In this paper, we focus on families of bipartitions, i.e. set partitions consisting of at most two components. We say that a family of bipartitions is a separating family for a set $S$ if every two elements in $S$ can be separated by some bipartition. Furthermore, we call a separating family minimal if no proper subfamily is a separating family. We characterize the set of all minimal separating families of maximum size for arbitrary set $S$ as the set of all spanning trees on $S$ and enumerate minimal separating families of maximum size. Furthermore, we enumerate separating families of arbitrary size, which need not be minimal.

In this paper, we study the homology of the coloring complex and the cyclic coloring complex of a complete $k$-uniform hypergraph. We show that the coloring complex of a complete $k$-uniform hypergraph is shellable, and we determine the rank of its unique nontrivial homology group in terms of its chromatic polynomial. We also show that the dimension of the $(n-k-1)^{st}$ homology group of the cyclic coloring complex of a complete $k$-uniform hypergraph is given by a binomial coefficient. Further, we discuss a complex whose $r$-faces consist of all ordered set partitions $[B_1, \hdots, B_{r+2}]$ where none of the $B_i$ contain a hyperedge of the complete $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ and where $1 \in B_1$. It is shown that the dimensions of the homology groups of this complex are given by binomial coefficients. As a consequence, this result gives the dimensions of the multilinear parts of the cyclic homology groups of $\C[x_1, \hdots, x_n]/ \{x_{i_1} \hdots x_{i_k} \mid i_{1} \hdots i_{k}$ is a hyperedge of $H \}$.

We study $k$-divisible partition structures, which are families of random set partitions whose block sizes are divisible by an integer $k=1,2,\ldots$. In this setting, exchangeability corresponds to the usual invariance under relabeling by arbitrary permutations; however, for $k>1$, the ordinary deletion maps on partitions no longer preserve divisibility, and so a random deletion procedure is needed to obtain a partition structure. We describe explicit Chinese restaurant-type seating rules for generating families of exchangeable $k$-divisible partitions that are consistent under random deletion. We further introduce the notion of {\em Markovian partition structures}, which are ensembles of exchangeable Markov chains on $k$-divisible partitions that are consistent under a random process of {\em Markovian deletion}. The Markov chains we study are reversible and refine the class of Markov chains introduced in {\em J.\ Appl.\ Probab.}~{\bf48}(3):778--791.
Pattern avoidance in ascent sequences

Ascent sequences are sequences of nonnegative integers with restrictions on the size of each letter, depending on the number of ascents preceding it in the sequence. Ascent sequences have recently been related to (2+2)-free posets and various other combinatorial structures. We study pattern avoidance in ascent sequences, giving several results for patterns of lengths up to 4, for Wilf equivalence and for growth rates. We establish bijective connections between pattern avoiding ascent sequences and various other combinatorial objects, in particular with set partitions. We also make a number of conjectures related to all of these aspects.

