Posets, parking functions and the regions of the Shi arrangement revisited
The number of regions of the type A_{n-1} Shi arrangement in R^n is counted by the intrinsically beautiful formula (n+1)^{n-1}. First proved by Shi, this result motivated Pak and Stanley as well as Athanasiadis and Linusson to provide bijective proofs. We give a description of the Athanasiadis-Linusson bijection and generalize it to a bijection between the regions of the type C_n Shi arrangement in R^n and sequences a_1a_2...a_n, where a_i \in \{-n, -n+1,..., -1, 0, 1,..., n-1, n\}, i \in [n]. Our bijections naturally restrict to bijections between regions of the arrangements with a certain number of ceilings (or floors) and sequences with a given number of distinct elements. A special family of posets, whose antichains encode the regions of the arrangements, play a central role in our approach.

The Shi arrangements and the Bernoulli polynomials
Published in Bulletin of London Mathematics Society, 44 (2012), 563-570 • View PublicationBIB
The braid arrangement is the Coxeter arrangement of the type $A_\ell$. The Shi arrangement is an affine arrangement of hyperplanes consisting of the hyperplanes of the braid arrangement and their parallel translations. In this paper, we give an explicit basis construction for the derivation module of the cone over the Shi arrangement. The essential ingredient of our recipe is the Bernoulli polynomials.

Two rainbow connection numbers and the parameter $σ_k(G)$
Published • View PublicationBIB
The rainbow connection number $rc(G)$ and the rainbow vertex-connection number $rvc(G)$ of a graph $G$ were introduced by Chartrand et al. and Krivelevich and Yuster, respectively. Good upper bounds in terms of minimum degree $δ$ were reported by Chandran et al., Krivelevich and Yuster, and Li and Shi. However, if a graph has a small minimum degree $δ$ and a large number of vertices $n$, these upper bounds are very large, linear in $n$. Hence, one may think to look for a good parameter to replace $δ$ and decrease the upper bounds significantly. Such a natural parameter is $σ_k$. In this paper, for the rainbow connection number we prove that if $G$ is a connected graph of order $n$ with $k$ independent vertices, then $rc(G)\leq 3k\frac{n-2}{σ_k+k}+6k-4$. For the rainbow vertex-connection number, we prove that $rvc(G)\leq \frac{(4k+2k^{2})n}{σ_k+k}+5k $ if $σ_k\leq 7k$ and $σ_k\geq 8k$, and $rvc(G)\leq \frac{(\frac{38k}{9}+2k^{2})n}{σ_k+k}+5k$ if $7k<σ_k< 8k$. Examples are given showing that our bounds are much better than the existing ones, i.e., for the examples $δ$ is very small but $σ_k$ is very large, and the bounds are $rc(G)< 9k-3$ and $rvc(G)\leq 9k+2k^{2}$ or $rvc(G)\leq\frac{83k}{9}+2k^{2}$, which imply that both $rc(G)$ and $rvc(G)$ can be upper bounded by constants from our upper bounds, but linear in $n$ from the existing ones.

The Shi arrangement and the Ish arrangement
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper is about two arrangements of hyperplanes. The first --- the Shi arrangement --- was introduced by Jian-Yi Shi to describe the Kazhdan-Lusztig cells in the affine Weyl group of type $A$. The second --- the Ish arrangement --- was recently defined by the first author who used the two arrangements together to give a new interpretation of the $q,t$-Catalan numbers of Garsia and Haiman. In the present paper we will define a mysterious "combinatorial symmetry" between the two arrangements and show that this symmetry preserves a great deal of information. For example, the Shi and Ish arrangements share the same characteristic polynomial, the same numbers of regions, bounded regions, dominant regions, regions with $c$ "ceilings" and $d$ "degrees of freedom", etc. Moreover, all of these results hold in the greater generality of "deleted" Shi and Ish arrangements corresponding to an arbitrary subgraph of the complete graph. Our proofs are based on nice combinatorial labelings of Shi and Ish regions and a new set partition-valued statistic on these regions.

