Counting subwords in flattened permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we consider the number of occurrences of descents, ascents, 123-subwords, 321-subwords, peaks and valleys in flattened permutations, which were recently introduced by Callan in his study of finite set partitions. For descents and ascents, we make use of the kernel method and obtain an explicit formula (in terms of Eulerian polynomials) for the distribution on $\mathcal{S}_n$ in the flattened sense. For the other four patterns in question, we develop a unified approach to obtain explicit formulas for the comparable distributions. We find that the formulas so obtained for 123- and 321-subwords can be expressed in terms of the Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind, while those for peaks and valleys are more related to the Eulerian polynomials. We also provide a bijection showing the equidistribution of descents in flattened permutations of a given length with big descents in permutations of the same length in the usual sense.

Pattern avoidance in ordered set partitions and words
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the enumeration of ordered set partitions avoiding a permutation pattern, as introduced by Godbole, Goyt, Herdan and Pudwell. Let $\op_{n,k}(p)$ be the number of ordered set partitions of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ into $k$ blocks that avoid a permutation pattern $p$. We establish an explicit identity between the number $\op_{n,k}(p)$ and the numbers of words avoiding the inverse of $p$. This identity allows us to easily translate results on pattern-avoiding words obtained in earlier works into equivalent results on pattern-avoiding ordered set partitions. In particular, \emph{(a)} we determine the asymptotic growth rate of the sequence $(\op_{n,k}(p))_{n\geq 1}$ for every positive $k$ and every permutation pattern $p$, \emph{(b)} we partially confirm a conjecture of Godbole et al. concerning the variation of the sequences $(\op_{n,k}p))_{1\leq k\leq n}$, \emph{(c)} we undertake a detailed study of the number of ordered set partitions avoiding a pattern of length 3.

Average values of some Z-parameters in a random set partition
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 18 (2011), no. 1, P228 • Search Publication
We find exact and asymptotic formulas for the average values of several statistics on set partitions: of Carlitz's $q$-Stirling distributions, of the numbers of crossings in linear and circular representations of set partitions, of the numbers of overlappings and embracings, and of the numbers of occurrences of a 2-pattern.
Closed expressions for averages of set partition statistics
Published • View PublicationBIB
In studying the enumerative theory of super characters' of the group of upper triangular matrices over a finite field we found that the moments (mean, variance and higher moments) of novel statistics on set partitions have simple closed expressions as linear combinations of shifted bell numbers. It is shown here that families of other statistics have similar moments. The coefficients in the linear combinations are polynomials in $n$. This allows exact enumeration of the moments for small $n$ to determine exact formulae for all $n$.

On the inner structure of a permutation: Bicolored Partitions and Eulerians, Trees and Primitives
We present a bijective algorithm with which an arbitrary permutation decomposes canonically into elementary blocks which we call families, which are sets with a specified number of ascents and descents. We show that families, arranged in an arbitrary order in a sequence, are in bijection with permutations. The permutation decomposes canonically, by inserting parentheses, into a tree having as nodes a class of permutations which we call primitive. Primitive permutations can be assembled from very simple data. The data for the trees into which a permutation decomposes can be written in a form similar to the decimal classification of a library. We axiomatize that data. It has a structure very different from the permutation which it encodes, with shuffles and pairings instead of reorderings. These structures are similar to the fundamental processes in quantum field theory. Our main bijective structure algorithm gives explicit, additive multinomial formulae for the number of permutations with given sets of elements under and over the diagonal, or with given ascent and descent values. The multinomial expressions obtained this way give a new class of bicolored set statistics, between set partitions and set compositions, called shifted multinomials. These provide for the first time additive multinomial expressions for Eulerian numbers and derangements, as part of a sequence of new combinatorial objects. These multinomial expressions satisfy inductive relations involving only immediate neighbors, similar to the relations satisfied by the Eulerian numbers.

A generalization of Euler numbers to finite Coxeter groups
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 19(2) (2015), 325--336 • View PublicationBIB
It is known that Euler numbers, defined as the Taylor coefficients of the tangent and secant functions, count alternating permutations in the symmetric group. Springer defined a generalization of these numbers for each finite Coxeter group by considering the largest descent class, and computed the value in each case of the classification. We consider here another generalization of Euler numbers for finite Coxeter groups, building on Stanley's result about the number of orbits of maximal chains of set partitions. We present a method to compute these integers and obtain the value in each case of the classification.

