Cylindric rhombic tableaux and the two-species ASEP on a ring
Published • View PublicationBIB
The asymmetric simple exclusion exclusion process (ASEP) is a model of particles hopping on a one-dimensional lattice of n sites. It was introduced around 1970, and since then has been extensively studied by researchers in statistical mechanics, probability, and combinatorics. Recently the ASEP on a lattice with open boundaries has been linked to Koornwinder polynomials, and the ASEP on a ring has been linked to Macdonald polynomials. In this article we study the two-species asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on a ring, in which two kinds of particles ("heavy" and "light"), as well as "holes," can hop both clockwise and counterclockwise (at rates 1 or t depending on the particle types) on a ring of n sites. We introduce some new tableaux on a cylinder called cylindric rhombic tableaux (CRT), and use them to give a formula for the stationary distribution of the two-species ASEP -- each probability is expressed as a sum over all CRT of a fixed type. When lambda is a partition in {0,1,2}^n, we then give a formula for the nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomial E_{lambda} and the symmetric Macdonald polynomial P_{lambda} by refining our tableaux formulas for the stationary distribution.

Generalizations of TASEP in discrete and continuous inhomogeneous space
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate a rich new class of exactly solvable particle systems generalizing the Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (TASEP). Our particle systems can be thought of as new exactly solvable examples of tandem queues, directed first- or last-passage percolation models, or Robinson-Schensted-Knuth type systems with random input. One of the novel features of the particle systems is the presence of spatial inhomogeneity which can lead to the formation of traffic jams. For systems with special step-like initial data, we find explicit limit shapes, describe hydrodynamic evolution, and obtain asymptotic fluctuation results which put the systems into the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class. At a critical scaling around a traffic jam in the continuous space TASEP, we observe deformations of the Tracy-Widom distribution and the extended Airy kernel, revealing the finer structure of this novel type of phase transitions. A homogeneous version of a discrete space system we consider is a one-parameter deformation of the geometric last-passage percolation, and we obtain extensions of the limit shape parabola and the corresponding asymptotic fluctuation results. The exact solvability and asymptotic behavior results are powered by a new nontrivial connection to Schur measures and processes.

Distribution of the Number of Corners in Tree--like Tableaux
In this paper, we study tree--like tableaux and some of their probabilistic properties. Tree--like tableaux are in bijection with other combinatorial structures, including permutation tableaux, and have a connection to the partially asymmetric simple exclusion process (PASEP), an important model of an interacting particles system. In particular, in the context of tree-like tableaux, a corner corresponds to a node occupied by a particle that could jump to the right while inner corners indicate a particle with an empty node to its left. Thus, the total number of corners represents the number of nodes at which PASEP can move, i. e. the total current activity of the system. As the number of inner corners and regular corners is connected, we limit our discussion to just regular corners and show that asymptotically, the number of corners in a tableau of length $n$ is normally distributed.

Yang-Baxter field for spin Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Employing bijectivisation of summation identities, we introduce local stochastic moves based on the Yang-Baxter equation for $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}_2})$. Combining these moves leads to a new object which we call the spin Hall-Littlewood Yang-Baxter field - a probability distribution on two-dimensional arrays of particle configurations on the discrete line. We identify joint distributions along down-right paths in the Yang-Baxter field with spin Hall-Littlewood processes, a generalization of Schur processes. We consider various degenerations of the Yang-Baxter field leading to new dynamic versions of the stochastic six vertex model and of the Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process.

An insertion algorithm over staircase tableaux compatible with the ASEP's matrix ansatz
Based on the matrix ansatz of Derrida, Evans, Hakim and Pasquier, we prensent a new way of computing the stationary probability of a state of the asym- metric simple exclusion process (ASEP). Through an insertion algorithm over staircase tableaux, we give a combinatorial proof to the current interpretation of the ASEP by these tableaux of Corteel and Williams. The insertion algorithm induces a recursive structure which implies nice factorised formulas for the generating polynomials of staircase tableaux, as well as a bijection with some coloured inversion tables. In addi- tion, we adapt the insertion algorithm to the case of type B symmetric tableaux and we define a new matrix ansatz compatible with it.

