We prove that for every complex classical group $G$ the string polytope associated to a special reduced decomposition and any dominant integral weight $λ$ will be a lattice polytope if and only if the highest weight representation of the Lie algebra of $G$ with highest weight $λ$ integrates to a representation of $G$ itself. This affirms an earlier conjecture and shows that every partial flag variety of a complex classical group admits a flat projective degeneration to a Gorenstein Fano toric variety.
Castelnuovo polytopes

It is known that the sectional genus of a polarized variety has an upper bound, which is an extension of the Castelnuovo bound on the genus of a projective curve. Polarized varieties whose sectional genus achieves this bound are called Castelnuovo. On the other hand, a lattice polytope is called Castelnuovo if the associated polarized toric variety is Castelnuovo. Kawaguchi characterized Castelnuovo polytopes having interior lattice points in terms of their $h^*$-vectors. In this paper, as a generalization of this result, a characterization of all Castelnuovo polytopes will be presented. Finally, as an application of our characterization, we give a sufficient criterion for a lattice polytope to be IDP.
Combinatorial Mutations and Block Diagonal Polytopes

Matching fields were introduced by Sturmfels and Zelevinsky to study certain Newton polytopes and more recently have been shown to give rise to toric degenerations of various families of varieties. Whenever a matching field gives rise to a toric degeneration, the associated polytope of the toric variety coincides with the matching field polytope. We study combinatorial mutations, which are analogues of cluster mutations for polytopes, of matching field polytopes and show that the property of giving rise to a toric degeneration of the Grassmannians, is preserved by mutation. Moreover the polytopes arising through mutations are Newton-Okounkov bodies for the Grassmannians with respect to certain full-rank valuations. We produce a large family of such polytopes, extending the family of so-called block diagonal matching fields.
Varieties of Tropical Ideals are Balanced

Tropical ideals, introduced in arXiv:1609.03838, define subschemes of tropical toric varieties. We prove that the top-dimensional parts of their varieties are balanced polyhedral complexes of the same dimension as the ideal. This means that every subscheme of a tropical toric variety defined by a tropical ideal has an associated class in the Chow ring of the toric variety. A key tool in the proof is that specialization of variables in a tropical ideal yields another tropical ideal; this plays the role of hyperplane sections in the theory. We also show that elimination theory (projection of varieties) works for tropical ideals as in the classical case. The matroid condition that defines tropical ideals is crucial for these results.
Semitoric degenerations of Hibi varieties and flag varieties
We construct a family of flat semitoric degenerations for the Hibi variety of every finite distributive lattice. The irreducible components of each degeneration are the toric varieties associated with polytopes forming a regular subdivision of the order polytope of the underlying poset. These components are themselves Hibi varieties. For each degeneration in our family we also define the corresponding weight polytope and embed the degeneration into the associated toric variety as the union of orbit closures given by a set of faces. Every such weight polytope projects onto the order polytope with the chosen faces projecting into the parts of the corresponding regular subdivision. We apply these constructions to obtain a family of flat semitoric degenerations for every type A Grassmannian and complete flag variety.