On Multiple Pattern Avoiding Set Partitions
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics, 50(2) (2013), 292-326 • View PublicationBIB
We study classes of set partitions determined by the avoidance of multiple patterns, applying a natural notion of partition containment that has been introduced by Sagan. We say that two sets S and T of patterns are equivalent if for each n, the number of partitions of size n avoiding all the members of S is the same as the number of those that avoid all the members of T. Our goal is to classify the equivalence classes among two-element pattern sets of several general types. First, we focus on pairs of patterns {σ,τ}, where σ is a pattern of size three with at least two distinct symbols and τ is an arbitrary pattern of size k that avoids σ. We show that pattern-pairs of this type determine a small number of equivalence classes; in particular, the classes have on average exponential size in k. We provide a (sub-exponential) upper bound for the number of equivalence classes, and provide an explicit formula for the generating function of all such avoidance classes, showing that in all cases this generating function is rational. Next, we study partitions avoiding a pair of patterns of the form {1212,τ}, where τ is an arbitrary pattern. Note that partitions avoiding 1212 are exactly the non-crossing partitions. We provide several general equivalence criteria for pattern pairs of this type, and show that these criteria account for all the equivalences observed when τ has size at most six. In the last part of the paper, we perform a full classification of the equivalence classes of all the pairs {σ,τ}, where σ and τ have size four.

On the limiting distribution of some numbers of crossings in set partitions
We study the asymptotic distribution of the two following combinatorial parameters: the number of arc crossings in the linear representation, ${\mathrm cr^{(\ell)}$, and the number of chord crossings in the circular representation, ${\mathrm cr^{(c)}$, of a random set partition. We prove that, for $k\leq n/(2\,\log n)$ (resp., ${k=o(\sqrt{n})}$), the distribution of the parameter ${\mathrm cr^{(\ell)}$ (resp., ${\mathrm cr^{(c)}$) taken over partitions of $[n]:=\{1,2,...,n\}$ into $k$ blocks is, after standardization, asymptotically Gaussian as $n$ tends to infinity. We give exact and asymptotic formulas for the variance of the distribution of the parameter ${\mathrm cr^{(\ell)}$ from which we deduce that the distribution of ${\mathrm cr^{(\ell)}$ and ${\mathrm cr^{(c)}$ taken over all partitions of $[n]$ is concentrated around its mean. The proof of these results relies on a standard analysis of generating functions associated with the parameter ${\mathrm cr^{(\ell)}$ obtained in earlier work of Stanton, Zeng and the author. We also determine the maximum values of the parameters ${\mathrm cr^{(\ell)}$ and ${\mathrm cr^{(c)}$.

On Packing Densities of Set Partitions
We study packing densities for set partitions, which is a generalization of packing words. We use results from the literature about packing densities for permutations and words to provide packing densities for set partitions. These results give us most of the packing densities for partitions of the set $\{1,2,3\}$. In the final section we determine the packing density of the set partition $\{\{1,3\},\{2\}\}$.

Pattern Avoidance in Ordered Set Partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we consider the enumeration of ordered set partitions avoiding a permutation pattern of length 2 or 3. We provide an exact enumeration for avoiding the permutation 12. We also give exact enumeration for ordered partitions with 3 blocks and ordered partitions with n-1 blocks avoiding a permutation of length 3. We use enumeration schemes to recursively enumerate 123-avoiding ordered partitions with any block sizes. Finally, we give some asymptotic results for the growth rates of the number of ordered set partitions avoiding a single pattern; including a Stanley-Wilf type that exhibits existence of such growth rates.

Crossings and Nestings for Arc-Coloured Permutations
Published in DMTCS Proceedings, 0(01):743-754, 2013 • View PublicationBIB
The equidistribution of many crossing and nesting statistics exists in several combinatorial objects like matchings, set partitions, permutations, and embedded labelled graphs. The involutions switching nesting and crossing numbers for set partitions given by Krattenthaler, also by Chen, Deng, Du, Stanley, and Yan, and for permutations given by Burrill, Mishna, and Post involved passing through tableau-like objects. Recently, Chen and Guo for matchings, and Marberg for set partitions extended the result to coloured arc annotated diagrams. We prove that symmetric joint distribution continues to hold for arc-coloured permutations. As in Marberg's recent work, but through a different interpretation, we also conclude that the ordinary generating functions for all $j$-noncrossing, $k$-nonnesting, $r$-coloured permutations according to size $n$ are rational functions. We use the interpretation to automate the generation of these rational series for both noncrossing and nonnesting coloured set partitions and permutations.

