Let $U_n$ denote the group of $n\times n$ unipotent upper-triangular matrices over a fixed finite field $\FF_q$, and let $U_\cP$ denote the pattern subgroup of $U_n$ corresponding to the poset $\cP$. This work examines the superclasses and supercharacters, as defined by Diaconis and Isaacs, of the family of normal pattern subgroups of $U_n$. After classifying all such subgroups, we describe an indexing set for their superclasses and supercharacters given by set partitions with some auxiliary data. We go on to establish a canonical bijection between the supercharacters of $U_\cP$ and certain $\FF_q$-labeled subposets of $\cP$. This bijection generalizes the correspondence identified by André and Yan between the supercharacters of $U_n$ and the $\FF_q$-labeled set partitions of $\{1,2,...,n\}$. At present, few explicit descriptions appear in the literature of the superclasses and supercharacters of infinite families of algebra groups other than $\{U_n : n \in \NN\}$. This work signficantly expands the known set of examples in this regard.
Enumeration of connected Catalan objects by type

Noncrossing set partitions, nonnesting set partitions, Dyck paths, and rooted plane trees are four classes of Catalan objects which carry a notion of type. There exists a product formula which enumerates these objects according to type. We define a notion of `connectivity' for these objects and prove an analogous product formula which counts connected objects by type. Our proof of this product formula is combinatorial and bijective. We extend this to a product formula which counts objects with a fixed type and number of connected components. We relate our product formulas to symmetric functions arising from parking functions. We close by presenting an alternative proof of our product formulas communicated to us by Christian Krattenthaler which uses generating functions and Lagrange inversion.

Let $G=(V,E)$ be a simple undirected graph with $n$ vertices then a set partition $π=\{V_1, ..., V_k\}$ of the vertex set of $G$ is a connected set partition if each subgraph $G[V_j]$ induced by the blocks $V_j$ of $π$ is connected for $1\le j\le k$. Define $q_{i}(G)$ as the number of connected set partitions in $G$ with $i$ blocks. The partition polynomial is then $Q(G, x)=\sum_{i=0}^n q_{i}(G)x^i$. This paper presents a splitting approach to the partition polynomial on a separating vertex set $X$ in $G$ and summarizes some properties of the bond lattice. Furthermore the bivariate partition polynomial $Q(G,x,y)=\sum_{i=1}^n \sum_{j=1}^m q_{ij}(G)x^iy^j$ is briefly discussed, where $q_{ij}(G)$ counts the number of connected set partitions with $i$ blocks and $j$ intra block edges. Finally the complexity for the bivariate partition polynomial is proven to be $\sharp P$-hard.

The standard supercharacter theory of the finite unipotent upper-triangular matrices $U_n(q)$ gives rise to a beautiful combinatorics based on set partitions. As with the representation theory of the symmetric group, embeddings of $U_m(q)\subseteq U_n(q)$ for $m\leq n$ lead to branching rules. Diaconis and Isaacs established that the restriction of a supercharacter of $U_n(q)$ is a nonnegative integer linear combination of supercharacters of $U_m(q)$ (in fact, it is polynomial in $q$). In a first step towards understanding the combinatorics of coefficients in the branching rules of the supercharacters of $U_n(q)$, this paper characterizes when a given coefficient is nonzero in the restriction of a supercharacter and the tensor product of two supercharacters. These conditions are given uniformly in terms of complete matchings in bipartite graphs.

We show that the joint distribution of the number of singleton pairs and the number of adjacency pairs is symmetric over the set partitions of type $B_n$ without zero-block, in analogy with the result of Callan for ordinary partitions.

Motivated by Pittel's study of minimally intersecting set partitions, we investigate minimally intersecting set partitions of type B. We find a formula for the number of minimally intersecting r-tuples of $B_n$-partitions, as well as a formula for the number of minimally intersecting r-tuples of $B_n$-partitions without zero-block. As a consequence, it follows the formula of Benoumhani for the Dowling number in analogy to Dobinski's formula.
Ascent sequences and upper triangular matrices containing non-negative integers

This paper presents a bijection between ascent sequences and upper triangular matrices whose non-negative entries are such that all rows and columns contain at least one non-zero entry. We show the equivalence of several natural statistics on these structures under this bijection and prove that some of these statistics are equidistributed. Several special classes of matrices are shown to have simple formulations in terms of ascent sequences. Binary matrices are shown to correspond to ascent sequences with no two adjacent entries the same. Bidiagonal matrices are shown to be related to order-consecutive set partitions and a simple condition on the ascent sequences generate this class.

