Rational Shi tableaux and the skew length statistic

We define two refinements of the skew length statistic on simultaneous core partitions. The first one relies on hook lengths and is used to prove a refined version of the theorem stating that the skew length is invariant under conjugation of the core. The second one is equivalent to a generalisation of Shi tableaux to the rational level of Catalan combinatorics. These rational Shi tableaux encode dominant $p$-stable elements in the affine symmetric group. We prove that the rational Shi tableau is injective, that is, each dominant $p$-stable affine permutation is determined uniquely by its Shi tableau. Moreover, we provide a uniform generalisation of rational Shi tableaux to Weyl groups, and conjecture injectivity in the general case.

In his study of Kazhdan-Lusztig cells in affine type $A$, Shi has introduced an affine analog of Robinson-Schensted correspondence. We generalize the Matrix-Ball Construction of Viennot and Fulton to give a more combinatorial realization of Shi's algorithm. As a biproduct, we also give a way to realize the affine correspondence via the usual Robinson-Schensted bumping algorithm. Next, inspired by Lusztig and Xi, we extend the algorithm to a bijection between extended affine symmetric group and triples $(P, Q, ρ)$ where $P$ and $Q$ are tabloids and $ρ$ is a dominant weight. The weights $ρ$ get a natural interpretation in terms of the Affine Matrix-Ball Construction. Finally, we prove that fibers of the inverse map possess a Weyl group symmetry, explaining the dominance condition on weights.
On Orbits of Order Ideals of Minuscule Posets II: Homomesy
The Fon-Der-Flaass action partitions the order ideals of a poset into disjoint orbits. For a product of two chains, Propp and Roby observed --- across orbits --- the mean cardinality of the order ideals within an orbit to be invariant. That this phenomenon, which they christened homomesy, extends to all minuscule posets is shown herein.
Given a minuscule poset $P$, there exists a complex simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ and a representation $V$ of $\mathfrak{g}$ such that the lattice of order ideals of $P$ coincides with the weight lattice of $V$. For a weight $μ$ with corresponding order ideal $I$, it is demonstrated that the behavior of the Weyl group simple reflections on $μ$ not only uniquely determines $μ$, but also encodes the cardinality of $I$. After recourse to work of Rush and Shi mapping the anatomy of the lattice isomorphism, the upshot is a uniform proof that the cardinality statistic exhibits homomesy.
A further application of these ideas shows that the statistic tracking the number of maximal elements in an order ideal is also homomesic, extending another result of Propp and Roby.

We introduce a partition of (coweight) lattice points inside the dilated fundamental parallelepiped into those of partially closed simplices. This partition can be considered as a generalization and a lattice points interpretation of the classical formula of Worpitzky.
This partition, and the generalized Eulerian polynomial, recently introduced by Lam and Postnikov, can be used to describe the characteristic (quasi)polynomials of Shi and Linial arrangements. As an application, we prove that the characteristic quasi-polynomial of the Shi arrangement turns out to be a polynomial. We also present several results on the location of zeros of characteristic polynomials, related to a conjecture of Postnikov and Stanley. In particular, we verify the "functional equation" of the characteristic polynomial of the Linial arrangement for any root system, and give partial affirmative results on "Riemann hypothesis" for the root systems of type $E_6, E_7, E_8$, and $F_4$.
Note on the bijectivity of the Pak-Stanley labelling
This article has the sole purpose of presenting a simple, self-contained and direct proof of the fact that the Pak-Stanley labeling is a bijection. The construction behind the proof is subsumed in a forthcoming paper [R. Duarte and A. Guedes de Oliveira, The braid and the Shi arrangements and the Pak-Stanley labeling, Eur. J. Combinatorics, in press.], but an actual self-contained proof is not explicitly included in that paper.

We introduce type C parking functions, encoded as vertically labelled lattice paths and endowed with a statistic dinv'. We define a bijection from type C parking functions to regions of the Shi arrangement of type C, encoded as diagonally labelled ballot paths and endowed with a natural statistic area'. This bijection is a natural analogue of the zeta map of Haglund and Loehr and maps dinv' to area'. We give three different descriptions of it.