Pattern avoidance in matchings and partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Extending the notion of pattern avoidance in permutations, we study matchings and set partitions whose arc diagram representation avoids a given configuration of three arcs. These configurations, which generalize 3-crossings and 3-nestings, have an interpretation, in the case of matchings, in terms of patterns in full rook placements on Ferrers boards. We enumerate 312-avoiding matchings and partitions, obtaining algebraic generating functions, in contrast with the known D-finite generating functions for the 321-avoiding (i.e., 3-noncrossing) case. Our approach also provides a more direct proof of a formula of Bóna for the number of 1342-avoiding permutations. Additionally, we give a bijection proving the shape-Wilf-equivalence of the patterns 321 and 213 which greatly simplifies existing proofs by Backelin--West--Xin and Jelínek, and provides an extension of work of Gouyou-Beauchamps for matchings with fixed points. Finally, we classify pairs of patterns of length 3 according to shape-Wilf-equivalence, and enumerate matchings and partitions avoiding a pair in most of the resulting equivalence classes.

A Bijection for Crossings and Nestings
For a subclass of matchings, set partitions, and permutations, we describe a direct bijection involving only arc annotated diagrams that not only interchanges maximum nesting and crossing numbers, but also all refinements of crossing and nesting numbers. Furthermore, we show that the bijection cannot be applied to a similar class of coloured arc annotated diagrams.

Ascent sequences and 3-nonnesting set partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
A sequence x=x_1 x_2...x_n $ is said to be an ascent sequence of length $n$ if it satisfies x_1=0 and $0\leq x_i\leq asc(x_1x_2...x_{i-1})+1$ for all $2\leq i\leq n$, where $asc(x_1x_2... x_{i-1})$ is the number of ascents in the sequence $x_1x_2... x_{i-1}$. Recently, Duncan and Steingrímsson proposed the conjecture that 210-avoiding ascent sequences of length $n$ are equinumerous with 3-nonnesting set partitions of $\{1,2,..., n\}$. In this paper, we confirm this conjecture by showing that 210-avoiding ascent sequences of length $n$ are in bijection with 3-nonnesting set partitions of $\{1,2,..., n\}$ via an intermediate structure of growth diagrams for 01-fillings of Ferrers shapes.

Parallelogram polyominoes, the sandpile model on a complete bipartite graph, and a q,t-Narayana polynomial
We classify recurrent configurations of the sandpile model on the complete bipartite graph K_{m,n} in which one designated vertex is a sink. We present a bijection from these recurrent configurations to decorated parallelogram polyominoes whose bounding box is a m*n rectangle. Several special types of recurrent configurations and their properties via this bijection are examined. For example, recurrent configurations whose sum of heights is minimal are shown to correspond to polyominoes of least area. Two other classes of recurrent configurations are shown to be related to bicomposition matrices, a matrix analogue of set partitions, and (2+2)-free partially ordered sets. A canonical toppling process for recurrent configurations gives rise to a path within the associated parallelogram polyominoes. This path bounces off the external edges of the polyomino, and is reminiscent of Haglund's well-known bounce statistic for Dyck paths. We define a collection of polynomials that we call q,t-Narayana polynomials, defined to be the generating function of the bistatistic (area, parabounce) on the set of parallelogram polyominoes, akin to the (area, hagbounce) bistatistic defined on Dyck paths in Haglund (2003). In doing so, we have extended a bistatistic of Egge, Haglund, Kremer and Killpatrick (2003) to the set of parallelogram polyominoes. This is one answer to their question concerning extensions to other combinatorial objects. We conjecture the q,t-Narayana polynomials to be symmetric and prove this conjecture for numerous special cases. We also show a relationship between Haglund's (area, hagbounce) statistic on Dyck paths, and our bistatistic (area, parabounce) on a sub-collection of those parallelogram polyominoes living in a (n+1)*n rectangle.

Statistical Distributions and $q$-Analogues of $k$-Fibonacci Numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study $q$-analogues of $k$-Fibonacci numbers that arise from weighted tilings of an $n\times1$ board with tiles of length at most $k$. The weights on our tilings arise naturally out of distributions of permutations statistics and set partitions statistics. We use these $q$-analogues to produce $q$-analogues of identities involving $k$-Fibonacci numbers. This is a natural extension of results of the first author and Sagan on set partitions and the first author and Mathisen on permutations. In this paper we give general $q$-analogues of $k$-Fibonacci identities for arbitrary weights that depend only on lengths and locations of tiles. We then determine weights for specific permutation or set partition statistics and use these specific weights and the general identities to produce specific identities.