Hall-Littlewood RSK field
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a randomized Hall-Littlewood RSK algorithm and study its combinatorial and probabilistic properties. On the probabilistic side, a new model --- the Hall-Littlewood RSK field --- is introduced. Its various degenerations contain known objects (the stochastic six vertex model, the asymmetric simple exclusion process) as well as a variety of new ones. We provide formulas for a rich class of observables of these models, extending existing results about Macdonald processes. On the combinatorial side, we establish analogs of properties of the classical RSK algorithm: invertibility, symmetry, and a "bijectivization" of the skew-Cauchy identity.
Stochastic six-vertex model in a half-quadrant and half-line open ASEP
Published in Duke Math. J. 167, no. 13 (2018), 2457-2529 • View PublicationBIB
We consider the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on the positive integers with an open boundary condition. We show that, when starting devoid of particles and for a certain boundary condition, the height function at the origin fluctuates asymptotically (in large time $τ$) according to the Tracy-Widom GOE distribution on the $τ^{1/3}$ scale. This is the first example of KPZ asymptotics for a half-space system outside the class of free-fermionic/determinantal/Pfaffian models. Our main tool in this analysis is a new class of probability measures on Young diagrams that we call half-space Macdonald processes, as well as two surprising relations. The first relates a special (Hall-Littlewood) case of these measures to the half-space stochastic six-vertex model (which further limits to ASEP) using a Yang-Baxter graphical argument. The second relates certain averages under these measures to their half-space (or Pfaffian) Schur process analogs via a refined Littlewood identity.
Koornwinder polynomials and the stationary multi-species asymmetric exclusion process with open boundaries

We prove that the normalisation of the stationary state of the multi-species asymmetric simple exclusion process (mASEP) is a specialisation of a Koornwinder polynomial. As a corollary we obtain that the normalisation of mASEP factorises as a product over multiple copies of the two-species ASEP.

Weighted dependency graphs
Published in Electronic Journal of Probability, 23, paper no. 93, 65 pp, 2018 • Search Publication
The theory of dependency graphs is a powerful toolbox to prove asymptotic normality of sums of random variables. In this article, we introduce a more general notion of weighted dependency graphs and give normality criteria in this context. We also provide generic tools to prove that some weighted graph is a weighted dependency graph for a given family of random variables. To illustrate the power of the theory, we give applications to the following objects: uniform random pair partitions, the random graph model $G(n,M)$, uniform random permutations, the symmetric simple exclusion process and multilinear statistics on Markov chains. The application to random permutations gives a bivariate extension of a functional central limit theorem of Janson and Barbour. On Markov chains, we answer positively an open question of Bourdon and Vallée on the asymptotic normality of subword counts in random texts generated by a Markovian source.

Stammering tableaux
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 19 no. 3, Combinatorics (September 15, 2017) dmtcs:1351 • View PublicationBIB
The PASEP (Partially Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process) is a probabilistic model of moving particles, which is of great interest in combinatorics, since it appeared that its partition function counts some tableaux. These tableaux have several variants such as permutations tableaux, alternative tableaux, tree- like tableaux, Dyck tableaux, etc. We introduce in this context certain excursions in Young's lattice, that we call stammering tableaux (by analogy with oscillating tableaux, vacillating tableaux, hesitating tableaux). Some natural bijections make a link with rook placements in a double staircase, chains of Dyck paths obtained by successive addition of ribbons, Laguerre histories, Dyck tableaux, etc.

The Asymptotic Distribution of Symbols on Diagonals of Random Weighted Staircase Tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
Staircase tableaux are combinatorial objects that were first introduced due to a connection with the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) and Askey-Wilson polynomials. Since their introduction, staircase tableaux have been the object of study in many recent papers. Relevant to this paper, the distri- bution of parameters on the first diagonal was proven to be asymptotically normal. In that same paper, a conjecture was made that the other diagonals would be asymptotically Poisson. Since then, only the second and the third diagonal were proven to follow the conjecture. This paper builds upon those results to prove the conjecture for fixed k. In particular, we prove that the distribution of the number of alphas (betas) on the kth diagonal, k > 1, is asymptotically Poisson with parameter 1\2. In addition, we prove that symbols on the kth diagonal are asymptotically independent and thus, collectively follow the Poisson distribution with parameter 1.

Corners in tree-like tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study tree--like tableaux, combinatorial objects which exhibit a natural tree structure and are connected to the partially asymmetric simple exclusion process (PASEP). There was a conjecture made on the total number of corners in tree--like tableaux and the total number of corners in symmetric tree--like tableaux. In this paper, we prove the first conjecture leaving the proof of the second conjecture to the full version of this paper. Our proofs are based on the bijection with permutation tableaux or type--B permutation tableaux and consequently, we also prove results for these tableaux.

Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process with open boundaries and Quadratic Harnesses
Published in Journal of Statistical Physics 167 (2017), 383-415 • View PublicationBIB
We show that the joint probability generating function of the stationary measure of a finite state asymmetric exclusion process with open boundaries can be expressed in terms of joint moments of Markov processes called quadratic harnesses. We use our representation to prove the large deviations principle for the total number of particles in the system. We use the generator of the Markov process to show how explicit formulas for the average occupancy of a site arise for special choices of parameters. We also give similar representations for limits of stationary measures as the number of sites tends to infinity.