Let $\mathcal{B}(n)$ denote the collection of all set partitions of $[n]$. Suppose $\mathcal{A} \subseteq \mathcal{B}(n)$ is a non-trivial $t$-intersecting family of set partitions i.e. any two members of $\A$ have at least $t$ blocks in common, but there is no fixed $t$ blocks of size one which belong to all of them. It is proved that for sufficiently large $n$ depending on $t$, \[ |\mathcal{A}| \le B_{n-t}-\tilde{B}_{n-t}-\tilde{B}_{n-t-1}+t \] where $B_{n}$ is the $n$-th Bell number and $\tilde{B}_{n}$ is the number of set partitions of $[n]$ without blocks of size one. Moreover, equality holds if and only if $\mathcal{A}$ is equivalent to \[ \{P \in \mathcal{B}(n): \{1\}, \{2\},..., \{t\}, \{i\} \in P \textnormal{for some} i \not = 1,2,..., t,n \}\cup \{Q(i,n)\ :\ 1\leq i\leq t\} \] where $Q(i,n)=\{\{i,n\}\}\cup\{\{j\}\ :\ j\in [n]\setminus \{i,n\}\}$. This is an analogue of the Hilton-Milner theorem for set partitions.
Asymptotically normal distribution of some tree families relevant for phylogenetics, and of partitions without singletons
P.L. Erdos and L.A. Szekely [Adv. Appl. Math. 10(1989), 488-496] gave a bijection between rooted semilabeled trees and set partitions. L.H. Harper's results [Ann. Math. Stat. 38(1967), 410-414] on the asymptotic normality of the Stirling numbers of the second kind translates into asymptotic normality of rooted semilabeled trees with given number of vertices, when the number of internal vertices varies. The Erdos-Szekely bijection specializes to a bijection between phylogenetic trees and set partitions with classes of size \geq 2. We consider modified Stirling numbers of the second kind that enumerate partitions of a fixed set into a given number of classes of size \geq 2, and obtain their asymptotic normality as the number of classes varies. The Erdos- Szekely bijection translates this result into the asymptotic normality of the number of phylogenetic trees with given number of vertices, when the number of leaves varies. We also obtain asymptotic normality of the number of phylogenetic trees with given number of leaves and varying number of internal vertices, which make more sense to students of phylogeny. By the Erdos-Szekely bijection this means the asymptotic normality of the number of partitions of n + m elements into m classes of size \geq 2, when n is fixed and m varies. The proofs are adaptations of the techniques of L.H. Harper [ibid.]. We provide asymptotics for the relevant expectations and variances with error term O(1/n).

We describe a generating tree approach to the enumeration and exhaustive generation of k-nonnesting set partitions and permutations. Unlike previous work in the literature using the connections of these objects to Young tableaux and restricted lattice walks, our approach deals directly with partition and permutation diagrams. We provide explicit functional equations for the generating functions, with k as a parameter.

Ehrenborg and Jung recently related the order complex for the lattice of d-divisible partitions with the simplicial complex of pointed ordered set partitions via a homotopy equivalence. The latter has top homology naturally identified as a Specht module. Their work unifies that of Calderbank, Hanlon, Robinson, and Wachs. By focusing on the underlying geometry, we strengthen and extend these results from type A to all real reflection groups and the complex reflection groups known as Shephard groups.
The Limiting Distribution of the Number of Block Pairs in Type B Set Partitions
It is a classical result of Harper that the limiting distribution of the number of blocks in partitions of the set $\{1, 2,..., n\}$ is normal. In this paper, using the saddle point method we prove the normality of the limiting distribution of the number of block pairs in set partitions of type $B_n$. Moreover, we obtain that the limiting distribution of the number of block pairs in $B_n$-partitions without zero-block is also normal.

A labeled set partition is a partition of a set of integers whose arcs are labeled by nonzero elements of an abelian group $A$. Inspired by the action of the linear characters of the unitriangular group on its supercharacters, we define a group action of $A^n$ on the set of $A$-labeled partitions of an $(n+1)$-set. By investigating the orbit decomposition of various families of set partitions under this action, we derive new combinatorial proofs of Coker's identity for the Narayana polynomial and its type B analogue, and establish a number of other related identities. In return, we also prove some enumerative results concerning André and Neto's supercharacter theories of type B and D.

A partition on [n] has an m-nesting if there exists i_1 < i_2 < ... < i_m < j_m < j_{m-1} < ... < j_1, where i_l and j_l are in the same block for all 1 <= l <= m. We use generating trees to construct the class of partitions with no m-nesting and determine functional equations satisfied by the associated generating functions.
We use algebraic kernel method together with a linear operator to describe a coefficient extraction process. This gives rise to enumerative data, and illustrates the increasing complexity of the coefficient formulas as m increases.

