An extension of Stanley's chromatic symmetric function to binary delta-matroids
Stanley's symmetrized chromatic polynomial is a generalization of the ordinary chromatic polynomial to a graph invariant with values in a ring of polynomials in infnitely many variables. The ordinary chromatic polynomial is a specialization of the Stanley's one. Our goal is to extend Stanley's chromatic polynomial to embedded graphs. In contrast to well-known extensions of, say, the Tutte polynomial from abstract to embedded graphs [5], we do not treat an embedded graph as an abstract graph endowed with additional information about the embedding. Instead, we consider the binary delta-matroid associated to an embedded graph and define the extended Stanley's chromatic polynomial as an invariant of delta-matroids. We show that, similarly to Stanley's symmetrized chromatic polynomial of graphs, which satisfies 4-term relations for simple graphs and determines in this way a knot invariant, extended Stanley's chromatic polynomial of binary delta-matroids we define satisfies the 4-term relations for binary delta-matroids [10] and determines, therefore, an invariant of links.

The Active Bijection 2.a - Decomposition of activities for matroid bases, and Tutte polynomial of a matroid in terms of beta invariants of minors
We introduce and study filtrations of a matroid on a linearly ordered ground set, which are particular sequences of nested sets. A given basis can be decomposed into a uniquely defined sequence of bases of minors, such that these bases have an internal/external activity equal to 1/0 or 0/1 (in the sense of Tutte polynomial activities). This decomposition, which we call the active filtration/partition of the basis, refines the known partition of the ground set into internal and external elements with respect to a given basis. It can be built by a certain closure operator, which we call the active closure. It relies only on the fundamental bipartite graph of the basis and can be expressed also as a decomposition of general bipartite graphs on a linearly ordered set of vertices.
From this, first, structurally, we obtain that the set of all bases can be canonically partitioned and decomposed in terms of such bases of minors induced by filtrations. Second, enumeratively, we derive an expression of the Tutte polynomial of a matroid in terms of beta invariants of minors. This expression refines at the same time the classical expressions in terms of basis activities and orientation activities (if the matroid is oriented), and the well-known convolution formula for the Tutte polynomial. Third, in a companion paper of the same series (No. 2.b), we use this decomposition of matroid bases, along with a similar decomposition of oriented matroids, and along with a bijection in the 1/0 activity case from a previous paper (No. 1), to define the canonical active bijection between orientations/signatures/reorientations and spanning trees/simplices/bases of a graph/real hyperplane arrangement/oriented matroid, as well as various related bijections.

The active bijection forms a package of results studied by the authors in a series of papers in oriented matroids. The present paper is intended to state the main results in the particular case, and more widespread language, of graphs. We associate any directed graph, defined on a linearly ordered set of edges, with one particular of its spanning trees, which we call its active spanning tree. For any graph on a linearly ordered set of edges, this yields a surjective mapping from orientations onto spanning trees, which preserves activities (for orientations in the sense of Las Vergnas, for spanning trees in the sense of Tutte), as well as some partitions (or filtrations) of the edge set associated with orientations and spanning trees. It yields a canonical bijection between classes of orientations and spanning trees, as well as a refined bijection between all orientations and edge subsets, containing various noticeable bijections [...]. Several constructions of independent interest are involved. The basic case concerns bipolar orientations, which are in bijection with their fully optimal spanning trees, as proved in a previous paper, and as computed in a companion paper. We give a canonical decomposition of a directed graph on a linearly ordered set of edges into acyclic/cyclic bipolar directed graphs. Considering all orientations of a graph, we obtain an expression of the Tutte polynomial in terms of products of beta invariants of minors, a remarkable partition of the set of orientations into activity classes, and a simple expression of the Tutte polynomial using four orientation activity parameters. We derive a similar decomposition theorem for spanning trees. We also provide a general deletion/contraction framework for these bijections and relatives.
Computing the fully optimal spanning tree of an ordered bipolar directed graph

It has been previously shown by the authors that a directed graph on a linearly ordered set of edges (ordered graph) with adjacent unique source and sink (bipolar digraph) has a unique fully optimal spanning tree, that satisfies a simple criterion on fundamental cycle/cocycle directions. This result yields, for any ordered graph, a canonical bijection between bipolar orientations and spanning trees with internal activity 1 and external activity 0 in the sense of the Tutte polynomial. This bijection can be extended to all orientations and all spanning trees, yielding the active bijection, presented for graphs in a companion paper. In this paper, we specifically address the problem of the computation of the fully optimal spanning tree of an ordered bipolar digraph. In contrast with the inverse mapping, built by a straightforward single pass over the edge set, the direct computation is not easy and had previously been left aside. We give two independent constructions. The first one is a deletion/contraction recursion, involving an exponential number of minors. It is structurally significant but it is efficient only for building the whole bijection (i.e. all images) at once. The second one is more complicated and is the main contribution of the paper. It involves just one minor for each edge of the resulting spanning tree, and it is a translation and an adaptation in the case of graphs, in terms of weighted cocycles, of a general geometrical linear programming type algorithm, which allows for a polynomial time complexity.