Combinatorics of the two-species ASEP and Koornwinder moments
Published in Advances in Mathematics, 321 (2017), 160--204 • View PublicationBIB
In previous work, the first and third authors introduced staircase tableaux, which they used to give combinatorial formulas for the stationary distribution of the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) and for the moments of the Askey-Wilson weight function. The fact that the ASEP and Askey-Wilson moments are related at all is quite surprising, and is due to Uchiyama-Sasamoto-Wadati. The ASEP is a model of particles hopping on a one-dimensional lattice of N sites with open boundaries, particles can enter and exit at both left and right borders. It was introduced around 1970 and is cited as a model for both traffic flow and translation in protein synthesis. Meanwhile, the Askey-Wilson polynomials are a family of orthogonal polynomials in one variable, they sit at the top of the hierarchy of classical orthogonal polynomials. So we have the relationship ASEP -- staircase tableaux -- Askey-Wilson moments It is well-known that Askey-Wilson polynomials can be viewed as the one-variable case of the multivariate Koornwinder polynomials, also known as the Macdonald polynomials for the type BC root system. It is natural then to ask whether one can generalize the relationships among the ASEP, Askey-Wilson moments, and staircase tableaux, in such a way that Koornwinder moments replace Askey-Wilson moments. In a recent work, we demonstrated a close connection between Koornwinder moments and the two-species ASEP (a particle model involving two species of particles with different "weights"). In this article we introduce rhombic staircase tableaux, and show that we have the relationship 2-species ASEP -- rhombic staircase tableaux -- Koornwinder moments In particular, we give formulas for the steady state distribution of the two-species ASEP and for Koornwinder moments, in terms of rhombic staircase tableaux.

LGV proof of a determinantal theorem for TASEP probabilities
The Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (TASEP) is a non-equilibrium particle model on a finite one-dimensional lattice with open boundaries. In our earlier paper, we obtained a determinantal formula that computes the steady state probabilities of this process by the enumeration of "Catalan alternative tableaux", which are certain fillings of Young diagrams. Here, we present a new, more illuminating bijective proof of this determinantal formula using the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot Lemma.

A Determinantal Formula for Catalan Tableaux and TASEP Probabilities
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A (2015), pp. 120-141 • View PublicationBIB
We present a determinantal formula for the steady state probability of each state of the TASEP (Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process) with open boundaries, a 1D particle model that has been studied extensively and displays rich combinatorial structure. These steady state probabilities are computed by the enumeration of Catalan tableaux, which are certain Young diagrams filled with $α$'s and $β$'s that satisfy some conditions on the rows and columns. We construct a bijection from the Catalan tableaux to weighted lattice paths on a Young diagram, and from this we enumerate the paths with a determinantal formula, building upon a formula of Narayana that counts unweighted lattice paths on a Young diagram. Finally, we provide a formula for the enumeration of Catalan tableaux that satisfy a given condition on the rows, which corresponds to the steady state probability that in the TASEP on a lattice with $n$ sites, precisely $k$ of the sites are occupied by particles. This formula is an $α /\ β$ generalization of the Narayana numbers.

Jeu de taquin dynamics on infinite Young tableaux and second class particles
Published in Annals of Probability 2015, Vol. 43, 682-737 • View PublicationBIB
We study an infinite version of the "jeu de taquin" sliding game, which can be thought of as a natural measure-preserving transformation on the set of infinite Young tableaux equipped with the Plancherel probability measure. We use methods from representation theory to show that the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth ($\operatorname {RSK}$) algorithm gives an isomorphism between this measure-preserving dynamical system and the one-sided shift dynamics on a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables distributed uniformly on the unit interval. We also show that the jeu de taquin paths induced by the transformation are asymptotically straight lines emanating from the origin in a random direction whose distribution is computed explicitly, and show that this result can be interpreted as a statement on the limiting speed of a second-class particle in the Plancherel-TASEP particle system (a variant of the Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process associated with Plancherel growth), in analogy with earlier results for second class particles in the ordinary TASEP.

Limit process of stationary TASEP near the characteristic line
Published in Comm. Pure Appl. Math 63 (2010), 1017-1070 • View PublicationBIB
The totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) on Z with the Bernoulli-rho measure as initial conditions, 0<rho<1, is stationary. It is known that along the characteristic line, the current fluctuates as of order t^{1/3}. The limiting distribution has also been obtained explicitly. In this paper we determine the limiting multi-point distribution of the current fluctuations moving away from the characteristics by the order t^{2/3}. The main tool is the analysis of a related directed last percolation model. We also discuss the process limit in tandem queues in equilibrium.