Let $π$ be a set partition of $[n]=\{1,2,...,n\}$. The standard representation of $π$ is the graph on the vertex set $[n]$ whose edges are the pairs $(i,j)$ of integers with $i<j$ in the same block which does not contain any integer between $i$ and $j$. The front representation of $π$ is the graph on the vertex set $[n]$ whose edges are the pairs $(i,j)$ of integers with $i<j$ in the same block whose smallest integer is $i$. Using the front representation, we find a recurrence relation for the number of $12... k12$-avoiding partitions for $k\geq2$. Similarly, we find a recurrence relation for the number of $k$-distant noncrossing partitions for $k=2,3$. We also prove that the front representation has several joint symmetric distributions for crossings and nestings as the standard representation does.
Crossings and nestings in set partitions of classical types

In this article, we investigate bijections on various classes of set partitions of classical types that preserve openers and closers. On the one hand we present bijections that interchange crossings and nestings. For types B and C, they generalize a construction by Kasraoui and Zeng for type A, whereas for type D, we were only able to construct a bijection between non-crossing and non-nesting set partitions. On the other hand we generalize a bijection to type B and C that interchanges the cardinality of the maximal crossing with the cardinality of the maximal nesting, as given by Chen, Deng, Du, Stanley and Yan for type A. Using a variant of this bijection, we also settle a conjecture by Soll and Welker concerning generalized type B triangulations and symmetric fans of Dyck paths.

In a recent paper, Goyt and Sagan studied distributions of certain set partition statistics over pattern restricted sets of set partitions that were counted by the Fibonacci numbers. Their study produced a class of $q$-Fibonacci numbers, which they related to $q$-Fibonacci numbers studied by Carlitz and Cigler. In this paper we will study the distributions of some Mahonian statistics over pattern restricted sets of permutations. We will give bijective proofs connecting some of our $q$-Fibonacci numbers to those of Carlitz, Cigler, Goyt and Sagan. We encode these permutations as words and use a weight to produce bijective proofs of $q$-Fibonacci identities. Finally, we study the distribution of some of these statistics on pattern restricted permutations that West showed were counted by even Fibonacci numbers.
Major Index for 01-Fillings of Moon Polyominoes

We propose a major index statistic on 01-fillings of moon polyominoes which, when specialized to certain shapes, reduces to the major index for permutations and set partitions. We consider the set F(M, s; A) of all 01-fillings of a moon polyomino M with given column sum s whose empty rows are A, and prove that this major index has the same distribution as the number of north-east chains, which are the natural extension of inversions (resp. crossings) for permutations (resp. set partitions). Hence our result generalizes the classical equidistribution results for the permutation statistics inv and maj. Two proofs are presented. The first is an algebraic one using generating functions, and the second is a bijection on 01-fillings of moon polyominoes in the spirit of Foata's second fundamental transformation on words and permutations.
The Logic of Partitions: Introduction to the Dual of the Logic of Subsets

Modern categorical logic as well as the Kripke and topological models of intuitionistic logic suggest that the interpretation of ordinary "propositional" logic should in general be the logic of subsets of a given universe set. Partitions on a set are dual to subsets of a set in the sense of the category-theoretic duality of epimorphisms and monomorphisms--which is reflected in the duality between quotient objects and subobjects throughout algebra. If "propositional" logic is thus seen as the logic of subsets of a universe set, then the question naturally arises of a dual logic of partitions on a universe set. This paper is an introduction to that logic of partitions dual to classical subset logic. The paper goes from basic concepts up through the correctness and completeness theorems for a tableau system of partition logic.

We define and consider k-distant crossings and nestings for matchings and set partitions, which are a variation of crossings and nestings in which the distance between vertices is important. By modifying an involution of Kasraoui and Zeng (Electronic J. Combinatorics 2006, research paper 33), we show that the joint distribution of k-distant crossings and nestings is symmetric. We also study the numbers of k-distant noncrossing matchings and partitions for small k, which are counted by well-known sequences, as well as the orthogonal polynomials related to k-distant noncrossing matchings and partitions. We extend Chen et al.'s r-crossings and enhanced r-crossings.