The Ish arrangement was introduced by Armstrong to give a new interpretation of the $q,t$-Catalan numbers of Garsia and Haiman. Armstrong and Rhoades showed that there are some striking similarities between the Shi arrangement and the Ish arrangement and posed some problems. One of them is whether the Ish arrangement is a free arrangement or not. In this paper, we verify that the Ish arrangement is supersolvable and hence free. Moreover, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the deleted Ish arrangement to be free.

The \emph{Shi arrangement} is the set of all hyperplanes in $\mathbb R^n$ of the form $x_j - x_k = 0$ or $1$ for $1 \le j < k \le n$. Shi observed in 1986 that the number of regions (i.e., connected components of the complement) of this arrangement is $(n+1)^{n-1}$. An unrelated combinatorial concept is that of a \emph{parking function}, i.e., a sequence $(x_1, x_2, ..., x_n)$ of positive integers that, when rearranged from smallest to largest, satisfies $x_k \le k$. (There is an illustrative reason for the term \emph{parking function}.) It turns out that the number of parking functions of length $n$ also equals $(n+1)^{n-1}$, a result due to Konheim and Weiss from 1966. A natural problem consists of finding a bijection between the $n$-dimensional Shi arragnement and the parking functions of length $n$. Stanley and Pak (1996) and Athanasiadis and Linusson 1999) gave such (quite different) bijections. We will shed new light on the former bijection by taking a scenic route through certain mixed graphs.

We show new bijective proofs of previously known formulas for the number of regions of some deformations of the braid arrangement, by means of a bijection between the no-broken-circuit sets of the corresponding integral gain graphs and some kinds of labelled binary trees. This leads to new bijective proofs for the Shi, Catalan, and similar hyperplane arrangements.

In [9], Terao proved the freeness of multi-Coxeter arrangements with constant multiplicities by giving an explicit construction of bases. Combining it with algebro-geometric method, Yoshinaga proved the freeness of the extended Catalan and Shi arrangements in [11]. However, there have been no explicit constructions of the bases for the logarithmic derivation modules of the extended Catalan and Shi arrangements. In this paper, we give the first explicit construction of them when the root system is of the type $A_2$.

The {\sf Shi hyperplane arrangement} Shi(n) was introduced by Shi to study the Kazhdan-Lusztig cellular structure of the affine symmetric group. The {\sf Ish hyperplane arrangement} Ish(n) was introduced by Armstrong in the study of diagonal harmonics. Armstrong and Rhoades discovered a deep combinatorial similarity between the Shi and Ish arrangements. We solve a collection of problems posed by Armstrong and Armstrong-Rhoades by giving bijections between regions of Shi(n) and Ish(n) which preserve certain statistics. Our bijections generalize to the `deleted arrangements' Shi(G) and Ish(G) which depend on a subgraph G of the complete graph K_n on n vertices. The key tools in our bijections are the introduction of an Ish analog of parking functions called {\sf rook words} and a new instance of the cycle lemma of enumerative combinatorics.

Let claw be the graph $K_{1,3}$. A graph $G$ on $n\geq 3$ vertices is called \emph{o}-heavy if each induced claw of $G$ has a pair of end-vertices with degree sum at least $n$, and 1-heavy if at least one end-vertex of each induced claw of $G$ has degree at least $n/2$. In this note, we show that every 2-connected $o$-heavy or 3-connected 1-heavy graph is Hamiltonian if we restrict Fan-type degree condition or neighborhood intersection condition to certain pairs of vertices in some small induced subgraphs of the graph. Our results improve or extend previous results of Broersma et al., Chen et al., Fan, Goodman & Hedetniemi, Gould & Jacobson, and Shi on the existence of Hamilton cycles in graphs.