Hyperplane Arrangements and Diagonal Harmonics
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 2003, Haglund's {\sf bounce} statistic gave the first combinatorial interpretation of the $q,t$-Catalan numbers and the Hilbert series of diagonal harmonics. In this paper we propose a new combinatorial interpretation in terms of the affine Weyl group of type $A$. In particular, we define two statistics on affine permutations; one in terms of the Shi hyperplane arrangement, and one in terms of a new arrangement - which we call the Ish arrangement. We prove that our statistics are equivalent to the {\sf area'} and {\sf bounce} statistics of Haglund and Loehr. In this setting, we observe that {\sf bounce} is naturally expressed as a statistic on the root lattice. We extend our statistics in two directions: to "extended" Shi arrangements and to the bounded chambers of these arrangements. This leads to a (conjectural) combinatorial interpretation for all integral powers of the Bergeron-Garsia nabla operator applied to the elementary symmetric functions.
An elementary chromatic reduction for gain graphs and special hyperplane arrangements
Published in Electronic J. Combinatorics, 16 (1) (2009), Article R121 • Search Publication
A gain graph is a graph whose edges are labelled invertibly by "gains" from a group. "Switching" is a transformation of gain graphs that generalizes conjugation in a group. A "weak chromatic function" of gain graphs with gains in a fixed group satisfies three laws: deletion-contraction for links with neutral gain, invariance under switching, and nullity on graphs with a neutral loop. The laws lead to the "weak chromatic group" of gain graphs, which is the universal domain for weak chromatic functions. We find expressions, valid in that group, for a gain graph in terms of minors without neutral-gain edges, or with added complete neutral-gain subgraphs, that generalize the expression of an ordinary chromatic polynomial in terms of monomials or falling factorials. These expressions imply relations for chromatic functions of gain graphs. We apply our relations to some special integral gain graphs including those that correspond to the Shi, Linial, and Catalan arrangements, thereby obtaining new evaluations of and new ways to calculate the zero-free chromatic polynomial and the integral and modular chromatic functions of these gain graphs, hence the characteristic polynomials and hypercubical lattice-point counting functions of the arrangements. We also calculate the total chromatic polynomial of any gain graph and especially of the Catalan, Shi, and Linial gain graphs.

Cyclage, catabolism, and the affine Hecke algebra
Published • View PublicationBIB
We identify a subalgebra \pH_n of the extended affine Hecke algebra \eH_n of type A. The subalgebra \pH_n is a \u-analogue of the monoid algebra of §_n \ltimes \ZZ_{\geq 0}^n and inherits a canonical basis from that of \eH_n. We show that its left cells are naturally labeled by tableaux filled with positive integer entries having distinct residues mod n, which we term \emph{positive affine tableaux} (PAT). We then exhibit a cellular subquotient \R_{1^n} of \pH_n that is a \u-analogue of the ring of coinvariants \CC[y_1,...,y_n]/(e_1,...,e_n) with left cells labeled by PAT that are essentially standard Young tableaux with cocharge labels. Multiplying canonical basis elements by a certain element π\in \pH_n corresponds to rotations of words, and on cells corresponds to cocyclage. We further show that \R_{1^n} has cellular quotients \R_λthat are \u-analogues of the Garsia-Procesi modules R_λwith left cells labeled by (a PAT version of) the λ-catabolizable tableaux. We give a conjectural description of a cellular filtration of \pH_n, the subquotients of which are isomorphic to dual versions of \R_λunder the perfect pairing on \R_{1^n}. We conjecture how this filtration relates to the combinatorics of the cells of \eH_n worked out by Shi, Lusztig, and Xi. We also conjecture that the k-atoms of Lascoux, Lapointe, and Morse and the R-catabolizable tableaux of Shimozono and Weyman have cellular counterparts in \pH_n. We extend the idea of atom copies of Lascoux, Lapoint, and Morse to positive affine tableaux and give descriptions, mostly conjectural, of some of these copies in terms of catabolizability.

Homomorphism and embedding universal structures for restricted classes
This paper unifies problems and results related to (embedding) universal and homomorphism universal structures. On the one side we give a new combinatorial proof of the existence of universal objects for homomorphism defined classes of structures (thus reproving a result of Cherlin, Shelah and Shi) and on the other side this leads to the new proof of the existence of dual objects (established by Nešetřil and Tardif). Our explicite approach has further applications to special structures such as variants of the rational Urysohn space. We also solve a related extremal problem which shows the optimality (of the used lifted arities) of our construction (and a related problem of A. Atserias).