Crossings and nestings in colored set partitions
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 20 (2013), no. 4, Research Paper 6 • View PublicationBIB
Chen, Deng, Du, Stanley, and Yan introduced the notion of $k$-crossings and $k$-nestings for set partitions, and proved that the sizes of the largest $k$-crossings and $k$-nestings in the partitions of an $n$-set possess a symmetric joint distribution. This work considers a generalization of these results to set partitions whose arcs are labeled by an $r$-element set (which we call \emph{$r$-colored set partitions}). In this context, a $k$-crossing or $k$-nesting is a sequence of arcs, all with the same color, which form a $k$-crossing or $k$-nesting in the usual sense. After showing that the sizes of the largest crossings and nestings in colored set partitions likewise have a symmetric joint distribution, we consider several related enumeration problems. We prove that $r$-colored set partitions with no crossing arcs of the same color are in bijection with certain paths in $\NN^r$, generalizing the correspondence between noncrossing (uncolored) set partitions and 2-Motzkin paths. Combining this with recent work of Bousquet-Mélou and Mishna affords a proof that the sequence counting noncrossing 2-colored set partitions is P-recursive. We also discuss how our methods extend to several variations of colored set partitions with analogous notions of crossings and nestings.

Avoiding colored partitions of two elements in the pattern sense
Enumeration of pattern-avoiding objects is an active area of study with connections to such disparate regions of mathematics as Schubert varieties and stack-sortable sequences. Recent research in this area has brought attention to colored permutations and colored set partitions. A colored partition of a set $S$ is a partition of $S$ with each element receiving a color from the set $[k]=\{1,2,...,k\}$. Let $Π_n\wr C_k$ be the set of partitions of $[n]$ with colors from $[k]$. In an earlier work, the authors study pattern avoidance in colored set partitions in the equality sense. Here we study pattern avoidance in colored partitions in the pattern sense. We say that $σ\inΠ_n\wr C_k$ contains $π\in Π_m\wr C_\ell$ in the pattern sense if $σ$ contains a copy $π$ when the colors are ignored and the colors on this copy of $π$ are order isomorphic to the colors on $π$. Otherwise we say that $σ$ avoids $π$. We focus on patterns from $Π_2\wr C_2$ and find that many familiar and some new integer sequences appear. We provide bijective proofs wherever possible, and we provide formulas for computing those sequences that are new.

Hopf monoids from class functions on unitriangular matrices
Published in Algebra and Number Theory, Vol. 7-7 (2013) 1743-1779 • View PublicationBIB
We build, from the collection of all groups of unitriangular matrices, Hopf monoids in Joyal's category of species. Such structure is carried by the collection of class function spaces on those groups, and also by the collection of superclass function spaces, in the sense of Diaconis and Isaacs. Superclasses of unitriangular matrices admit a simple description from which we deduce a combinatorial model for the Hopf monoid of superclass functions, in terms of the Hadamard product of the Hopf monoids of linear orders and of set partitions. This implies a recent result relating the Hopf algebra of superclass functions on unitriangular matrices to symmetric functions in noncommuting variables. We determine the algebraic structure of the Hopf monoid: it is a free monoid in species, with the canonical Hopf structure. As an application, we derive certain estimates on the number of conjugacy classes of unitriangular matrices.

New Wilf-equivalence results for dashed patterns
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a sufficient condition for the two dashed patterns $τ^{(1)}-τ^{(2)}-\cdots-τ^{(\ell)}$ and $τ^{(\ell)}-τ^{(\ell-1)}-\cdots-τ^{(1)}$ to be (strongly) Wilf-equivalent. This permits to solve in a unified way several problems of Heubach and Mansour on Wilf-equivalences on words and compositions, as well as a conjecture of Baxter and Pudwell on Wilf-equivalences on permutations. We also give a better explanation of the equidistribution of the parameters $\MAK+\bMAJ$ and $\MAK'+\bMAJ$ on ordered set partitions. These results can be viewed as consequences of a simple proposition which states that the set valued statistics "descent set'' and "rise set'' are equidistributed over each equivalence class of the partially commutative monoid generated by a poset $(X,\leq)$.