We introduce the active partition of the ground set of an oriented matroid perspective (or quotient, or strong map) on a linearly ordered ground set. The reorientations obtained by arbitrarily reorienting parts of the active partition share the same active partition. This yields an equivalence relation for the set of reorientations of an oriented matroid perspective, whose classes are enumerated by coefficients of the Tutte polynomial, and a remarkable partition of the set of reorientations into boolean lattices, from which we get a short direct proof of a 4-variable expansion formula for the Tutte polynomial in terms of orientation activities. This formula was given in the last unpublished preprint by Michel Las Vergnas; the above equivalence relation and notion of active partition generalize a former construction in oriented matroids by Michel Las Vergnas and the author; and the possibility of such a proof technique in perspectives was announced in the aforementioned preprint. We also briefly highlight how the 5-variable expansion of the Tutte polynomial in terms of subset activities in matroid perspectives comes in a similar way from the known partition of the power set of the ground set into boolean lattices related to subset activities (and we complete the proof with a property which was missing in the literature). In particular, the paper applies to matroids and oriented matroids on a linearly ordered ground set.
The Active Bijection 2.b - Decomposition of activities for oriented matroids, and general definitions of the active bijection
The active bijection for oriented matroids (and real hyperplane arrangements, and graphs, as particular cases) is introduced and investigated by the authors in a series of papers. Given any oriented matroid defined on a linearly ordered ground set, we exhibit one particularité of its bases, which we call its active basis, with remarkable properties. It preserves activities (for oriented matroids in the sense of Las Vergnas, for matroid bases in the sense of Tutte), as well as some active partitions of the ground set associated with oriented matroids and matroid bases. It yields a canonical bijection between classes of reorientations and bases [...]. It also yields a refined bijection between all reorientations and subsets of the ground set. Those bijections are related to various Tutte polynomial expressions [...]. They contain various noticeable bijections involving orientations/signatures/reorientations and spanning trees/simplices/bases of a graph/real hyperplane arrangement/oriented matroid. [...]
In previous papers of this series, we defined the active bijection between bounded regions and uniactive internal bases by means of fully optimal bases (No. 1), and we defined a decomposition of activities for matroid bases by means of [...] particular sequences of minors (companion paper, No. 2.a). The present paper is central in the series. First, we define a decomposition of activities for oriented matroids, using the same sequences of minors, yielding a decomposition of an oriented matroid into bounded regions of minors. Second, we use the previous results together to provide the canonical and refined active bijections alluded to above. We also give an overview and examples of the various results of independent interest involved in the construction. They arise as soon as the ground set of an oriented matroid is linearly ordered.

Using the combinatorics of $α$-unimodal sets, we establish two new results in the theory of quasisymmetric functions. First, we obtain the expansion of the fundamental basis into quasisymmetric power sums. Secondly, we prove that generating functions of reverse $P$-partitions expand positively into quasisymmetric power sums. Consequently any nonnegative linear combination of such functions is $p$-positive whenever it is symmetric. As an application we derive positivity results for chromatic quasisymmetric functions, unicellular and vertical strip LLT polynomials, multivariate Tutte polynomials and the more general $B$-polynomials, matroid quasisymmetric functions, and certain Eulerian quasisymmetric functions, thus reproving and improving on numerous results in the literature.

We extend the notion of face rings of simplicial complexes and simplicial posets to the case of finite-length (possibly infinite) simplicial posets with a group action. The action on the complex induces an action on the face ring, and we prove that the ring of invariants is isomorphic to the face ring of the quotient simplicial poset under a mild condition on the group action. We also identify a class of actions on simplicial complexes that preserve the homotopical Cohen-Macaulay property under quotients. When the acted-upon poset is the independence complex of a semimatroid, the $h$-polynomial of the ring of invariants can be read off the Tutte polynomial of the associated group action. Moreover, in this case an additional condition on the action ensures that the quotient poset is Cohen-Macaulay in characteristic 0 and every characteristic that does not divide an explicitly computable number. This implies the same property for the associated Stanley-Reisner rings. In particular, this holds for independence posets and rings associated to toric, elliptic and, more generally, $(p,q)$-arrangements. As a byproduct, we prove that posets of connected components (also known as posets of {layers}) of such arrangements are Cohen-Macaulay with the same condition on the characteristic.

We construct a new polynomial invariant of maps (graphs embedded in a compact surface, orientable or non-orientable), which contains as specializations the Krushkal polynomial, the Bollobás--Riordan polynomial, the Las Vergnas polynomial, and their extensions to non-orientable surfaces, and hence in particular the Tutte polynomial. Other evaluations include the number of local flows and local tensions taking non-identity values in a given finite group.
Tutte Invariants for Alternating Dimaps
An alternating dimap is an orientably embedded Eulerian directed graph where the edges incident with each vertex are directed inwards and outwards alternately. Three reduction operations for alternating dimaps were investigated by Farr. A minor of an alternating dimap can be obtained by reducing some of its edges using the reduction operations. Unlike classical minor operations, these reduction operations do not commute in general. A Tutte invariant for alternating dimaps is a function $ P $ defined on every alternating dimap and taking values in a field such that $ P $ is invariant under isomorphism and obeys a linear recurrence relation involving reduction operations. It is well known that if a graph $ G $ is planar, then the Tutte polynomial $ T $ satisfies $ T(G;x,y)=T(G^{*};y,x) $. We note an analogous relation for the extended Tutte invariants for alternating dimaps introduced by Farr. We then characterise the Tutte invariant for alternating dimaps of genus zero under several conditions. As a result of the non-commutativity of the reduction operations, the recursions based on them cannot always be satisfied. We investigate the properties of alternating dimaps of genus zero that are required in order to obtain a well defined Tutte invariant. Some excluded minor characterisations for these alternating dimaps are also given.