A bijection between dominant Shi regions and core partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is well-known that Catalan numbers $C_n = \frac{1}{n+1} \binom{2n}{n}$ count the number of dominant regions in the Shi arrangement of type $A$, and that they also count partitions which are both $n$-cores as well as $(n+1)$-cores. These concepts have natural extensions, which we call here the $m$-Catalan numbers and $m$-Shi arrangement. In this paper, we construct a bijection between dominant regions of the $m$-Shi arrangement and partitions which are both $n$-cores as well as $(mn+1)$-cores. The bijection is natural in the sense that it commutes with the action of the affine symmetric group.
On The Isoperimetric Spectrum of Graphs and Its Approximations
Published in J. Combinatorial Theory, Series B, 2010 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we consider higher isoperimetric numbers of a (finite directed) graph. In this regard we focus on the $n$th mean isoperimetric constant of a directed graph as the minimum of the mean outgoing normalized flows from a given set of $n$ disjoint subsets of the vertex set of the graph. We show that the second mean isoperimetric constant in this general setting, coincides with (the mean version of) the classical Cheeger constant of the graph, while for the rest of the spectrum we show that there is a fundamental difference between the $n$th isoperimetric constant and the number obtained by taking the minimum over all $n$-partitions. In this direction, we show that our definition is the correct one in the sense that it satisfies a Federer-Fleming-type theorem, and we also define and present examples for the concept of a supergeometric graph as a graph whose mean isoperimetric constants are attained on partitions at all levels. Moreover, considering the ${\bf NP}$-completeness of the isoperimetric problem on graphs, we address ourselves to the approximation problem where we prove general spectral inequalities that give rise to a general Cheeger-type inequality as well. On the other hand, we also consider some algorithmic aspects of the problem where we show connections to orthogonal representations of graphs and following J.~Malik and J.~Shi ($2000$) we study the close relationships to the well-known $k$-means algorithm and normalized cuts method.

On the extendability of free multiarrangements
Published • View PublicationBIB
A free multiarrangement of rank $k$ is defined to be extendable if it is obtained from a simple rank $(k+1)$ free arrangement by the natural restriction to a hyperplane (in the sense of Ziegler). Not all free multiarrangements are extendable. We will discuss extendability of free multiarrangements for a special class. We also give two applications. The first is to produce totally non-free arrangements. The second is to give interpolating free arrangements between extended Shi and Catalan arrangements.

Interpreting the two variable Distance enumerator of the Shi hyperplane arrangement
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give an interpretation of the coefficients of the two variable refinement $D_{\Sh_n}(q,t)$ of the distance enumerator of the Shi hyperplane arrangement $\Sh_n$ in $n$ dimensions. This two variable refinement was defined by Stanley \cite{stan-rota} for the general $r$-extended Shi hyperplane arrangements. We give an interpretation when $r=1$. We define three natural three-dimensional partitions of the number $(n+1)^{n-1}$. The first arises from parking functions of length $n$, the second from special posets on $n$ vertices defined by Athanasiadis and the third from spanning trees on $n+1$ vertices. We call the three partitions as the parking partition, the tree-poset partition and the spanning-tree partition respectively. We show that one of the parts of the parking partition is identical to the number of edge-labelled trees with label set $\{1,2,...,n\}$ on $n+1$ unlabelled vertices. We prove that the parking partition majorises the tree-poset partition and conjecture that the spanning-tree partition also majorises the tree-poset partition.