We associate to a projective $n$-dimensional toric variety $X_Δ$ a pair of co-commutative (but generally non-commutative) Hopf algebras $H^α_X, H^{T}_X$. These arise as Hall algebras of certain categories $\Coh^α(X), \Coh^T(X)$ of coherent sheaves on $X_Δ$ viewed as a monoid scheme - i.e. a scheme obtained by gluing together spectra of commutative monoids rather than rings. When $X_Δ$ is smooth, the category $\Coh^T(X)$ has an explicit combinatorial description as sheaves whose restriction to each $\mathbb{A}^n$ corresponding to a maximal cone $σ\in Δ$ is determined by an $n$-dimensional generalized skew shape. The (non-additive) categories $\Coh^α(X), \Coh^T(X)$ are treated via the formalism of proto-exact/proto-abelian categories developed by Dyckerhoff-Kapranov.
The Hall algebras $H^α_X, H^{T}_X$ are graded and connected, and so enveloping algebras $H^α_X \simeq U(\n^α_X)$, $H^{T}_X \simeq U(\n^{T}_X)$, where the Lie algebras $\n^α_X, \n^{T}_X$ are spanned by the indecomposable coherent sheaves in their respective categories.
We explicitly work out several examples, and in some cases are able to relate $\n^T_X$ to known Lie algebras. In particular, when $X = \mathbb{P}^1$, $\n^T_X$ is isomorphic to a non-standard Borel in $\mathfrak{gl}_2 [t,t^{-1}]$. When $X$ is the second infinitesimal neighborhood of the origin inside $\mathbb{A}^2$, $\n^T_X$ is isomorphic to a subalgebra of $\mathfrak{gl}_2[t]$. We also consider the case $X=\mathbb{P}^2$, where we give a basis for $\n^T_X$ by describing all indecomposable sheaves in $\Coh^T(X)$.
Toric Newton-Okounkov functions with an application to the rationality of certain Seshadri constants on surfaces
We initiate a combinatorial study of Newton-Okounkov functions on toric varieties with an eye on the rationality of asymptotic invariants of line bundles. In the course of our efforts we identify a combinatorial condition which ensures a controlled behavior of the appropriate Newton-Okounkov function on a toric surface. Our approach yields the rationality of many Seshadri constants that have not been settled before.
The bipermutahedron

The harmonic polytope and the bipermutahedron are two related polytopes which arose in Ardila, Denham, and Huh's work on the Lagrangian geometry of matroids. We study the bipermutahedron. We show that its faces are in bijection with the vertex-labeled and edge-labeled multigraphs with no isolated vertices; the generating function for its f-vector is a simple evaluation of the three variable Rogers--Ramanujan function.
We show that the h-polynomial of the bipermutahedral fan is the biEulerian polynomial, which counts bipermutations according to their number of descents. We construct a unimodular triangulation of the product of n triangles that is combinatorially equivalent to (the triple cone over) the nth bipermutahedral fan. Ehrhart theory then gives us a formula for the biEulerian polynomial, which we use to show that this polynomial is real-rooted and that the h-vector of the bipermutahedral fan is log-concave and unimodal.
We describe all the deformations of the bipermutahedron; that is, the ample cone of the bipermutahedral toric variety. We prove that among all polytopes in this family, the bipermutahedron has the largest possible symmetry group. Finally, we show that the Minkowski quotient of the bipermutahedron and the harmonic polytope equals 2.

The celebrated BKK Theorem expresses the number of roots of a system of generic Laurent polynomials in terms of the mixed volume of the corresponding system of Newton polytopes.Pukhlikov and the second author noticed that the cohomology ring of smooth projective toric varieties over $\mathbb{C}$ can be computed via the BKK Theorem. This complemented the known descriptions of the cohomology ring of toric varieties, like the one in terms of Stanley-Reisner algebras.
Sankaran and Uma generalized the "Stanley-Reisner description" to the case of toric bundles, i.e. equivariant compactifications of (not necessarily algebraic) torus principal bundles. We provide a description of the cohomology ring of toric bundles which is based on a generalization of the \BKK Theorem, and thus extends the approach by Pukhlikov and the second author. Indeed, for every cohomology class of the base of the toric bundle, we obtain a BKK-type theorem. Furthermore, our proof relies on a description of graded-commutative algebras which satisfy Poincaré duality.
From this computation of the cohomology ring of toric bundles, we obtain a description of the ring of conditions of horospherical homogeneous spaces as well as a version of Brion-Kazarnovskii theorem for them. We conclude the manuscript with a number of examples. In particular, we apply our results to toric bundles over a full flag variety $G/B$. The description that we get generalizes the corresponding description of the cohomology ring of toric varieties as well as the one of full flag varieties $G/B$ previously obtained by Kaveh.