A set partition is said to be $(k,d)$-noncrossing if it avoids the pattern $12... k12... d$. We find an explicit formula for the ordinary generating function of the number of $(k,d)$-noncrossing partitions of $\{1,2,...,n\}$ when $d=1,2$.

$q$-Partition Algebra Combinatorics

We compute the dimension $d_{n,r}(q) = \dim(\IR_q^r)$ of the defining module $\IR_q^r$ for the $q$-partition algebra. This module comes from $r$-iterations of Harish-Chandra restriction and induction on $\GL_n(\FF_q)$. This dimension is a polynomial in $q$ that specializes as $d_{n,r}(1) = n^r$ and $d_{n,r}(0) = B(r)$, the $r$th Bell number. We compute $d_{n,r}(q)$ in two ways. The first is purely combinatorial. We show that $d_{n,r}(q) = \sum_λf^λ(q) m_r^λ$, where $f^λ(q)$ is the $q$-hook number and $m_r^λ$ is the number of $r$-vacillating tableaux. Using a Schensted bijection, we write this as a sum over integer sequences which, when $q$-counted by inverse major index, gives $d_{n,r}(q)$. The second way is algebraic. We find a basis of $\IR_q^r$ that is indexed by $n$-restricted $q$-set partitions of $\{1,..., r\}$, and we show that there are $d_{n,r}(q)$ of these.
Avoidance of Partially Ordered Generalized Patterns of the form $k$-$σ$-$k$
Sergey Kitaev has shown that the exponential generating function for permutations avoiding the generalized pattern $σ$-$k$, where $σ$ is a pattern without dashes and $k$ is one greater than the biggest element in $σ$, is determined by the exponential generating function for permutations avoiding $σ$.
We show that this also holds for permutations avoiding all the generalized patterns $σ_1$-$k_1$, $...$, $σ_n$-$k_n$, where $σ_1$, $...$, $σ_n$ are patterns without dashes and $k_i$ is one greater than the biggest element in $σ_i$. Similarly the exponential generating function for permutations avoiding the partially ordered generalized patterns $k_1$-$σ_1$-$k_1$, $...$, $k_n$-$σ_n$-$k_n$ can be determined from the exponential generating function for permutations avoiding the generalized patterns $σ_1$, $...$, $σ_n$, where $σ_1$, $...$, $σ_n$ are patterns without dashes and $k_i$ is one greater than the largest element in $σ_i$.
Using this we construct a bijection between bicolored set partitions and permutations avoiding the partially ordered generalized pattern 3-12-3 (that is, permutations avoiding both the patterns 3-12-4 and 4-12-3). By using this method twice, we find a closed formula for the exponential generating function for permutations avoiding the partially ordered generalized pattern 3-121-3.
Finally, we give a complete classification of when single partially ordered generalized patterns have the same set of avoiders.
Factors in random graphs

Let $H$ be a fixed graph on $v$ vertices. For an $n$-vertex graph $G$ with $n$ divisible by $v$, an $H$-{\em factor} of $G$ is a collection of $n/v$ copies of $H$ whose vertex sets partition $V(G)$.
In this paper we consider the threshold $th_{H} (n)$ of the property that an Erdős-Rényi random graph (on $n$ points) contains an $H$-factor. Our results determine $th_{H} (n)$ for all strictly balanced $H$.
The method here extends with no difficulty to hypergraphs. As a corollary, we obtain the threshold for a perfect matching in random $k$-uniform hypergraph, solving the well-known "Shamir's problem."
Pattern avoidance in "flattened" partitions

To flatten a set partition (with apologies to Mathematica) means to form a permutation by erasing the dividers between its blocks. Of course, the result depends on how the blocks are listed. For the usual listing--increasing entries in each block and blocks arranged in increasing order of their first entries--we count the partitions of [n] whose flattening avoids a single 3-letter pattern. Five counting sequences arise: a null sequence, the powers of 2, the Fibonacci numbers, the Catalan numbers, and the binomial transform of the Catalan numbers.
