicationBIB
A vector species is a functor from the category of finite sets with bijections to vector spaces (over a fixed field); informally, one can view this as a sequence of $S_n$-modules. A Hopf monoid (in the category of vector species) consists of a vector species with unit, counit, product, and coproduct morphisms satisfying several compatibility conditions, analogous to a graded Hopf algebra. A vector species has a basis if and only if it is given by a sequence of $S_n$-modules which are permutation representations. We say that a Hopf monoid is freely self-dual if it is connected and finite-dimensional, and if it has a basis in which the structure constants of its product and coproduct coincide. Such Hopf monoids are self-dual in the usual sense, and we show that they are furthermore both commutative and cocommutative. We prove more specific classification theorems for freely self-dual Hopf monoids whose products (respectively, coproducts) are linearized in the sense that they preserve the basis; we call such Hopf monoids strongly self-dual (respectively, linearly self-dual). In particular, we show that every strongly self-dual Hopf monoid has a basis isomorphic to some species of block-labeled set partitions, on which the product acts as the disjoint union. In turn, every linearly self-dual Hopf monoid has a basis isomorphic to the species of maps to a fixed set, on which the coproduct acts as restriction. It follows that every linearly self-dual Hopf monoid is strongly self-dual. Our final results concern connected Hopf monoids which are finite-dimensional, commutative, and cocommutative. We prove that such a Hopf monoid has a basis in which its product and coproduct are both linearized if and only if it is strongly self-dual with respect to a basis equipped with a certain partial order, generalizing the refinement partial order on set partitions.

The topology of restricted partition posets
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 37 (2013), 643--666 • View PublicationBIB
For each composition $\vec{c}$ we show that the order complex of the poset of pointed set partitions $Π^{\bullet}_{\vec{c}}$ is a wedge of spheres of the same dimension with the multiplicity given by the number of permutations with descent composition $\vec{c}$. Furthermore, the action of the symmetric group on the top homology is isomorphic to the Specht module $S^{B}$ where $B$ is a border strip associated to the composition. We also study the filter of pointed set partitions generated by a knapsack integer partition and show the analogous results on homotopy type and action on the top homology.

Supercharacters of unipotent groups defined by involutions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct supercharacter theories of finite unipotent groups in the orthogonal, symplectic and unitary types. Our method utilizes group actions in a manner analogous to that of Diaconis and Isaacs in their construction of supercharacters of algebra groups. The resulting supercharacter theories agree with those of André and Neto in the case of the unipotent orthogonal and symplectic matrices and generalize to a large collection of subgroups. In the unitary group case, we describe the supercharacters and superclasses in terms of labeled set partitions and calculate the supercharacter table.
The Set Partitions: Solution for the sharing secret keys
Confidentiality was and will always remain a critical need in the exchanges either between persons or the official parties. Recently, cryptology has made a jump, from classical form to the quantum one, we talk about quantum cryptography. This theory, although is perfectly safe, there are still binding limits of implementation. In this paper, we developed a new cryptographic protocol, called BCB12 protocol, which will be used to provide random keys shared via a classical channel, using the set partitions. Each key can be long enough that the plain text in question, in purpose, for instance, to hide then to transmit the secret information using the Vernam cipher.

In 1962 O. A. Gross proved that the last digits of the Fubini numbers (or surjective numbers) have a simple periodicity property. We extend this result to a wider class of combinatorial numbers coming from restricted set partitions.