We consider a $d$-dimensional well-formed weighted projective space $\mathbb{P}(\overline{w})$ as a toric variety associated with a fan $Σ(\overline{w})$ in $N_{\overline{w}} \otimes \mathbb{N}$ whose $1$-dimensional cones are spanned by primitive vectors $v_0, v_1, \ldots, v_d \in N_{\overline{w}}$ generating a lattice $N_{\overline{w}}$ and satisfying the linear relation $\sum_i w_i v_i =0$. For any fixed dimension $d$, there exist only finitely many weight vectors $\overline{w} = (w_0, \ldots, w_d)$ such that $\mathbb{P}(\overline{w})$ contains a quasi-smooth Calabi-Yau hypersurface $X_w$ defined by a transverse weighted homogeneous polynomial $W$ of degree $w = \sum_{i=0}^d w_i$. Using a formula of Vafa for the orbifold Euler number $χ_{\rm orb}(X_w)$, we show that for any quasi-smooth Calabi-Yau hypersurface $X_w$ the number $(-1)^{d-1}χ_{\rm orb}(X_w)$ equals the stringy Euler number $χ_{\rm str}(X_{\overline{w}}^*)$ of Calabi-Yau compactifications $X_{\overline{w}}^*$ of affine toric hypersurfaces $Z_{\overline{w}}$ defined by non-degenerate Laurent polynomials $f_{\overline{w}} \in \mathbb{C}[N_{\overline{w}}]$ with Newton polytope $\text{conv}(\{v_0, \ldots, v_d\})$. In the moduli space of Laurent polynomials $f_{\overline{w}}$ there always exists a special point $f_{\overline{w}}^0$ defining a mirror $X_{\overline{w}}^*$ with a $\mathbb{Z}/w\mathbb{Z}$-symmetry group such that $X_{\overline{w}}^*$ is birational to a quotient of a Fermat hypersurface via a Shioda map.
On algebraic properties of matroid polytopes
A toric variety is constructed from a lattice polytope. It is common in algebraic combinatorics to carry this way a notion of an algebraic property from the variety to the polytope. From the combinatorial point of view, one of the most interesting constructions of toric varieties comes from the base polytope of a matroid. Matroid base polytopes and independence polytopes are Cohen--Macaulay. We study two natural stronger algebraic properties -- Gorenstein and smooth. We provide a full classifications of matroids whose independence polytope or base polytope is smooth or Gorenstein. The latter answers to a question raised by Herzog and Hibi.

Regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties are smooth subvarieties of the flag variety, and their examples contain the flag variety itself and the permutohedral variety which is a toric variety. We give a complete classification of Fano and weak Fano regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties in type A in terms of combinatorics of Hessenberg functions. In particular, we show that if the anti-canonical bundle of a regular semisimple Hessenberg variety is nef, then it is in fact nef and big.

The theory of Newton-Okounkov bodies is a generalization of that of Newton polytopes for toric varieties, and it gives a systematic method of constructing toric degenerations of projective varieties. In this paper, we study Newton-Okounkov bodies of Schubert varieties from the theory of cluster algebras. We construct Newton-Okounkov bodies using specific valuations which generalize extended g-vectors in cluster theory, and discuss how these bodies are related to string polytopes and Nakashima-Zelevinsky polytopes.
Toric spaces and face enumeration on simplicial manifolds
In this paper, we study the well-know $g$-conjecture for rational homology spheres in a topological way. To do this, we construct a class of topological spaces with torus actions, which can be viewed as topological generalizations of toric varieties. Along this way we prove that after doing stellar subdivision operations at some middle dimensional faces of an arbitrary rational homology sphere, the $g$-conjecture is valid. Furthermore, we give topological proofs of several fundamental algebraic results about Buchsbaum complexes and simplicial manifolds. In this process, we also get a few interesting results in toric topology.