In this paper, we study the homology of the cyclic coloring complex of three different types of $k$-uniform hypergraphs. For the case of a complete $k$-uniform hypergraph, we show that the dimension of the $(n-k-1)^{st}$ homology group is given by a binomial coefficient. Further, we discuss a complex whose $r$-faces consist of all ordered set partitions $[B_1, ..., B_{r+2}]$ where none of the $B_i$ contain a hyperedge of the complete $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ and where $1 \in B_1$. It is shown that the dimensions of the homology groups of this complex are given by binomial coefficients. As a consequence, this result gives the dimensions of the multilinear parts of the cyclic homology groups of $\C[x_1,...,x_n]/ \{x_{i_1}...x_{i_k} \mid i_{1}...i_{k}$ is a hyperedge of $H \}$. For the other two types of hypergraphs, star hypergraphs and diagonal hypergraphs, we show that the dimensions of the homology groups of their cyclic coloring complexes are given by binomial coefficients as well.
Avoiding Colored Partitions of Lengths Two and Three
Pattern avoidance in the symmetric group $S_n$ has provided a number of useful connections between seemingly unrelated problems from stack-sorting to Schubert varieties. Recent work has generalized these results to $S_n\wr C_c$, the objects of which can be viewed as "colored permutations".
Another body of research that has grown from the study of pattern avoidance in permutations is pattern avoidance in $Π_n$, the set of set partitions of $[n]$. Pattern avoidance in set partitions is a generalization of the well-studied notion of noncrossing partitions.
Motivated by recent results in pattern avoidance in $S_n \wr C_c$ we provide a catalog of initial results for pattern avoidance in colored partitions, $Π_n \wr C_c$. We note that colored set partitions are not a completely new concept. \emph{Signed} (2-colored) set partitions appear in the work of Björner and Wachs involving the homology of partition lattices. However, we seek to study these objects in a new enumerative context.
Combinatorial Models of Creation-Annihilation

Quantum physics has revealed many interesting formal properties associated with the algebra of two operators, A and B, satisfying the partial commutation relation AB-BA=1. This study surveys the relationships between classical combinatorial structures and the reduction to normal form of operator polynomials in such an algebra. The connection is achieved through suitable labelled graphs, or "diagrams", that are composed of elementary "gates". In this way, many normal form evaluations can be systematically obtained, thanks to models that involve set partitions, permutations, increasing trees, as well as weighted lattice paths. Extensions to q-analogues, multivariate frameworks, and urn models are also briefly discussed.

We obtain the generating functions for partial matchings avoiding neighbor alignments and for partial matchings avoiding neighbor alignments and left nestings. We show that there is a bijection between partial matchings avoiding three neighbor patterns (neighbor alignments, left nestings and right nestings) and set partitions avoiding right nestings via an intermediate structure of integer compositions. Such integer compositions are known to be in one-to-one correspondence with self-modified ascent sequences or $3\bar{1}52\bar{4}$-avoiding permutations, as shown by Bousquet-Mélou, Claesson, Dukes and Kitaev.

Kasraoui, Stanton and Zeng, and Kim, Stanton and Zeng introduced certain $q$-analogues of Laguerre and Charlier polynomials. The moments of these orthogonal polynomials have combinatorial models in terms of crossings in permutations and set partitions. The aim of this article is to prove simple formulas for the moments of the $q$-Laguerre and the $q$-Charlier polynomials, in the style of the Touchard-Riordan formula (which gives the moments of some $q$-Hermite polynomials, and also the distribution of crossings in matchings). Our method mainly consists in the enumeration of weighted Motzkin paths, which are naturally associated with the moments. Some steps are bijective, in particular we describe a decomposition of paths which generalises a previous construction of Penaud for the case of the Touchard-Riordan formula. There are also some non-bijective steps using basic hypergeometric series, and continued fractions or, alternatively, functional equations.