We define the bigraphical arrangement of a graph and show that the Pak-Stanley labels of its regions are the parking functions of a closely related graph, thus proving conjectures of Duval, Klivans, and Martin and of Hopkins and Perkinson. A consequence is a new proof of a bijection between labeled graphs and regions of the Shi arrangement first given by Stanley. We also give bounds on the number of regions of a bigraphical arrangement.
Two sufficient conditions for the existence of Hamilton cycles in graphs
Let $G$ be a graph on $n\geq 3$ vertices, claw the bipartite graph $K_{1,3}$, and $Z_i$ the graph obtained from a triangle by attaching a path of length $i$ to its one vertex. $G$ is called 1-heavy if at least one end vertex of each induced claw of $G$ has degree at least $n/2$, and claw-\emph{o}-heavy if each induced claw of it has a pair of end vertices with degree sum at least $n$. In this paper we prove two results: (1) Every 2-connected claw-$o$-heavy graph $G$ is Hamiltonian if every pair of vertices $u,v$ in a subgraph $H\cong Z_1$ contained in an induced subgraph $Z_2$ of $G$ with $d_{H}(u,v)=2$ satisfies one of the following conditions: ($a$) $|N(u)\cap N(v)|\geq 2$; ($b$) $\max(d(u),d(v))\geq n/2$. (2) Every 3-connected 1-heavy graph $G$ is Hamiltonian if every pair of vertices $u,v$ in an induced subgraph $H\cong Z_2$ of $G$ with $d_{H}(u,v)=2$ satisfies one of the following conditions: ($a$) $|N(u)\cap N(v)|\geq 2$; ($b$) $\max(d(u),d(v))\geq n/2$. Our results improve or extend previous theorems of Broersma et al., Chen et al., Fan, Goodman & Hedetniemi, Gould & Jacobson and Shi on the existence of Hamilton cycles in graphs.

We extend the Shi bijection from the Borel subalgebra case to parabolic subalgebras. In the process, the $I$-deleted Shi arrangement $\texttt{Shi}(I)$ naturally emerges. This arrangement interpolates between the Coxeter arrangement $\texttt{Cox}$ and the Shi arrangement $\texttt{Shi}$, and breaks the symmetry of $\texttt{Shi}$ in a certain symmetrical way. Among other things, we determine the characteristic polynomial $χ(\texttt{Shi}(I), t)$ of $\texttt{Shi}(I)$ explicitly for $A_{n-1}$ and $C_n$. More generally, let $\texttt{Shi}(G)$ be an arbitrary arrangement between $\texttt{Cox}$ and $\texttt{Shi}$. Armstrong and Rhoades recently gave a formula for $χ(\texttt{Shi}(G), t)$ for $A_{n-1}$. Inspired by their result, we obtain formulae for $χ(\texttt{Shi}(G), t)$ for $B_n$, $C_n$ and $D_n$.

The Shi arrangement is an affine arrangement of hyperplanes consisting of the hyperplanes of the Weyl arrangement and their parallel translations. It was introduced by J.-Y. Shi in the study of the Kazhdan-Lusztig representation of the affine Weyl groups. M. Yoshinaga showed that the cone over every Shi arrangement is free. In this paper, we construct an explicit basis for the derivation module of the cone over the Shi arrangements of the type $B_{\ell}$ or $C_{\ell}$.

Athanasiadis introduced separating walls for a region in the extended Shi arrangement and used them to generalize the Narayana numbers. In this paper, we fix a hyperplane in the extended Shi arrangement for type A and calculate the number of dominant regions which have the fixed hyperplane as a separating wall; that is, regions where the hyperplane supports a facet of the region and separates the region from the origin.

In his affirmative answer to the Edelman-Reiner conjecture, Yoshinaga proved that the logarithmic derivation modules of the cones of the extended Shi arrangements are free modules. However, all we know about the bases is their existence and degrees. In this article, we introduce two distinguished bases for the modules. More specifically, we will define and study the simple-root basis plus (SRB+) and the simple-root basis minus (SRB-) when a primitive derivation is fixed. They have remarkable properties relevant to the simple roots and those properties characterize the bases.