We recover the Tutte polynomial of a matroid, up to change of coordinates, from an Ehrhart-style polynomial counting lattice points in the Minkowski sum of its base polytope and scalings of simplices. Our polynomial has coefficients of alternating sign with a combinatorial interpretation closely tied to the Dawson partition. Our definition extends in a straightforward way to polymatroids, and in this setting our polynomial has Kálmán's internal and external activity polynomials as its univariate specialisations.
Graph polynomials and symmetries

In a recent paper, we studied the interaction between the automorphism group of a graph and its Tutte polynomial. More precisely, we proved that certain symmetries of graphs are clearly reflected by their Tutte polynomials. The purpose of this paper is to extend this study to other graph polynomials. In particular, we prove that if a graph $G$ has a symmetry of prime order $p$, then its characteristic polynomial, with coefficients in the finite filed $\mathbb{F}_p$, is determined by the characteristic polynomial of its quotient graph $\overline G$. Similar results are also proved for some generalization of the Tutte polynomial.

In 1980, Las Vergnas defined a notion of discrete convexity for oriented matroids, which Edelman subsequently related to the theory of anti-exchange closure functions and convex geometries. In this paper, we use generalized matroid activity to construct a convex geometry associated with an ordered, unoriented matroid. The construction in particular yields a new type of representability for an ordered matroid defined by the affine representability of its corresponding convex geometry.
The lattice of convex sets of this convex geometry induces an ordering on the matroid independent sets which extends the external active order on matroid bases. We show that this generalized external order forms a supersolvable meet-distributive lattice refining the geometric lattice of flats, and we uniquely characterize the lattices isomorphic to the external order of a matroid. Finally, we introduce a new trivariate generating function generalizing the matroid Tutte polynomial.

The Tutte polynomial is the most general invariant of matroids and graphs that can be computed recursively by deleting and contracting edges. We generalize this invariant to any class of combinatorial objects with deletion and contraction operations, associating to each such class a universal Tutte character by a functorial procedure. We show that these invariants satisfy a universal property and convolution formulae similar to the Tutte polynomial. With this machinery we recover classical invariants for delta-matroids, matroid perspectives, relative and colored matroids, generalized permutohedra, and arithmetic matroids, and produce some new convolution formulae. Our principal tools are combinatorial coalgebras and their convolution algebras. Our results generalize in an intrinsic way the recent results of Krajewski--Moffatt--Tanasa.

This is a chapter destined for the book "Handbook of the Tutte Polynomial". The chapter is a composite. The first part is a brief introduction to Orlik-Solomon algebras. The second part sketches the theory of evaluative functions on matroid base polytopes and in particular, the G-invariant (as the subject is known late 2015). A third very short section is on Hopf-algebra or coalgebra structures in Tutte polynomial theory.

We generalize theories of graph, matroid, and ribbon-graph activities to delta-matroids. As a result, we obtain an activities based feasible-set expansion for a transition polynomial of delta-matroids defined by Brijder and Hoogeboom. This result yields feasible-set expansions for the two-variable Bollobás-Riordan and interlace polynomials of a delta-matroid. In the former case, the expansion obtained directly generalizes the activities expansions of the Tutte polynomial of graphs and matroids.

The Tutte polynomial is a fundamental invariant associated to a graph, matroid, vector arrangement, or hyperplane arrangement. This short survey focuses on some of the most important results on Tutte polynomials of hyperplane arrangements. We show that many enumerative, algebraic, geometric, and topological invariants of a hyperplane arrangement can be expressed in terms of its Tutte polynomial. We also show that, even if one is only interested in computing the Tutte polynomial of a graph or a matroid, the theory of hyperplane arrangements provides a powerful finite field method for this computation.

The Tutte polynomial is originally a bivariate polynomial which enumerates the colorings of a graph and of its dual graph. Ardila extended in 2007 the definition of the Tutte polynomial on the real hyperplane arrangements. He particularly computed the Tutte polynomials of the hyperplane arrangements associated to the classical Weyl groups. Those associated to the exceptional Weyl groups were computed by De Concini and Procesi one year later. This article has two objectives: On one side, we extend the Tutte polynomial computing to the complex hyperplane arrangements. On the other side, we introduce a wider class of hyperplane arrangements which is that of the symmetric hyperplane arrangements. Computing the Tutte polynomial of a symmetric hyperplane arrangement permits us to deduce the Tutte polynomials of some hyperplane arrangements, particularly of those associated to the imprimitive reflection groups.