Let $Π_n$ denote the set of all set partitions of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. We consider two subsets of $Π_n$, one connected to rook theory and one associated with symmetric functions in noncommuting variables. Let $\cE_n\sbeΠ_n$ be the subset of all partitions corresponding to an extendable rook (placement) on the upper-triangular board, $\cT_{n-1}$. Given $π\inΠ_m$ and $\si\inΠ_n$, define their {\it slash product\/} to be $π|\si=π\cup(\si+m)\inΠ_{m+n}$ where $\si+m$ is the partition obtained by adding $m$ to every element of every block of $\si$. Call $τ$ {\it atomic\/} if it can not be written as a nontrivial slash product and let $\cA_n\sbeΠ_n$ denote the subset of atomic partitions. Atomic partitions were first defined by Bergeron, Hohlweg, Rosas, and Zabrocki during their study of $NCSym$, the symmetric functions in noncommuting variables. We show that, despite their very different definitions, $\cE_n=\cA_n$ for all $n\ge0$. Furthermore, we put an algebra structure on the formal vector space generated by all rook placements on upper triangular boards which makes it isomorphic to $NCSym$. We end with some remarks and an open problem.

Recently, Deutsch and Elizalde studied the largest and the smallest fixed points of permutations. Motivated by their work, we consider the analogous problems in weighted set partitions. Let $A_{n,k}(\mathbf{t})$ denote the total weight of partitions on $[n+1]$ with the largest singleton $\{k+1\}$. In this paper, explicit formulas for $A_{n,k}(\mathbf{t})$ and many combinatorial identities involving $A_{n,k}(\mathbf{t})$ are obtained by umbral operators and combinatorial methods. As applications, we investigate three special cases such as permutations, involutions and labeled forests. Particularly in the permutation case, we derive a surprising identity analogous to the Riordan identity related to tree enumerations, namely, \begin{eqnarray*} \sum_{k=0}^{n}\binom{n}{k}D_{k+1}(n+1)^{n-k} &=& n^{n+1}, \end{eqnarray*} where $D_{k}$ is the $k$-th derangement number or the number of permutations of $\{1,2,\dots, k\}$ with no fixed points.

Recently, Deutsch and Elizalde studied the largest and the smallest fixed points of permutations. Motivated by their work, we consider the analogous problems in set partitions. Let $A_{n,k}$ denote the number of partitions of $\{1,2,\dots, n+1\}$ with the largest singleton $\{k+1\}$ for $0\leq k\leq n$. In this paper, several explicit formulas for $A_{n,k}$, involving a Dobinski-type analog, are obtained by algebraic and combinatorial methods, many combinatorial identities involving $A_{n,k}$ and Bell numbers are presented by operator methods, and congruence properties of $A_{n,k}$ are also investigated. It will been showed that the sequences $(A_{n+k,k})_{n\geq 0}$ and $(A_{n+k,k})_{k\geq 0}$ (mod $p$) are periodic for any prime $p$, and contain a string of $p-1$ consecutive zeroes. Moreover their minimum periods are conjectured to be $N_p=\frac{p^p-1}{p-1}$ for any prime $p$.
Partition and composition matrices

This paper introduces two matrix analogues for set partitions. A composition matrix on a finite set X is an upper triangular matrix whose entries partition X, and for which there are no rows or columns containing only empty sets. A partition matrix is a composition matrix in which an order is placed on where entries may appear relative to one-another. We show that partition matrices are in one-to-one correspondence with inversion tables. Non-decreasing inversion tables are shown to correspond to partition matrices with a row ordering relation. Partition matrices which are s-diagonal are classified in terms of inversion tables. Bidiagonal partition matrices are enumerated using the transfer-matrix method and are equinumerous with permutations which are sortable by two pop-stacks in parallel. We show that composition matrices on X are in one-to-one correspondence with (2+2)-free posets on X. Also, composition matrices whose rows satisfy a column-ordering relation are shown to be in one-to-one correspondence with parking functions. Finally, we show that pairs of ascent sequences and permutations are in one-to-one correspondence with (2+2)-free posets whose elements are the cycles of a permutation, and use this relation to give an expression for the number of (2+2)-free posets on {1,...,n}.