Small toric resolutions of toric varieties of string polytopes with small indices

Let $G$ be a semisimple algebraic group over $\mathbb{C}$. For a reduced word $\bf i$ of the longest element in the Weyl group of $G$ and a dominant integral weight $λ$, one can construct the string polytope $Δ_{\bf i}(λ)$, whose lattice points encode the character of the irreducible representation $V_λ$. The string polytope $Δ_{\bf i}(λ)$ is singular in general and combinatorics of string polytopes heavily depends on the choice of $\mathbf i$. In this paper, we study combinatorics of string polytopes when $G = SL_{n+1}(\mathbb{C})$, and present a sufficient condition on $\mathbf i$ such that the toric variety $X_{Δ_{\mathbf i}(λ)}$ of the string polytope $Δ_{\mathbf i}(λ)$ has a small toric resolution. Indeed, when $\mathbf i$ has small indices and $λ$ is regular, we explicitly construct a small toric resolution of the toric variety $X_{Δ_{\bf i}(λ)}$ using a Bott manifold. Our main theorem implies that a toric variety of any string polytope admits a small toric resolution when $n < 4$. As a byproduct, we show that if $\mathbf i$ has small indices then $Δ_{\mathbf i}(λ)$ is integral for any dominant integral weight $λ$, which in particular implies that the anticanonical limit toric variety $X_{Δ_{\bf i}(λ_P)}$ of a partial flag variety $G/P$ is Gorenstein Fano. Furthermore, we apply our result to symplectic topology of the full flag manifold $G/B$ and obtain a formula of the disk potential of the Lagrangian torus fibration on $G/B$ obtained from a flat toric degeneration of $G/B$ to the toric variety $X_{Δ_{\bf i}(λ)}$.
Generation of jets and Fujita's jet ampleness conjecture on toric varieties
Jet ampleness of line bundles generalizes very ampleness by requiring the existence of enough global sections to separate not just points and tangent vectors, but also their higher order analogues called jets. We give sharp bounds guaranteeing that a line bundle on a projective toric variety is $k$-jet ample in terms of its intersection numbers with the invariant curves, in terms of the lattice lengths of the edges of its polytope, in terms of the higher concavity of its piecewise linear function and in terms of its Seshadri constant. For example, the tensor power $k+n-2$ of an ample line bundle on a projective toric variety of dimension $n \geq 2$ always generates all $k$-jets, but might not generate all $(k+1)$-jets. As an application, we prove the $k$-jet generalizations of Fujita's conjectures on toric varieties with arbitrary singularities.
Normal completions of toric varieties over rank one valuation rings and completions of $Γ$-admissible fans

We show that any normal toric variety over a rank one valuation ring admits an equivariant open embedding in a normal toric variety which is proper over the valuation ring, after a base-change by a finite extension of valuation rings. If the value group $Γ$ is discrete or divisible then no base-change is needed. We give explicit examples which show that existing methods do not produce such normal equivariant completions. Our approach is combinatorial and proceeds by showing that $Γ$-admissible fans admit $Γ$-admissible completions. In order to show this we prove a combinatorial analog of noetherian reduction which we believe will be of independent interest.
Positively Hyperbolic Varieties, Tropicalization, and Positroids
A variety of codimension $c$ in complex affine space is called positively hyperbolic if the imaginary part of any point in it does not lie in any positive linear subspace of dimension $c$. Positively hyperbolic hypersurfaces are defined by stable polynomials. We give a new characterization of positively hyperbolic varieties using sign variations, and show that they are equivalently defined by being hyperbolic with respect to the positive part of the Grassmannian, in the sense of Shamovich and Vinnikov. We prove that positively hyperbolic projective varieties have tropicalizations that are locally subfans of the type $A$ hyperplane arrangement defined by $x_i = x_j$, in which the maximal cones satisfy a non-crossing condition. This gives new proofs of some results of Choe--Oxley--Sokal--Wagner and Brändén on Newton polytopes and tropicalizations of stable polynomials. We settle the question of which tropical varieties can be obtained as tropicalizations of positively hyperbolic varieties in the case of tropical toric varieties, constant-coefficient tropical curves, and Bergman fans. Along the way, we also give a new characterization of positroids in terms of a non-crossing condition on their Bergman fans.