Lattice point counts for the Shi arrangement and other affinographic hyperplane arrangements
Published in J. Combinatorial Theory Ser. A, 114 (2007), no. 1, 97-109. • View PublicationBIB
Hyperplanes of the form x_j = x_i + c are called affinographic. For an affinographic hyperplane arrangement in R^n, such as the Shi arrangement, we study the function f(M) that counts integral points in [1,M]^n that do not lie in any hyperplane of the arrangement. We show that f(M) is a piecewise polynomial function of positive integers M, composed of terms that appear gradually as M increases. Our approach is to convert the problem to one of counting integral proper colorations of a rooted integral gain graph. An application is to interval coloring in which the interval of available colors for vertex v_i has the form [(h_i)+1,M]. A related problem takes colors modulo M; the number of proper modular colorations is a different piecewise polynomial that for large M becomes the characteristic polynomial of the arrangement (by which means Athanasiadis previously obtained that polynomial). We also study this function for all positive moduli.

Spanning trees in complete uniform hypergraphs and a connection to extended r-Shi hyperplane arrangements
We give a Cayley type formula to count the number of spanning trees in the complete r-uniform hypergraph for all r >= 3. Similar to the bijection between spanning trees in complete graphs and Parking functions, we derive a bijection from spanning trees of the complete (r+1)-uniform hypergraph which arise from a fixed r-perfect matching and r-Parking functions. We observe a simple consequence of this bijection in terms of the number of regions of the extended Shi arrangement.

Hopf algebras and dendriform structures arising from parking functions
Published in Fundamenta Mathematicae 193 (2007), 189-241 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a graded Hopf algebra based on the set of parking functions (hence of dimension (n+1)^{n-1} in degree n). This algebra can be embedded into a noncommutative polynomial algebra in infinitely many variables. We determine its structure, and show that it admits natural quotients and subalgebras whose graded components have dimensions respectively given by the Schroder numbers (plane trees), the Catalan numbers, and powers of 3. These smaller algebras are always bialgebras and belong to some family of di- or tri-algebras occuring in the works of Loday and Ronco. Moreover, the fundamental notion of parkization allows one to endow the set of parking functions of fixed length with an associative multiplication (different from the one coming from the Shi arrangement), leading to a generalization of the internal product of symmetric functions. Several of the intermediate algebras are stable under this operation. Among them, one finds the Solomon descent algebra but also a new algebra based on a Catalan set, admitting the Solomon algebra as a left ideal.

Normalizers of ad-nilpotent ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\be$ be a Borel subalgebra of a complex simple Lie algebra $\g$. An ideal of $\be$ is called ad-nilpotent, if it is contained in $[\be,\be]$. We give several descriptions of the normalizer of an ad-nilpotent ideal: using the weight of an ideal, or the affine Weyl group, or a relationship with dominant regions of the Shi arrangement. We also give a description of those ideals whose normalizer is equal to $\be$. For sl(n) and sp(2n), explicit enumerative results are obtained, which demonstrate a connection with some famous integer sequences.

Ideals of Heisenberg type and minimax elements of affine Weyl groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider ad-nilpotent ideals of a Borel subalgebra of a simple Lie algebra. The goal of this paper is two-fold. First, we study the ad-nilpotent ideals lying inside the Heisenberg ideal. The Heisenberg ideal is the nilpotent radical of the centralizer of the highest root vector. Second, we study the ideals having the property that the corresponding domain of the Shi arrangement consists of a single alcove. Such ideals (and the corresponding elements of the affine Weyl group) are called minimax.

On 321-avoiding permutations in affine Weyl groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the notion of 321-avoiding permutations in the affine Weyl group $W$ of type $A_{n-1}$ by considering the group as a George group (in the sense of Eriksson and Eriksson). This enables us to generalize a result of Billey, Jockusch and Stanley to show that the 321-avoiding permutations in $W$ coincide with the set of fully commutative elements; in other words, any two reduced expressions for a 321-avoiding element of $W$ (considered as a Coxeter group) may be obtained from each other by repeated applications of short braid relations. Using Shi's characterization of the Kazhdan--Lusztig cells in the group $W$, we use our main result to show that the fully commutative elements of $W$ form a union of Kazhdan--Lusztig cells. This phenomenon has been studied by the author and J. Losonczy for finite Coxeter groups, and is interesting partly because it allows certain structure constants for the Kazhdan--Lusztig basis of the associated Hecke algebra to be computed combinatorially. We also show how some of our results can be generalized to a larger group of permutations, the extended affine Weyl group associated to $GL_n({\Bbb C})$.
